Trophies Thrown Out At Bridgeport Middle School . . .

. . .  allegedly to make room for art in the trophy case.  Some people ain't happy.

Trophies are ugly and gaudy. They need to go away.

Dumb, dumb, dumb. There are ways to free up trophy case space rather than a wholesale dump of old awards in the trash bin. Dumb.

OMG! Say it aint so! Something taking the place of something pertaining to athletics in a B'Port school?? Did hell freeze over?

Anonymous said...

I have to agree with the people who ain't happy. What a waste. Years of trophies thrown in a heap in the bottom of a school dumpster.

Next time do the responsible thing. Those things are made of recyclable plastic.

Anonymous said...

Thrown out..like in the trash? I hope not. Somebody could take the time to find people who would want one or some of them. If nothing else they could be sold for scrap materials.

These trophies should be made available to those that earned them in the day. I am sure that if the school is no longer interested, then participants would love to have them. Might even be a money making opportunity for the school. I would like to see a list of the ones thrown out to see if I was a member of any of those winning teams. We earned several trophies when I was in "Bridgeport Jr. High".

That just looks ignernt
don't those types of trophies have glue-on metal plates that are relatively easy to remove? Aside from any sentimental value, seems like you could recycle those by replacing the plates. If there's no room for them in a case, hand them out to students when appropriate. Have we finally wised up and abandoned the "Everybody gets a trophy" mentality?

Or couldn't they be donated back to a trophy store for re-use?

(side-note: funny episode of Modern Family last night about trophies, and their display.)

WOW -- what a bad decision. I can't believe they would just throw away trophies....recycle or like Anon 8:35 says, give/sell to the participants who earned them for BRIDGEPORT ISD!

Anonymous said...

And Bridgeport ISD wonders why people leave that district all the time. Stupid move on their part. Some of those trophies I have learned are for the math science team, and other acedemic achievements. Made this will hit national news and get the ISD some much needed WAKE YOUR ASS UP attention.....I have already moved my children and glad I did so.....

Anonymous said...

WOW! How sad! You might as well just tell the students who won these trophies that their hard work perseverance means nothing to Bridgeport ISD. When it somes to crushing a childs self-esteem, Bridgport ISD does it best!!!

Anonymous said...

8:55 glad you are gone.
glad you took your spoiled brats with you.

Anonymous said...

The last time was in Bridgeport Middle School and looked in the thropy cases the only trophies I saw present were ones earned by the math science team, including state trophies earned by those kids. If I had a child that had competed on the Bridgeport Middle School Math Science team I would be mighty ticked right about now!!!

Anonymous said...

WOW 9:14!! I guess the truth hurts doesn't it?? Have a little compassion! 8:55 is right. Something needs to be done about Bridgeport ISD!

CT said...

damn right people are upset!! I think these trophies were for academics???

Anonymous said...

CT

I understand that these trophies were indeed for academics, the middle school math science team. I have also heard that some of these trophies were won as recent as last year. Why weren't the students who won these trophies given the chance to take them home??

Mr. Mike Honcho said...

Pretty sure that any trophies awarded to an individual kid are given to that kid and he takes it home. Thats how its been for as long as I can remember.

What you see are probably team trophies awarded to UIL academic event teams. And yeah, they win A TON of them. So, how many do you keep? Do we keep every number sense team trophy from a mineral wells non-district meet from '01? '91? '81?

Sorry, Bridgeport ISD does have lots of problems to go figure out, but IMHO this ain't one of them.

Anonymous said...

Kids today are given trophies for just showing up to most sporting events. I can see how they are very non-chalant about them now, they don't mean a thing. When I was in school, you actually had to win the trophy by beating everyone else at the event. To me, a trophy is something to be proud of. To many of today's kids and parents, trophies are just another piece of junk to have to dust around.

CT said...

Anon 11:01...seriously? Won just last year?? And they are getting thrown in a freakin dumpster? holy crap. like trash from the bathroom.

I would bet money those children who actually were on these math/science teams, (or other academic teams whomever), and actually WON these trophies would have loved the opportunity to have these trophies or at the very least the template on the front of them, be it from last year, '01, '81 or '51. [I agree, Mike H, that these are team trophies. And proud for our Bport kids who won so many of them, too..Just wish this matter had been treated in a different way. And, yes, Bport ISD has lots of issues..agreed!!]

Hey, if you don't like BISD, pack your crap and your snot nosed kids and move!

A picture is worth a thousand words! This is exactly why so many good teachers leave Bridgeport.

Anonymous said...

1:15, Good teachers are leaving EVERYWHERE. And the ones that have nowhere to go wish we could.

Anonymous said...

