Dallas ISD Teachers Might Call In Sick To Protest

The school board voted to have teachers add 45 minutes to their work day without a salary increase. None to happy, they began to organize a protest to call in sick. Kind of like acting like a union when you're not a union.

But this lead organizer appeared on TV in a silhouette because he feared retaliation from district officials. However, his voice was not altered at all. Call me crazy, but I think the chances of him being identified are about 100%. Can't you identify anyone you come in contact with on a regular basis by voice? The silhouette picture is just bonus information.

There is a better way to protest. Every day a child misses school he/she misses an opportunity to learn.

Bridgeport added 45 minutes to teacher's day without board approval. This way teachers have to do tutorials without the district paying them. When teachers questioned this they were told they should be glad they still have a job.

What the hell was that big boom?

What a crime!! Expecting someone to work 7 hours for 8 hours pay. There should be a law.

This isn't the way to get the attention of the board. He'll get it all right, but not the way he wants.
I am a teacher. I do this because I love education and kids. The hours are better than most workers, and I get some weeks off in the summer and at Christmas. I went into this profession with my eyes open: I knew the pay isn't good. It never has been and it probably never will be. But the is what I wanted to do. As a mother, the hours are perfect.
If this man wants to find a job with better hours, let him quit and see what the "real world" hours are. He might be very surprised.
I hate that he represents teachers. He's giving us a black eye. But more importantly, he's setting a bad example for the kids.
Unions hurt us. I know he's not in a union, but this is that type of thinking.

Bland runs the board and Bridgeport ISD has been in a downward spiral since he got here. I'm not a teacher, I'm a parent. Our kids and our faculty deserve better.
Just my opinion, but I believe it is shared by many!

What makes you think it is not a union?
" If it walks like..........." You know the quote.

2:17 Very nice post. I agree with you 100%!!

I bet the coaches at DISD will never have to call in sick.
If I was a teacher at DISD i would call in sick every friday untill football season was over.

2:17 is ignorant. Even the superintendent was quoted in The Messenger as saying that we now work 10-12 hour days, 6 days a week. We spend most of our summer in workshops and doing professional development to keep our certifications current and justifying all of the cheifs summertime hours at central admin. Duh people! At least read the newspaper and keep up on current events before you start posting stupid comments. Everyone knows that district officials are taking advantage of us. We are getting tired of having to choose between our families and our career. Something has to give soon!

On another note, ask the superintendent how his meeting with the high school teachers went. Better yet, ask one of us.

The only union at DISD is the credit union.

2:17 if you are a Teacher and hate Unions then you are an idiot and need to go back to school yourself! The Labor Movement brought us into the middle class ( Teachers Included) , got most Americans weekends off, and provided us child labor laws, safety (triangle shirt factory) , holidays, overtime, and retirements. Most Union folks earn a decent wage and spend it in their Community. Alliance are is a perfect example of this. You dont see decatur wal mart workers living in luxury. they are barely making it. My area has benefitted from these good paying skilled jobs such as the rail, Aviation, and Trucking industry (UPS) and much growth and sales tax came about from this. If you are truly a Teacher then you need to resign because you are a disgrace to those of us that fight in Austin for your rights. You should join the AFT and get involved.

When they go after 2:17's pension and 401k retirement, only then will this person wise up.

Maybe Bland needs to answer why he is hiring a new receptionist when teachers had to absorb the positions vacated in their schools. How many people does it take to run central office anyway?

10:58, He needs to hire someone else to help him cover up all his screw ups at that office. He is a joke.If bland doesn't get what he wants from the board,he throws a fit like a baby.I know I have seen it first hand. Then those spineless _ss holes on THE SCHOOL BOARD give in to him.He walks away smiling.

In my years, I have observed this: doctors are the worst patients; cops are the biggest criminals; nurses are the biggest hypochondriacs; preachers are the worst sinners; and teachers are the most childish....etc, etc.

I hope my kids have a teacher like 2:17--one who actually enjoys his/her job and doesn't sit around crying wah, wah all the time.
Get out of it if you don't like it.
And who doesn't think unions are past their prime?

Ok, so what is to prevent the admin/board from coming back next meeting and demanding all teachers work an extra 2 hours each day, or 4 hours? There is no protection from that. Contracts should state working hours for the working day, period. Teachers have always been screwed over, it is just that now, admins/boards are realizing just how much they can bully teachers and there is not one thing they can do about it. I'm all for the DISD sickout! Should have one every week until that ridiculous policy is reversed!

The ones that still have a retirement, that's who!

8:13, does the Kool-Aide ever choke you when it goes down?

I'm 8:13. I am not naive, but I do want my kids to be taught be someone who enjoys the job and not someone who is there to collect a small paycheck. Then when they get a small paycheck they gripe. Don't get into education if you don't like the pay. It's very simple. Plus there are lots of people who would like that job.
