Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

  • Some lawyer from Colorado (who I don't think I know) sent me this towel. Love it.
  • Mitt is taking a beating on that 47% comment. And now I can't help but think about it every time he mentions how he will get the economy "going again" and put "struggling Americans" back to work.
  • Romney was in Dallas last night appearing at a dinner at the Hilton Anatole for donors of between $50,000 and $100,000.  That wasn't the best timing.
  • There was a criminal trial in Decatur yesterday in district court where a guy with past felony convictions pled guilty to second degree theft and elected to have the jury assess punishment. The range was 2 to 20 years -- I think they were deliberating as I my DWI trial broke for the night.
  • Two guys were shot on an elementary school playground in Mansfield late last night. Cops don't know what happened, but there's no plan to cancel or delay classes today.
  • The Update says the Bridgeport "stabbing victim" from last weekend has been released from the hospital  I hope this is his Facebook page because that picture is fantastic considering the circumstances.
  • Lindsay Lohan was arrested in New York last night for leaving the scene of an accident. Girl's trying to reclaim her title.
  • Former UT great Vince Young is on the verge of bankruptcy. He once received a $25 million guaranteed signing bonus?
  • I don't think I've heard so many bogus ads on the radio. Heard one this morning for a "youthful memory" pill.
  • The NFL is using replacement refs and last week we saw more fights and almost fights than ever before. The theory is that the players figured out what they could get away with on Week One and then went after it on Week Two. I bet we see more personal foul flags in the first fifteen minutes of games this week than ever before as the refs try to reclaim control.
  • I ran by Fox News last night to see how those boys were handling the Romney news. Man, Sean Hannity was visibly angry. But I sensed he was angry because he sees this election slipping away.
  • I've known lots of people in my life who "don't pay taxes" because of their income bracket. Those people struggle.
  • There was a crazy murder-for-hire story last month in Carrolton where a guy alleged tried to have his wife killed. And it almost happened: She lost an eye when the bullet struck her. But yesterday in court there was talk of reconciliation

Once we pass the tipping point where the majority of Americans pay no federal taxes, but elect politicians who offer more each year in entitlements the country is lost. That's not going to be good for humanity.

What I took from Mitt's comment was that nearly half of BO's voting group relies on fed aid. I agree, there are way too many people that collect aid, and they know BO's plan is to continue doing so.
When Social Security (or other forms of fed aid) were established, it was not set up to be income for a person's lifetime, it was set up to help them get back on their feet. It was when the "many" were helping "the few". Now, there are way too many that would rather sit on their butts at home than go out and work. Now, it is the "few" helping the "many", and most of the "many" don't want to get back on their feet. They are content to sit at home, using food stamps, soaking up fed aid.

Having great wealth can make a person oblivious to those who are struggling financially.

Romney is a nice enough guy, but he is just simply out of touch with many Americans, including older ones on fixed incomes facing increases in food, gasoline, insurance premiums. Those folks are out there.

If he wants the vote of ALL Americans, he needs to speak to the needs of ALL Americans. The guy should actually get out there and see for himself, rather than taking the "advice" of political advisers.

What's he doing? Oh, spending time with rich contributers in Dallas, and blowing off his mouth about things he knows NOTHING about.

Everytime the guy opens his mouth, his ignorance comes out.

Oh, I get it. The left wants people on welfare and the right wants people off welfare and working if they are "factually" able so they can provide for themselves.

What a horrible thing for those on the right to expect success and equality for all.

Obama has to be considered the favorite to win the election in November for a number of reasons. Not the least of which is the fact that we're in the third day of national conversation about Romney's "47%" comment, while the media has ignored (much less criticized) Obama's culpability in the American embassy attacks. Romney's innocuous remarks have received more media scrutiny than did Obama's "more flexibility after the election" promise to Medvedev when Obama didn't realize the world was listening.

It's like we're standing around discussing which song the Titanic orchestra is playing, rather than running for the lifeboats.

So fun watching the Right Wingers foam at the mouth over how the media is (are?) taking Mitt's comments "out of context." Gosh, aren't these the same folks who themed their entire convention around an Obama quote which was taken just slightly out of context? Good times.

All workers pay employment tax. All property owners pay local and school taxes. All consumers pay sales tax. Most low income workers pay no "income tax". Much of our military pay no income tax. Romney only claims to have paid 14% income tax recently. The guy is just out of touch with working class reality.

wordkyle said...

915 - Who are the "Right Wingers" who claim the Romney comments are taken out of context? I haven't seen a single defense of the comments that say that. To the contrary, most "Right Wingers" accept the statement as is, and agree with the point he was making. So please give us the examples of foaming mouths which you cite.

All evidence to the contrary. he's on record as saying his job is not to care about 47% of Americans.

