Somebody Sent This To Me . . .

. . . which is from Grace Fellowship Church in Wise County. I'm not making a single comment. Not a one. I promise. Really. Well, at least they aren't asking for a jet like Benny Hinn. Ok, just one comment. Now I'm done.

Absolutely Unnacceptable. Absurd. You think that's what Jesus wants? I think not. Jesus could deliver the word of God anywhere. He didn't need all that high tech garbage and fancy chairs or fancy landscaping to do it.

Disgusting. Think of all the starving people you could feed. Think of all the homeless you could shelter. They might as well be getting away with murder. Disgraceful.

I sent this in to the blog. Let me explain why... I was recently involved in a project (that flopped) to gather donations for a women's shelter that serves victims of domestic violence and their children. We were attempting to collect donations, such as diapers, baby shampoo, and other toiletries from local churches. I contacted Grace Fellowship and the response I got was "well, we don't even have a building, but send us the list anyway." I did this and attempted several times to get a response from this church. They would not even email be back. And then low and behold...I received this in the mail today!!!

Grace Fellowship has caused more division in Wise County than any single thing in 30 years. It is a cult. It is egocentric disgust. Repulsive. Embarrasment. It should be DFC - Disgrace Fellowship Church. As a Christian, i believe this cult is one of the most harmful things that could ever happen to Wise County. PEOPLE WAKE UP!!! GET DEPROGRAMED!!! I am in fear of driving Hwy 114 now.

Let me get this strait you people don’t believe a church should spend money on computers or nice chairs or supply for a day care. You believe a church should be a miserable place to go. There should be no learning, no caring environment, and no comfort in the house of God. It should all be hell fire and brimstone and a place no child looks forward to going to. The people of the Church should not spend their money on making the place look nice, and if they do they are a Cult. Do you know any members of the church? Are you mad because they don’t hang out with you? Maybe its because they are nice and helpful people and you believe only a person who has no grip on reality can be that nice. You people are crazy. You really want to know what is wrong with Wise county is all of the backwoods small town mentality that attacks anyone or anything that brings about change. It is good to see a church use different approaches to spread the word of God, because guess what most people aren’t listening today. If it doesn’t involve the latest and greatest technology kids won’t want anything to do with it. I would guarantee that if they were spending that kind of money on the High school football team no one would make a peep. Here is an idea lets try to act like Christians and wish them well in their endeavors and move forward.

"It is good to see a church use different approaches to spread the word of God, because guess what most people aren’t listening today."

Luke - they are not "spreading the word of God" via this $$ request - they are asking for money - and using God's name to get it.

I don't have a problem w/churches having nice things - I think it is wonderful for churches to have nice things and be a nice place to go. However - I think they should get these things in time - as they grow - and from their members. Sending out $$ requests to random people and saying it is in "God's name" is money grubbing and religious blackmail (If you loved God you would give us money.) And what about the "(give us money) Another way to invest in God's eternity." Now I have to pay for salvation??

Honestly - I don't know anything about this church other than it is large. It is the "Give me money in God's name" crap that bugs me.

Anonymous said...

I don't have a problem with making a church nice. The problem is like 10:41 said. How much are they giving back outside the church. Not in promotions either. A church is to reach out to the hurting, sick, weak, thos in need. It doesn't need bells and whistles to do that. So build the nice building but don't forget what you're there for. I didn't see people say much when all new big churches were being buildt in Decatur.

Wow-some of you people are incredible pieces of work. GFC a cult? Those of you who have that opinion, have you ever attended a worship service there? Are you so closed minded that if someone does something differently than everyone else, that makes it wrong. Do you even know what a cult is, if you do then you know GFC is not a cult. Jesus Christ is taught and worshiped as Lord and Savior and as the only way to ever be with God. Those folks have fun when they worship, but also reverance to God the creator of everything, even you haters. Heck, they even love everybody no matter where they come from or what they wear, or what they drive or what they have done in the past. They don't even get mad if you sit in the wrong place or park in the wrong spot. My goodness, its not even a fashion show, come as you are. Yes they have needs, like moving into a new house. Perhaps these requested needs are for their members and guests or for people who support all Churches. Perhaps some people want to give over and above normal tithes and offerings. Do you even know what a tithe is.Can you say this, some people might need a tax wright-off. My goodness, what a novel approach in letting people know what you need to accomplish a task. I guess kind of like those new bleachers in Decatur or a new head coach in Bridgeport.

Anonymous said...

7:19 get real. If the have needs then fine but give back to the mission that was started like saving the lost. Not making name for yourself. The problem some have it seems a little much.

Ok... What about the $37,000 chairs? Or the $20,000 "phone system".. come on. What the heck kind of chairs do you really need that add up to that amount-that is absurd. A phone system? You have got to be kidding me. Just get a KDB office switch. At most $500. It is one thing to make your church nice, another to try and grab money from people in "Gods name". Especially for stupid purchases such as what is indicated on the pamphlet.

WHY can people NOT see now MORE than at any other time in modern history that the sole purpose of RELIGION is for the BENEFIT of RELIGION.

