Random Thursday Morning Thoughts

  • Those were some incredibly high winds last night. I saw a full sized trampoline in the street this morning - upright.
  • I thought for a moment what a crazy scene it would be if I were to get out and start jumping on it.
  • One thing about technical service (my home Internet issues are better but still not perfect) is that you have to go through the same phone tree and, when you get a real person, the same script.
  • The craziest thing my tech support people say is, "Ok, Mr. Green, I'm going to take ownership of this call so we can solve your problem." Ummkay. Get after it.
  • I think I'm going to Costa Rica in February.
  • I've got a crazy female friend who throws a tantrum once every six months or so. Her most recent one included "unfriending" me of Facebook. And I've known her for almost 20 years.
  • News you can use: There's only one web site authorized by law to provide free credit reports: www.annualcreditreport.com (Or at least that's what the most recent issue of the Texas Bar Journal said.)
  • In Paris, Texas, an 18 year old with an IQ of 47 pleads guilty to five counts of sexual abuse of a child and the jury assesses punishment of 30 years, 30 years, 30 years, 5 years, and 5 years. Holy cow. If that's not insane enough, the judge decided to stack the sentences to make it a 100 year sentence. That's Lamar County Judge Eric Clifford who justified his actions by saying, "In the state of Texas, there isn't a whole lot you can do with somebody like him."Can I call a sitting judge an idiot?
  • And now I've got a computer virus that is crazy: You click on a google search result and it hijacks the link and redirects to a random site. And that makes it very difficult to google how to get rid of it. Edit: And whoever suggested MalwareBytes is a genius. Good job.
  • Edit: Want to hear Boston fans last night chant "You Do Steroids" to A-Rod as he came up to bat?

If this is your home computer with the virus, that's probably a large part of the problem with your internet connection......you need to take it to a professional, or at least back up your porn, er, data, and reinstall your operating system. That's the only proven method of getting rid of all that rogueware.

And it was because of something you said on your blog, right?

I had that problem a few months back. Can't remember the name of the virus, but I downloaded malwarebytes (which is free) and it killed it dead. Best free anti-virus program I've ever used.

Actually, Double fake Bill Gates has the best solution. It will also leave you with a much faster computer. Or you can try the three or four programs that we use when customers F**& up their systems. It will usually work but sometimes an op system rebuild is the only way to get rid of all the problems.

Costa Rica sounds like a great place to go.

We have another storm coming across the Jack County line. Has dropped 2 inches of rain in the center of its path.

Anonymous said...

The beginning of the Rain made for some slick roads too. The water Pool's on 114, west of Boyd. My Daughter and Grandson had spun around and slid backwards off 114 down a steep bank across the other lane, into some tree's.
They are thankfully OK, I guess my gripe, and reason for posting this is, NO ONE STOPPED. The people following that saw it happen just kept driving, the onlookers just kept driving. It is, a "different day".

Delete your hosts file. Then go out and buy a Mac.

Love it! Great for the grass and flowers

Ditto the rec for malwarebytes. I had the same virus you've got a few months ago, and malwarebytes is the only program that would take care of it, and that includes two antivirus programs I paid for.

I know you are in Wise Co, but there's some pros in Denton who will fix your computer right up. TACC I think is the name. Technicians Against Computer Cruelty, maybe. Anyway, they know there stuff. Might be worth the trip. My laptop had the same virus you describe and it required professional intervention.

Oh dear Lord! I am just sick about the retarded 18 yr old sentenced to 100 years. There has to be a better solution. I know he committed a horrific crime. But, he will not survive prison. He has a 47 IQ. There has to be a better solution. He cannot go to prison. That poor young man. Don't get me wrong, I am heartbroke for the victim too.

Anonymous said...

Everyone that commits a crime is mentally retarted, mentally ill, had a bad childhood, etc.

We also had the trojan virus that you have Barry. VERY FRUSTRATING.

Malawarebytes (MBAM) is indeed the way to go. Couple of suggestions...

1.) Learn to use safe mode to run MBAM when it gets really bad.

2.) Run MBAM on quick scan. Restart your computer, run full scan. Restart your computer, do it again. These trojans are very crafty at hiding in your registry.

3.) Buy Norton or McAfee online and let subscription automatically update itself daily.

4.) Ignore the Mac crowd... no one writes viruses for macs because so few people have them... And Beta was better than VHS too. *rolls eyes*

Re:facebook... unfriending? Virtual unfriending? meh.

Re: Boston... yeah, nice to see the good guys winning.

My daughter hit a 6 point on 380 last night. Probably totaled her little car.

Let's open up deer season early. This is happening way too often in Wise County.

PC to PC love in the interweb bath house can be dangerous.

Get some condoms for your pc. Apparently they are free at the clinic. The places that thing has to go it will require some serious shot to keep it alive for any length of time....kind of like magic johnson.

C'mon the real issue today is how did someone take the photo of the blonde driving?

However I noticed that she didn't enlarge when I clicked on the photo.

