There's A Very Good Argument This Is The Way It Should Be Done

The great Malcolm Gladwell had a podcast this summer discussing that, from a physically logistical standpoint, the underhand free throw gives a person much less chance of error, and he brought in the great Rick Barry to explain.

The fact that the underhand free throw isn't used today can basically be traced to one thing: People are fearful of being made fun of.

The underhand free throw discussion has been ongoing since the days of The Big Dipper or Wilt the Stilt. I'm talking later in Wilt's career as I'm sure you know.

Malcolm Gladwell is in no way shape or form considered to be great. Also, he is a journalist not a physicist. Furthermore he was never a basketball player and should stick to what he is good at, revisionist history. Don't even get me started on the nutjob NBA outcast Barry.

The underhanded free throw is not used because it is less effective and less accurate, simple as that.

Listen to the Gladwell post, commenters. Wilt went 28 for 32 from the free throw line when he scored 100. Guess how he shot them -- yep, underhanded. He was a 50% free throw shooter over his NBA career, but an 88% shooter underhanded. He stopped doing it because he didn't want to be one of those things Trump would grab. Phenomenal podcast. Right alongside Gladwell's Hallelujah, Blame Game, and Generous Orthodoxy podcasts.

7 footers might benefit from this style because of unusual arc created from their high, arm length and proximity to the rim. Hard for the to shoot a free throw the right way, but for everyone else it doesn't work.

The underhanded free throw served Rick Barry incredibly well, and Barry was 6'7", almost a half foot under 7. I suspect it would serve a person of any height equally well with practice.

I ALWAYS SHOOT FREETHROWS UNDERHAND.

It's dumb. You can develop great fingertip feel and "softness" with an overhead shot, and it's also a natural position. Since when is holding both arms together in front of your crotch a natural position?

AS would with practice doing it the correct, natural way!