RELIGION has killed more people in the name of God than ANY other cause known to humankind.

RELIGION has ALWAYS been corrupt. Look at The Pyramids, Vatican City and EVERY global RELIGION.

The "Holy Catholic Apostolic Church" until the mid 1960's owned the majority of the world's known gold. The Catholic Church currently owns the most PRICELESS art collection in the WORLD. The Catholic Church is their OWN Government. Yep, Vatican City is considered an individual government and does NOT fall under the jurisdiction of the Italian government. Sooooooo, who can fault OTHER religions for attempting to achieve what has been achieved by "The One True Church."

Just to give YOU a CLUE. GOD dwells within the heart of EVERY human and all ANY human need do is look within their own heart to KNOW the will of GOD. NO ONE needs some self-appointed representative of God to read/translate from a book of myths and fables to understand the will of GOD. Humans who believe they REQUIRE a "shepherd" are TRULY sheep and will forever remain a step AWAY from God.

ANYTIME someone expects YOU to suspend ALL knowledge of REASON and REALITY to BELIEVE something you are being told, PERHAPS what you are being told is UNBELIEVABLE, UNREASONABLE and UNREALISTIC.

JUST A THOUGHT!

IT IS APPEARANT THAT ALL OF THE PEOPLE SO AGAINST GFC HAVE NOT ATTENDED THERE I HAVE LIVED IN WISE COUNTY FOR 10 YEARS AND HAVE VISITED MANY CHURCHES AND NONE OF THEM HAVE EVER MADE ME FEEL MORE AT HOME AS GFC DID, YES I AGREE THAT SENDING OUT THE DONATION REQUEST TO PEOPLE OTHER THAN IN THE CHURCH IS WRONG,MABY SEND OUT AN INVITE TO ATTEND. WHERE WAS THE UP ROAR WHEN CORNER STONE IN DECATUR SPENT ALMOST 100,000 TO REMODEL THEIR SANCTUARY WITH CARPET AND PEWS. OH YES THAT IS ONE OF THE CHURCHES THAT ALREADY HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED.

What about all the big and better than you churches in Decatur. What was said we they were being buildt.

Anonymous said...

10:41 pm here. Let me clarify... they did not send this to me randomly. I have attended their church several times when they were still meeting in Bridgeport and that is why I am on their mailing list. That is also why I thought they would be willing to help our project, but I was wrong. They did not even have the courtesy to get back with me.

Anonymous said...

I'd pay $37,000 if they'd leave me alone. I really do not like getting their full-color ads in my mail, and their annoying ads in the WCMessenger. If you have to advertise a church that much to get people to come, you're doing something wrong.

Anonymous said...

after reading the comments on this, im convinced that wise co is so screwed in the head that even if Grace Fellowship was a cult they couldnt possible harm this bunch.

Anonymous said...

That is something else... What the hell are you spending on $10,000 on computers for? Kiosks...which will be used to do what? Check your e-mail right before services? To look up bible passages?

$10,000 is 20 computers at $500 a piece. You don't need a $3,000 computer for a kiosk. Dell and HP have perfectly capable computers (including a LCD monitor) for $500. They do more than 99% of computer users will ever need.

I love how they just put these proposals out there, without backing up the requests with details. I'd like to see ho many computers end up in this atrium. I bet the rest gets snorted off a hooker's ass. Or some slick computer integrator is selling them some overwrought kiosk that is obsolete before they even unwrap it.

Speaking of "megga churches" with nice things--how about First Baptist in our fine city of Decatur? Has anyone thought about how many people they have reached with their "Taj Mahal" looking building and their arrogant preacher? I think there are more bitter, bad attitudes there than any church in the county. Leave Grace Fellowship alone. Atleast they look OUTSIDE their walls to reach the lost.

Let's not be too hard on this church. In this country, we are so far away from what Christianity really is and what churches should be about that it really is almost unfair for a "Christian" or church to be expected to know how to believe or behave accordingly. What does God need with landscaping? etc. And why would a real Christian give a flip if services were held in a palace or in a barn?

I have never attended services at Grace Fellowhip. I don't plan to ever attend services at Grace Fellowship. My mother, 81 years old, did visit the church twice. She liked it well enough until she received a packet from them. It was also asking for money. It went so far as suggesting ways to make more money to give to the church; suggested listing them as beneficiary of any life insurance policies; get a 2nd or 3rd job; reduce your personal living expenses, such as eating out or movies. It was a major TURN OFF. You might expect this to be mailed out to members of the congregation but NOT TO VISITORS!

Let them enjoy their new building, but that's all it is....a building. Find a church that you are comfortable with, worship your savior, give what you are able.

Grace Fellowship scares me.....count me out.

Anonymous said...

This pamplet was NOT sent out to random people--it was sent by the church to PEOPLE WHO PROVIDED THEIR CONTACT INFORMATION. If anyone has a problem with receiving such information, keep your address PRIVATE. There's no reason to come down on Grace Fellowship. Let this go, people. Let it go. The sooner the better.

