Random Thursday Morning Thoughts

  • There's a theory developing out there that TCU officials wanted a high profile arrest roundup to counter the bad press associated with multiple assaults and other crimes on and around campus over the last couple of years. Kind of a "We Are Cracking Down On Crime" PR campaign. The fact that TCU police were so involved in the case along with the well planned press conference yesterday gives legs to that idea.
  • Seriously, once TCU officials knew that four football players were selling a little weed, wouldn't one "cut-that-crap-out-or-you're-gone" meeting with Coach Gary Patterson have solved that problem?
  • Which gives rise to another conspiracy theory: The academic minded administration thought Patterson was getting too big for his britches after  his fantastic success over the years. Thus, the Ivory Tower Boys wanted to send a reminder of exactly who is in charge at TCU. (Had they been influenced by the news over the last six months of how Joe Paterno had been the most powerful man on campus at Penn State?) If Patterson is to be believed,  he knew nothing about the investigation until yesterday morning.
  • And why would the arrest affidavits contain completely irrelevant quotes from the targeted football players that anywhere from 60 to 82 football members had failed a recent drug test? Those statements don't have anything to do with establishing probable cause for a warrant, but they do embarrass an entire football program. And Patterson.
  • You think the Auburn, LSU, Florida or any other SEC campus police will ever be involved in an investigation of a football player for weed? Not in a million years.
  • "They broke the law. That's all I need to know." - That kind of comment always blows my mind. What's your message? Be a good little boy and do what your government tells you to? Hey, does Rosa Parks ring a bell?? The Boston Tea Party? Draft avoidance during Vietnam?
  • Changing gears . . .
  • SMU's basketball team scored 28 points last night. That was for the whole game.
  • You have to be over 40 to understand this, but can you believe Josh Hamilton gave an interview to James Robison?
  • Finally had someone come out to to take a look at my faltering (hot) water heater. After weighing the cost of repair vs. getting a new one, I got a new one. (The old one was about 10 years old.) But, man, I hate spending money to replace things.
  • A day does not go by that I'm not stunned by the gullibility of the fans of Sean Hannity.
  • That crazy Parker County torture case kind of brings to mind Silence of the Lambs.
  • I've watched about five minutes of it, but I learned that the "bad fingers" civil case being tried in Wise County is a medical malpractice case.  One thing I heard the female Plaintiff say regarding the pain she had gone through was (slightly paraphrasing), "I've had two children. I would rather have 50 children than go through the pain I've experienced with my fingers."  After the verdict, I'll give you my thoughts on that.

So selling dope to college kids is the same as Rosa Parks standing up to discrimination?

Katy Anders said...

Hmm... Rosa Parks?

I'm thinking that maybe the drug stuff was not civil disobedience by the players...

Maybe.

The number of kids who fails kind of blows my mind, though. I mean, I'm pretty bad when it comes to obeying useless laws, but... that still seems surprisingly high.

Kids today. Hell in a hand basket.

There IS is clear difference between smoking it in your own home and SELLING it, right? I support gay marriage but I don't want to have anal sex with a man. You do see the difference right?

A big issue in all of the "TCU-thing" is that we as a society "molly-coddle" and worship Division I-level players so much(all the way from high school on up). So--is it any wonder that so many exhibit very little decent, honest and admirable character traits? That's why Tebow and others like him stand out so distinctly! Hey folks, they run on grass (or turf), and carry, pass, and kick oblong balls while they do it! :-)

"Your Government” is elected people by the by people for the people, oh yea who wrote and passed the “LAW”. But you only think that applies when you want it to.
Barry if it wasn't for dumbasses like these kids you would be a poor, homeless and still bitching.
"IT"S ILLEGAL" and they got caught!
Now let the public or a Judge do what they do best, hear the facts from one side and some wild tells of mistreated childhoods from your side. I would think that if you’re right then they will walk away with little being done, just like you did when you were deciding these cases.

"Hey, does Rosa Parks ring a bell?? The Boston Tea Party? Draft avoidance during Vietnam?"

Rosa Parks did not break any laws, The Boston Tea Party participants knew they could be arrested. They were protesting a law made by a government they did not have any representation in to affect which laws were made. I won't go into the draft avoidence thing with someone that believes his freedom comes free and no one ever paid a price for it. That we should just accept things like the terrorist bombings of 9/11 and move along.

Our government is designed so we have a voice and affect which laws are created. It may even take being arrested and locked up to make the point, and not everyone will be 100% in agreement in a democracy. But, a law is a law. True, politics may have played a roll as to when and why certain laws are enforced or looked over. But, when enforced if proven guilty, not much can be said.

You lost a lot of credibility to your drug argument with the Rosa Parks and Boston Tea Party references. Maybe a closer comparison would be the moonshiners of the Prohibition era. I bet all of these TCU scholars will create a new sport similar to NASCAR, except it will more resemble a game of hide-and-seek.

So by this theory, if someone had told Whitney Houston drugs could kill her, she would still be alive? Ha! That's what's wrong with this whole generation! Given too many damn chances!

Consilium ac prudentia said...

Look BG I am all for civil disobedience but there are consequences. Rosa Parks knew that there would be consequences and made a decision. I don't remember her cussing out any TV reporters either. But to even think that these kids were doing this as an act of civil disobedience is ignorance. Funny how you keep putting illegal drug use in the same context as the Civil Rights Movement. Do you honestly believe they are the same?

Anonymous said...

I'm as left as just about any of your readers, but comparing college students selling drugs to Rosa Parks is wrong.

Your comparison not only fails to make the point you want, but it devalues Rosa Parks.

Step back. Think about that. Then fire off an "EDIT".

