Did They Forget To Tell Alvord's Football Coach He Was No Longer Coach?

A loyal reader just called my attention to a story in the Messenger about Curtis Enis going back to Alvord as Athletic Director and football coach. And then came this . . .

Edit: Potential commentors - I'm not going to post allegations that aren't part of the public record or can't be readily verified as true.

It's understandable he's in denial.

Crazy small town (and small school) politics!

Anonymous said...

Maybe the "changes" that Deweber had not been informed of had only to do with who the new coach will be and how the coaching staff would be structured; rather than the fact he, Deweber, would not be the coach.

Anonymous said...

Idiots. There is a reason the athletic director and football coach are employed in athletics rather than being brain surgeons.

Deweber: Well, that wraps it up for today. See you first thing on Monday.

Supt: Coach, hang on a minute. Let's talk about that whole "see you monday" thing.

Why would the Alvord School Board approve the hiring of an AD that had already been reassigned over misconduct that was brought to the open and other accusations that he chose to keep in a closed board meeting so that the towns people would not know what those accusations were?

Thanks Alvord for making Rhome look high class!

You will edit this but will post anything and everything about Chico.....are you a Curtis fan????

WE LOVE THE DEWEBERS!!! They are both honorable people who deserve better than this!!!! They are well respected by all of the students. And yes we agree it is all craziness and it makes other schools look like high class. Our little crappy town is up to it again. None of the schools communicate about anything so it makes sense that Deweber would not of been brought into the loop on something as big as this effecting his career!!

Anonymous said...

There seems to be nothing in the Alvord school system that a big dose of mismanagement can't fix. Is there a school board in Alvord or is it a school brick?

Anonymous said...

Alvord taking lessons from Chico on how to screw over your AD!

Anonymous said...

Sounds to me like a bunch of losers griping because they aren't getting their way. Certain parents are mad because the football coach butt kissing days are over. Now the coaches will actually have to work and all the kids will be given a chance to play because of their ability, not just their names.

Anonymous said...

Did Deweber even apply for the AD position? I heard he didn't because he was going to retire. any truth to that?

I am just so tired of our town being divided. It all started when Trice hurt people to get rid of Enis and now the pendulum has turned and the school board is stacked and now people are getting hurt and caught in the middle to bring Enis back. I believe alot of people are caught in the middle of this madness and not able to speak up for either side in fear of retaliation inside and out of the schools and in sports. It saddens me because I don't see things resolving anytime soon. How they handled bringing Enis back isn't any better then how it was handled getting him to leave. Both sides are guilty and it is our kids who are suffering the most out of all of this.

***On another note, there is no reason to talk unkindly about Coach Deweber. He has been a wonderful coach and mentor to our young men along with the other coaches currently staffed at Alvord. The boys love and respect him and that should speak loudly.

I think you hit the nail on the head. People are still hurting and the town is still divided because of what was done in the past. But this is a brand new day and a great opportunity for Alvord athletics. Coach Deweber is a nice guy,and the boys do like him. From what I hear, Enis is too. People in Saint Jo hated to see him leave and most from Alvord are glad to see him return.
This little town has gone through so much this year and there is more to come with this budget crisis. Is it too much to ask to let the past go and work together to move forward?

Anonymous said...

Amen 9:24 and amen 9:55

Decisions are made and their is not anything we can do. Let's forget the past and focus on the future.

If our town stays divided the kids are the ones that suffer.

Anonymous said...

In most small towns there are Christians and non-Christians; rich and poor; black, brown and white; good kids and delinquents; long-married people and the chronically divorced; sluts, skirt chasers and monogamous; cat people and dog people...all these contrasts...and yet it's football that can "divide the town"?

Anonymous said...

Enis is only concerned about winning and himself or should I say concerned about himself and then winning. EGOmaniac.

Anonymous said...

I don't know all the conditions of what happened in the past...but I've heard it wasn't too nice. I just can't figure out "why" he would want to come back knowing the division and bitterness he would be causing between friends and families.

Anonymous said...

I have no problem with Enis coming back if it is done the right way. I would just hope that with things being as sensitive as they are that Enis would take it slow and steady for the remainder of the school year. I know that he is excited about being back and has alot of plans that he wants to follow through with but I feel that that exuberance will cause more conflict at this time especially with the seniors and their parents, but with all the boys in general. I feel like Deweber should be allowed to continue as head track coach for this year and then Enis can take over from there. You know that he is not coming back anyway with his wife not being there anymore. Have the decency to let him finish out the year with him doing what he loves. Isn't that what you would want done for you Curtis? The healing process will take cooperation from both sides!!

