Wise County's Weird Caller ID Problem

I had heard about this but don't know the extent of the issue or the reason it occurs.

Any cell phone call wit 393 shows up on caller ID as wise regional. Has been for about 2 months.

Here's why it occurs. Unfortunately there is no easy way to fix it.

The convenience services commonly known as Caller ID and CNAM aren’t the same thing. Caller ID refers to the telephone number and CNAM refers to the name associated with the number. The name and number are displayed on the phone of the person being called, but the two pieces of information are being delivered differently.

The phone number of the caller is “sent” by the phone company (carrier) that originates the call. The Caller ID name is not sent with the number. The name is fetched by the local phone company (carrier) of the person being called. Then the name is added to display along with the number on the receiving party's telephone.

The local phone company of the person being called does what is called a CNAM dip. It’s the “fetching” I was referring to in the second point above. For each call that comes in, the local phone company of the person being called dips into a database (CNAM database) that matches the name registered to the caller's number. The problem is that not all carriers use the same database. There are several CNAM database providers, and the local carrier might subscribe to one or two of these databases, but not all.

I have a 393 # and it shows up as Wise Regional

I have a 393 number and mine doesn't show up Wise Regional, but I know this is an issue. Does it show just the name as Wise Regional or does it also incluse the number?

So, as one of the comments says, it's Century Link...again.

It shows up as wise regional but with the caller phone number.

Yep, my son's and my sister's both show up as Wise Regional when they call and several others do too. Pretty sick of paying money for caller ID when most calls show to be Unknown, Private, or Wise Regional! WTH! Used to get the callers REAL name and number both!
Phone company needs to be sued!

I have had this happen several times also. And what is scary is that I have a loved one IN Wise Regional. Jolting to have a call come in and see the hospital listed as the caller.

It needs to stop and NOW!

Write letters to Dr. John Walker, chief of staff or Steve Summers, Administrator.

If they don't know this, they should!

You might not believe it, but we don't have caller ID on our land line. It cost extra and I so feel the need. I answer every call if I'm home; but, we do have a message receiver.

Uhh, 07:30 am--Dr. Walker is not Chief of Staff, Dr. Shue is.
