From A . . .

. . . random Wise County emailer this morning:
I was standing in line at a local grocery store this morning and a lady was buying milk, bread, and eggs with food stamps. If that does not take long enough, I became irritated that I was in the "short line" and it was taking a really long time because the lady that was running the check out, had no clue how to use food stamps. Then, to TOP OFF my irritation, the customer, (very nicely dressed I might add) tried to slide in some Camel cigarettes with some "extra food stamps" she said she had..............LORD ALMIGHTY, the checker had to ask the manager, then they tried to "confiscate" the food stamps from the "smoking in line lady."

Has the makings of an urban legend chain email.

only in the WC

Barry, you should have been more supportive of "smoking in line lady" because it would be easy to assume from the limited information offered in your rant that she is more likely to vote in your primary than mine.

that's nothing...

i was at a (mostly likely the same) local grocery store and asked the cashier if they had any bagels. simple question i thought. here was my response -

"no, this isn't a jewish community. if you want a bagel, i suggest you go to LA or go buy some frozen ones at wal-mart"

i was too dumbfounded to respond...

If you would have followed the lady outside she would have gotten into $45,000 vehicle...food stamps and expensive vehicles...the cocktail of the WC.

To 10:30 AM, "I don't care who you are, that's funny right there". I would have been dumbfounded, too!!

A similar incident two weeks ago in WalMart. I was behind a hispanic lady who was barely able to speak English. She was checking out a basket overloaded, top and bottom, with everything imagineable. She had clothing, small appliances, utility items as well as food. Her total rang up over $80.00 and she whipped out a WIC card and got the whole thing for $30.00. Who pays the difference? WE DO! Is she here legally? No one dares ask.

That is sad -- she needs to let the people who really need them use them, not her.

WE NEED A GOOD GROCERY STORE IN WISE COUNTY!

10:20, clearly you have lost track of the times. The reason that Republicans now dominate Texas politics is their seduction of folks like the "smoking in line lady" into a belief in the righteousness of the "conservative cause."

And why shouldn't they hold to that belief? Clearly Republican control in Texas and (until recently) Washington did nothing to interfere in the government programs they rely upon.

WE DO NEED A GOOD GROCERY STORE IN WISE COUNTY AND RUMOR HAS IT BROOKSHIRES IS COMING TO BPORT!! YIPPEE! THE OWNER OF THE IGA'S IS GOING TO SHIT HIMSELF! NO MORE IGE ! NO MORE DIAMONDS!

Ten bucks say the Camel sucker was hispanic woman (probably illegal) and driving a really nice low rider with those wheels that keep spinnning. . . and we gotta pay the price.

I personally think a list of all "Food Stamp" holders should be made public for all to see.

I bet that list would shrink before your eyes.

I thought they smoked menthols and drank 40's?

A bagel? Is it anything like Texas Toast??? If Allsup's don't have it, you just don't need it. Once you try one of their bean burritos, you'll forget all about your dang bagels.

There's no such thing as 'food stamps' in Texas. It works more like a debit card.
As for WIC this very effective program saves much more than it costs by improving early development and health.

We NEED to stopy babysitting illegal immigrants! Let them follow the same laws We LEGAL citizens do! Something is very bassackwards in our country when we overlook our own rights and watch while illegals take them for themselves.

Anonymous said...

Blame it on the Republicans!! Our country is in this shape because of them. As usual the rich get richer and us poor working class keep getting poorer! Look at the salaries of our elected officials compared to those that work under them and actually do the work. They are barely above foodstamp wages!

food stamps? in wise county? you gotta be kidding me!

Do NOT make summary judgements based on appearances. I've been in just two serious shouting matches my whole life. Once, somebody made a comment to my son and I (son was driving) as we were getting out of a car and walking into a store after parking up front in the handicapped space about how "my son's car had handicapped decal but that he obviously had no handicap". This person said we were "scum of the earth bastards" to use a handicapped space. Second comment came from someone in a grocery line who jumped me for being obviously "well off" and paying for some of my items with food stamps. I was a "cheating son of a bitch". In the first case, the person could not see the chest scars from my son's open heart surgery that at that time made it difficult for him to walk very far at that time, and in the second case the person did not realize I was buying some things for an elderly neighbor while out doing my shopping. I ripped them both a new hole...so my advice is you better be darn sure before you challenge someone that "appears" to be abusing something.

The service at our grocery stores has become as horrendous as the selections, cleanliness and over-pricing. Perhaps some outside competition will be good for all!

AMEN 11:56!! Walk a mile in our shoes before you judge!! I feel for you. I really needed help at one time. Worked full time have 2 small children but yet made 50 dollars to much for food stamps. Yet I could barely put food on the table. TRY GETTING HELP GETTING YOU CHILD SUPPORT ALSO!!!...A single parent can barely get by even making more than minimum wage. I could have gotten another job but then my kids would have had to be farmed out so I could work and you might as well not because any extra would pay for child care so why bother its a no win situation for the working poor!

hey i bet tha those little taco stands like we have along 1810 are serving food thats ingridents are paid for with food stamps remember keep working so that we support those on welfare and here ilegally and lets not forget all the medical care we pa for them to get

Anonymous said...

