More Government

I've often wondered, but today I learned that 253,740 people "in Dallas-Fort Worth" are government employees. Source. And as a comment on that source pointed out, that "doesn’t count the thousands working for defense and aerospace contractors in the area (Lockheed-Martin, Bell Helicopter, Raytheon, etc…)" We've got a beast on our hands.

There's no end--add teachers, fire department, police....on and on paid by our taxes.

Welcome to the new Democratic world!!!

Ok, 5:18, If you don't like taxes, then quit driving on public roads-Supported by taxes. Don't use municipal water, sewer, electricity and gas- all subsidized by taxes, even though they are private or municipal services. The list goes on. You want government, you just do not want to pay for it. Grow up!

Don't even go there with that teacher SH**. They get screwed at every turn and they are sure not making 250k a year. Yes the Admin people may be but the people in the classroom are far from six figures, and every one that runs for office promises to make that better and guess what....that is the first thing cut. Don't even go there. I have to put up with your little sh**'s every day. What ever happens is NOT their fault. Look at the update this week. Sorry but it is true and I am sick of it.

I am from the government and I am here to help.

Typical liberal weenie slant. All that government spending on defense. I guess they don't spend on any other contractual services, food, medicine, office equipment, vehicles, and all the other things it takes to run a bureaucracy. Defense bad, socialized medicine good.

I for one, support his endeavors to rebuild our infrastructure....it's gotten kind of crumbly lately, and I think the coppers and their pals have gotten their fair share for a while, too. Our WPA built school lasted us well, until it burned down in '95.....it had much more character than our current one does.

Go President Obama, you rock the American people's world! You are doing an outstanding job on your TV interview now! Either we need to pull together as Americans NOW, or let party lines be the downfall of the greatest nation on earth! God Bless the United States of America.

A hundred years from now this will either look like Europe or Africa, but the really amazing society we knew as America is gone forever.

That includes schools, military etc. Got a lot of cities here, includes all those folks, too. And we have quite a few major federal offices here that boosts our numbers, too. Ratio is pretty normal here versus other places, maybe a bit less. 8 to 12 percent of jobs...something like that.

5:47, right. My favorite bit of hypocrisy around here was the whole flameout about the Trans Texas Corridor and how awful it was to even think about taking someone's land to build a highway. Meanwhile, everyone with that opinion drives up and down roads and highways that were built on land that once belonged to someone.

Don't we all work for The Man?

About 6 or 7 years ago the small school where I worked hired a retired business executive to teach 7th grade science. He had been through the alternative certification program, and came in with boundless enthusiasm for his new career.

As he left the building for the last time 4 months later, his comment to me was "I thought they would be eager for the knowledge I could share with them."

For any who begrudge the tax dollars paid to teachers (by the way, we aren't covered by the same insurance plan as government employees), go to a local school and apply to be a substitute for a little while.

I love my job, and I wouldn't trade professions with anyone on this planet, but don't fool yourself into thinking that just anyone can do what I do.

Here's what's going on now. And I am being serious. A whole, whole, whole lot of people with means are converting their assets into cash, on the expectation that soon this whole system is coming down, and prices will fall so low that having the cash in amounts they are capable of squirreling away right now will suffice for years. Not kidding. And when the hated "people with money" take theirs and go home...we will all learn how important to our economy those who were investing and building companies and wealth are...or were. Hate em all you want, but when they are gone, it's a real prob.

Democratic World? The biggest government, biggest nation debt, biggest phony war, courteous of the Republican Conservatives. Get real. At least, somebody is trying. Unlike the Hoover era, that the policy was to ignore, maybe it would just go away. Obammy the problem? Thinks maybe is was Obushie, the problem.

Wow... black helicopter crazies and everyone afraid of big guv... *sigh*

There are 6.1 MILLION people in the DFW metroplex, according to the July 2007 Census Bureau estimate. Doing some rough math, that means there is 4% of our population directly employed in government service.

That is a pretty small percentage of the population. And considering it does include teachers, policemen, firemen, etc... yeah, it is a REALLY small percentage of the population.

I think I will step back away from all the hand-wringing now.

There may be 6.1 million people but there aren't 6.1 million JOBS. The percentage of all jobs that are government jobs is shockingly high.

If calling Obammy is rascist, can the same be said about Obushie?

I have worked for Raytheon and now Lockheed. In no way are they taking anything from the government. The company's are strugling like all in this time.......

This seriously is the first time you have offended me Barry and I check this site many times a day. But hey be a big man and talk trash about people who worked to be where they are in life.

So true about teaching profession and admin. The local morale is LOW!

"it is a REALLY small percentage of the population."

Still too many.

all you folk harpin about the infrastructure, were you not here in 1990 everything is in much better shape now.

10:11pm - There may not be 6.1 million jobs... but there are still 6.1 million people that have to be cared for.

7:11am - No, it really is not. You tell me, how many policeman per 100 citizens is needed? How many firemen? How many teachers? How many judges? etc... etc..

Heck, we couldn't even convince people in the county that the guv should not be running our EMS services. So how many of you that complained about that proposal are now complaining about how many people guv employees?
