Thinking Of The Fall

In a story today about high school athletic officials and how much they are paid, this sentence jumped out at me: "Texas is one of the few states that pays officials based on a percentage of gate receipts . . . . "

Is that true?

How much does a football referee/official make during a Decatur game? A Chico game? An Alvord game? Let me hear from ya.

It would also depend on how much the coaches pay them under the table.... :0

Yes, refs are given a base pay, mileage, and a percent of the gate.

That is why you'll see less experienced refs at games of smaller schools. Usually, if it is a rivalry game, a more experienced ref may show, not necessarily because of the importance of the game, but because of the $$.

There is also very little accountability for refs at Texas UIL events. Not only can they make calls that impact students, but they are almost unquestioned if they decide they want to "turn a coach in" to the UIL.

The only recourse a coach or school has against a poor referree is "scratching" him or her from future games. It is really hard to keep a bad ref off of the court.

Paying all referees more might be a good idea IF
-It leads to having more referees to choose from
-It is combined with some sort of yearly tesing or certification. They ought to have to prove that they know the rules of the game before they get on the field/court.

Yes officials are paid mileage but very few base the pay off of the gate. The average pay for a wise county school is 30.00 dollars for sud-varsity( 7th,8th,9th & jv) and 80.00 dollars for varsity.
Think about that next time you are at a game screaming at the officials.

I will think about that the next time I am screaming at the officials...I will think, I better give them their moneys worth and scream louder and longer!

Don't think they get gate percentages. Refs do not impact attendance. In most districts, the athletic department keeps the gate, even though there are hundreds (and at bigger schools it's over a thousand) of parents whose sole reason for paying $5 to $10 bucks a pop is to watch their kids in band, drill, cheer or whatever special groups are at the game. Sure, without a football game you wouldn't have all that, but without all that, what fun is it going to a football game? Yet band and others have to go wash cars and beg for money.

We need Mickey Hand to comment. Our wonderful tax assessor and collector is a high school referee.

Football and Basketball refs are paid on a sliding scale (not a percentage) for Varsity games with a base pay of a certain amount no matter how small the gate is, because, they have historically, been the only two sports that bring in much, if any, revenue at the gate. Sub varsity games in those sports and most other varsity sports weren't on a sliding scale since very few of them ever drew a crowd large enough to warrant a pay scale or because, in most instances, no admission was charged and everyone got in free. Not sure what it is these days since I've retired, but know that I used to get $45 for refing two varsity basketball games unless the gate was more than $150. At $150 it went up $10 to $55 and at $300, it rose to $65 and stayed there until the gate was $700. Single games were less. I seem to remember getting $30 for a single game at the bottom and making as much as $75 one night when I called a playoff game between Celina and Whitewright, but that's been several years ago when admission prices were lower, so I'm sure the rates have risen since then just like everything else. Both Refs also get paid round trip mileage from their home to the game, unless they live in close proximity to one another, in which case, one picks the other up and they ride together with only one being paid mileage. I can still remember a few times when my mileage money was more than the pay for the game.

all you goobers that sit in the stands and yell at the refs ought to sign up and ref a few games yourself, theres a lot more to it than what YOU think. every official on the field has a duty, they are NOT watching the WHOLE game as you are in the stands, they are watching the part of the line that they are in charge of (example back judge, line judge, head ref) you that think you know so much, SIGN UP! Believe me it's not what you'd ever think its like! It's alot of work!! for $65 to $80.00 a game....

Maybe this is a question for the Friday Night Fever Guys???

They also get free exercise!

$65 or 80 for 3 hours, that's not bad

Coaches don't get that much and just as many angry fans are yelling at them.
