Not So Fast My Friend

As I shook my head at this headline from the Dallas Morning News today (how in the heck did that happen so often in Dallas?), I also had to tap the brakes when I read these sentences:

"Mr. Phillips also pleaded guilty to eight charges for sex crimes that police said at the time were committed by the same man who committed the rape . . . . [His new lawyer] said Mr. Phillips simply gave up and pleaded guilty to those charges."

That will make getting out of prison a very, very difficult proposition.

There's a good article in Texas Monthly this month about Craig Watkins and the mess he inherited in Dallas County. I suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg........

Dallas County has always been, and will always be, a MESS. I don't anticipate Craig Watkins will be cleaning it up anytime soon. I mean, look at their school board and commissioners court, before you start thinking you have it bad in Wise County. Those people are CRAAAAAZY.

I was watching an old rerun of CSI, you know the original one in Vegas, and Sarah was using the DNA lab to work on a rape case, and Grissom shows up and scolds her for tying up the lab on a non-homicide case. Now, isn't that rape defendant looking at a potential life sentence just like a murder suspect would be?
There was another episode where Grissom got called out to help some small town police department, and the chief was bemoaning how expensive these evidence collection techniques were for a small department like his. The point is that most police don't investigate these serious crimes like they should. I would hate to be a prosecutor in this age of CSI and nitpicky evidence collection. All people that watch TV must be expecting that kind of evidence in every case. How about that?