Anonymous said...

9:18 It is not football. It is people doing whatever it takes to get what they want.

Anonymous said...

Well....to start with......most of you need to go back and read exactly what the statement said...."...he will be serving as the teams offensive coordinator.....". Is offensive coordinator the same as head coach? Not in most schools or systems.

6:39
Yes, the Dewebers are loved and respected. They have both brought their own special blend of teaching and methods to Alvord. Mrs. Deweber was one of the most respected and loved teachers in AISD. Coach Deweber is loved and respected by the kids. True. He is the head coach with a 13-9 record, or in better perspective, a 60% winning record. Most schools wouldn't care for that stat. New "ideas" for the program can do nothing but help. Winning is not all about " ...being loved by the kids..." but the program and it's capabilities.

2nd 6:39
"Is there a school board in Alvord or is it a school brick?"
Yes, there is a School Board in Alvord. A VERY capable School Board, led by a VERY capable Superintendent. A School Board that posted an opening for an AD, got applications, reviewed the applications and selected the most qualified applicant. Just like all other School Boards. An individual who has a proven record.

8:13
It's not so much "...the butt kissing days are over...." in as much as the days are now here where coaches will be held responsible. In the past, there were no evaluations of the coaching staff that would help the program to move in a positive direction. Coaches did pretty much as they desired. Structure was just a pretty picture on the staff chart. Now, it's time to "walk the walk".

9:24
"How they handled bringing Enis back isn't any better then how it was handled getting him to leave. Both sides are guilty and it is our kids who are suffering the most out of all of this."
Actually, you are completely wrong. The Trice/Enis fiasco was a Kangaroo Court using the pretext of Enis breaking the rules. When, in fact, he followed the rules established by Trice.
I honestly believe the kids will not suffer but benefit.

9:23
Unless you know Coach Enis personally, you don't know how far off and wrong you are.

Yes, this town was divided by the Trice/Enis black eye. A black eye that was posted all over the internet and this blog. The largest majority of it without knowledge of what was actually behind it and the little regime that was in place trying to be placed into key positions for the $$$$$.

6:39
..."Our little crappy town is up to it again. None of the schools communicate about anything so it makes sense that Deweber would not of been brought into the loop on something as big as this effecting his career!!.......

Try attending the School Board meetings and stay on top of the "crappy town" goings on or call Danny Hodges and have one of his signs put in your yard.

Texas athletics is a unique thing in itself. The citizens demand a winning team. Baseball. Basketball. Track or whatever. Coach Enis has more banners hanging in the gym than most of you are aware of. These banners and trophies were not handed out by the generosity of the UIL. They were earned by the determination of the coaches, sweat and blood of the kids and the backing of our "crappy town".
Yes, it is a sad issue that our town is divided. But, that is the same in every town in Wise County. Rhome was mentioned in the above post as being"classless". Shame on you. Every city has division and always will as long as "sides" continue to exists. That doesn't make the town a "crappy town". Just having some crappy citizens who work to constantly tear apart a community.

Proud citizen of Alvord.

If the decisions were wrong 3 years ago, what makes them correct now? When will correct decisions be made concerning education and not just athletics? It's too bad all of this has divided the town. Life decisions are more important than 10 Friday nights. Education has always come first in our house, THEN extracurricular. That decision resulted in a full scholarship. I wish every parent could see and every child could earn that. Best wishes Alvord.

Is it the Mayor or Mayor Pro-tem that needs so desperately to be replaced? I definitely fear the Mayor Pro-tem is the most damaging.

Any school system worth it's salt knows that (and I may give myself away on this)"...it's one thing to play football....it's another to know how to spell it...".
Education is first and foremost. I don't care who's child you are, if you cannot maintain a passing academic level in our school system, you will not be allowed to participate in ANY extracurricular activity from football to finger painting. Cut and dry.
AND if you care to check, just for the record, look and see which schools in Wise County received an Academic Excellence standard, and how often.

As for Mayor......the thought has crossed my mind...maybe later down the line.

This is to address 12:47 -
I agree - the post you refer to sounds like it is from someone with a great deal of sense....
Alvord does need a qualified, caring Mayor....The Mayor position plus 2 city council seats are up for election..AHS is moving forward", - Let's move our focus to city business and the goings on in our city . There are issues that need to be addressed.

It's ashame in such a small size as this that there can't be anonymous ballot boxes where you have to show I.D. going in but no one knows your vote on certain or controversial decisions involving school and city. The outcomes could be very different. So many people are afraid to speak since everyone knows who everyone is. We supposed voted for the leaders in the schoolboard and city officials...but in some cases they only made it because no one ran against them. We don't participate or get involved until something we don't like happens and then we just complain.

