Even if you don't care about college football, this is amazing. It was hard to turn on a TV this fall without being told of the heart wrenching story of Notre Dame linebacker and ultimate Heisman Trophy finalist Manti Te'o battling through a double tragedy: In a span of six hours in September, his grandmother died as well as his girlfriend. The latter from leukemia. He fought on with the season and magazines and sports stations swooned.
Now Deadspin.com, in a rather lengthy post, delves into the story and concludes: There was no girlfriend. If this was a hoax either he or Notre Dame created for the purposes of media attention in order to build up his Heisman chances, this may be one of the craziest stories I've ever heard.
And when you hear about "Twitter blowing up", it is stories like this that do it.
Edit: Notre Dame issues a statement saying Te'o was the victim of the hoax girlfriend. That would be even more unbelievable.

And now Notre Dame is saying they were notified on Dec. 26th by Te'o that he was the "victim" of a hoax.

Whether he's a victim or a co-conspirator, this is so weird and insane.
And the University is hleping them investigate? If my kid and my money go to that University, I'm pissed! Great use of University resources. Sounds like a personal issue to me.
If he was a "victim" and knew it at least as far back as 12/26, why didn't he and/or the university hold a press conference so that there would be no further reporting of his "double tragedy"?
Oh, because that would have made him look dumb. Gotcha.
Instead, they all chose to keep it quiet and now that it's exposed they'll play the "victim" card? Seems shady.
Obama and The White House did it to drum up support for anti-leukemia and gun control legislation. Obviously.
It seems the "victim"claims he met her and she even traveled to Hawaii to visit him. And he was duped?
Some wise man said that Kekua was a metaphor for Notre Dame's hopes for a national championship. i.e. nonexistent.
What's next? A federal investigation when someone gets short sheeted at camp? It's a hoax, a prank. It's called catfishing. And the crime committed is what, exactly?