12:24PM, bootstraps. All Republicans pulled themselves up by their bootstraps, why can't you?

Anonymous said...

If you can't afford the kids, then STOP having them! Responsible folks figure what they can afford and adjust accordingly. If you can't even take care of yourself on your income, then DON'T HAVE SEX!

Anonymous said...

12:53, I'm sure all these fine, upstanding Republican people never have a spouse that leaves their family high and dry, do they?

Oh, I forgot even if they do, the woman should pull themselves up by their bootstraps!

Anonymous said...

12:53 you didn’t understand 12:54 comment? She would was able to take care of her children and could had given them more if her Ex would had taken responsibility and paid for his children. So maybe you should address your comment to her EX who was the one "THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE SEX".

Food stamps?? Texas hasn't used food stamps in years. Everything is done on Lonestar cards so fraud can be stopped. It sounds to me like someone is feeding you a load of bullcorn.

I would'nt get too excited about Brookshire's. Just wait till you see their prices.

Anonymous said...

11:56, Why didn't your son stay in the car instead of lugging him into the store?

Anonymous said...

Because she is using food stamps/Lonestar automatically makes her hispanic? If you do any shopping in Diamonds, IGA, Wal-Mart, or any other grocery store in Wise County.. you'll notice that there are as many white people swiping their Lonestar cards as hispanics. As far as the story you were fed about "having extra food stamps to buy Camels".. it's b.s! Because what 1:54 pm said is right.. it's all in debit card form now. They give those out as easily as it is to receive WIC. Both resources are there to help the needy.. yet I've seen women getting there baby formula, cereal, and eggs with WIC cards then putting it all in the backseat of their high dollar cars. But that's Wise County for ya!

12:24, some people think nothing of stealing other people's husbands too

Man some of you people are brainless jerks! I hope you a-- holes end up having to do it on your own some day. Just because some need a little help at one time or another does not mean they are bad people. You fools label every food stamp mom as white trash, crack whores or undeserving illegals. Typical uppity snobs. I'm on my feet now and doing quit well. It is hard to ask for help. And for all you non paying dead beat parents may you all rot in hell. You don't deserve your children. And you should all be steralized! Some people should not be allowed to reproduce. Especially you snobs who pass your ignorant opinions onto your litter of up and coming snobs!

10:55a.m., I, (10:20a.m.), agree that the Republicans have done a lousy job of reforming welfare, but they didn't grow it to the mess that it is now. My point is that "smoking in line lady" knows which party has used welfare to buy her vote. And I'll bet you couldn't find in the same billfold a Lonestar card and a voter's registration certificate stamped "voted in the Republican Primary". If this story is an urban myth, so is the one about the Republican that convinced the welfare cheat to vote for them.

Do they still give out that government cheese? Boy, that made the best mac 'n cheese ever. I think it was called "monthly commodities" back them. I helped my grandmother pick boxes and boxes of that stuff up at the courthouse, and deliver it to the needy and elderly. It was fun. We visited with the shut-ins, and it made me feel good.

I'd go to an elder friend's house, do some cleaning and yard work for her, and she'd make a nice large batch of it for me. Yum. That was my only charge - a big bowl of steaming macaroni & cheese. Yum again.

Luckily, I've never had to go on welfare, but I did eat some of that excellent good ol' American cheese back in my youthful days - it was probably made in Muenster, at the old cheese factory.

I'll bet at least half of you critical posters are hanging your precious "middle-class" lifestyles and opinions on a tenuous little thread. Are your mortgage, truck, SUV and credit card payments being made on time? Do you think you can sell your McMansion at a profit these days so you can "move up"? Oh, and did you have time to get your hair tinted and your nails re-tabbed? How many of you wonder if your job will be there tomorrow?

Some of you assuming, condescending assholes need to get a clue. Judge not, lest ye be judged, and pray to your gawd that someone will have compassion on you if you ever fall into need.

Haha....Bridgeport won't be getting a Brookshire's. Those rumors are just that, rumor's.

Y'all can give up the grocery store whining...Kroger, Albertson's, Brookshires, Tom Thumb and other similar grocery chains will NOT go into a town the size of Decatur or B'Port. I've worked in the grocery business for nearly 20 years.....trust me, I know what I'm talking about.

Where's the Albertsons that was supposed to go into Decatur when they passed the Beer/Wine proposition??? Still waiting....

Sorry, but when I see these "card" whipping IN NEED folks driving away in their brand new car/SUV/truck.... I have a REAL problem with feeling sorry for them. If they are soooo IN NEED then you explain why it is fine for them to pay $500 or higher payments per month on vehicles instead of using that money for substinance!

5:56, By gawd, I think you have a point. Be it a point about as sharp as a bowling ball.

Man what a flashback-someone mentioned government cheese or guvmint cheese as it was called in the heady days of my youth.People would give my family their cheese.I thought back then maybe they didn't like it or something.Only later did I realize they felt sorry for us because we were SO poor.Man you could make a grilled cheese like out of this world um um good!
If I remember correctly they handed the stuff out at the Reunion Sheriff posse Building.