Somebody please tell me where the best school is in this county! Oh and while you are at it please use facts to back up your position. Bridgeport ISD has problems just like every other system in this county.

For the parents who have moved their kids because things weren't going their way, pretty sure you ruined any positive experience they had learned no matter the school. They will probably be productive adults in society who know how to quit or move when things aren't in their favor. Way to go SUPER PARENTS!!!!

Really?

The math program has been destroyed by the administration at BISD! It hardly exists anymore, especially at BMS! What was once the the premier program in the state, copied by so many schools, is now just a small shadow of itself!! The jealousy of the sports crowd of all the state champions was too much! The previous poster was correct in that the trophy cases at BHS & BMS were filled by the Math/Science students successes-far overshadowing the success of all the athletic sports combined! Shame on BISD for trashing the success of the math teams!!

Anonymous said...

1:47 here...FYI, I posted that comment from home. Some of us don't have to go back to the grind until next week. Doh!!

Anonymous said...

Trophies, they don't need no stinking Trophies..........

Anonymous said...

We had BMS kids serving chili and soup all Christmas break to hungry citizens of our county. I am sadden that adults pick issues of Old Trophies being thrown away over what is really good in our community. Grow up! Sounds like a disgruntled former employee is stirring a pot instead of allowing things to simmer and move forward.

Anonymous said...

I have heard that Channel 8 is reporting on this story today! Reporter to talking to people involved on all sides.

Anonymous said...

6:59 You have missed the point completely! The math/science program is one of the best things that BMS has/had!!! How would you feel if all the results of kids feeding the homeless/poor being thrown in the trash! All the hard work and good done by the students hauled off to the dump! BMS has a lot of good kids who do great things-none of it should be trashed! As far as the disgruntled former employee-don't think that person would do this! That person devoted their life to the program and loved those kids!! How would that person throw the trophies away or even know they were thrown away if they are no longer at the school?

Anonymous said...

The story will be on Channel 8 news at 10:00 tonight!

Anonymous said...

unless they were in spanish no one at bport could have read them anyway

Anonymous said...

Imagine how many more Decatur would need to throw away

Anonymous said...

I recognize the trophies. I went to Decatur Middle School in the early 90's and won some of those very same trophies in math and number sense. Mine were a little smaller as Bridgeport was in a class by themselves and won most if not all meets.. The school should be proud of the accomplishments and inspire their students to the same. I have 30 or so trophies and while they are made of "cheap plastic", they will not find their way into a dumpster any time soon! As far as everyone getting a trophy, Bridgeport was a multiple state champion in multiple academic areas. Okay, I am feeling illl with all of the positive comments for Bridgeport so I will stop now!

Anonymous said...

Actually, the Bridgeport Math/ Science Program has always stomped Decatur's.

Anonymous said...

As a current employee at BISD, I can attest that that things are very bad now. The current administrator at BMS has made some very poor decisions. What can you expect from a former coach who was let go by the current AD, only to be rehired as the Assistant Sup. in charge of curriculum. No one checked references with the AD or the high school principal at the time. The BMS morale is at a all time low. It is time for the parents to make a stand. It will not get better until changes are made at the top.

Being a former member of this team. I know for certain that some of those trophies are rightfully mine and my teammates. We have not even GRADUATED HIGHSCHOOL YET. I believe that THIS is a slap in the face to not only the students that spent hours perfecting their skills but also the teacher that fostered the program.
A few years ago, when I was in middle school, things were dandy and wonderful at BMS. We were not the academically unacceptable ones. I do not know what has happened to the school that I knew a few years ago.
This is quite disappointing.

-A highschool student

Anonymous said...

My children are former members of the BMS math/science team. They helped earn some of these trophies. These kids and their instructor put in many long hours and hard work to earn these. To throw them away in the dumpster is a slap in the face to all involved! Bridgeport had an award-winning program, and this is the thanks they get for it!

Anonymous said...

I am also a high school student who was a part of the Math/Science team when I was at BMS and I am disgusted! I went to State all three years when I was at BMS and my teammates and I worked hard for these trophies and it sickens us all to see that they are unappreciated by the administration of BMS. However, it doesn't surprise me. The BMS administrators have always tried their best to ruin the Math/Science program, even back several years ago when I was in middle school. BMS has made a lot of poor decisions lately and they are an embarrassment to our community. No wonder why they are "academically unacceptable", they obviously do not care about the learning of their students.

Anonymous said...

Typical Bridgeport...throwing away trophies!...Really?...what a hick town & even 'hicker' administration...Sorry you kids have to call that place home...

Anonymous said...

The only way anything will get better is if parents complain. The admin wants everyone to think everything is just fine. The parents need to band together and take a stand.

Anonymous said...

