The Messenger has this video of the school board listening to a few residents regarding the potential termination of Coach Pete Hart. (Although you can't hear a word.)
The Board's decision (which looks like it was a done deal way before the meeting) occurs at around the 3:00 minute mark. And the one over excited clapper, after an extended pause, is kind of funny.

want to know how long it will take for these few parents to get rid of the next coach.... They do not like it when their kids get yelled at or when the run.. They think their kids are the best and should not set the bench...Should not get yelled at..Wake up parents that is coaching suck it up and let the coaches coach stop whining if they lose.. Cause they will eventually win if you stay out of the way it is a team effort and without the coaches teaching them to play as a team instead of ball hogging the ball and then you telling them the coaches suck if they do not play.. It will never change.. So I hope to god you do not cry like babies about the other coaches and make them leave too. And I am very happy you do not have girls that play... Because we have awesome coaches and a group of girls that want to win...And love the sports..Teach your kids to love the sport and suck it up if they set the bench work at it.. And everyone can be winners. As for as chico being looked at like idiots... That has been here long before coach hart came.... Wake up smell the coffee and stop bitching......

You know, it is kind of hard to win football games when you don't have many players. I think at one point this last season they had 13 on varsity. The coach only works with what he has. I believe that he goes on and helps another school win big.
9:21, Coaches should not yell at kids. If they don't know how to maintain displine without yelling, then they are not good leaders and should be fired for not being able to do their job. Too many coaches do yell at the kids and that is wrong. Would you want someone yelling at you all the time like a madman. I don't think so.

10:09 i did have a coach yell and we went to state!!! the coaches do not yell all the time but if they get on to a kid in chico and set them on the bench the parents raise all kinds of crap.. If any kid is not playing up to their potential they deserve to set the bench... And that is when the parents raise all kinds of crap when their kids get in trouble.. Dont set there and say you didnt get yelled at if you played sports cause you would be lieing...and they yell when the kid is not playing how they should They are not mistreating them that are getting their point across. if you pay attention they yell when that happens not just to hear themselves....

after all how can you coach kids whose parents are ignorant he is not the one of many athletes who failed a drug test or humped a fellow female student its not like he has alot of talent
Can we all just acknowledge a few simple points so that we can move on?
1. the kids liked Coach Hart
2. Some parents liked Hart - others did not
3. Kids with no talent or who don't give 110% have to "set" the bench
4. for some reason, the board decided it would be better to hand Hart $75,000 than to let him finish his contract
5. Hart will land on his feet at some other school and do well because he will have better talent at his disposal

7. around here, coaching/teaching/admin/ISD matters go on waaaaaaay longer than anybody not involved wants to hear about

I don't know Coach Hart.... don't know anything about Chico athletics, but you don't have a clue about football if you think you don't have to yell to coach.
Football is an intense game, and not played with a passive leader. The intensity to be successful includes yelling at players at times. There certainly is a right way to motivate through yelling, but don't think that you can win without raising your voice and yelling. A player has to do what a coach asks. Sometimes in order for that player to "get the point", you have to yell.
Go watch a playoff game this Friday night...anywhere...and find a team that doesn't have a coach yelling at the players at some point. You won't.

I'd bet anything if you would filter out the Bport people out of here it would show you how skewed the views of his supporters are. The reason kids liked him was because he was their friend instead of their coach. The comment about kids liking him is why he needed to go and why adults make decisions. Did yall catch that vote? 6-0 things are already headed in the right direction for Chico. Winning record right there.... Way to go Avants and North!!!
What the guy clapping should realize is that Coach Hart has dealt with a "no talent" town for years now. MOney is no object to the Hart family. He wanted to stay close to B-Port. Great players make Great coaches. Coach Hart was coaching horse manure not horses....or the clappers son. The next coach who they hire will be a young guy who will use Chico as a first "head-Job" situation. He will coach the puss there for a couple of years and then move on with a 1-19 record.

This stuff is crazy,it's not just about football, it's about a whole athletic program that has been slowly spiraling downward the last few years.Something had to change, and sadly it came down to the coach. It's easy to sit and point out what is wrong with the situation, but how easy is it to stand together as a community and fix the problem. Education is the important part of school,how about focusing on that.
did anybody go to the basdetball games tuesday did not see so many of you pete hart haters there are other sports besides football and my boys are big football players in chico chico boys have no pride they do not care if they win or lose this is not a new thing for chico i remember when my cousins were playing in the late seventees and eightys they were not winning then but lord the basketball team could really be great this year and it would be nice to see chico have some pride in thier baseball program oh thats right there is barely a baseball program its not all coach hart these kids just do not know how to win

Someone needs to bring PRIDE back to Chico,wether it be a new coach or the staff remaining. We didn't have winning seasons in the 80's but we had School Pride. The community needs to stand together and bring some pride back to the school as a whole, not just the athletic program.