Anonymous said...

If you are a visitor to the church, and looking for a church home, yeah, fill out the "Visitor Information" card.

By doing that, I can't believe they start drilling you for money. They should at least wait until they have their hooks into you!!

Anonymous said...

9:40: You absolutely CANNOT be talking about Grace Fellowship. They would NOT "suggest" such things. What they WOULD suggest is finding a church family somewhere. Not necessarily there, but SOMEWHERE. This is NOT a money-grubbing church. It is simply NOT. Accusing them of sending such material to an 81 year old VISITOR is preposterous. Maybe you should visit the church sometime. I think (I know!) you will be PLEASANTLY surprised.

Anonymous said...

To 9:47 - I'm sorry to disillusion you, but I saw the packet myself. IT WAS FROM Grace Fellowship. Even if I did graduate from Decatur, I can still read.

I will not be visiting the church. I have a church home where I am very happy. I know many people that attend Grace Fellowship and are very HAPPY there. More power to them...I'm glad they found a home. But I can guarantee you this, it's not my cup of tea.

Anonymous said...

My family visited the church when it was in the Bridgeport High School. A big turn off for us. We were given a card to fill out with personal information. Yes, including our checking acct information. NO THANK YOU!

Barry you knew what was coming when you posted this. You do need to examine your motives. When you dable in God things be darn sure you are not playing God.

Should they ask their members and regular attenders to help supply the furniture and equipment for their new building? Absolutely. Should they be extremely careful who they send such a request to? Absolutely.

I am a regular attender at GFC and it is a great church, BUT someone in the office screwed-up on this one. It was a mistake, let's not crucify anyone over it!

Anonymous said...

I have been approached by quite a few GFC to attend. They make a big deal about wearing what you want and how much I would love the music. These two factors seem to be the two big "selling points" if you will about this church. Also, about being united with each other.

These things disturb me and make me skeptical of this church.

First of all, I don't know many churches these days who have a dress code. Most churches are open to whatever a person chooses to wear. Many people who dress up do so because they feel church is a place of reverance and by dressing in what you feel good in, that often times puts you in more of a mode of worship and quiet reflection to receive God's word.

As far as the music, I love a variety and feel music is an intregal part of worship. There is nothing that can make me feel more connected to God and the congregation of the church than music played on a pipe organ, or singing an old traditional hymn, listening to a children's choir, or a soloist. Whether the music is classical, traditional, or written in this century, doesn't matter to me. My church's hymnal has songs written centuries ago as well as Amy Grant songs, Bill Gaither, and other newer song writers.

It makes no difference to me (or most people I believe) if someone has on shorts, a suit and tie, or anything else as long as they are decent and in church to worship and not to 'be seen'. I believe children learn much in the way their family worships, and if church is set aside from their everyday life --- they learn and experience being still, quiet, listening, singing, praying, reading scripture, and even how to have fellowship with young and old. When chaos and lots of noise is created in a place of worship, it makes it much harder for the brain to focus and process what is heard during worship.

Unity between church members is important; however, reaching outside to others in the community and beyond is what Jesus taught and is what we are suppose to be doing and how we are suppose to be living. Not just saving souls - but helping others, listening to others needs, making others feel connected to the world.

It seems that GFC is more about bringing people "in" than reaching "out" to others and serve God with love and humanity for others. They have created an environment of exclusion rather than inclusion. The 'come be a part of us - come join our clique' and sit high on "right" hand of God Almighty - not the "wrong" side.

Other churches are trying this same approach because it is popular and churches believe that is where the money is. This is very unfortunate. I think they are not giving people enough credit. People should not have to be 'entertained' or 'gimmicked' into going to church. By living your life everyday in a Christian manner (or whatever belief system you choose), it is the subtlties and/or the good you see in people that draws people together.

When you are subtle in your witness and are humble with your witness, people can see that. This type of witness is longer lasting in my book than the "I want it now - come and get it" kind of conversion. Sort of a religious "high" if you will. This is where I think many believe this type of churh can be paralleled with a cult.

This needed to be addressed and you have every right to comment (as it IS your blog) and I think most (who know you) - know that you're motives were not malicious and that your family would be proud of you. This "Church" is all about numbers. Now, if they reach 1 lost person, a pupose has been served. But, I do knoe from experience, they spend more time soliciting members of other churches, usually with a fat bank account, than they doe reaching those with no church home. Sad, sad, sad. They need to get their priorities straight.

One parting question. they have met FOR FREE at BHS and PHS for over a couple of years now. Exactly where has their money been going? Oh yeah, advertising.

P.S. Thanks for the Grace Fellowship Footballs you passed out at Halloween.