Some of those trophies also belong to my child a former member of the BMS Math Science team. I am disappointed in this decision. Thoughtless indeed BMS!!!!

Anonymous said...

I must say that I'm extremely disgusted by this. I am also a former member of this team, and my teammates and I worked countless hours to become one of THE STATE'S best teams. I am enraged at the fact that our hard work, to the people in charge, is worth nothing more than trash!!

Kalyb R. Brown said...

I am also a high school senior that competed on the math/science team when I attended BMS. Countless hours of practice went into earning these and several long saturdays. These trophies aren't just symbols of the awards given to us they represent bonds that we formed with each other through these competitions this and how that hard work is rewarded by being recognized. This thoughtlessness just proves that we don't matter to the district after we aren't their responsibility.

Student said...

Undoubtedly BMS has gone down hill in the two years I have been away. Bridgeport's athletics has very frequently lacked while it's academics has been it's admirable point. I imagine this turn of events is more or less due to the dream of 'Friday night lights' and the entire fiasco of sports. In a country where athletes are seemingly more respected that politicians, scientists, and businessmen, I am certainly not surprised.

Anonymous said...

They were all sports throphies huh??? 45 academic trophies to 1 basketball trophy! Looks Principal Whisenant needs to go back to school to learn some new math skills.

Anonymous said...

I believe that the middle school might see some old familiar faces in the next 48 hours...
Just saying...

Anonymous said...

Looks like BMS & BISD administrators were caught lying about why the trophies were trashed! Principal said they were mostly athletic trophies that were damaged and outdated! The 50 trophies that were rescued out of the dumpster were all math/science trophies except for one! They were all in good shape and won within the last 10 years! This was a obvious slap at the former math coach who devoted her career to that program!! Shame on you Bridgeport Middle School!

Anonymous said...

How about instead of worrying about the trophies you worry about fixing the school and keeping this from happening again!

Anonymous said...

this really pisses me off i mean we earned those trophies and now all our hard work down the drain damn new principle this REALY pisses me off!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

i dont understand why Bridgeport continues to put Athletics in front of academics.... think about it... gotta pass to play... stupid move Bridgeport... oh and props to the dumpster diving moms

Anonymous said...

When will enough be enough? Teachers playing COD on school computers.
Yes it's way out of hand! And parents and students are both treated poorly by administration.

Anonymous said...

dont throw them away. send them to decatur high school. we have not won any trophies in years.

Alumni and Parent said...

What???!!!! Ms. Cole and Ms. Willmon, I want to personally apologize for this act of pure stupidity. I for one appreciate that you two, along with Mr. Kennedy, took our children in and made them winners! I don't care if the trophies were this years or twenty years old. This is history and our heritage that you have tossed Mr. EX coach. My son is 24 years old, and still talks about his awards. Tell me they aren't important! If Bridget was still there, this would have never happened!

Anonymous said...

As another former member of the Math/Science team, allow me to say "meh". It's time to move on. Let's not worry ourselves with things that happened in middle school.

Anonymous said...

I am sad to say as a Bridgeport graduate I am embarrassed to see how the district has gone down hill. It seems to me that academics don't matter anymore as long as the football team is winning.

Anonymous said...

Leave to the BMS admin to be more wheels off than the Rhome City Council! Channel 8 wack jobs!

Anonymous said...

The real issue at hand, is that there have been no academic awards for Bridgeport in 20+ years. Noodge... ♫

Anonymous said...

You people really lose sight of how things work with the math/science team huh! They take the top ten or so kids who have the smarts and forget about the rest. They spend countless hours during and after school teaching those kids. Even during their class periods math/science team came first. No wonder they are unacceptable in academics. It happens when you have teachers willing to focus on just a select few.

Oh and Mrs. Cole was one of my favorite teachers in High School but everything came in second behind the math/science teams.

Bridgeport officials are liars!

Anonymous said...

If everyone will ban together and e-mail in everything you know that is going on at BISD to wfaa: E-mail jdouglas@wfaa.com
Maybe we can keep the heat on them and the school board might get off there a.. and make some changes!!

Anonymous said...

The whole Bridgeport Independant School District needs change!! We need to start with the school board then move on the the administration and athletic director at the high school the on down to the admin at the middle school! We are loosing good teachers and administrators to other districts in our county due to the "good ole' boy" system! How many kids have changed schools this year due to bullying in the middle school that has gone unrecognized! I do not agree with the trophies being thrown away however, maybe some of the parents will band together

Jearene Hightower said...

Really???? How did Ms Cole's name get involved in this??? She devoted herself to all her students. I have known her for 58 years and your inconsiderate comments rile me. Education was always a first for any student where she was concerned.

Anonymous said...

The parents should protest on the front yard of these school officials.