Obama's "more flexibility after the election" promise to Medvedev

It actually received extensive coverage back when it happened, and months later you're still bringing it up. Don't worry, in several months we won't be talking about Romney's gaffes anymore.

I hate ANYONE who is a Democrat or Liberal today

First, congratulations on making the distinction between a liberal and a Democrat. Conservative Democrats such as myself appreciate the hat tip.

How narrow-minded and misguided you are. That's just pathetic.

Why do many not pay federal income tax? Because your congress has for years continued to provide more and more loopholes and benefits - without increasing income (taxes). And what about our corporations? Remember they're people, too. Boeing had a $5.1 billion profit last year and has paid NO income tax for the past 5 years. GE is a pretty big and profitable company that also pays no income tax. Are they included in the 47% slackers that Romney wishes to ignore in his America? There are many who reduce their federal taxes using school credits, dependant credits, medical expense credits, home mortgage credits and so on. Are they slackers too?

@wordkyla: The fact that Obama is considered the favorite is kind of weird.

I'm on Social Security and Medicare so I don't pay taxes; however, actions speak louder than words so I'm voting for Romney, not Obama. Romney was not talking about me or our military but for those who are dependent on our government, not for temporary help, but for long term that is unstainable.

Obama's actions on cutting back $600 billion on my medicare benefits (payments to my medical providers) in order to pay for health insurance for an additional 30 million who are uninsured is the main reason I will not vote for him.

Another reason is the unemployment rate for college graduates (my grandchldren) is 50% because of his economic policies, increased regulation and increased deficits that do not promote small business to expand and create jobs.

Another reason, I will not vote for Obama his ideology is to spread the wealth. When I go to the grocery store and see food stamps be abused, I agree with Romney view on the large number of those who think they are entitled to food, homes, free medical care from those who built their business and work hard to provide for themselves.

Believing in redistribution and the government is responsible for what you have, you did not built it is not what makes America great, it weakens us!

Actions speak louder than words. Obama promises from the 2008 were not kept. Clint Eastwood is right, we need to let him go.

9:15 A slight difference: Obama's quote was clearly out of context and repeated continuously. Romney's were included in direct, unaltered context. 10:32 - I hear what you're saying but honestly, it is your generation that has put America in this position. YOUR dependence on Medicare puts a strain on your grandchildren. YOUR dependence on Social Security has put this country in jeopardy. The fact that the baby boomers waited until they could ride the government gravy train, instead of planning for their retirement...is a burden on America. It is definitely okay to have possessions, but the instant gratification (let's buy new shit constantly) was propogated and funded by you. The neglect and mismanagement by America's dumbest generation has put this country into a tailspin. YOUR policies allowed for the Enron types and wall street corruption. YOUR policies allowed for unabated environmental destruction. YOUR policies have allowed politicians to get fat in office.

Don't be so naive to think that one man's 3.5 years in office has caused all the damage. If you want to help, go get a job. Why don't you go start one of those small businesses everybody is talking about. No money? Borrow from your parents.

Katy -- You're correct about the Republicans' (in)ability to turn the corner on Obama. As I said, the fact that we're still discussing the video of Romney stating information that's been around for a long time is one of the reasons. This video has kicked embassies attacked, dead ambassadors, dead American soldiers in Afghanistan, cancelled joint NATO-Afghan ground missions, US credit rating downgrade, etc. out of the headlines. The UK press is covering it, but they're a faint whisper in the American media hubbub over Romney's remarks. Americans attach greater importance to what they hear the most.

Agreed with your post 100%!

Old Barry boy here and the rest of the liberal ilk want it to look like Romney has already lost the election, but the truth is that come election day, I believe the majority of American voters will vote Romney over Obammy for the very reasons you've stated. The liberals always underestimate the overall intelligence of the American electorate and believe that all they have to do is continue to lie about Romney, while glazing over ALL of Obama's mistakes and misteps and no one will be the wiser. I have more faith in the American people that that and Obama is getting caught in too many of his own lies to cover them up anymore. If I didn't know better, I'd think we were back in 1979, with Carter as POTUS, severe unrest in the Middle East, a very bad economy and devaluation of our dollar. WOW!! looks like a perfect record for ultra liberal Presidents so far!! 2for 2 and this time Obama trumped Carter with a dead Ambassador!

Gary -

You are correct, sir. The selfishness of the Boomers has driven this country to where it is, and it is my generation (I'm 35) and my children that will pay the price. For the first time in America's history, a succeeding generation (the children of the Boomers) will be worse off than their parents. All because the Boomers felt entitled to get all those benefits their parents fought for, set up, and PAID FOR. Now my generation gets to clean up the mess by losing all of those entitlements (there's no way I'll retire with Medicare or Social Security), paying the tax bill for the Boomers who used up those entitlements, and figuring out some way to keep the country's economy from falling apart for our kids. The Boomers and their selfish refusal to actually raise taxes to pay for what they were using will cripple this country unless my generation bears the weight.