First off, let me say that I am absolutely appalled by the misuse of "Christianity" seen here. I am in absolute disgust to the point that I am almost in tears. Grace Fellowship has already bought a multi-million dollar facility in Paradise and is still asking for $201,000 for meaningless things. Let me start with the obvious. $10,000 for a computer kiosk? It's a church. What does a church need with a computer kiosk? $11,000 for round tables and chairs? A $20,000 telephone data system. For a church. This is something a big business should have. Not a church. A $40,000 GFC MONUMENT. If that doesn't scream cult, I don't know what does. What appalls me is that there are people who are so money and power hungry who have amazing manipulation skills who can lure innocent "hey let's try this Jesus thing out" people in with their nice things. There are so many people in need of money in the form of food, clothes, and shelter, yet this Christmas all they are worried about is a monument to glorify their brainwashing. It states that it is "another way for you to invest in eternity." So, go out and sleep with unreal amounts of people, slap your children, kick a puppy, and then go burn a cross, because as long as you show up on December 17th and fork over and unreal amount of money, you'll make it into heaven. The worst part of the whole thing is where it says "it's not equal gifts, but equal sacrifice." This statement almost makes me throw up. Jesus Christ gave his LIFE so we could all be forgiven for our sins. Somehow forking over a few bucks so your kid can have a place to go check his myspace doesn't put you on the same playing field as Jesus. Not even close. I can't even think straight right now. My strongest conviction is the one that I hold in my faith in God and Grace Fellowship is making a mockery of the whole Protestant faith. To Grace Fellowship, I say go tacky up someone else's religion. This is part of the reason for many atheists and agnostics. I am not saying that I am perfect in the least bit, but soliciting God and my religion is something that is absolutely grotesque. I know quite a few of my friends go here, and I'm not writing this to slander you. Your church has already done enough. It's hard to sleep at night knowing that this kind of thing is happening in your own back yard.

The kiosks are a way for parents to securely check their children into the nursery (the computer keeps track of contact information and issues them a pager to be used during services if they need to return to the nursery to assist with their child). They ARE necessary. Has any one of you priced telephone systems lately? If so, you'd know that most any system equipped with voice mail and other necessary data features costs this much.

It sounds like MANY of you have no idea what some members of Grace often do on the weekends (it's called Power Zone Saturday and they reached many families in Springtown lately).

Anonymous said...

That's funny. All those bad parents in my church just drop their kids off in the nursery. How foolish! And our dinky little phone system? Now I see the light. God wants us to spend money on stupid stuff and wants us to find a way to make them necessary. And so, let's solicit him and make OUR church a better place instead of reaching out. Because that's not what Christianity is about...it's about the almighty dollar. Does anyone remember when Jesus got pretty ticked off one day in a synagog? I believe he may have been upset by them soliciting religion for a profit. Wow...yet God is telling you that you need a computer to check your children in and out of a nursery. Go sell crazy somewhere else.

In a nutshell, you can't outgive God. It's in the Bible, and it's a simple principal.

Just so you know, the FBC in Decatur caught a lot of flack from its members when they built that large building, and it split up the congregation. The COC in Decatur was rebuilt after the tornado with mostly insurance money, but they already had plans drawn to expand before that happened.

GFC shouldn't put the cart before the horse.

I've been there several times with my children. No one ever contacted me about my spiritual needs. No one every tried to make personal contact with me while I was there. They just wore their fake smiles, and looked down their noses to me. The music stinks, and my kids would rather go to our old boring church with only 15 people than attend that place.

It's not about being different. Different is cool. Change is progress. However, evangelists with charm, digging into the pockets of honest, hardworking people, and using the God to guilt you into it is not new.

Leave those old ladies and their social security checks alone!
Even though I don't like Barry much, posting the facts and making public what has been done is not biased.

Anonymous said...

11:27...I think you have it figured out. Let's have church in a barn without security features and communication devices. In 2006. What a great idea.

GRACE FELLOWSHIP DOES NOT CLAIM TO BE PERFECT - OR EVEN CLOSE TO PERFECT. It does claim, I believe, to play a part in bringing the people of Wise County closer to the Lord. They are (I believe) humbled and honored to play this part.

Anonymous said...

11:38 can you tell me how they have done this?

Anonymous said...

Maybe they can apply for a Bushco faith-based-initiative grant to help pay for the kiosks, phone system, and all the other necessary crappola they are wanting. Or, maybe, they should get their tax-exempt status revoked. This is revolting to me.

11:32 - That's not what I'm saying at all. There's common ground between a shack and Hilton. It's a great business scam, nevertheless.

11:23, then why the $10,000? You can do that with a $500 computer and a $50 webcam. $10,000 buys you 18 computers and webcams. Do that many parents need to check up on their crotchfruit at one time?

Shouldn't god's little angels be so perfect that they do not need pagers for their parents? Its a good thing we know what the computers are for. Then we'll have pictures of all these delinquents when we need mug shots of them in the future. Also, we'll have a front-row seat to the Kool-Aid party webcast when the BATF rolls up to GFC, where the C stands for compound.