Anonymous said...

This is crazy...1. Why would you throw out symbols of achievement in a school that desperately needs them. 2. Why would you lie about it and not just own up to the mistake.

I don't know why I am surprised. Did you know the schedule is designed at BMS in such a way that if you wanted your son to be in all AP classes he could not do that unless he was in football...CRAZY...

As a former employee I can attest to the fact that the admin does very little to improve the moral of the staff. There is no recognition when kids outside of athletics do anything spectacular for the kids or the teachers who pushed them to get there. Bridgeport could be an amazing place. There are some great people and kids there, but the admin is so concerned with micro-managing everything that they forget to let teachers teach and students learn.

Anonymous said...

I say quit living in the past. Who really gives a rat's ass about middle school 10 years after they leave?

Anonymous said...

Did anyone else notice how awful the grounds looked at the school in the WFAA video?

Anonymous said...

What's next? The students and the teachers?

Sounds like the Bridgeport School Board needs to investigate what's really going on at the middle school. If changes are needed, might need to start at the top.

Anonymous said...

Jearene,
Her name was mentioned because it is directly related to the math/science program in Bridgeport. No matter the level. She was great at it and nobody is denying that. But I was in her class when it would be stopped because one of the math/science kids would come walking into work or Mr. Kennedy would call her out.

Doesn't make her a bad teacher or person but it is just a fact.

The issue is each program has its place and there isn't one administrator employed that wishes a program would fail. It is flawed logic and ignorance spewing from some of these parents mouths.

People can gripe about football all they want to but it is the only event that brings the district money of any significance. It helps pay for other programs that are much needed but don't draw a crowd to support them.

If all these cry baby parents want to gripe about the school board then I suggest somebody grow up and run. Each time the election comes up most of the members run unopposed and have for many years. Either stop complaining or do something about it.

Anonymous said...

Kick out the Jocks! Run and do away with the staff that lied on WFAA!

Once again I want to state that I have no clue as to why you are dragging my sister, Ms Coles name into this mess. She nor I have any responsibility or role in what is clearly a mess. This was and is not about Math/Science on a High School level. It is about trophies that hard working young individuals in Middle School earned for that school and what many believe to be the improper disposal of them. We would appreciate the respect we believe we deserve and keep our names out of the association. I have my name displayed, as is clear, I would address you directly but it would be hard to know which anonymous I am speaking to. I personally think that if you cannot say it without your name attached to it, then it would probably be wise just not to say it.

Anonymous said...

@ 8:26

Football is not the only program that brings the school money. Football uses a much higher percentage of the money they garner than other sports do. Equipment, grounds maintenance, water bills all take money that the athletic department is bringing in from various areas.

Additionally, all Career and Tech students bring in more money to the school than any other students. The school is paid 30 percent more per period that a student is in a CTE course rather than a regular course. So those programs that help bring kids into CTE courses are also bringing in large sums of money for the school...so FFA, FCCLA, and Skills USA are bringing in large sums of money as well...especially when there are nearly 300 students in most of those CTE programs....numbers have dwindled some with the 4X4 and not pushing for these courses to be used in the best way they can, but football is certainly not the only place the school is making money.

Add to that fact that the school does not have to spend 100 percent of the money brought in to CTE for CTE...they can actually use 40 percent of it for anything they want....and it is easy to see that others are bringing in money too and receive disproportionate recognition for it....

Anonymous said...

Heck the school gets paid for kids showing up to class. Not the point. When was the last time the gym was full of spectators for a basketball game, volleyball game, debate, or a math/science meet?

Of course there is other revenue generated but people want to gripe about the only spport that fills the stadium on Friday nights even when it is totaly unrelated to the topic.

Anonymous said...

@11:03 AM

Isn't it a sad state of affairs when the only thing that fills a stadium in your town is football. I guess this explains why the academic trophies were thrown out and only 1 athletic trophy....

Thanks for making everyone's point for us...9:20 was replying to 8:26 which did bring up funding for athletics so I think the point was very valid.

Your statement is not true of every school in Texas. My kids go to a school where stadiums are packed for band competitions, livestock shows, school musicals (which was sold out 2 weeks in advance for 5 showings over 3 days), basketball games, and FFA contests...

its amazing what can happen when the people of a town will recognize that ALL students can be successful, push them to be successful, support them when they compete, and show off the fruits of their success with pride and dignity instead of dumping them in the dumpster....

But since football is the only successful program in Bridgeport (ha...not even close to the most successful program there...but the only one recognized for its success)...then that is the only one worthy of displaying its trophies....

Hey Jearene,

Wow, just defending one sister? Ms. Willmon is being slammed with negative comments and I notice that you have not defended her. What's up with that?
