Prayer

As a follow-up to my Barney Williamson "Does God Intervene?" post a few days ago, I thought of this tonight. As you probably know, three hikers had been missing on Mount Hood in Oregon with two of them being from Dallas. Yesterday, one was found dead (sheesh, can you imagine freezing to death?) but the other two have not been found. It does not look good. But tonight, on Fox 4 News, I learned that the local church of one of the men held a prayer vigil this afternoon, with the pastor leading the congregation with: "We pray that [they] will be found. But we remember that God alone can save." Questions. Questions. Questions. Has God chosen not to intervene? Can prayer change that? Can God be persuaded to change his decision not to intervene? Does it matter as to the number of people that showed up at the vigil to pray? No one talks about these questions. And although everyone must have thought of them at one time or another, we feel guilty for having those thoughts enter our minds. Don't we?

Quit asking difficult questions, it makes some of us think.

These questions are realy difficult and I am not sure that there are any definite answer as to why God has not saved the men. The best I can offer is that God has a purpose and a plan for each of us and perhaps their time here on Earth is up. Time on Earth is short but eternity is forever. I definitely believe that prayer can change everything. I think that the power of prayer is strong and God can be persuaded because he answers the requests of His children when He sees fit. The way I see it is that a perfect world would have no need for God. We experience hard times and difficulties to keep us near to God. God can bring good from all situations no matter how bad they may be. Perhaps, God saving the hikers is simply not in the plan that he has for their lives. I don't think that the number of people that show up at the vigil is really important because God tells us in the Bible that "where two or more are gathered, I am there also."

"God has a purpose and a plan...free will...Satan...you'll get all manner of dodges to questions for which the only answer can be that there is no God. Would love to get some truth serum into each adult sitting in a typical Sunday morning service...

us trying to understand God is like an ant trying to understand the internet.

12:14 - I like your answer best. Thanks.

And for those of us who believe, whether in life or in death, we belong to God.

Shut up, Mzchief.

Hello America--- thousands are dying in africa from lack of food and disease...

THIS JUST IN- THREE AMERICANS ARE MISSING. EVERYONE GO CRAZY!!!!

God hears ALL prayers and sometimes the answer is "NO" and USUALLY for a REASON.

PERHAPS the publicity surrounding the rescue/recovery of the climbers will serve as NOTICE to any FUTURE wannabe explorers that should THEY engage in a life endangering activity that inspite of the BEST of plans and EXTRAORDINARY effort THEY can/will die and PERHAPS they should pick a NEW hobby.

I do have a question. WHY is the United States and local taxpayers EXPECTED to PAY for the search and rescue/recovery of ANYONE who WITTINGLY puts themselves in HARMS way?

The OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of the World's starvation is caused by internal political strife and civil wars within politically UNstable nations thus making it IMPOSSIBLE for food/meds/relief to get to the STARVING people of THOSE nations.

You're Welcome!

Religion has comforted billions of people. Faith that our existence is not meaningless gives people hope and provides a moral structure to individuals and societies.

And sometimes prayers are answered.

i think 12:14 has the best answer.

Barry,

Would you like Hickory smoke or honey glaze BBQ sauce cuz your gonna burn in hell sucker.

Perhaps we are asking the wrong questions here...The conversations with God should not always be "Give me this...help me with this...I need this...help ME, give ME, bless ME.." Perhaps our prayers should be "send me....use me...guide me...let me bless YOU Lord." Just a thought.

Shut up, SquareHead Mzcreep! If prayers are answered SquareHead will go read some cookies and look at flower pictures.

They took a risk, a big risk to climb this time of year! We all make choices, some good some bad.

There are a lot of questions asked about Whydid God allow this to happen? Why want He save them etc...

The Bible gives the answers read it!
God is all loving! If you are a christian, The Holy Spirit talks to you all the time, but most of the time we are to busy to listen.Only they know, if God was giving them warning signs not to go but they went anyway!

God does nothing but through prayer, and through prayer He does everything!

I can remember a story in the Bible the children of Is, wanted a King and God said Im your King! they said no we want a King so they got one,He was an evil king and they said God why did you give us the evil King? Think about!