EXCUSE ME! I'm new to this blog. I am a pastor of a country church here in Wise county. So, what's the big deal? You got a "wish list" from a church. You are free to throw it away, right? Or did you notice a new item on your tax statement for GFC? No? Where's the beef? No one is REQUIRED to support GFC or any other church. No skin off your nose or money out of your pocket?
Judas said money was being mis-spent because it wasn't spent on the poor. Those of you who think GFC should spend money differently, are you giving money to those causes you trumpet? If not, SHUT UP! Judas had no concern for the poor, either! He just wanted to have control of the money.
You attend another church? Okay! How many people have made first time committments to the Lord, in your church in the last year? Remember, that "reaching the lost" thing Jesus mentioned?
I don't know anyone on staff at GFC and I only know two or three people who attend there, but I do know that they have probably baptized more people in the last two years than all the churches you attend put together!
You are a mean spirited bunch.
Great topic! Small hearted people!

You people of Wise County are all so shallow....every church that was built in this area was built with fellowship money. That is the only way a Church can be built. You belong or you don't - you donate or you don't - you attend church or you don't. Whether it be your God or Their God - everyone needs a 'God'
Everyone is entitled to their own actions.
That's it...nuff said~~!!

to all you dumbass's that are bitching about GFC, have you ever been there?? if you had you would know that that building is not for just the church, it was built as a multi-purpose building. does it even look like church to you?? that list of items is not just for the church, its for the building, that can be used by the public. they built it for everyone to be able to use, its like the Civic Center in Decatur. They just wanted to provide a nice building for use in Wise County, not just for the church! so quit your bitching

First of all, the way the church spends money does not make it a cult. At least from a Christian perspective, it is the orthodox beliefs that a people have which define them as a cult or not.

Secondly, I would submit that quite a few of the complainers of Grace Fellowship being fiscally responsible are possiby, although they are Christian, perhaps not entirely fiscally responsible.

By that, I don't mean they don't tithe or are bad with money, I mean most of us have bought in the the American culture of Materialism. Is this any different than supporting a game show such as "Deal or No Deal" which teaches the concept that money will make you happy or having an up to date cell or living in debt with your house, car, or credit cards? This is fiscally irresponsible as well. And just as sinful.

So, check yourself before you make a comment.

Secondly, if you can pass the check yourself test, then we are mandated by scripture to correct each other in love. Not in biting sarcasm, rash generalizations or other means. Frankly, this type of action prove mzchief's points.

Thirdly, I've worshipped God on the mission field in a two-by-four constructed shack. I've worshipped God in prisons. In contrast, I have been to several nice churches where I have not felt the presence of Christ. It's not the building, never has been, it's the people.

Fourthly, look at Solomon's temple. God seemed to appreciate that enough to send His presence there. (Imagine if Grace Fellowship was to line their walls with gold?) But it's the heart it was built with, not the materials.

In contrast, view the second temple where Jesus cast out the vendors. Again, it was the heart that mattered not the materials.

That's all I can think to say for now. Thanks.

To the sender of this item to the blog:

As a follower of Christ, I am so sorry that you felt brushed off by whoever answered the phone that day at GFC office. I do not know the circumstances but I am guessing that what the person meant by "We don't even have a building yet" was that we don't have a place yet to store any items.

I am further sorry that you did not receive a response after sending the list. The sad thing is that the answer probably was not a "No". Because they are limited in staff & growing very quickly & they really don't have their own place yet...most things have to be planned pretty far in advance so that they can logistically make everything work out OK. It is possible that it was something that they had put aside as a future ministry project for 2007.

Much of week is spent tending to the spriritual needs & individual needs that are coming up daily as we live in desperate times & there are many God sends our way to be ministered to.

However, I feel VERY convicted about the fact that our failure to follow up with you has damaged you spiritually & has hurt our witness as Christians in our dealing with you over the phone & now with many others in this blog because their imaginations are running wild over our motives. You see a couple of months ago they were asking for volunteers for office staff to help answer the phone & do basic administrative duties because they were running themselves ragged trying to keep up with everything. I know that some people agreed to help. The problem is I knew that I should offer to help do that too...at least one morning a week. However I LOVE working with Kids & thought "No I'd rather teach the kids in power zone that sounds so much more fun to me." I knew I was supposed to help in the office & I didn't. It has come to mind twice since then & I STILL put it off! Now I see through your experience that I was needed. I personally apologize to you & I am going to call the office today to volunteer to help because every single job in ministry is important.

Further, I see that God has placed a burden on your heart for the Women's Shelter. I praise him for that. You said that your project failed. I am sorry for that. Please continue to pray for the Shelter & trust the Lord to provide what is needed for each individual woman.

Also, Please pray for our church. As you can see, we are a young growing group of believers who love the Lord Jesus Christ & want to glorify him. Pray that our church will be what he wants it to be.

In the meantime, I have 2 drawers of Hotel shampoos, conditioners & soaps that I will take to the shelter today. I hope the other bloggers will do the same.

PS I assume that since you got that in the mail you were at least an attender of GFC. If you have found another church home, they can take you off of the list. Just let them know. If you haven't, you are still welcome to come worship with us.
Your sister in Christ

Obviously there are alot of passionate people here in Wise County for Christ, but I can assure you and I'm sure you know that he can take care of things quite well. Many GOOD people have made Grace Fellowship their church home.

