Random Friday Morning Thoughts

  • "Fox News poll: Obama's lead grows as Romney's support slips." But I agree with the comment from yesterday that the national polls are irrelevant since it is all going to boil down to the electoral college. A relatively few states (and few people) will decide the election.
  • The girl who walked into the propeller last Christmas was on the Today Show yesterday.
  • Other Hurricane Harbor observation: Kids are wearing sunglasses as big as the regular glasses of Buddy Holly.
  • RG3 went 4 of 6 for 70 yards and a touchdown last night. (Video). Craig Miller on The Ticket this morning said his delivery was "weird", "high school like", and "reminds me of Vince Young his first two years."  That's the craziest thing he's ever said.
  • It's not the point of the Star-Telegram story, but there's a $10 million estate off of Blue Mound Road pretty close to 287?
  • The story on the local news last night was a cop body slamming a teenage girl after an "end of summer" party got out of hand. He took her down pretty hard, but we kind of need to know what prompted it before passing judgment.
  • I think there was a Pet Glamour Shot session that broke out in the house last night. (And I get a little nervous with a Fourth Grader walking by me with a Nikon camera with the words "Remember is is not a toy!" echoing in the background.)
  • Hope Solo is no fraud.
  • There's a difference between the SuperPAC Romney-killed-my-wife ad and the Dewhurst Chinese ad.  The Chinese ad was paid for by the Dewhurst campaign. (There was a late Cruz-killed-my-son ad but that was from a SuperPAC.)
  • But, man, the right wing is going crazy over the anti-Romney ad.
  • I don't understand Usain Bolt letting up on the 200 yesterday even though he won the gold. It's the finals. It's the Olympics. It might be the last time he's ever on that big of a stage. Why not go all out?
  • Dwight Howard to the Lakers? Mav fans need to prepare themselves for a decade of mediocrity.
  • West Nile Virus over sold?
  • Neighbor woke us up around midnight to alert us that our garage door was open. I probably was a little overcautious having Mrs. LL stand behind me with a baseball bat as I cracked the door open.

Of course the right is going crazy over the "Romney killed my wife" ad!

It has now come out that all of the facts in the ad are completely incorrect. It has also come to light that the Obama campaign already knew the facts about this man's story and they still refuse to refute the ad.

They are all depending on people to view the ad and not check into the facts. We know of course that the media will never check into this.

The Obama campaign* falsely accuses its Republican opponent of being complicit in the death of a woman. How much lower do they have to go before a person with even a trace of morality is outraged, regardless of party affiliation?

*The guy told the same story on an Obama campaign conference call a few months ago. Obama campaign deputy manager Stephanie Cutter claimed not to know anything about the story. Her lie was immediately found out. Though hard to prove, the Obama Super PAC obviously coordinated with the Obama campaign, which is against federal law. Already proven, however, is the lies told by the Obama side from start to finish.

Watched Peyton Manning run the Broncos first possession against the Bears. He looked good even tho he had a tipped pass picked off at the goal line. Will be interesting to see if he can still take a solid hit. The Bears never laid a finger on him.

Usain Bolt would rather let up in a race in order to say "I am so much greater than any other runner in the world I don't even have to run my fastest to win" instead of setting a world record. Great athlete, but has an ego that won't fit in the room with anyone else.

Yes, West Nile is oversold. People, this disease has been around as long as I can remember of my 70 years...it just went by another name...I will spell it like it sounds..encephilitus..or as some called it, sleeping sickness. Same symptums..many young kids have died from it but percentage wise not many...I never worry about it. Besides I have not even seen a mosquito in my area of WC this year...too dry...not many birds around either.

@9:04: No. Obama's biggest assets in 2008 was George W. Bush, the national economy, and the wars. And maybe national perception of Sarah Palin.

For better or worse, none of those things are going to help him this time out.

So far in 2012, he's running the worst re-election campaign I've ever seen.

WTF! Your wife had the baseball bat. Grow a pair. It is your duty to defend your wife not the other way around unless of course your wife can swing the bat harder than you can.

Scenario: I am in your garage up to no good with my own baseball bat. You come in unarmed with no way to defend yourself. I knock the crap out of you with my bat and you are done. Next person through the door is your wife armed with a baseball bat. Do I not hit her because she is a woman or do I bust her upside the head because she is armed? Conversely you both make it into the garage. Who is the bigger threat? The metrosexual with no weapon or the woman with a baseball bat. Who gets whacked with the Louisville Slugger?

O Brother...classic!

So I turns it over to the NBC Sports Network yesterday to check out some of that 'lympic action, and the first thing up is freestyle women's wrestling. I'm thinking "Aw man, if I didn't already have my hands full with this pint of cherries 'n' cream ice cream, I'd be flipping it over to see what Al and Peggy are up to."
Anyway, the first match, between Canada and Japan, was a yawner - they spent about 10 seconds out of two minutes actually rasslin'. The rest of the time was hand-grappling for an advantage and leaning against each other forehead to forehead. Looked like they were trying to achieve that TransPacifical Meditation thing.
The next bout was a little better - Russia and Bulgaria. It totally met all the stereotypes you expect from Eastern European female athletes. These were two gals(?) you wouldn't want to meet in an alley, dark OR well-lit.

You totally expect the women volleyball players to hug after every point, but the guys?! Uh, not so much. The Brazilian beach team hugged - not for set or match point, but after every point! Odd

There was a commercial for a specialty dating site - FarmersOnly.com. Huh? I know we're well into the 21st century, but I did not see that one coming. Has it really come to that now, farmers need their own site for hooking up? Don't they travel in pretty much the same circles all the time anyway? Rodeos, livestock auctions, tractor pulls? (That last one might need to be vetted)

Asking Romney to turn over documents that every presidential candidate has turned over since Romney's dad started it: Bad.