DF Bob Villa, I am glad you are with me on this important issue. I don't know when people will wake up and stop kicking around the fluffy stuff (race relations, drugs, sex, religion, politics, etc) to discuss the hard issue of what is really important to AMERICA - home appliances & hardware!

Patterson knew about the drug problem because on Feb 1, he gave the whole team a drug test (it's in the report).

Two top recruits changed their decision to go to other schools right before signing day and told Patterson that it was because of the high drug use on TCU's football team that they ran into on recruiting visits.

Patterson freaked out and gave the whole team a drug test .... Feb 1.... national signing day.

"They broke the law. That's all I need to know."

That is the problem with today's society. No one seems to care that the law's have been broken. Or we give you 6-7 chances and a slap on the wrist before you either kill someone while driving or die of an overdose. It would be a lot better for the latter for us on the road! You seedy lawyers always finding a way to get your dumb ass clients off and ways to get around the law. Laws are made for a reason. Smoke a little weed and do a little coke Barry? May'be they should start drug testing you every now and then.

BG, that was a really bad analogy with Rosa Parks, draft dodging, protesting, to selling dope.

We are a nation of people who can help alter or even change/ remove the laws from the books when we push it.

However, nowadays, there are very few people who act when they think whether a law is stupid or not. Most people just say, "I did it and now I pay, even though this is a stupid law, I will let it go".

This is how we get wrangled in to such laws as; No driving without shoes, Seat belts for everyone in the car that are adults, Making underage exotic dancers register as lifelong sex offenders, jailing people for 1st time weed offenses, penalize all people who hire illegals unless it is house or lawn care and so on and so on.

Anonymous said...

The real crux will be the punishment!!! Yes, it is wrong, but couldn't God-awful community service be more effective than ruining lives forever?

Anonymous said...

First, I agree that dealing controlled substances is against the law. With that said, I'm not sure if throwing these students to the wolves to reinforce your brand is a great marketing strategy for TCU. There are other ways.

Obviously all these tough-on-crime big shots commenting here never did anything in their youth for which they could’ve been arrested. They never once:
-Tried any drug (possession of illicit substance)
-Got drunk in public (public intoxication)
-Drove drunk (DWI)
-Got into a fight (assault/battery)
-Stole anything (larceny)
-Lied to a cop (false information to a police officer)
-Mooned anyone (public indecency/indecent exposure)
-Met a drunk girl and took her home (sexual assault)
-For you country boys, hired an illegal to help on the ranch (Federal INA laws)

If none of the above apply to you, you're either a damn liar or the most sheltered...and likely most boring...person who ever lived.

Anonymous said...

Another way to look at is like this: If you really hate government wasteful spending, a word whispered to the coach could’ve ended that activity immediately by the players. Think of all that taxpayer money that could be saved. The behavior is ended. The end result is the same, right?

Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty? Sounds like many of you have made up your minds already. I'm not saying these kids shouldn't have consequences for their actions but come on, this thing stinks to high heaven. Did they really need a 6 month investigation to know that college kids smoke weed and drop X?
These kids made a stupid mistake but would they be treated the same if they went to TCJC instead of TCU?

Hey Barr, quick question:
Does a liberally pointy stick have a finely tapered end similar to a freshly sharpened pencil, or is it more rounded off, so as to cause more of a bruising effect when repeatedly jabbing the irritable bear?

Here's a tip for bloggers and folks in general who e-mail and Facebook:
"Yea" isn't a word that people use in normal conversation. What you mean is "yeah".
Yea's most common usage is as shouted encouragement or praise (bastardized to "YAY!).
- cheerleaders and spectators imploring a player to win one, possibly for the Gipper.
- proud parents expressing joy over their toddlers' successful use of porcelain facilities and other minor milestones.
The only times it's used as a spoken word:
1. As a vote of affirmation by politicians (usually for a pay raise or other benefits)
2. As an interjection during biblical times, followed by "verily". Of course, one would have to be speaking good ol' 'merican, and not one of those jibber-jabber ancient tongues for that to happen
And yea, verily doth I realize they can have the same meaning, but they don't...

A good talking to from the Rhome City Council, and a zero tolerance sign on campus would have saved TCU a ton of embarrassment.

"They broke the law. That's all I need to know."

I believe you blogged about the punishment fitting the crime using the story of a teenage boy who lacerated his arm and bled to death after breaking into a vehicle.

I'll admit the reference is a bit dramatic, but serves as an example of the severity of the punishment these former students will be subjected. Some were busted with a petty amount of weed and for that they will be castigated for the rest of there lives as if they had committed some heinous crime.

Granted none will likely face the death penalty, but the stigma will follow them.

Anonymous at 9:36,

"No one seems to care that the law's have been broken."

Welcome to Texas. You must be new here, because otherwise you'd know that punishing law breakers is one of the very few things on which the state is willing to blow lots of money.

Here every politician, DA and judge runs on being tough on crime. And they deliver to a fault. Yeah, so a few people spend their lives in prison for crimes they didn't commit due to poor police work and nefarious prosecutors. We gladly look the other way.

So when you say "no one" cares about law breaking, I assume you're new here...rather than just being an ignorant drama queen who loves to play the part of the "last good man in a town gone bad."

A "word from the coach" to stop selling weed (and cocaine and ecstasy and prescription drugs) would have stopped them immediately, when the threat of being arrested and thrown in jail (and possibly prison) didn't? That's interesting.

You know as well as I, that I said nothing that would or could be construed as "arrogance or self importance". Go back and re-read because you are obviously projecting; self-appoiting as BG's blogging police protector against negative comments....now if that doesn't smell a little bit like arrogance!!!