This church is simply not for me. I don't agree with the methods they have used to raise funds for their church.

But who am I to judge?? I'll leave that one for the One it is intended.

Worship the Lord.....not the church.

Anonymous said...

2:15 - good points - that kind of worship isn't for me either.

The church got started because some were disgruntled with First Baptist Church in Bridgeport. Oh well, that great church has had folks split off before. So have other denominations.

So a new church is needing funds? What else is new. Churches have to pay bills just like everybody else and have furniture inside their buildings.

Though I'll never attend that church, I'm glad it has been built. There are many good people there whose hearts are right and who just want to worship in their own style.

I'm just glad a new church has been built instead of a strip club or a beer joint.

Anonymous said...

2:28, what a foolish thing to say. Beer stores and strip joints have helped more people see god than churches. They're also certainly more honest with their intentions, too.

And you know, we couldn't stand another strip joint in Wise County, seeing as we already have so many here in the first place.

The Bible, in "black and white" and right there on the sixth day...indicates that God made males and females. Not Adam, not Eve, but just people to go forth and populate the earth. Then later, God made Adam then Eve. Their son Cain killed their son Abel, so Cain had to wander off to find his wife. Which he did since there were people on earth well before Adam. Now, if a typical church can't even interpret that part correctly, how in the WORLD can it even begin to address anything else? Science and "religion" are more harmonious than either scientists or religious people care to realize.

I did many stupid things when I was younger. I still do stupid things. But thank God, I have been forgiven for those things and I will continue to be forgiven. The bars didn't teach me that!! The word of God that I learned in a CHURCh did.

I just wonder wonder why there weren't several line items to reimburse Bridgeport ISD and Paradise ISD taxpayers here at the end of the year for all they used in utilities/general wear & tear of the facilities? What would that total?

I think GFC has a purpose in Wise County. I just feel sorry for the families and friendships that have been needlessly pulled apart because of the way they have gone about building their members. God can heal the wounds. I hope to live long enough to see everyone happy with all again! This whole situation makes me sad!!

Anonymous said...

3:03 - it makes me sad too. Families have been pulled apart by that split. And kids from other churches have been "drawn" to the GFC because of the "excitement" there. Check out their ads. But when the excitement wanes what is left will really be the church.

My hope is that this congregation will result in good things for the church and Wise County.

Mzchief - maybe this split doesn't mean anything to you personally, but it hurt a lot of folks at First Baptist Church in Bridgeport. I admire those folks more than I can say.

This is a result of Rick Warren and his books. You know Purpose Driven. The problem is this group does not know what their purpose is. But, following a man that publicly supports the Democratic Party like Mr. Warren does is sad. They joined the Southern Baptist Convention but, it is in no way a Baptist Church. It does say in the last days there will be false prophets and teachings. Rick Warren, a Democrat that supports Gay Marriage and Abortion, but is followed by so many Christians that believe in neither. Very, very, Scary. Eyes need to be opened fast. I too have been to Grace Fellowship but prefer a Church that teaches and studies the BIBLE.

Has anyone but my sister and I put the connection together that these members are the same parents that are all moving their children to the Paradise ISD? Odd isn't it. Some Church congregations like this do well. Others, like their sister Church in Waco Texas during the 90's, do not. Are they collecting weapons on this Christmas Wish List as well? Will we see a movie about them someday?
Is it true that Hillary Clinton and John Kerry will be speaking at their first service in this new building? And what is with the tremendously high "swingers group" in this congregation?

I went through the split at First Baptist and it was very painful! I do know that most who left and most who stayed love God and felt with all their hearts that they were right. It is hard to forgive but the bible says, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the same measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?" Matthew 7:1-3

What exactly caused the "big split" in the first place? One post mentioned something about Cain seeking his wife. Was that the cause of the big split?

Over 20 years ago, our minister told about a church that split up over a belly button (BB). Apparently a painting at the church showed Adam & Eve with a belly button. Since they were created by God, neither one was delivered by a woman. The anti-belly buttoners argued that the BBs should be covered with paint. According to them, the only way to have a BB is from the umbilical cord. Hence, it was blasphemy to imply that they were born from a woman.

Wow, the idea of giving your greatest gift to Christ on HIS birthday. What a horrible idea. Drip, drip, drip. I understand why some of you are against this church. It has not lived up to your idea of what a church should be. But it is the type of place that hundreds of people want to find God every Sunday. And it is the type of place that encourages its members and attenders to take Christ out into the world to share and lift up other people. People like you. Some of you are dissapointed that the church didn't give to your organization. But are you sure? Are you sure that leading members of the church didn't give because of this churches influence and God's leading? Keep in mind that this church has exploded over the last three years to one of the top ten percent in numbers. That is a big strain on its time and its budget. It was able to do this because its members pulled together and volunteered their time and money to enable the church to do what it does. The money that it is gathering now will allow for desks and chairs, cabinets in the childrens areas, chairs that won't break after only five years or so, and without going further into debt to do it. When God told Moses to build the temple and the Ark in the desert, the people gave what they had to accomplish this, and they were happy to do it. Remember all of these things will get used by hundreds now, and potentially thousands later, each week. They have to stand up to constant use. And it didn't send out mass mailers to anyone, only those that are on its mailing list because they had given their address at some time. And anyone who doesn't won't be exiled from the church. They know that some can't and some aren't in a place where they feel they can or want to. If you don't like what they are doing, visit, get to know the people, and actually hear a message. You may hate it, or you might find that it isn't what you thought.