I know the Bible says that it is God's will that we live a long life!
But our actions, well......

Some folks have even had their first names posted.

That's interesting too.

mzchief...I have read your posts now for a while and have seen the abuse you have taken from others on this blog; at first I thought the whole "shut up mzchief" was just childish, but the more I read your uncompassionate ramblings, in which you usually contradict yourself anyway, the more I tend to agree with your bashers!!! So here is a big fat SHUT THE HELL UP just for you!!!

I can't believe you feel that way about the hikers, I just simply can't believe it. These were for real guys that were living their life and having fun, and it sucks what has happened to them! We should rescue these guys. I think you are just upset because nobody has ever came to rescue your fat ass from behind the computer screen that you hide behind spreading all your hideous translucent psychobabble!!!!!

yes we all wonder and question. but God set all the laws of nature and physics in place and how can he reverse them?
God is either 100% or he doesn't exist. there is no 99.99% God.
these men did a very risky thing and it didn't work out for them. so they suffer the consequences.
we make decisions and we must live with the outcomes.
most of the time , our decisions affect other people . they must live with our decisions also.
we cant expect God to bail us out .

This was one of the reasons I stopped believing in the Christian God (I am agnostic). If prayer works, then what of the unfortunates who have no one to pray for them? If prayer doesn't work, then what the balls are we wasting our time for? If God does only what he wants, ever, then what difference does prayer make to Him? He can ignore, comply, go the opposite way just to spite the person(s) praying -- it's all so contradictory, so circular in its logic (or really, lack thereof). Sorry man, I just can't work for that corporation.

Anonymous said...

12:19 - though I disagree with you, I respect your right to believe that way.

Many folks are turned off by Christianity and other beliefs because of pushy religious zealots.

Understandably.

How many "shut up mzchiefs" are on this board?

Bet ya Barry knows.

greta said...

I tend to agree with mzchief on this one. These individuals did wittingly put themselves in harms way.

What did they expect? It was stupid to climb that mountain in this type of weather. It's that simple.

m&m said...

There is good example of this in 2 Kings chapter 20. King Hezekiah is sick and the Lord through the prophet Isaiah tells the king to get his house in order for he is going to die. But then the king prays and then God tells Isaiah to tell the king he will be healed and his life was extended for 15 more years.

I think there are a lot of factors involved in all these scenarios. God's will, the faith & righteousness of everyone involved, the fact that we are all mortal and imperfect, the stupidity of people in general, etc.

11:54 - I guess you're one of those bleeding heart dipshits who think just as long as people are living their lives it's okay for them to do what they want. You sound like you believe people who make the choice to do drugs and fuck up their lives should be saved by taxpayers, women who make the choice to get knocked up should have taxpayers raise their kids and people who make the choice not to work should have taxpayers give them a place to live and food to eat. The key word in those situations and the situation with the dipshit climbers who made the choice to risk their lives is "CHOICE"! As a taxpayer I think I should have the choice not to pay to unfuck the fucked up choices made by idiots.

I have read Barry's blog since before it was a blog and it was just "The Muse". I too have watched the comments of Mzchief and I have never seen a time when Mzchief contradicted herself. Of course since you comment as anonymous there's no way in hell of telling if you keep your shit straight. If you want to join the Mzchief Hater's Duo, go ahead. From your comment you look like you'd be a perfect fit with those two dumbasses.

What are you, 11 or 12?

Calling people names and making declarations about their character and physical appearance when YOU have NO foundation or KNOWLEDGE upon which to base your assertion makes YOU appear to at best be ahhhhh...uhhhh...IMMATURE.

Just a clue for YOU, when YOU resort to calling someone on the net FAT you have LOST the argument and ALL credibility. One more clue, the NEXT time you decide to call someone "inbred" make certain to use spellcheck and while you are at it give grammar and punctuation a try.

I stand by MY prior assertion, based upon the THOUGHTFUL content of NUMEROUS people who comment on BARRY's blog, YOU would NOT be the person THEY would select to act as THEIR representative.

In light of your poorly composed comment, I feel safe in advising you to stay OUT of your parent's liquor cabinet and to sober up BEFORE your mommy and daddy arrive home.