What's done is done...either stand up and protest with a better solution...or let it go. Does anyone realize our cities crisis? The unbelievable changes that has taken place over the last two years...it's not too late to make a difference in this matter, election time is coming up...lets get involved Alvord.

Alot of fear of running against the mayor pro tem is how it will affect their child in school. It's crazy. Does anyone know the exact number of people from the council to EDC to city employees, auditor, lawyers, etc., that have left, withdrawn, fired, or their position no longer in the last two years? How on earth did they get so much control? Obviously because we didn't stop it. Not positive, but I am understanding that the other council members know that someone doing inappropriate actions can be voted off by the council with a two thirds vote? Why did they open credit cards to our tax payers money when it has never EVER been needed before? Why do they have to spend weekends flying and hotel stays when they can be done online? Is it still in effect that their water is not allowed to be turned off if they are members of the council? Heck, sign me up!

The schoolboard needs new people, too.
With the huge state budget cuts coming, what schoolboard would hire an AD that the ISD has been fine without for a year and a half, along with a new baseball coach (who is not even a certified teacher but the grounds keeper) when there are qualified coaches already employed by the district? I thought Texas schools were trying to cut back....not add more salaries. Will they be asking parents to spend more on supplies? Taxpayers to pay even higher taxes? Or will they cut classroom teachers for the almighty sports program?

Anonymous said...

10:59 - check out the full article in the Messenger. It clearly states that Ennis is AD and named himself Head Coach and will act as OC and that he has yet to determine the DC or other coaching positions.

People in Alvord talk like there is a rich football tradition they are trying to protect. Like there's a long list of former players who have went on to play college football? Let's keep things in perspective......its small town football. Like all small towns you should be proud of your young men and their athletic efforts. Alvord does have great young men in all their athletic programs. It doesn't mean they are stacked with enough talent to win every game, no matter who coaches them. If coach Deweber isn't given an opportunity to return next year it would be a shame. He and all the other coaches in the district have done an excellent job of developing young kids into young adults. Winning isn't everything. Building character and leadership is more important than any win. And if you think winning is everything, Deweber and his staff had a successful season last season by any teams standards, especially Alvord's. I wish all the current coaches the best whether they remain with the district or not. Alvord doesn't deserve you.

Where in the heck did you get your info?? You are so far out in left field it's unreal. Groundskeeper!!!???? Please.

7:06
".....no one knows your vote on certain or controversial decisions involving school and city."
Obviously you haven't been to a School Board meeting or know the Texas G'ovt Code very well. ALL voting must be done in public. If there is no one in attendance, that isn't the Boards fault. If you are referring to the Enis issue, there were several in attendance, including myself, who witnessed the voting by the Board members.

Anyone not satisfied with politics are encouraged to go to the polls and vote. Unfortunately, the minority of our "concerned citizens" exercise that right, but, stay at home, complain and watch the 6 o'clock news for election results. Then complain again.
10% of qualified voters go to the polls and determine what the other 90% of us get or will do.
Does "SHEEPLE" have a meaning to you? It should. That's what we have become.

"what schoolboard would hire an AD that the ISD has been fine without for a year and a half, along with a new baseball coach (who is not even a certified teacher but the grounds keeper) when there are qualified coaches already employed by the district?"
Where to begin? Fine without an AD for 18 months? I'm sure that was used as an oppurtunity for the "qualified coaches" you speak of to step up and show their capabilities - did you see any of the boy's coaches do that? I sure didn't. Instead, they went around mouthing the sup's every move, taking naps in the field house while a kiss-butt dad mowed the fields, and telling the boys a bunch of lies about the situation regarding Mr. D's wife and about the potential new AD. Now that is "quality."
As far as the new baseball coach - ask those "quality boys coaches" why they didn't step up to the plate to take that job. From what I hear, they made a pack to let the superintendent "squirm." That is putting the kids first, isn't it?
And - the new coach not being a certified teacher just saves the school money. Lets look at what they pay the certified coaches that sit on their butt all day, does it even compare? Coach D makes over 70K a year....did he even teach a class? How many classes do the other boys coaches teach and teach well?
Sounds like the sup made a brillant move by hiring a good coach that didn't require the mega paycheck. And...if the new AD can take the place of three coaches and teach a core subject, my bet is that it will save money their too.
"He and all the other coaches in the district have done an excellent job of developing young kids into young adults. Winning isn't everything. Building character and leadership is more important than any win."
Without naming names, I must laugh at the "building character" comment. Look at the fate of their most recent graduated "leaders." Those that ARE of good character have their parents to thank for that, not the boys coaching staff.

on the subject of: ".....no one knows your vote on certain or controversial decisions involving school and city." Since you only clipped a part of it, prior to that I was stating that people WOULD vote or probably have more of a voice if it could be done in a non-public ballot that everyone knows your choice. Not stating that it is in option, but that it would be nice if it were. Meaning only that alot of people don't stand up for issues because it could affect family and friends.

