Random Friday Morning Thoughts

  • If you haven't seen the video coming out of Japan this morning, you need to. Amazing. It's not often you get to see a wave which includes cars, trucks, homes, and flames. (And this quick loading video at CNN gives you  a pretty good idea.) Edit: Link fixed
  • A huge fire at, and the evacuation around, a nuclear power plant should get everyone's attention.
  • And the death toll of "60" (which was being reported as late as 8:00 a.m.) is ridiculously low and ridiculously inaccurate.
  • It looks like there will be no damage in Hawaii as small waves hit the islands at around 7:50 a.m. CST.
  • Rangers CEO Chuck Greenberg Will resign today. Kudo's to The Fan's Richie Whitt who about two weeks ago mentioned on the air that he had heard rumors that Greenberg's out-in-front style and hot opinions about baseball personnel decisions was irking Nolan Ryan and others.
  • Car wreck in Fort Worth yesterday included four officers from Fort Worth PD in an unmarked car as part of a "Zero Tolercence Unit" -- whatever the heck that means. But that sure is a lot of cops in one car.
  • About "two dozen community members" showed up for the Decatur ISD question and answer session last night about the budget. I don't think we know anything more than what we did -- and I'm not sure anyone cares.
  • I guess that Spring Break puts working parents in quite the bind, doesn't it?
  • Viral video of the day: Tranny fight in a taco shop. Wait, what?
  • By the way, the "anti-cat stuff" we sprayed around the house plants worked for only about half a day.
  • Most insane story of the year?: "ARLINGTON - Drivers on Interstate 20 reported a motorcycle without a rider flying by them at 100 mph Thursday night between Matlock Road and New York Avenue in Arlington."

We care, but what are you going to do with a board who's top priority is athletics? Who will listen?

Hear they will be gutting several programs/riffing 20+ teachers but leaving the bloated HS coaching staff totally intact!

I am shocked! Just shocked!

Sounds like my first motocross race. My bike won the holeshot, me not so much.

I've been up all night watching the tsunami coverage. After the 4th or 5th time watching the video, you start to notice all the small things scurrying around in front of the wave.

50 dead? I saw 50 dead in 10 seconds.

"Tranny fight in a taco shop" - the number of possible lewd puns approaches infinity.

a fail on the CNN link, but you've got good coverage on the riderless motorcycle

So now you have a degree in meteorology?

How do you know prior to the event if the Tsunami will hit Hawaii?

Someone needs to call all the Hawaiians & tell them to ignore the warnings. Barry Green said nothing is going to happen.

Barry, sprinkle the crushed red pepper in all of your houseplants. Won't hurt your plants, but your cat will leave them alone!

From the Town Hall Meeting:

The 1.1M earlier earmarked for athletic upgrades would keep 10-12 teachers employed for the next two years.

That 1.1M to date has not been encumbered/spent, therefore available to soften the blow to DISD programs and teachers.

Here's hoping the DISD board announces March 22, that they are tabling those athletic upgrades for two years and applying that
1.1M to at least softening the effects of the budget crises for two years.

You realize that's a confirmed number of deaths, not a speculated final death toll, don't you? You're smarter than that.

Anonymous said...

Re number of dead following tsunami: if that's all they are reporting dead right now what's the big deal. As things settle down and rescue workers get to work the toll will rise. Would you feel better if they said (with no sources to back it up) that hundreds of thousands were dead would it make you feel better? Sometimes the ridiculous things people obsess about make me shake my head in amazement.

Now I know you can do better than this girl. This picture looks like it was taken in 1988.

Don't give a damn about news from Japan....just not close enough to my life to care. I have never understood why some people get so into something that doesn't even affect them because those world events have never held an interest for me until it touches me and mine.

What I DO care about from today's morning thoughts is the DISD action. Thank you Mr. Howard for giving us some real information. I, too, still hold out hope that the board will do the right thing and re-direct those funds towards keeping teachers in the classrooms. They also should consider slashing the coaching staff, as 8:28 remarked.