This is Lincoln McNabb and I would be more than happy to talk about sports with Farrel Avants. For those of you who don't know me, I am a Chico Football player, and i can speak for the whole team in saying that we do in fact have pride. Yes, there are the few rotten eggs that spoil the bunch, but every team has those members. Chico has had a piss poor attitude for several years now, and Coach Hart was the individual who was responsible for starting to turn things around. People need to open their eyes and look around them, Chico is changing. It may not be on the football field, but in every single other aspect of daily life; whether it be basketball, track, powerlifting, or in the classroom.
Listen up Jim! I am a kid, I am a Chico kid, I am 18 years old, so that means I'm old enough to die for my country....you have a heck of alot of nerve telling us that adults need to make our decisions.
With all the drugs and things out there that kids today are exposed to you better pray your kid gets lucky enough to have a coach that truly cares about them and that they respect!
Respect is earned...it doesn't come with age.
Coach Hart may have made some people mad in Chico, but most of us that really know the situation have nothing but respect for him!

First of all people are so stupid. It absolutely amazes. I am so glad I dont have kids going to Chico. I cant believe that a school board stood up there and let people treat a good man like this. some of the people complaining dont even have kids of athletic age. Thes kids obviously thought alot of Coach hart and that should say alot. When did winning a game begin to play a more important role than education and morals and life lessons. These parents need to face the fact that the athletic ability was not there and that was not his fault. i personally think it says alot about Coach Hart for stickin it out all these years and putting up with all these Stupid Parents. It dosnt matter who they bring in to coach there you can only do so much.. And as far as people laughing about Chico Football it goes alot further than football. For adults to sit up and try to ruin someones reputation and integrity really teaches your kids alot.. I would be embarrassed by all of this if I were the ones in charge.Coach Hart is alot better off not being there anymore. I wish him all the luck in the world.

Lincoln you're exactly right. Two years ago we finished tied for fourth in district in baseball, our girls went to the playoffs last year in softball, and barely missed them in volleyball. I can understand possibly wanting a new football coach but Coach Hart was a pretty good A.D. This problem could have been easily resolved by firing some of the sorry excuses we have for position coaches (football) and keeping coach Hart as Athletic Director.
P.S. The clapping was a bit over the edge and extremley disrespectful. And I will be more than glad to discuss any of that with you

Wow, to those of you who seem big enough to mouth kids, congratulations. You all are verrry mature. It seems pretty easy to sit there and talk trash about a great man and attempt to destroy what is left of his carreer when you dont even know the first thing about coaching. Especially coaching in a town like Chico where there are parents like Avants, or people that have no children in the district and just need a reason to complain.
If all the time and energy that some people spend trying to strip Coach Hart of his job, reputation, and integrity was spent actually supporting the team that they are now dragging through the mud, things could be drastically different.
And lastly, being the ignorant immature kid that I am, I have a question; how is it that the school board can sit there in front of a crowd clearly in support of keeping coach Hart (except the couple low down ignorant and rude individuals) and vote the way that they did? After all, dont they sit in elected positions? Shouldn't people who are elected to an office vote how the people who elected them want? Or is that just six more individuals who are on a power trip and really dont care for the kids?

i wish all children could have the opportunity to have at least one person in thier life like coach hart. i thought that living in a small town meant small town values. but as everyone can see and read chico has real big town problems. coach hart could not have done much different. these boys have dealt the coach more heartache in the last two years than most people could take. I just wish that people would not dwell on football so much there are other sports that chico could be really good at. coach hart will be missed in the halls making sure everyone is alright. lets hope that chico will hire some talented teachers and make sure that our children get an education first and sports second. last time i looked i think in 2008 chico had 6 or 8 dropouts now thats a shame not a football game. too bad chico is not so passionate about the other sports they could really be good

