There Was A Democratic Debate Tonight . . .

. . . that nobody watched. But this report got my attention:

To a question on whether English should be the official language in the United States, only former Alaska Sen. Mike Gravel raised his hand in the affirmative. But Obama protested the question itself, calling it "the kind of question that was designed precisely to divide us." He said such questions "do a disservice to the American people."

Baloney. Tell us where you stand.

ENGLISH must be made the official language of the USA! Ridiculous amounts of time and money are wasted on catering to non English speakers. Of course it is easy for illegals to stay here: we pay for their medical, their kids' schooling, AND we don't demand one thing of them...not even to speak the English language. Freedom doesn't mean "freedom at the expense of others" but "freedom to have equal opportunity in this land." Illegals want the opportunity and then the whole shebang handed to them. And you know what? WE HAVE BEEN SUCKERS ENOUGH TO GIVE IT ALL TO THEM AT OUR EXPENSE! WAKE UP AMERICA!

A question designed to divide candidates? At a debate? Yeah, that seems unfair...

Maybe Obama thinks they should just all be nominated.

My compliments to Barry. A fair criticism of the guys on his side of the aisle.

There's hope for you yet.

A black man playing the race card? Now that's original.

Sorry to disappoint you Barry, but some of us did watch the debates. The most impressive was Edwards who ADMITTED he was wrong to vote for the war.

If Clinton gets the nomination and then wins the Presidency, every man in the debate last night will be scrambling for a place in her administration.

Fun to watch.

OFFICIALLY, Barack Hussein Obama had the LEAST favourable results among instant poll takers, John Edwards had the MOST number of favourable results and Joe Biden had the HIGHEST favoured single result among instant poll takers with his "I would end the war in Iraq and immediately move to defuse the possible war in Iran and immediately defuse what's going on on the Korean Peninsula." all in the FIRST 100 days of taking office. NATURALLY he offered NO real plan on how HE would SUCCESSFULLY achieve ANY of his EMPTY promises. Hey! Kerry had NO problem telling the public that he had a plan to end the war in Iraq and would share it with everyone AFTER he was elected. So WHO can blame Joe "Xerox" (remember he was forced to drop out of the 1988 pres. race because he was found to have committed plagiarism causing him to fail a course in law school) Biden for giving that scam a try. From the looks of the numbers democrats MIGHT just be dumb enough to AGAIN fall for it THIS time.

English does indeed NEED to be the OFFICIAL language of the United States but does NOT need to be the ONLY language of the United States. COUNTLESS nations have street signs and issue public documents in SEVERAL languages. However, EVERY United States citizen should be REQUIRED to be able to speak the national language.

Why does the USA need an "official" or single language? I suggest that most countries in the world have multiple languages or distinct dialects and they deal with it adequately. Some mandate dual language ability (Canada) and some like Switzerland have 4 languages.

Sure, having one language would make things easier for me, but it is not an absolute requirement for a successful nation.

I think we should start by mandating that Wise County residents learn both English and logic.

AHEM!
Perhaps you will find THIS information helpful in understanding the PURPOSE of a nation having an OFFICIAL LANGUAGE. As stated in the document Sweden does indeed utilize Swedish as its "de facto" language as does the United States, English.

You're welcome.

I went to Puerto Rico a couple of weeks ago and was shocked to hear all those who lived there speaking Spanish. Don't they know this is America and we speak English?!

The answer is si.

AHEM, Mzknowitall, Your provided link points out that Sweden and the USA "have no official language, although there may be a single de facto main language" (as do Japan and United Kingdom). It even states that Gaelic is the national language of Ireland even tho only 10% of the people speak it. Other countries have an official language but are quite unstable.

So what's your point? Obviously a single "official" language neither makes nor breaks a nation.

Mzchief...great post you are right on the money!

I think this question was a sneaky way to try and probe into a candidates idealogy on race...I can see if a candidate were to answer that English should the official language, then it would be used against them in the immigration debate. This was a trap, if you answer yes on this question then you will have to answer further questions where they cite that a certain percentage of the people in this country do not speak English, so how can you feel it is fair to say English should be the official language! (I know it was a run-on sentence)

There is QUITE a ground swell of support to REQUIRE the United States to conduct ALL official business in both English and Spanish. That would INCLUDE legislative business, judicial and law enforcement as well as private industry. Though I am fluent in a NUMBER of languages it would GREATLY offend/annoy ME to be REQUIRED to conduct business in a language other than English within the United States. Having to conduct business in BOTH English and Spanish would render THOUSANDS of federal and state employees UNEMPLOYABLE. Legislating ENGLISH as the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE of the United States would go a VERY long way to preventing such a calamity.

