Random Monday Morning Thoughts

  • Watched the Hangover II this weekend. Meh. Some movies just can't be the subject of a sequel.
  • I'm not sure why all the flap about the U.S. Olympic team wearing uniforms made in China. That is uniquely American.
  • Wrong way driver death. And if you took 114 through Southlake this morning, you felt the effects of it.
  • Mavs Dancer tryouts.
  • Messenger Letter to the Editor says an innocent man is in the Wise County Jail. There's probably  more than just one.
  • ESPNU is counting down the 25 best college games of 2011 and Baylor is in three of them. And won all three. I've got this weird feeling that this is as good as it gets.
  • Mitt Romney is catching heat for releasing only two years of tax returns. As George Will said, he has made a calculated decision that the damage done from not releasing them is less than what would happen if he did. How rich is that guy?
  • Mrs. LL proclaimed I've officially lost it this weekend when I did a Joel Osteen impression while using the Batman voice.
  • Yesterday I saw a convenience store clerk yell at a customer, "I am not your servant!" I have no idea what started that.
  • The kid who was "carrying" the cross to Washington D.C. has made it.  What are the chances he cheated a little?
  • I'm not sure how it made the news, but a federal disability discrimination lawsuit has been filed by a guy who used to work in Bridgeport.
  • The Family Cat has calmed down. The Neighbor Boys have calmed down.
  • I agree with the President when he says successful people are successful merely because they are smarter or worked harder than anyone else.
  • Female MMA fighter knocks out opponent with first punch. I don't know if I'm jazzed or horrified.
  • I enjoy weekends more than I used to. My limestone edging project is getting close to completion. I had a complete stranger stop yesterday to talk to me about it.
  • This minor league play was ESPN's #1 Play of The Day on Saturday.  Outfielder climbs wall. Glove goes over wall. Outfielder hits ground. Outfielder has ball in his throwing hand. How did that happen?

First I must say well done on the RT girl today! Nice!

Second, any news on the letter to the editor? Is anything in that letter true and if so WTF is going on. This is America. Where is his attorney?

I think the President said they are NOT successful just because of those reasons.
You bias has now evolved to your reading comprehension?

There was another mistaken arrest some time ago. If they don't discover their mistake before you are taken to jail, you are stuck until you post bail and spend money on an attorney...they don't just let you out...stupid DA could do it but hey they gotta make some money on it. I could be though that this man is being held on another charge the girlfriend does not know about. See what you can find out Barry.

Holy crap, BG. You misrepresented not only the words but the gave the complete opposite if what Obama was saying about successful people. His exact quote: "...look, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something -- there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there." The killer was this quote: "If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.

This is the worst part - you're a degreed professional who attended a prestigious university, and you didn't get what he meant. Yet his words are pretty plain. Is it possible that there's an "Obama filter" which always turns his words into things you want to hear?

If Barry Soetoro Obammy can slam Romney for outsourcing, why can't he be slammed for doing the same thing. I don't have a problem with China making our uniforms. But I do have a problem with Ralph Lauren charging the prices for them that he did. Have you seen the prices? 795 dollars for a blazer with his logo on it? Shouldn't he be paying them for advertising?

Mitt Romney- Because nothing says "I believe in America" like a Swiss bank account used to avoid paying taxes.

Anonymous said...

Is that a button on your shirt or are you just glad to see me?

Since most unsuccessful people can be found to have made a lot of bad decisions, it would only stand to reason that successful people avoided those bad decisions.

The rest of us are doing just fine living our average lives and don't care much about either of those groups.

You have bought into BO's class warfare rhetoric hook, line and sinker.

What the hell does that have to do with a traffic stop, not to mention it's just plain illegal!

So you agree that people who are smarter or work harder make more money? If you work 60 hours a week and you went to college to get an education you also believe that the money your earn working long hours should be shared with the woman with three baby daddies. You know that the baby daddies are not working and she is sharing your money with them. I guess they will vote for you when you run for an elected office. That is part of your base of voters who can be counted on. You can also count on voters without ID to vote for you.

The life expectancy of a democracy is 200 years. We are overdue for failure. In 1787 Alexander Tyler wrote "A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship."

LBJ's "Great Society" was the beginning of the end.

To be realistic, trying to say that there is only one way to build a business is crazy. Some are built on nothing but hard work and brains. Some a built with those and daddy's money (or rolodex). Some are built by cheating, and some are built by dumb luck. Some are built with minority set asides and government contracts. Stump speaches are never factually acurate, and most political actions follow the same course.

Just read the article on Story's son. I cannot believe they would even think about having him play football again. If that leg takes another hard hit, then what?

I understand how hard it is to lose out on a Sr year, but heck, the next year he won't have football and things will be much clearer to him then about why he shouldn't have played his Sr year.

I love athletics and I love watching as people come back from injuries to play again, but there are some injuries that should be left to heal! The boy almost lost his leg!!! No, sorry, but he should NOT play.

My two cents!

