Random Friday Morning Thoughts

  • Maybe I'm a tad bit sensitive since I'm in the criminal defense business, but I get a bit irked when people refer to Michael Jackson as a "child molester" when he was never found guilty of such a thing. And the acquittal wasn't an O.J. Simpson kind of verdict, the allegations were suspicious at best.
  • Maybe it's just because I have compassion for the tormented soul.
  • And, admit it, when you saw the clips of him dancing on the news last night, you had to stop down and watch, didn't you?
  • And Jackson was a worldwide phenomenon.
  • Horrible admission: As a kid, I woke up early at a backyard camp out in my neighborhood so that I could run home and catch the Jackson 5 cartoon that came on at 8:30 a.m.
  • Who would have ever bet that Liz Taylor (Jackson's good friend) would survive longer than him?
  • It was around 1981 when I went and saw "The Jacksons" at Reunion Arena -- but it was Michael who the show was about. This was after "Off The Wall" but before "Thriller." And it was great.
  • I took a girl to the concert who was a nut with an overprotective father. I have no idea what her name was.
  • Debated on The Fan (105.3 FM) yesterday: Will you remember where you were when you heard the news of Jackson's death? I think I will. (I was with my mom after fishing when I heard the news of Elvis' death. I was driving home from a Denton golf driving range when I heard the news of Princess Di's crash.)
  • And TMZ was the first to report Jackson's death. That is not an insignificant fact in this era of "new media."
  • Changing gears, did I hear correctly last night that Farrah was only on "Charlie's Angels" for one season, and only did sporadic guest appearances after that?
  • We will be hard pressed to ever have a bigger Double Celebrity Death Day than yesterday.
  • I feel feel like the Chinese guy in front of the tank in my DWI trial that is going on. Two prosecutors on the other side, they've got an intern helping out, and the DA will occasionally stick his head in to offer advice.
  • The jury learned yesterday that my guy had a breath test result, according to the government sanctioned machine, of .118 and .119. The legal limit is .08 I obviously don't believe it's accurate. (We should have a verdict this morning.)
  • I've learned the big soccer tournament going on is the FIFA Confederations Cup being played in South Africa. If you stumble across it on ESPN, you will immediately be annoyed by a mind numbing loud buzzing in the background. The sound? Thousands of fans blowing into their own personal vuvuzela.
  • Being in line for American Idol at Cowboys' Stadium = Beating.

Since Michael Jackson was made of 99% plastic they have decided to melt him down into Lego Blocks!

That way the kids can play with him for a change!

i think its a sad thing, that MJ had such an influence on the culture and the world.

You get a "not guilty" for a guy that blows .118 and .119 then you are 'Da MAN! I'll be contacting you for all of my lawyerin' needs.(Won't be holding my breath on this verdict though).

Side question - Is there ever a time you should consent and blow into the breathalyzer? I don't see how that would ever be to your advantage.

Barry, as a criminal attorney, your sensitivity is understandable about Jackson never been found guilty of messing with a child.

No, we don't know, but I can assure you I wouldn't have let him around any child of mine.

And considering the massive amount of sex offenders in our country, a bunch of these folks have been found guilty of a crime that can ruin a child's life forever.

Some of us out here are sensitive about protecting our children from these sex addicts.

Frankly, I'm glad a bunch of them are locked up and hope they stay locked up and I'm grateful for the lawyers that helped put them away from other children.

Jackson either settled with his accuser because he was confident that he would win but it would cost more to defend than he was paying out OR he was buying his way out of trouble.

Either way, it didn't look good for him. Tormented soul or not, he was a strange man.

I'm just sayin' and it is only my opinion.

Fundamental American ideal: you are innocent until proven guilty.
Enough said.

Fundamental observation: he was a tortured soul to do to his body what he did.........so unhappy with how God made him.

Think of the number of now unemployed people because of his death.

Genius truly is a shooting star kind of thing........consumed very quickly

Did you have those same compassion's while you were the DA for 8 years?

Liked him early, but once he began morphing into an alien being, I lost all regard for the man. Then the allegations with kids...weird at best, and probably where there's smoke there's fire. Glad he's dead.

I don't think M. Jackson or Bill Clinton either one would be good for baby sitters.

These are comments are MORE disturbing than the issues you are even blogging about. I don't know how you can be soooo cold and hateful. Yall need to buck up and pay attention to your own lives and see how much improvement you can stand...Rest in peace Michael Jackson...These rednecks are a dime a dozen...The majority of the world is grieving for you and your family...

I was listening to KRLD on the drive home. A CBS reporter did a ‘breaking news’ segment where he mentioned that MJ was taken to the hospital & might have died. The CBS anchor mentioned (in a condescending tone) that the death report was only coming from TMZ. That is when the reporter confessed that TMZ had ‘remarkably accurate sources’. You could tell that neither of these reporters were pleased to admit that.

8:27....you are exactly right and I agree about molesters. However there are those that lie. To get money! To get out of trouble! To be vindictive! For fame! For whatever reasons. There in lies the problem and one wrong accusation can ruin an entire life and make it extremely difficult for those that were genuinely abused. Sad, sad state of how people really are!

I will remember MJ for being the soundtrack of my youth. He did get weird near the end of his life but I was still shocked to hear the news of his passing. I will remember where I was when I heard the news of his passing.

We saw MJ at TX stadium on the Victory tour. He was great. Man he could dance. We had great seat; we caught his t shirt,it was a good time.. How can you be glad someone's dead?

Anonymous said...

MJ's father took his childhood away in exchange for a singing career. He spent his entire adult life trying desperately live that childhood he never had.

