Fox 4 News' tonight's lead story were about the grass fires in Wise County.
Sounds crazy.

I know this will cause an uproar but, what the heck.... How long can we expect a group of volunteers to provide our Fire Safety. We pay for police and EMT service, why do we refuse to consider some kind of paid fire protection. And before anyone responds....I don't have a single family member that is a fire fighter. These people do an amazing job! Should we not find a way to pay for some of it. I realize we will always need additional volunteers regardless.
WISE COUNTY HAS 17 VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENTS AND 0 PAID. BOYD FIRE DEPT. IS THE ONLY DEPT THAT HAS AN ADDITIONAL TAX JUST FOR FIRE SERVICE IT IS KNOWN AS EMERGENCY SERVICE DISTRICT 1 OR ESD. 1 THE OTHER 16 DEPARTMENTS ARE TRYING TO COLLECT SIGNATURES ON A PETETION TO ALLOW THE CREATION OF ESD 2 WHICH INCLUDES THE REST OF THE COUNTY VFD'S AND WILL TAX ON THE RATE OF 6 CENTS PER 100.00 ON YOUR PROPERTY TAX. THIS TAX WILL PROVIDE BETTER TRAINING WITH THE HOPES OF GETTING ALL OF THE VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS IN THE COUNTY CERTIFIED TO THE SAME LEVEL AS ANY PAID DEPT IN THE DFW AREA, ALSO THE TAX WILL PROVIDE BETTER EQUIPMENT AND POSSIBLY FASTER RESPONCES TO ANY EMERGENCY. IN RETURN ALL THE BENIFITS OF AN ESD THAT GETS TAX DOLLARS COULD LOWER YOUR HOUSE INSURANCE. AS A TAX PAYER AND THE FIRE CHIEF OF ONE OF THE SMALLER AND POORER DEPTS. IN THE COUNTY I AM FOR THIS TAX. ALSO THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS AN ESD HAS TO PROVIDE TO THE STATE ON A YEARLY BASIS SUCH AS AN AUDIT FROM EVERY DEPT. AND TRAINING RECORDS WHICH INCLUDE OVER 20 TRAINING HOURS PER DEPT MEMBER. PLEASE VOTE AS YOU FEEL IF IT MAKES THE BALLOT IN MARCH
david walker needs to have his people start arresting these idiots who continue to illegally burn. there is no excuse to say one did not know we ares till under a burn ban. ir never rains, so that's a no-brainer.
i hate to point thids out to you but wether we pay for our fire service or not that is not the reason we have the fires . if people would listen to the those who have put the burn ban into effect and THOSE WHO DO LIGHT UP AND BURN THINGS DURING THIS BAN NEED TO BE PUT IN JAIL ON ARSON CHARGES AND ALSO CHARGED WITH ASSLT CHARGES FOR EVERY PERSON WHOS HURT BOTH CIVILIANS AND EMERGANCY WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! prehaps we would see the stupid idiots who think that they can do whatever to think twice before they try to burn things during a ban on burnning and i would also like to say that our vfd's do a great job out here and we are lucky to have these men and women around we the calls go ou8t
Oftentimes we take advantage of volunteer services without realizing it. A lot of people seem to think that all fire departments are subsidized through our taxes; therefore, we are providing appropriate funding for these services. Please understand that this isn’t necessarily true. Don’t get me wrong, we are providing some funding to every recognized fire department in Wise County, but the funding is inadequate at best. The departments in some of the larger towns (Decatur & Bridgeport) are slightly subsidized by their respective cities; however, funding is inadequate for the services required in the local communities. Through the graciousness of those cities they allow their “city” money to be spent protecting people outside of the limits of the city. Believe me, there is no volunteer department in this county that can operate only on the funds provided by the county. Please don’t misunderstand me; I believe that many of our local volunteer fire departments are excellent, well trained individuals with excellent intentions, but unfortunately that isn’t true for every department. Departments that do not participate in training activities, many due to the lack of funding, could be a risk to themselves and to the people and property they volunteer to protect. Ask your city/county representatives to adequately fund your fire departments and watch your insurance premiums drop significantly. I have been a volunteer fire fighter for approximately 30-years and have witnessed some progress in regards to funding; however, we have a long way to go in order to provide the services the great people of Wise County deserve.
spiritrider at 10:38, I frequently take exception to your rants on this blog; however, I think you're right on in suggesting that the culprits responsible for these fires be identified publically and they be vigourously prosecuted. How else are we going to get the idiots to stop burning in these conditions?

yes,
Thanks to all the VFD's and I agree we need to find a way to pay for this service!
We make a small donation each month through Walnut Creek SUD. Sure hope the VFD is getting the money!
I am willing to donate $50K to help keep our families safe. Where do I sign?