And I'm not so much talking about the school board as I am city hall. The city shouldn't be divided though. If someone causes so much controversy why would he want to come back? If he WERE that outstanding...wouldn't other schools be fighting to have him? Why would he be leaving a school in the middle of the year?

Read the Mess - it answers most of the questions you pose. And until the "old Trice faithfuls" either die off or shut up, this town will remain divided. After what Trice and company pulled, I don't know why he would want to come back. The fact that he does speaks very highly of his desire to make a positive difference in the boys program. I say we leave the guy alone and let him do his job. When the boys teams start winning, no one will care about this crap anyway.

As a student, I can't wait to get of this town. I love the people here and I highly respect both Deweber and Enis. But it's the parents and the gossipers who make this town the way it it. All this political drama, isn't political...it's lame! In my opinion, everyone needs to grow up and quit acting like your the ones in high school!!
Besides, has anyone seiced their own judgement to think about YOUR kids? You say that's what this is all for but it's not! This is about what he said and what she said and I don't like her cause she likes him...high school stuff!!
A kid can't even have their own opinion because of their parents being in their ear every second!! Instead of telling a kid to hate Enis for the spot he's filling...tell them to work hard for themselves which is what they should do regardless of the coach. And for an athlete who likes Enis, should they feel guilty for missing the Dewebers?
Anyways, I feel like I'm lecturing a bunch of kids my age!! What's done is done, the fact of whether you like it or not, well that's up to you. But quit giving it to your kids...shouldn't you be teaching them to push through any adversity, there's more important things in life than football...or athletics for that matter. After the tragedy that effected all the students this past November...shouldn't we have learned that???
Sincerily,
Student athlete to whom this actually concerns..

I think Alvord ISD just needs to make all its budget cuts from athletics and focus on EDUCATION! Then when the economy improves and the funds are available rebuild the athletic department from the ground up.

LET'S NOT FORGET THE PURPOSE OF SCHOOLS ARE TO EDUCATE OUR CHILDREN.

At the rate we are going, we aren't setting a good example.

I agree that there comes a time when sitting around and complaining about things is unproductive and even destructive. But we live in a representative democracy where elected officials are accountable to their constituency and where the voters have a protected right called freedom of speech. What you are seeing in action is called freedom. It's how things work here in this republic. I don't like to sit around and complain any more than you but if people never stand up and participate in their community / state / country, then you deserve whatever your leadership decides to do to you. Our forefathers recognised that participation starts with communication and that is why they protected freedom of speech, press, and assembly in the Bill of Rights to our Constitution. As a student, I'm sure you are used to following rules dictated by those in authority over you and feeling that there is nothing that you can do about it; but there is. When you become an adult, you vote, you pay attention to what your elected officials are doing, you dialogue and even debate, or you even run for office. That's what we enjoy here in America, a chance to participate. And if you should find yourself in a position of leadership, whether it be a member of a school board or the President of the United States, you better be able to take a little disagreement and listen to complaints and keep an open mind because that it what greases the wheels of our freedom. As soon as we shut down any attempt to complain or disagree, then we are creating for ourselves a tyranny. As for myself, I voted for all of the members that currently sit on the board. I am disappointed in the way things are being handled right now. It appears to me that decisions are being made for personal reasons or vindication and not because they make sense. I have heard too many eye-witness accounts of questionable behaviour from the newly hired coach to feel good about the decision to bring him back, It seems like a risky thing for a school to do. As a parent, the safety of our students and my children is the first and foremost concern. That should be the school boards priority as well. That is why when elections come around, I'll be casting my vote for change.

10:28 "And for an athlete who likes Enis, should they feel guilty for missing the Dewebers?" I used to like and have respect for the Enis' but not anymore. They allowed the Dewebers to get caught in the middle of all of this under the pretense of "well that was what was done to me" syndrome. It is just all about them and they don't care who gets hurt. I don't know if you should question feeling guilty for missing the Dewebers but for liking the Enis'. I am sure that there will be more teachers / coaches who you will also soon be missing, just give it some time, you'll see. Some hard life lessons are soon to follow.