People calling Medicare and Social Security entitlement programs have it wrong. Those are programs we pay for and if congress would not have raided the piggy bank so many times, the money would be there to pay what is owed. Entitlement programs are medicaid, student grants and subsidies, community block grants and the list goes on and on.

The reason GE and others do not pay taxes is the tax corporate tax structure in this country forces them to move their profitable business overseas. In the US, they would pay 36% on profits. The can create an office in Lichtenstein and pay 15%. If they pay in the US, tack on another 15% when they pay those profits in dividends and that % due to increase to 25%. How is that not double taxation?

Romney paid 14% net because most of his income was in dividends so in reality, the money he received was actually taxed at 50%. It is really not that hard to understand, if you want to.

"Money will begin to lose its value long before the cataclysms hit. This will be worldwide, and in almost all human cultures. Why should this be the case, when, as we have stated, the majority of humanity will either be unaware of the coming cataclysms or in denial? The financial structure of the world's financial empires is really quite fragile. Look to the swings of the stock markets, the bond markets, and other speculations. Panic sets in at a moment's notice. The problem is that financial matters are based on human perceptions of worth. This moves about, even in the most stable of times. The value of an item increases during shortage, plummets during times of plenty, and otherwise is affected by various perceptions of being in the right place at the right time. There are gamblers aplenty in the financial arenas. Look to history, to see how little it took to create financial panics. What with all the dire predictions made by many, true or untrue, many people worldwide will be on edge. Add to this the increasing crop failures, with consequent food shortages, affecting the markets in commodities. Humans of good heart concerned with survival through the cataclysms are advised not to look to the money markets for assistance." Per the Zetas

I worked for over 50 year. I saw the aftereffects of two wars and the up close effects of another one. I scrapped by and work all the overtime I could get. I rented and saved and eventually bought a nice home to raise my kids. During all this I paid into the Social Security system because it was promised to us as a retirement vehicle. During most of this I paid Medicare tax. I built up my own retirement account to go along with the Social Security. Little W. cost me half of that money. I hope the rest holds out.

Now you gripe because we are spending your social security. We aren’t spending yours. We paid for what we are getting. If you have a problem with that then you need to be working on getting your own future secured. We earned ours so keep you grubby generation x hands off of it.

Our biggest mistake was the generation we raised. You make entitlement a dirty word but think you are entitled to whatever you want (including our Social Security). We gave you too much and thought you would appreciate it and become better citizens.

And now you will vote Republican? How do you think they will handle you Social Security and Medicare? But you will vote Republican because someone said Obama was bad and Michelle Obama removed Cookie Monster and added Veggie Monster. Somehow you turn that into a bad thing (Veggie Monster is from 2007). Republicans say reduce taxes on the rich. Most of you aren't rich. Do you think Romney will write a personal check to balance the budget? Someone will have to pay, but not the rich.

Darrel...I happen to agree with you and the earlier poster about social security but the question I have is, how did "Little W" cost you half your savings? I lost savings during that time as well but nowhere close to half. Were your investments high risk? I lost about 15% during that time but my investments were low risk and very modest return. What is killing people nearing retirement age is the artificially low interest rates. A nominal return of 4-5% on CD's would put this country back on track financially but the Fed insist on making money free for borrowers, therefore killing the people that managed to save a little for retirement.

And by the way, I'm helping my grandson get a college degree and helping with a Masters!!! So, he can not be one of the 50% of college graduates unemployed.

And for your information, Gary, I pay over $300 a month for Medicare, Supplemental and Prescription coverage, not counting over $100 per month for prescription co-pays. I do not abuse Medicare either!!!

Congrats 8:42 for successfully providing for yourself and family thru your business. However please acknowledge that you did NOT build the road to your store or provide the police and fire protection or the army that kept us free! We all helped "build" that.

Well, I'm delighted that I'm not playing the game according to how you fellas think I ought to. That convinces me that I must be doing something right.

We ALL got the money to build all of this, through BUSINESS. Everything government does is paid for because of BUSINESS.

So yes, business owners DID and DO build ALL of this. Without business, there would not be any infrastucture or any improvements in this country. Wake up.

2:17 Using your logic, it was the consumer who built your business. Without them you would have no income to build anything. The point is that we're all interdependent.

8:06,

No, the point is, we could very well have a great economy, without a megalithic central government.

We cannot have a government, or anything else, without business.

Obama is killing business, which will kill everything else.

My god, 2:49, we'd have no consumers or business without women getting pregnant! How far from reality do we need to get?