In Chico they have a an athletic director that doesn't teach, or win football games. Let's see we can cut your staff at the exemplary elementary and near exemplary middle school, but let's pay an exorbitant amount to someone to mow the grass. If you need all day to coordinate a program at a 1A school, then you have complete waste of tax payers money.

Anti Cat issue - get some large containers of chili powder, red pepper, black pepper and sprinkle around the problem area. We did this with a dog problem and it's kept them away.

CNN has a Pete Delkus wannabe, screaming doom and gloom about the tsunami wave that might hit the West Coast. PANIC! PANIC!

Not with:

1. That model Ford
2. Those sunglasses
3. That swimsuit
4. That tattoo
5. That piercing
6. That early to mid 90's 5 series BMW

She's a short girl. Barely up to the window of that truck. Short girls with big hoots are my favorite. I'd pull on her puppy dog ears, or whatever you call those two pony tails.

9:12, you might want to have some concern over Japan as they pretty much financially own the US. If it is down to you and yours, then by that time, we are all in a mess. So that is why we need to care about what happens around the world.

Jerry,

Did anyone ask the superintendent if he was going to give back the ten grand that the board of idiots gave to him in the form of a raise?

That would probably come close to paying a part time employee for a year.

Oh Hell, the I don't care guy is back.

As far as a riderless motorcycle, who knows. But one came around me going southbound on 287 last night running least a 100, without lights. About crapped myself.

Yeah I know, you don't care.

Funny that you agree with me when it comes to hating a class of people. Sorry though, I'm just opposed to the Japanese, not all the various brown people like you are.

Fred Jones - Your correct about one thing. The elementary school is the best campus of the three and the principal there is great. But the middle and high schools need some major house cleaning, beginning with the principals. Look at the student/staff ratio's at all three and notice that there are about 6 positions too many at those two.
They should can both the middle and high school principals and let the elementary one take over all three. Then things would get done right.

DISD school board will try and spend more of your money on TURF and football coaches. They have already spent money on the track and bleachers, lights that was never voted on and was put in with out voting on it. Now how happy are you with your school board...

11:32- We both agree that there is a principal at all three campuses'. After that you needed some education:
Lesson 1: Certifications are not the same, elementary is more generalist for all subjects and secondary (that means 7-12 grade) has subject certifications, therefore, the average class size is usually somewhat less.

#2 Both middle school and high school increased passing rate on TAKS. So I don't understand your complaint unless your kid was disciplined and held to the same standards as everyone else. If that's the case here's some tissue...

#3 Interesting you mentioned 6 staff members, that is exactly the number of coaches added by your current ad. Cut the coaches back and make the ad teach and you have solved part of the problem.

#4 I hope your ad gets the job he applied for at Alvord ISD...

11:32 I hope he does get rid of some of the coaches. there are some that need to go. But most of those teach as well, so what are we to do about those teaching positions? as for the AD - I hope he takes over as assistant principal with the elementary principal and they can run all 3 campuses. Lose the salary of those 2 do nothing MS and HS principals would save 3 or 4 teaching jobs...

Anonymous said...

6:57 That's funny... the AD being assistant principal, that is a certified position. Back in late 1990's - 2000's when my kids where students at the high school he had to leave because he couldn't get certified in anything but pe. -F.J

Chico ISD enrollment has dropped by 10% so cuts are in order regardless of the budget cuts to schools. The new high school has space not needed.

Back in 2006 the franchise tax for businesses was reduced so Texas could keep or bring in jobs. Every school in the county have built new schools, including improvements in athletic facilities.

Chico ISD has too many coaches. Just look at the team pictures to see the ratio between players and coaches.

The problem can be resolved in firing the school board and vote for some new people who value learning first.

Anonymous said...

There are two positions up for election on the Chico School Board. Why don't you people that think your so smart, blabbing about coaches that need to go instead of other positions come on down, get yourself a packet and see if you can get educated on what's really going on in our school.