Asking Obama to turn over documents that no president has been asked to turn over, ever: Good.

Inquiring into the military service of a war hawk who did not complete physicals, flight training, or his service so he could go run a political campaign for a friend of his daddy's: Bad.

Yep. Republicans make perfect sense.

No wonder Romney cheated on his taxes--his people would fight for his right to do so.

WK, Don't you recall all the crap the Swiftboaters put out? As close as that election was, they likely turned that election. Now it's all gotten much worse due the Citizens United ruling. The Supremes really blew that ruling and we will all suffer the consequences.

But of course he doesn't want that, because it will be verified that Romney didn't pay taxes, and that the source was fellow Mormon, Republican, and Bain Capital CEO John Huntsman, Sr. Whose son is also a Republican.

Fun stuff!

@wordkyle: I think ANY Democratic candidate would have beaten almost any Republican candidate for Prez in 2008. It just wasn't going to be the GOP's year.

I don't know why the primaries turned out the way they did. I suppose it varied from voter to voter.

Obama clearly had more charisma.

I favored him over Hillary Clinton at the time because... well, there was just so much water under the bridge with the Clintons. I would have liked to have seen them mosey off into the sunset.

Were there people who voted for Obama because of his race? I'm sure there were! Calling it his biggest asset, however, overlooks the feeding frenzy over the remains of the Bush Administration that was going on at the time.

wordkyle said...

Don't worry, kids. Obama's White House will find a way to skirt the law and release Romney's private tax returns, so it can manufacture some sort of scandal. Obama's an expert at that. He got Alice Palmer thrown off the ballot against him in 1996, bullied David Hull into releasing damning sealed divorce records in 2004, then managed to unseal Jack Ryan's sealed divorce records in 2004, forcing Ryan to withdraw.

Romney, an apparently devout Mormon, has no whiff of scandal. Obama had to go back fifty years to discover anything remotely bad. ("Romney allegedly hazed a kid in high school? Scandalous!") The Democrats are scrambling to find something, anything, to distract voters from Obama's record. We'll see if Romney refuses to be bullied.

wordkyle said...

Katy, Obama's race was a huge factor in his election. When expressing their joy over his election, supporters never said "First ex-president of Harvard Review!" or "First ex-professor of law!" or "First ex-community organizer!" But boy howdy did they (over)use the phrase "First black president."

Katy,
there is no way to argue with wk.
When you have a question you go down every road opened to you and arrive at an answer. wk starts out with the answer and only goes down the roads that agrees with him. He just said that Romney is squeaky clean as if his hiding money in Swiss bank accounts didn't happen. As if offshore businesses for tax shelters didn't happen. AS if outsourcing American jobs didn't happen. Look for his rebuttal to this for more of his wiggle worm oratory.

Anonymous said...

4:50
It is illegal to hide money in Swiss bank accounts to avoid paying federal income tax. That is called tax evasion. It is the only reason Americans used Swiss bank accouns and offshore businesses. In 2009 the IRS offered amnesty (no penalties or federal charges) if you closed your overseas bank accounts and paid the back taxes. Over one hundred thousand Americans took advantage of this. Romney closed his Swiss bank accounts in 2010.
It is not illegal to outsource jobs, but it doesn't get you votes from working folks.

Yes wordy race was a factor in the 08 election hundreds of thousands if not millions voted against Obama because of his race.

wordkyle said...

Nice to see the congregation gathered together like this. Except for black people, few Obama supporters said they were going to vote for him because he was black before the election. However, the celebratory exclamations almost exclusively consisted of the words "First black President!" Very little, if any, of "Now we get that hope and change!" So yes, it's relatively easy to see the real motivation behind much of the support.

West Nile over sold: it's more or less like the flu and treatment is the same. The people it kills (what four this year nationwide?) are always weakened by other problems or age already. In a population of 300 million there have been about 200 cases of W.N.

We have real things to worry about without getting whipped up into tizzy over a bout of the flu.

You are techinically more likely to die in a lightning strike or from a bee sting and on an order of magnitude realistically more likey to die in a car wreck on your way to work.

Come to think of it I'm calling in sick Monday.

Number of people who voted against him because he was black: None.

That's some great logic you have goin' there wordy!

Katy Anders said...

@wordkyle: I make it a habit NOT to argue with people who think they have ALL the answers. It appears like you could explain how broken shoelaces and bird flu are caused by liberalism. So at this point, anything anybody says to you is a waste of your time, I know.

However, I will merely note that Obama's share of the black vote was in line with (within a couple points of) other recent Democratic candidates for President.

Your "evidence" for your position appears to be references to race made AFTER the election by the media, which is not evidence at all.

Think about it this way: There are very few people in this country who will be voting for Romney BECAUSE of his Mormon faith. Yet, if he were to win, I think that AFTER the election, there would be a collective sense of, "Wow. We just elected our first Mormon President."

The reality of it, on sort of an historical level, would kick in. It would be discussed AFTER the election more than BEFORE.

That's just how I see it. I don't have every answer the way some folks online appear to. But I'm also not an ideologue, so sometimes I accidentally stumble on things that make more sense than the ideologues...

wordkyle said...

Katy et al - Simple enough. Racism is not something a person will admit is their motivation (e.g., to vote for someone.) Comments made publicly by the media, celebrities, etc., celebrated the "first black President"-ness of Obama, not the triumph of his policies or political philosophy. (But again, celebrating that they, themselves voted for the first black President.)