10:16 is the most correct about getting rid of your virus. I do want to add somethings to it. 1. if you back up the virus by backing up the infected files on your computer, you will not get rid of this virus. And 2. Before you do anything you have to turn off the system restore on your computer. That's what saves the virus to your registry and will keep reloading the virus. Go to control panel, click on system, find system restore tab, check the box to turn off system restore. I've been doing computer work for years and this is what works.

9:57 - What if your 6 year old child was the victim - would you have a different outlook? How would you explain to your child that if the person is retarded, it is not his fault? I am not seeing it. I just hope you don't have a child that becomes a victim.

is wise county a 2 buck county now?

Barry-

If you get a Mac, you won't have viruses.

10:16 is wrong about Macs. They won't get a virus, and they are the most popular, easy to use, not-to-mention fun. We had a PC for years, and had one virus after another - got a new one, and it kept getting them too - even with Norton and all the other anti-virus stuff supposed to work. We finally got a Mac, and for the past 6 or 7 years - no viruses, no problems, and yes, they last forever. You won't be replacing it like you do your PC every 2 or 3 years.

Ah, the "what if it was your kid/wife/friend?" argument for overly harsh punishments. Don't presume that 9:47 doesn't have any principles. To me at least, it wouldn't make any difference if it was my kid. The question is not whether or not it was yours or somebody else's kid; the question is how deserving of the punishment the perpetrator is. If my child was molested by another child, would I want that child locked up for 100 years? No. So why would I want a man with the IQ of a child locked up for 100 years?

Anonymous said...

Yeah.....you can call him an idiot. But I wish he would be the judge in every child rape case. Let's just see if he like being forced to do "things" in prison.

I've been "unfriended" on facebook before. It's a little sly, and I think a wimpy way to not tell someone you pissed them off. Or maybe it's just plain rude.

I once had a project in Costa Rica, San Jose, putting software in the Brewery there. They were also the Frito-Lay distributer...so beer and snacks...the perfect project. The hotel was nice and had a small casino in it. But breakfast was the best, fresh mangos and several varieties of fresh bananas right off the trees in back of the hotel. Nice country. About 75% of the population is under 18 though.

11:12... I don't know if wise county is a 2 buck county, but that 6 point she hit would have made a nice little trophy for some hunter. She sent me a pic of her holding the rack.

Barry -

You have my sympathy on your infection. The first program I bought for my current PC several years back was Norton (Symantec). It eventually died a few months back when a variant of the Vundo trojan family killed it. The only way I finally pried all the tentacles from my system (XP Pro) was to install the following group of free programs and use them all religiously.

1.Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware
2.Avast!
3.SUPERAntispyware
4.Ad-Aware
5.Spybot-Search&Destroy
6.Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool

They are all free and collectively do a protective task that no one program can do. No more Norton (with updates that never caught the current variant). My group of six runs once a week & keep the barbarians at bay.

How come it doesn't occur to anyone just to castrate the tard? Sure would be cheaper than maintaining him in prison.

I'll go one step further and recommend neutering anyone with an IQ under 93. We would improve humanity quickly.

To those that the judge was so bad,Is there a vacant house in your neighbrohood he could move into?Maybe your kids would watch him?I bet that is out of the question. There are places for criminally insane people.DAGO

It matters not the perp\pervs IQ. If he is a menace to society, keep him away from society.

Till he dies. Then let him go.

18 year olds with IQ's of 47 used to be locked up without having to waste money on court trials or having to subject innocent children to their physical abuse. Opening up the loony bins was one of the biggest mistakes our society ever made.

In addition to comments above, you might try the following, which are always on my PCs;

1. AVG Antivirus Free for personal use
2. Acronis for Backups
3. PGP Whole Disk Encryption If it is a laptop you really need encryption for when it is stolen. For when the feds attack. you really want TrueCrypt but that isn't for newbies. For the record, I don't worry about the feds, so I don't use TrueCrypt but it provides plausible deniability. A lawyers take on if that would really work in court would be kinda cool.
4. Make sure you are behind a hardware firewall/router that provides NAT translation.
5. Make sure your Windows Firewall (or another host firewall) is turned on and has only necessary exceptions. This is important to help your neighbors cause it can help block outgoing virus payloads from being deployed remotely
6. Run Nessus against your PC. It will perform a security audit against your PC. Less time intensive, but less good, would be to run NMap just to find the open ports on your system. Nmap is a port scanner. Nmap will help you diagnose almost any networking connection problem, but you might need netcat too.
7. Wireshark (formerly Ethereal) is an open source network sniffer that will record all traffic flowing over your network connections. You can use it to see if your computer is secretly calling out to websites that it shouldn't be.

Also, if you think you have a virus, do the world a favor and unplug your internet connection until you fix it.

If you had a good known backup, then you could reformat/reinstall and be done in a couple hours, instead of living with the problem.

Like the man said, "remove the rock from your shoe rather than learning to limp comfortably."