I really feel sorry for the coaches on the boys side of the program. Those guys are about to be out of jobs, "if their philosophies and Enis' philosophies are not on the same page. We are in a time right now of teachers losing jobs because congress is cutting the budget for education. Those coaches are going to have two options: go with the flow of the new AD and be "yes" men or see ya and good luck in getting a new job at another school district. Enis got the job that he wanted and the board felt he deserved. Alvord voted in those board members and now Alvord is seeing the results of those votes. I will leave this comment with, "Who knows Alvord kids better than Curtis Enis does?"

I dont believe I was the only one that was for getting a new baseball coach. There were several people who were ready for change. If you didnt know I didnt care for the man then you never talked to me about the baseball program.
You cannot let a boy throw 120-130 pitches in a game and think its good for them, you cannot have a program where you never let your pitchers throw in practice then expect them to perform in a game. That would be like having your basketball team just dribble the ball in practice and never practice shooting.Yes I did complain about his coaching ability. Yes we did the right thing by hiring a new coach and I think if you would ask any boy on that team they will agree.

It speaks volumes about who is in control when any school district in this "football loving" state of Texas hires an AD/Football Coach who has not coached football in 14 years. Furthermore, the majority of Enis's coaching experience is with female athletes.
Enis's return is not the result of his qualifications, but of a well planned and executed conspiracy to exact revenge and "award" Curtis to the very position that was sacrificed when he was caught red-handed being a rule-breaking brat. There is no way that Enis was the "most qualified applicant".

I can't wait till he proves all you "haters" wrong. According to my son, he gave all the junior high boys schedules and workout plans and they were all glad to have someone there showing interest. My son said that was the first time any coach has even paid any attention to them outside of football. I was hesitant too because of all the crap you guys put on here. But in his first day on the job, he has showed that he is a hard worker and he cares about building the program from the ground up. My kid and his friends are finally feeling like they matter. So he has my respect and if he can build the boys program like he did the girls, I have no problem that he hasn't coached football in 14 years. Good coaches can coach anything. I wish him and the other coaches all the luck in the world. With attitudes like those that I have seen on this blog, they are going to need it.

Per Larry Wilson's rant in the Mess "A professional code of ethics is involved," like he has any room to talk about ETHICS! Just google his name and Alvord ISD. There are plenty of reasons why he only got 25 votes in the last election. An old wicked man with an axe to grind.

looks like a snake, smells like a snake, crawls in the grass like a snake, must be Alvord's AD

Just sayin'.

I agree,But when snakes are put in places they should not be in, they can be harmful or even deadly.

I am happy Coach Enis is back, I am a former athlete of his. Now parent of students that are his athletes. The boys coaches dont care about what these boys do in sports. Look at the Football stats, thats the sport they cared about! They go to track meets and you never see any of them hardly. Coach Holson is the only one I have seen show an interest in a track meet. I have seen them stay in a tent at a track meet before. They dont know if their athletes are where they need to be etc.. This is something you would never see either one of the Enis' do. This affects the kids futures. It affects thier chances for scholarships. They are the same way with Cross Country, Basketball etc... Our girls athletic program is great. Our girls work their rear ends off. Dont our boys deserve the same? I dont care about who likes what coach better. They arent doing their jobs. I want to see the whole boys athletic department redone. They dont need them to be their buddies. They need them to coach and teach them something!! They will be happy when they start seeing the changes. It will build thier self esteem etc... I look forward to seeing the changes. I think Coach Enis is what we need.

I am a proud Bulldog Parent and former Bulldog myself.

I'm a boy's parent too and my kid is thrilled that they may actually get the same kind of training that the girls program was built on. They are tired of losing every basketball game and not knowing what event they are going to run until the day of the track meet. These boys WANT to be coached and coached to succeed. They are tired of being the "school losers." Enis will make winners out of these boys, and not just in football. As a boy's parent - I am looking forward to the results of hard work and a passion for winning. These young men need to get out of the lazy, losing habit and take some pride in their performances.

3:24 is right. During the last 3 track seasons the only one you saw standing near that track cheering those boys on was Rhonda. As a parent of a former Bulldog and Lady Bulldog I saw all the time that the girls coaches were the only ones that seemed to care and encourage the kids to do their best. They play fair and every kid gets a chance to play. I know for a fact in the football program a few years ago the best players were played both ways and rarely sat on the sidelines and even when the point spread was ridiculous they still put those same kids in over and over and over. And you wonder why a lot of boys quit football. Whose going to recruit a kid with blown knees and who is just plain worn out by their senior year! Look at the trophy case and banners hanging in that gym if you want to discuss qualifications. And as for Larry Wilson....well 25 votes pretty much sums it up doesn't it?