253 - "If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen." That's an exact quote, and pretty clear. It's also difficult to reconcile that sentiment with the half-hearted lip service he gave to "individual initiative."

What Obama tried to say, in essence, is "Government creates everything" and we are all simply the beneficiaries.

Tell the entrepreneur working 90 hours a week, sometimes going without pay to cover expenses, sacrificing time with his family to make the business work, that he didn't build it.

I'm sure no other person besides Romney has Swiss Bank accounts to shelter their earned money to keep the government from taxing it. He is only taking advantage of legal loopholes. If you don't like it, demand congress change the tax laws.

2:53 How biased are you?

Either watch it again, or read Wordkyle's post at 9:01am. You misqoute the President when you say he says "we succeed because of our individual initiative and...". Perhaps you WISH he had said that. Perhaps that's why you would direct our attention away from that part of the speech. He said nothing of the kind. In his several remarks, he gives no credit to the successful or the business owner. In fact, regarding the business owner, he says "If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen." This is a real thing to discuss, because he is justifying and rationalizing moving further away from capitalism, individual ownership and responsibility, toward socialism, govt. ownership and no personal responibility. His point is that successful people don't earn their success, that they are just lucky, and that that's not fair. That success is not the result of good plans, hard work, and delayed gratification. He gives no reason for a lack of success, but I suppose he implies it's because the unsuccessful have had no help (eg. no good teachers, parents, infrastructure, government, researchers, technology, etc.) Yea, I can see why if he's your guy, you would want to change the subject to more "real things". In fact, dollars to dimes says you don't consider yourself successful, nor do you own your business, and you do consider that someone else's fault because you had no help.

Wordkyle,
Get your head out of the a$$ of fox news and read Obama's entire speech. Obama is saying that you received help from other people, whether it was teachers of the government that built the roads so a business can transport merchandise. You're such an idiot...probably picks and chooses scripture from the Bible to fit you own needs.

Well, I have a business. Small one. Just me and my son. I worked long hours in my youth to buy tools, instead of sitting on my butt evenings and watching TV. Yes, I use roads and such. I paid for them, just like all of us did. Would you like to compete with me? Go ahead. Make the sacrifices to buy all the same tools, jump on our roads and get to it. What you can't have is part of mine if you chose to smoke, drink, party and watch TV instead of investing in tools.

523 - You likely watch more Fox News than I do. As for something "of the government" -- where does government get the money to do anything? From taxpayers who earn their money from businesses that someone built, shareholders who profited from those businesses, or from those businesses themselves. Here's an illustration of what Obama meant.

Anonymous said...

2:53 I don't need to watch it again or read Wordy's slanted interpretation. But, clearly you need another listen. Your, "He said nothing of the kind" reference to his discussion of individual initiative means that you either didn't listen or that you are so biased you refused to hear. Listen again.

If I'm grading your response as a teacher, you get an F because you were not able to correctly summarize the main point of the speech. Thereafter, you just made stuff up. There is nothing there about moving away from capitalism. Nothing about government ownership. He never intimates that people are only successful because of "luck". He never says success doesn't come from work. That is all from your biased imagination. It's fine to disagree with the man, but I don't see the need to fabricate things.

Let me help you out, in summary, he says that nobody got successful completely on their own. Every successful person had help, whether it be parent, teacher, mentor, financier, etc. and yes, some of that help was even governmental (roads, internet, research, GI Bill, etc.).

IMO success is when hard work meets opportunity. Obama is talking about the opportunity part. If you haven't known anyone that worked hard and yet still didn't find much success, you need to meet some more people.

Apparently, you felt threatened so you decided to attack my personal success. Suffice it to say, you are wrong there as well. However, I'll be honest and say that I had great parents, a fantastic education, and caught a couple of breaks along the way. BTW, I've never read a biography of a successful person that said, "I did it all completely on my own."

Wordy - Your position that his main point is that "Government creates everything" earns you an F as well. But, I know that you regularly make posts like that to purposely distort the truth. I don't excuse it, I just expect it from you. The next time you post something without your preconceived (or regurgitated) spin will be the first time.

752 - "If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen." Any further mention of "individual initiative" is negated by that statement. So what is the message?

"Somebody invested in roads and bridges." The implication is that this was the government. However, "the government" does not produce a single nickel. All wealth is created by private business. Any "investment" by government -- whether roads & bridges or the internet -- is made with revenue produced by private business. Without that revenue, government can "provide" nothing. So what is Obama's message? Moving toward "the government provides," wouldn't you think?

As for your definition of "success" as when hard work meets opportunity, you get an F yourself. Simplistic, lazy, and equates opportunity with luck. A more complete and accurate definition was made by John C. Calhoun more than 150 years ago:

"Now, as individuals differ greatly from each other, in intelligence, sagacity, energy, perseverance, skill, habit of industry and economy, physical power, position and opportunity — the necessary effect of leaving all free to exert themselves to better their condition, must be a corresponding inequality between those who may possess these qualities and advantages in a high degree, and those who may be deficient in them."
