Mass Gathering In Wise County

I saw an Official Notice on the courthouse door about a group seeking a "mass gatherings permit" from the county for some amateur motocross championship. (Sorry, no pic.) First, I had no idea the law required such a thing. Secondly, I had no idea about the "freedom of assembly" clause in the Bill of Rights was actually the "freedom of assembly if the government grants you a permit" clause.

this is a bunch of crap making people get permits for gatherings and all the information asked for is an invasion of privacy. i understand that some of the evnets here in this area cause major traffic problems. the goverment appears to be trying track and keep the citizens from meeting unless it is for the party in charge

Barry,
I like it when you say that you don't know something about the law. It brings a smile to my face when you are humbled.

This permit is required for a mass gathering to allow Police and Ems to prepare for the event. Such as to bring in extra officers or more ambulance crews to handle that size of crowd. This permit is required everywhere, not just in Wise County.

Looks like you have your avenue to the Supreme Court paved.

3:38, you're right. Those 'Free Speech Zones' certainly didn't exist during Bush's reign.

It's getting to be where you can't take a piss without a permit(tax)in Wise County or in the city limits of Decatur. Pisses me off, but I have to get a permit to do it.

And what about this guy who got arrested in Watauga?

Supposedly he was just standing and holding a sign outside the 100-foot limit.

3:54, if I decided to hold a gathering in your living room, you'd probably understand there are limits to what "freedom of assembly" should mean. There are very sound reasons that a community needs to know when assemblies will occur, and to what extent.

This is nothing new.
Local gov't can regulate the place and time of a demonstration/assembly, etc. What they cannot regulate is the content of what you say.

So the same rules apply to all groups wanting to have a demonstration - from MADD to KKK.