But seriously, it sounds like Coach Hart made a difference and built some character into some of those children's lives. And in the end, isn't that what matters?
Since the deal was done prior to the school board meeting which by law is an open meeting, either the board violated the open meetings act or the superintendent over stepped his authority by entering into an agreement with Coach Hart. The first is what happened. They board had already gotten their heads together to decide and did not give the public an opportunity to be heard. It was over before the meeting.
Not following the law is a very bad example to our young people and an insult to the process of listening to the kids and public opinion. In this case, the majority of public opinion was in favor of Coach Hart and they knew it.
That reminds me of all those elected officials we sent to Washington. Not listening and throwing away our tax dollars.
As a taxpayer who coughs up about $200 per month for school taxes, I'm curious how much school taxes these guys pay or if they get a break on their taxes since they had no problem paying out money instead of letting the employee finish out his contract. It makes one think they don't pay much in school taxes.

for the person who keeps reffering to the 6-0 vote wise up dummy all of these arrangements for the resignation and the money were already worked out the meeting was just to make it official the only reason you had a 6-0 vote was because both sides agreed to the terms
do you really think he would leave without getting paid for 1 year of his contract if they would have fired him they would have to re-assign him for the term of his contract at the same pay or pay him off so that is the reason you got the 6-0 vote now let it lie
I know coach Hart and he is an amazing man, and cares so much! ... and needless to say Chico has always drawn the short straw when it comes to talented kids willing to work hard.

My Grand-dad might be rolling over in his grave right now.

Here are my thoughts! Chico ISD School Board should hire Mr. Avants for the AD position. Our School Board and Mr. Jones should learn the law before firing a coach/teacher with 20 months left on a contract, might I add a contract that was just extended. Then ask him to agree to 11 months of pay, with insurance??? prior to the School Board Meeting...(Coach Hart should have never agreed to that and made our wonderful school board pay him the total of 20 months) What happened to winning is not everything. And you parents who put blame on other parents, teachers, coaches,& other students for your childs failure and mistakes will one day have big problems. You need to teach your kids - mistakes are made and you will learn and grow from them. So to the students/athletes who are sad to see a great role model, friend, great coach be FIRED due to a handful of inconsiderate assholes, I am sorry! I hope Coach Hart becomes a coach for a school that plays Chico (or Avants Team) and totally dominates! I would CLAP, CLAP, or did I say CLAP! And Mr. Avants I would not be calling out people or insiting people come see you if they have something to say - to many students/athletes/parents respect Coach Hart and I do not know if your HEART can handle that!!!

You can't make talent where none exists. Ending a coaches contract mid-year is a bit excessive. Why not just let him finish out the year? Or at least the semester? Why make a big show out of it?
So are they going to hire within or go out and get somebody else? When will the new A.D. start,after Xmas or at the end of the year?
I understand ur point on this blog but it is America so freedom of speech is part of our rights. As for the kids reading this well.... they have already been subjected to alot since the sex story broke on the local tv news stations not that long ago. I am sure most of the kids are tough enough to handle this blog.

Wow this is really rediculous...all that has happened in the last year, why should everyone be worried about the football stats and our athletic director? You should really take into consideration that one person cannot make the kids win, it has to be in their hearts and they have to want it and strive for it...instead of dissing Coach Hart and putting him down(since most of you think he is obviously a bad coach when maybe you should take a step into our kids shoes and see what they have learned from him) you should be thinking about how there are much worse problems at our school like how the high school principal is having an affair with the administrative assistant at the school, not to mention she is also the mother of one of the girls' who was involved in the huge freshman scandal last year...maybe that's why those girls were protected and did not get in trouble. Hmmm.. makes you wonder? Wouldn't it be great if Chico school district did something about THAT instead of worrying about sports and winning so much when we have problems and SECRETS like that going on....?
Ok here it is...shame on all of you! My husband and I have been Chico residents for 3 years now and I have to say that I am really ashamed of some of you fellow Chico residers...I don't know anything about the football program and really don't give a crap. But what I do care about is when I hear people "diss" my chidren. How dare any of you speak about any child that way!! I am just appalled! To say that our children have no heart, no pride, no talent. I really truelly hope those of you who talk that way have no children. My seven children KNOW on a daily basis that I am proud of them and that they will always have my encouragement to help them pave their way no matter which direction they choose to go (even if its not precious football!) Oh, and something else...are ya'll as concerned about our teachers as you seem to be about football and this coach?? And lastly and most importantly...if you are as concerned as you would like us to believe as we read your blogs...then instead of complaining and whinning why don't you show your children the way to handle situations and get up off of the blog and do something about it! And while you are at it, show some spirit and pride for Chico, and not just for football. Get off the blog and show me how a REAL small town community is supposed to be like...