As for SYMBOLIC GESTURE of Irish Gaelic being designated the "Official Language" of the Republic of Ireland after nearly 600 years of the English FORBIDDING the teaching or use of Gaelic it is stated in

Article 8 of the (Irish) Constitution makes the following affirmation:

1. The Irish language as the national language is the first official language.

2. The English language is recognised as a second official language and is the language in which all official business is to be conducted.

The United Kingdom is CURRENTLY taking under consideration making English the OFFICIAL LANGUAGE of the U.K.

Japan has too much NATIONAL PRIDE to EVER tolerate ANY language other than Japanese as its OFFICIAL LANGUAGE.

To gorilla...
Though Costa Rica is in CENTRAL America it is NOT a part of the United States thus the inhabitants of Costa Rica should NOT be expected to speak English. EVERYONE commenting on this blog has been VERY concise in citing the "United States" as the country NEEDING to make English its OFFICIAL language.

mzchief: I said Puerto Rico, not Costa Rica.

Mzknowitall, Besides not knowing Costa Rica from Puerto Rico, your frightful scenario of using some language other than English for SOME people is greatly overdone. You can attempt to make English the exclusive language if you like but that won't automatically make the non-English speakers learn English. Can't we make a sincere attempt to communicate - not discriminate?

mzchief said...

To gorilla...
Though the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico an UNincorporated territory of the United States BOTH Spanish AND English are the OFFICIAL LANGUAGES of this PRIMARILY Spanish speaking territory.

It has been a little LESS than 100 years, give the United States time.

If you knew ANYTHING about linguistics and nation building you would KNOW that a COMMON language goes quite a long way to uniting people. A COMMON language puts ALL people on EQUAL footing and ENABLES all people the SAME opportunities. People who lobby for KEEPING Spanish speakers speaking Spanish are the ones who are ATTEMPTING to deny Spanish speakers the benefits AVAILABLE to English speakers in an PREDOMINATELY English speaking nation such as the United States. Your thinking is akin to that of the people who made it ILLEGAL to teach blacks and Native Americans to read. Just ANOTHER way to keep brown/black people subservient to whites.

Pull your head out of your "let's not discriminate arse" and help make decisions that will EMPOWER and INCLUDE non-English speakers in the "AMERICAN DREAM" rather than FOREVER relegate them to being maids, gardeners and car wash attendants.

Suck it up and face the FACT that if ANYONE wants to make it BIG in the United States and they do NOT have what it takes to be a "C"rapper or an athlete they had bloody well speak the language of the "Fortune 500."

Obviously I KNOW the difference between Costa Rica and Puerto Rico. However, I am VERY inclined to misread/skim comments on The Blog.

O.K. Enough of the civics and geography lesson already. Let's discuss something truly substantive about the lib's debate such as " did'nt Sen. Edwards haircut look smashing!" I bet he spends more on hair care than Billary.

Wonder what the "Indians" thought about illegal immigration and official languages when they saw white faces getting off boats on our eastern shores way back when? I am a middle aged white guy born in the USA, yet my being here, and yours...is a product of illegal immigration.

So Barry, are you going to completely ignore the Louisiana Democrat that was indicted today in federal court for various charges? I bet if it was a republican it would already have been up on the blog for libs to begin bashing, huh?
BTW, his name is William Jefferson...

Let's see. 85% of Americans agree that English should be the official language. And 99% of the liberal weenie candidates disagree with the American people.

anon @ 7:41 - Let me get this straight, you're bitching because Mzchief takes the time to research the facts she uses in her comments? You have to be one of the home grown Wise County dipshits. Mzchief provides more factually accurate comments in a month than you and your posse of dumbasses have in the history of commenting on the DQLand blog.

I love watching Mzchief beat your ass like a nickle drum every time you rear your numb skull. The steady ass whippings Mzchief dishes out is one of the main reasons I visit this blog.