I do think it is intresting that the Pastor who posted here told us to "Shut up!" and named called. How very churchy of you. Do you treat your members this way or just strangers?

Also - I found it interesting that some of the people who were the biggest supporters of GF used the foulest lanuage - what a way to encourage people to come to your church.

I don't have a problem w/a church having nice things - however - just like newlyweds you don't have to get ALL of the fancy stuff before the wedding. You can wait, save your money, budget and establish your household over time. It isn't necessary to get everything up front.

The "investment in eternity" thing bugged me the most. God doesn't need my money and I don't like people infering I won't go to heaven if I don't pay up - OR my chances are greater if I do.

I am sure there are fine people at GF - I am sure their hearts are in the right place - however... it would be wise to auctually LISTEN to what outsiders thought of your church and learn from it - instead of bashing them and giving them more reason to dislike you.

the invest in eternity thing isnt setting a price on heaven, its saying help invest in the church, to set up the buildig, so it can continue ministering to the thousand+ that have attended so far in hopes that one more person will eventually be led to Christ

Anonymous said...

Reading these comments confirms more my feelings about churches these days. Funny...well..not funny.....but I have been a Christian and have attended a couple of churches in the Decatur area. I tithed what I could, when I could. I guess it wasn't enough. When I was in the midst of losing my life, my family, in a heartwrenching divorce that completey stripped my children of their security and happines....did ONE person from the churches I had attended ( and joined) call to offer help? A shoulder to lean on? Someone to just hear why my heart was breaking? NOOOOOOOOOO!! Not ONE... not a pastor...not a deacon.... NOT ONE!
It is pretty evident... churches these days want your money. If you have problems... they are "too busy" to help....possibly because they are out working on their "new" members. CHRISTIAN BEHAVIOR?? Most people in churches around here do NOT HAVE A CLUE of what that is. My faith is still strong, and I know the Lord will give us tests....but I know now that I will depend on only Him and the strenghth He provides.... don't look for help, concern, a loving caring hug..... from a fellow church mate... unless they are reaching into your pocket!
I will never ever feel the same about churches again. Think about that if you are a minister... deacon...elder.... CHRISTIAN in your place of worship! I'm sure there are more like me.... do you see them? Do you care?

Anonymous said...

4:24 said"I am sure there are fine people at GF - I am sure their hearts are in the right place - however... it would be wise to auctually LISTEN to what outsiders thought of your church and learn from it - instead of bashing them and giving them more reason to dislike you."
There are fine people at GFC, and thier hearts are in the right place, and they are listening. Mostly to GOD. This isn't an attempt to pilfer money from people. It is a heads up to say "these are our needs and this is what you can do to help." Why the hoopla? No one is trying to take money out of your pocket! They are very hurt by what is being said and they are praying for all of you. I doubt anyone from the church has bashed anyone here. They are not buying Gucci, they are buying quality so that it won't fall apart quickly and have to be repurchased. Think about the numbers of people that go every sunday now, and the hundred more that will start coming because they have a building. You people need to examine why you are really so against this and decide what you are argueing for.

Anonymous said...

I think you missed my point (and the above paragraph wasn't specifically about the money). My point was you have a PR problem for several reasons and you would be wise to listen to what other people were saying about your church - good and bad - in order to fix said PR problem. You can continue on your party line of "We are listening to God" (which I hope you are) but the unsaid part of that sentence is "and ignore everything else around us."

I am not saying you shouldn't be focused on God but if what you really want is to grow your church you would be wise to listen to what "Joe Public" hears about and thinks about your church - good and bad - so you CAN grow your church.

Also the "bashing part" was in response to the previous nasty postings from people claiming to be members of GF. If they are they were not very welcoming.

Anonymous said...

I would say that a 40,000 dollar sign for a church is NOT a NEED. That would be a WANT! There is a difference. One does not need all this fancy stuff to bring people to Jesus. In fact, for me it is just the opposite. I find Jesus in the most unexpected places. For example, in a young man's eyes dying from AIDS, a poverty stricken child, shabby looking homeless people, and the drug addict down the street. That is where I see Jesus and I know the reason I see HIM there is because HE wants to know what I am going to do to help these people...who are HIS people. For me... Christianity is not about big fancy buildings, signs, computers, landscaping, etc. These things look NOTHING like Christ. I always find Jesus among the suffering, ya know the type of people that society likes to judge and write off...just like they did to Jesus. Jesus was humble, meek, and unassuming. If people really are looking for Jesus...look inside yourself and then HE will lead you to the suffering people that he has called us to help.