Uh, excuse me, but mzshit contradicts herself ALL the F*CKING TIME!!!! She is a psycho and LOTS of people on this blog don't like her. Apparently you are just as stupid as her or you would have realized that by now. She has a need for constant attention and the only way she can get it is by pissing people off on this blog. She is pathetic! Personally, I do not hate the crazy bitch...I feel sorry for her.

Anonymous said...

Mzshit...you call people names all the time. We all remember how you treated 18 year old Nathalie all because she disagreed with you about the US being the best place to live in the world. You made fun of her art. How low can a older women like yourself go to insult a young woman like that. You are clearly a nut case. Why didn't you bother and explain why the governments are corrupt in poverty stricken countries? What about Latin American countries? What started all the corruption? Who is to blame?

mzchief said...

To anonyNOTHING 6:10...
YOU are either LYING or GROSSLY mistaken. I do NOT as a rule call people names. WHEN I am LESS than complementary of ANYONE my criticism is based upon the CONTENT of their commentary.

As for MY comments directed to Nathalie, I STILL stand by MY OPINION that her "art" was/is immature and UNSOPHISTICATED. It stands to reason that the "art" of an 18 year old art student would be "immature and UNSOPHISTOCATED." As for MY handing her arse to HER, you can bet I would do it again to ANYONE, especially an 18 year old NEVER done a bloody thing for themselves, punk kid who takes it upon themselves to slam the United States. IF you have a PROBLEM with SOMEONE defending the United States against the rantings of a disrespectful Swedish KID than perhaps you should consider packing your RUBBISH and moving to ANOTHER country. IF you ARE from a country OTHER than the United States, keep your rubbish OUT of the U.S.

I will NEVER apologize for defending AND loving the United States.

As for YOU and the rest of your ilk NOT liking me, THANK YOU. I have MORE pride and decency than to EVER want the approval of "people" like YOU.

In words YOU can comprehend. Kiss MY bony arse and DEAL with YOUR issues.

I'm disappointed in some of the dialog that occurs on this blog the last six months or so. It doesn't seem like folks can respond back and forth anymore without name calling and cussing. Everyone has their own opinions on all these various subjects that Barry brings up and so what if they don't agree you. Let's try and stay on point and stop the name calling and clean up the language. Thank you.

Anonymous said...

Mzchief...you just called Nathalie a "punk kid." Is that not name calling???? You've called overweight people all kinds of names and so on and so on....You have contradicted yourself once again.

M&M....I agree with you, but when someone openly admits to posting on this blog with the sheer intention of upsetting others...what do you expect?

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, Nathalie did not slam the US. She just disagreed with you about this country being the best.

To anonyNOTHING 10:08/10:10 (Nathalie)

YOU can bet your last dime Nathalie at 18 is a "punk kid". ESPECIALLY when she has NO problem slamming the United States on a blog KNOWN to be chiefly visited by U.S. citizens. I was MORE embarrassed for the Americans who elected to NOT defend the United States against the obnoxious little Swede than I was annoyed by the wannabe "artist."

MzCreep, they just didn't want to appear as obnoxious and disgusting as you were, and embarrass us any further than you had already. You are obviously psycho. Go back to to GB you fake American limey biatch.

ex-eagle...I guess since you have a login name on this blog you think anyone really knows who you are? How is it any different than posting as anonymous? If you must know I am the one who posted at 11:54 and I am not a bleading heart liberal, I actually vote primarily republican. What you and many others don't realize is that you can be a conservative and still have compassion for your fellow man! I agree that these hikers made a dumb mistake, one that I am sure they wish they could take back, but I guarantee that if they were a part of your family you would want them to spare no expense searching for them! I like how you label people based on a single comment, but I guess that is what you get on a politically motivated blog!

Anonymous said...

Well said 1:43 I was 4:06 and had the chance to work w/ Mr. Kelly on a project in Dallas he was a landscape architect and a great person and yes it was probaly bad judgement and I'm sure they and there families wish they could take that back...my point is that it is easy to judge and be critical but truly sad on the outcome. Mzcreep and ex are quick to point out all the mistakes they made but like I said if they or the families where lost they would be the first to scream help.
