Uh, Oh

The Messenger is at it again. Tomorrow's front page, above the fold, will have a photo of the mangled car that was involved in the wreck that killed Candace Richardson and her son. They always catch a lot of grief when they do so. Edit: To the commenter that had the hot opinion, I would have printed it but you've got hold back on the S bombs and F bombs. But it was a good rant.

Of course it is. Do the people in Wise County want the latest news? Or do they want to read Wise Youth Today and just see photos of kids and their parents and read "feel good stories".

Why is the Wise County Update so popular? Why did I read it online for 25 years when I lived in Dallas? Because I wanted to know what was going on in the county that I grew up in.

Nobody likes the very sad and tragic srories but that is the news and we need to be aware of it. How else would we know how to possibly help those affected.

There is a fund now set up through the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo for Stephen, the one survivor of that family in the accident.

You can contact the Decatur High School for details.

Online for 25 years? I don't think so.

kudos to the messenger for keeping its balls after skip nichols left. we hate to hear about this type of news, but we always want to see it. if it saves just one life down the road, then it was worth it for shock value for our kids .... or idiot drivers who illegally pass others on 380.

Pardon me but car wrecks are NOT news.

10:17 Are you the one that we made leave Wise co. for lying so much??

Anonymous said...

wrecks and fatalities are not news? you must be that one person in the country that does not read daily newspapers or watch the 4, 5, 8 or 11 news stations.
but really, it is news. its bad news but news we expect

Visiting Switzerland's alps, the only road signs I saw were reminders that x number of cyclist had died on this road in the last year. Think it may be time to have similar signs on 380 and 287 warning drivers they are entering a death zone (Wise County) and promote defensive driving.

Its always a good thing, until it hits something personal, until its YOUR family tragedy in the paper. There is a difference in reporting on the accident, and interferring in someone's moment of grief and loss. NOONE has that right! I hope your families are fortunate enough to NEVER have THIS kind of picture GRACE the paper!

great coverage of the accident WCM! all the deatils that the big paper never pointed out and a nice story sharing with us how active this family was in the community. i didnt know the family, but i feel like i do now.
what a loss to wise county

8:12 I agree.

They have that on a winding highway in Arkansas. It made us be more careful.

If I was in a tragic accident of some sort I WOULD NOT BE OFFENDED to make front page above the fold. I would hope others would learn from the mistake made and someone elses life would be spared.(from the lesson learned-shock value).

knock on wood

Wise County we MUST do something about 380. How many more people will die before we fix the problem?

Anonymous said...

10:37, you're not the one who stated that 380 was "winding" in a previous post, are you? What needs to be done, make it a full four-lane highway? How about better driver education rather than blaming an inanimate object.

House of R & R said...

10:48 You should know better. There are people in Wise County who don't know any better than to blame inanimate objects. Remember that accident with those kids in the summer? People were blaming the road.

The only way I kept up with the Kennedy assasination as it happened was through the Messenger online.

i just got home with both of our local papers (i live in bridgeport) and it looks like the WCM got a lot closer to the gunman standoff than our hometown paper. this is why we keep our WCM subscription - i can count on roys boys to get down and dirty when things get tough.
good job men!
i saw the WCM boys at the deadly accident as we were caught in the backup of traffic. mr. morgan looks good!

You want to know why they got the coverage. He was behind police baracades in the front yard laying down. Not even the family could get that close. That was too close. But the police let them right through.

wow, did you see that pic of brooke hogan? i love me some of that

Would the commenter referred to in Barry's post edit his/her comment so that Barry can post it? Just use "Sh*t" and "F*ck" where necessary.

I like a good rant.

I'll try to recapture some of the magic....

"Nobody likes the very sad and tragic srories but that is the news and we need to be aware of it"

This is not "news", this is entertainment! How in the world do you call capitalizing on someone elses trauma news?

I'd be willing to bet that while this "story" unfolded, hits on this site went up significantly. Do you really think that it is all these people wondering about traffic? Or the condition of the roads? No, it adds drama into our otherwise mundane lives, it grabs our attention. In other words, it entertains us.