Guilty of child molestation or not, he was simply a product of his upbringing.

when my wife came home with the thriller album in the 80's i threw it in the trash. even then i knew he was a perv. from just a gut feeling. im not a prude or fanatic, i love rock. but i put him with ozzy. you can see it in theyre eyes.

i'm curious. why does no one here question what kind of parent would let their kid go stay with a 40 year old man??? the only people over 40 i ever got to stay with as a child were my grandparents. ironically, both of my grandfathers had a history of child molestation; never convicted or even tried, though. mj was acquitted. now he's gone. the issue is moot. leave him alone already.

Isn't it odd that Farrah and MJ both got weird as they went along? Anna Nicole was another one.

I think it might say more about US, than it does about them.

Autopsy results might turn out to be interesting concerning MJ's death. Ya Think?

I'm with you Barry. When I first heard the news I was laughing and passing on the tasteless jokes that inevitably arose. This morning I am rethinking the jokes.
I wouldn't have let my child within any distance of him, but he was acquitted of the charges, and you have to wonder if the allegations were made to extort money. His downfall may have been his intentional perpetuation of an oddball image. He is proof that money can't buy happiness.

I think it's pretty heartless to say you're glad he died.

What do K-Mart and Michael Jackson have in common?

They both have little boys pants - half off.

Don't really care what you think. I wish alot of people were dead, or at least don't shed any tears when they die. You folks who get worked up everytime someone dies wear me out! One less pervert in the world...woe is me.

Hey...did y'all hear that Micael Jackson died? ...oh, and the utility bill still needs to be paid today!

Actually, I heard about MJ's death right here on this blog. Had to go then to the MSN page to verify. Was very shocked.

He was a strange person, but I believe his "upbringing" helped make him that way. He was a star way too young in his life.

Still at 50, he was too young to die. I think he had a very sad life.

RIP, Farrah and Michael.

What bothers me the most about these deaths of late is that they are "my" generation! I remember my youth, and thinking life goes on forever. Death was a word, not something I needed to be bothered with. Now, Death seems to be creeping its way into my life with the death of family members and friends, as well as the deaths of these "stars" who I grew up with.

Life isn't long on this earth - Live it, and be happy! Leave people alone that don't help to keep a smile on your face.

both his life and the kids at his sleepovers are proof that some "dads" are willing to pimp for theyre kids.

they werent cheap but they could be had.

Many "artists", be it music, actors, painters etc. are just odd, quirky, weird, or what ever word you want to insert to the eyes of those of us who are not of the arts. The man was raised in a life none of us will ever really grasp, and in turn, had a very troubled, and shall we say, broken mind. Not sure anyone could have handled his life in a matter society would call normal. The most well knownb pewrson in the world he has been called. Can you even imagine that? Being a person that would be recognised anywhere they went. ANYWHERE! Most who read this would never feel pity for someone like him, but money and fame does not buy happieness. I hope he is at peace now. Thoughts and prayers to his family and loved ones.

9:59 You must be wonderful to live with!! (not) You are as bad as anyone else if you control everything your wife buys and listens to! She has to agree with you on everything???? I feel for her! She's undoubtedly has had a wonderful life! (sarcasm)!!

It's nice to see that the DA's office will actually take a DUI to trial. We have too many DUI drivers that are still driving around. If they can afford a Barry to represt them they are fortunate. I'm in favor of stiffer punishments for them.

.118 breath test...NOT GUILTY, in the opinion of 6 jurors...UNBELIEVABLE...I guess it's OKAY to come to Wise County and BE INTOXICATED and drive. This ought to make every Wise County citizen FURIOUS. What more can our County Attorney do? Obviously, it's going to take someone, or several someones, to get killed at the hands of someone who drank too much and thought they were okay to get behind the wheel. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME, on those 6 jurors. Maybe we should just get RID of the intoxilyzer and make EVERYONE that is arrested for suspicion of DWI submit to a blood test...hard to argue with THAT result. God forbid anyone in this county or any other county for that matter, should ever find out what it is like to have a loved one killed so senselessly by a DRUNK driver...but Wise County, I am now convinced THAT is what will convince these juries to convict someone for DWI...damn I'm so mad!

Barry, you are right about Liz Taylor. I really thought she would not have lasted this long. Do you remember when she was on Death's Doorstep twenty years ago, yet recovered? And didn't she have to undergo a tracheotomy when she was in her twenties? Tough old bird.

In regards to some of the comments above, I may sound like a Pollyanna, but people in glass houses.......

As for the 11:16 comment, you might as well face it. Once we hit 50, the folks around us start to drop dead. Fact o' life. Better start the bucket list now, never know how long you got.

Loved his music and appreciated his tremendous talent. Didn't like his change physically over the years. True, he was never found guilty, but he did admit to sleeping with young boys. That is weird. Whether something happened or not, that is weird.

The Intoxilyzer 5000 is, by no measure, a perfect instrument. I most certainly would not want my fate to depend on the accuracy of the Intoxilyzer and the human error, inherent in all of use, of the person administering the test. If I am ever required to be the test subject of the Intoxilyzer 5000 you can bet the farm that I will request a blood test. Please note, I have NEVER operated a motor vehicle, not even a golf cart, after having consumed alcohol.

The outcome of the Intoxilyzer 5000 can be influenced by countless circumstances ranging from how the test subject breathes, chemicals in the test subject's clothing, diabetic related ketosis in the test subject and/or the temperature of the test subject's breath.

Go to hell, uh. nevermind, I guess you been there, done that.

Good comments, dude.

Funny how satan has a better sense of humour than god, and at least as concerns tornados, god seems more cruel.

One of life's little idiosyncrosies

And yea, I might have misspelled a couple words there. Get over it.
