Email From Yesterday

Hey Barry, I was just at Wal-Mart in Decatur about an hour ago and I saw an old lady and man standing with a sign that read "trade for gas" the lady was holding the sign and the man had a teddy bear. Have you heard anyone else say anything about this? Send your newsteam out to cover the situation!

This goes with the "did anyone else see this". About 2 weeks ago on a Friday, I was driving through the square at lunch time. On the courthouse sidewalk at the corner on Trinity & Walnut there was a guy just standing there playing a guitar and singing to no one in particular. I did a double take because initially I thought it was the little man that stands on 51.

I can't believe we didn't get a blog photo of that one. Am I the only one that saw this? Courthouse news team is falling down on coverage.

I would take some trade from the pic below this entry for some gas.

Sounds very scammy to me, especially if they are seen there on more than one day. They play on peoples good nature and make them believe they are helping the kid/elderly during tough times.
Buy a bear at the dollar store and trade it for ten bucks. Nobody is going to take the time to actually put gas into your tank

I saw some folks in an old green station wagon in the parking lot of the old WalMart once. The lady had a sign up saying, "Need food, please help. God Bless You." I stopped knowing if I decided to help them I had some food my mom had boxed up for me to take back to school and I could share that with them.
Man, I gotta say that was one of the best decisions I've ever made. They were in their late 60's probably and were living in that old car. He only had one foot and was blind because of diabetes. She was a breast cancer survivor and had a problem with her heart which made her feet swell up like balloons.
During our visit I asked why she didn't put the sign on the windshield so she could prop her feet up to help with the swelling. She replied well,"I can at least stand there. It may be all I CAN do so I think I should at least do that much. Besides my husband takes his turn also." Every minute standing there must ahve been pure agony. I really wasn't mature enough to grasp how sadly desperate their situation was but, I was touched. I gave them all the food I had plus 10.00 dollars and a pillow and blanket. She cried the most honest tears of gratitude and relief and hugged me tight. She smelled oddly like a faint mixture of dirt, soap, sweat, medicine and motor oil. He did the typical guy thing and tried to man up while he shook my hand vigorously and squeezed my hand tight saying," Thank you for helping provide for my family. If there's anything I can ever do for you I'd do it. She's all I've got in this world. I always worked but haven't been able to for years. I got to tell you I was ready to give up."
They are probably long since dead now as is my mother. However, we had that one moment in time when some people whose lives to that point and futures were so totally different, we honestly could not have begun to understand each other had we tried. But that day we were just human beings doing what we could.
The End

The guy on the square was the naked cowboy from Times Square. He just hadn't warmed up to the likes of Wise County folks yet, so he didn't know if underwear would be acceptable attire for the courthouse lawn.