By the way, I stopped going to GFC when the preacher gave a sermon on how to keep your husband faithful. He thought it was important that a woman put on make-up and fix herself up before her man got home and that this might keep him from straying. What a load of crap!!!!

Do these idiot preachers really think the MEN don't appear at times...smelly, ugly, disgusting, or tired and haggered? Any married couple that loves one another understands that is LIFE. And you love and STAY with one another through all aspects of Life! I'm afraid I would have either walked out in the middle of his idiot sermon (instruction to women) or would have had a very serious discussion with him after he was finished. Spoiled, 'my way' attitude, or not at all, no compromise. Former pastor had some integrity issues and couldn't keep peace with many of its members. There are lots of good people on both sides of this issue at FBC and GFC. There are different ways of reaching the lost even though both groups are Baptist. God is still in control, and will bring His final judgment on all His people.

I agree 8:17, a $40,000.00 dollar sign is way out there. One of those nice "put the letters in" blinking arrow signs would do just fine.

First of all, there is no section in that paper says "Jesus wants your money" or "pay us to get salvation" it's just your easily offended small mind come up with that idea when you see something good happening. Unlike your boring traditonal church that so stuck up in their old ways.

just be cause a church is getting bigger then others shouldn't be a reason to pick on.

last but not least, why do you care if they are asking for money or not. care about your own church.

Right on 3:21. GFC has been the most amazing thing that Ive ever been a part of. The things they are doing may require more money than a church who hasnt changed in 50 years but thats what is needed. GFC has seen more people saved in 3 yrs than most churches will in there entire existence. If the mail out bothers you so much then dont give your money, dont get on a blogging site and talk trash...

Maybe those 4 or 5 families realized that a group of leaders in a church that was full of hypocrits ran a good man out of town because a little positive change was happening.

3:21 - likely a lot of mainline churches are jealous over the growth of this GFC- at least numerically. Numbers are always impressive, but they don't necessarily determine the success of a church fellowship group.

And 3:21 - the boring and traditional churches that you refer to are doing God's work too. Some of them are just a little less vocal about it.

3:21PM , I apologize for interpreting "invest in eternity", "investment in things eternal", and "give our greatest gift to Jesus this Christmas" as "Jesus wants your money" or "pay us to get salvation". Maybe your dear pastor should invest in some professional marketing assistance, to make sure his next little mailer doesn't get misinterpreted by the masses. Believe me, we will be watching for the next one.

And that sign thing - $40K? Don't you have some stone mason members who would just do it for free? There's lots of rocks just laying around Wise County that ya'll could go spend a Sunday afternoon gathering up.

Maybe you can convince Jesus himself to come stand at the roadside, beckoning people to just drive right up to your church. I am sure that would be much more impressive than some old forty-thousand dollar sign.

Honestly, if I believed in heaven, which I don't, I would prefer being in hell, which I don't believe in either. It would be my own personal hell to be in heaven with the likes of some of you sheeple.

3:28 PM: Do you not think GFC has its share of hypocrits? Come on now, the church is made of people, not saints! I've seen those people running around with those shirts on, and they're not perfect!

3:21 & 3:25 Any church asking for money the way GFC only hurts all churches. It turns people off. Whatever happened to just "good ole preaching and outreach programs that in turn causes growth and stabilty. Please refocus your direction on how to grow your church and we'll all prayer for your success in reaching the lost. And as for the Hypocrits, aren't we all a little bit. Thank God for sending Jesus to save a sinner like me.

It is very sad that so much hate is stirred up by this mail out. I am somewhat new to the area. I also attend First Baptist Bridgeport.
I will be the first to say that the split that resulted in the formation of GFC was bad and hurt people on both sides. The hate that has risen as a result of this mail out is damaging to the cause of Christ.
It takes money to build and maintain churches. First Baptist Euless which no one can complain about has a 16,000,000.00 a year budget.
Do one of two things pray for the church or pray against the church what ever you are comfortable with, but quit spreading so much trash. God will be done.

if you arent apart of those 4 or 5 families, you have no right to say what their "agenda" was...thats the problem with this whole post...and anybody that knows barry personally knows that he doesnt even believe half the things he posts on here, he says something to get people to react, he has for a long time....in an area like this thats stuck in their ways, of course barry's gonna take a cheap shot @ the only different church around here...and he got what he wanted, this is the biggest post he's ever had on here, and a lot of people have been hurt through this whole deal.....hats off barry, you really did it this time

After reviewing your comments, I would like to add that I have attended Grace and I know the people there. Alot of nice people attend Grace, but that doesn't mean that the churches mission and the people that attend are on the same page. First of all you can't buy into eternity so they shouldn't use that as a promotion, but ultimately they are the stewards of whatever money that is donated. God will hold them all accountable and its really not up to us to pass judgement. God knows what is in everyones heart and it is his money and his building and his furniture, etc. Don't worry about them, God says in Matthew 6:34 Do not worry about tommorow, it will worry on its own. Instead of being angry, just ask God to bless them so that they may be good stewards of what he has so genereously given to them.