We have a war going on overseas, with THOUSANDS of OUR soldiers dying, and it takes an accident of this magnitude close to home to get us "excited?" Pathetic. News is how our tax money is spent, foreign policy is made, traffic updates, etc. Not people that don't know how to drive killing other people. But hey, taxes aren't exciting. FATALITY accidents are exciting! Please.

Why the fu..er, I mean, HECK, does the Messenger put that sh..er, I mean, crap, on the front page? I believe it is called the Moth to flame theory.

Is it REALLY any of our business? REALLY? What is it that you think makes it "news"? There is a difference between news and entertaiment, and this is pure entertainment. And to capitilize on other people's anguish, suffering, sorrow and heartache by making them repeatedly relive this online and through our little small town gossip dreck is disgusting.

And to the 3rd commenter (you took my original spot, BTW), you say that we hate to hear about this news? Do you REALLY believe that? How do you then explain the increase in web site views, messenger buys and TV ratings when things like this happen? Because we are in a society incapable of entertaining ourselves. God forbid (oops, I can say God, right?:)) we go outside and play with our kids, or take care of our lawns...We might miss another "terribly tragic" accident that we must all know about.

Not quite the same fire as the first time, or as well written, but I think I made my point. That this isn't news, it is outright entertainment.

Do you really think that making 380 a four lane road will solve the problem? No, people will still drive like maniacs no matter how many lanes there are. The police know how bad that road is and they don't patrol it. They need to give it more attention and then maybe I won't be passed on the shoulder at midnight by some crazy lunatic.

MomOfAngels3 said...

Another tidbit, widening the road doesn't always help:

"In the biggest of the minor accidents, six cars collided one mile north of Decatur on southbound U.S 81/287.

According to DPS troopers, a drunk driver caused a chain reaction of fender benders that tied up traffic for almost an hour. " (As reported in WCM)

Most news is bad news... It comes from all over the planet. Hurricanes, tornadoes, recessions, housing market plunging, athletes getting shot or jailed. Don't you all see that in ALL of those stories there are people who are hurting from these "disasters" that hit close to home? It is news..period. We all have tragedies and yes, news is made up of them. I would LOVE to see all media stick to nothing but positive good news events... but that will never happen. It's human nature..and that will not change.

Accidents may not be news to some people and its definately not entertainment to most. But for the people that knew Candace and her 2 sons it was important to see the write up in the Messenger. I waited all morning for it to come and not to see the picture of the mangled car but to know what happened to two wonderful people!

Anonymous said...

You know, nothing should be reported in the news. It all involves people, and those people have relatives and friends. We should just sit in the dark.

Well, that is unless the reports are about people that aren't white. Then its full speed ahead with the reporting.

barry, please post more brooke hogan. i cant stop thinking about her since your last post

Dear 8:17 p.m.

"I'll try to recapture some of the magic".

Magic? Have no idea who you are and really don't want to know. Probably God would not like to be mentioned in your post with the f word and the sh word.

You have a lot of anger inside you. You really need to get it out and get on with your life.

3100 hits on monday? see whyt he WCM covers the bad accidents? i bet those hits were people checking the comments about the fatal on 380 from sunday.
good job roys boys..and barry

It might be wise to learn the facts of the case before jumping to conclusions.

Idiot drivers do illegally pass, but the driver of the SUV, in this case, was in a LEGAL passing zone. Sad that no one thinks about that young man, his injuries, and the guilt he will have to endure on a daily basis. I understand the small town mentality and obvious anger/sadness. What I don't understand is how so many are quick to judge.

The quotes from state troopers in the newspapers have been not only contradicting but unconfirmed. Compassion for ALL victims should be felt. I wouldn't be surprised if the party responsible ended up being the D.O.T.

Regardless, none of the lives touched by this tragedy will ever be the same.

Anonymous said...

Since the 'accident' is still under investigation, do any of us really know any of the facts at all?

Lots of rumor; lots of speculation, but NOTHING is confirmed.

You know, 8:32, you may be right about the passing zone. BUT was the driver of the SUV passing legally or illegally? Just because he was in a passing zone doesn't give him the liberty of passing into oncoming traffic.

Generally a passing zone means a clear view and distance for passing.

And, you know what, I've thought about him a lot. HE may live in guilt, and I'll agree that could be a horrible life, but it beats the alternative the other family has to live with.

I pray for them all!
