Interesting Analysis

The following was pulled from the Comments (under the Elmo toy) and reposted her for your assessment: The WCM reports that the Wise County Regional Hospital claims a $300 million annual economic impact on Wise County. Are they crazy? Based on a population of about 50,000 people, that's $6,000 better off every man, woman, child, illegal, and inmate should be each year. Or about $20,000 to $25,000 for every single family, based on average family size. In other words, the hospital is claiming it accounts for more than half of all income in the county. That's strange, thought hospitals were things that local people paid into, and not things that cut checks for $20,000 each year to every family in the county. Economic impact studies are notorious for overmultiplying, overestimating, and counting every dollar even if the dollars come from the local area.

Surely, that is a typo. Remember the 20,000 dogs episode? Surely, they meant 3 million. LOL

They are way under staffed at the new hospital. Most RN's I know don't want to set foot in that place. Bad reputation

Some one please explain the relationship of Elmo to WCRH to me.

It must be something about WCRH being a joke, based on what Greta said, since the RN's she knows won't set foot in the place.

Just recently, one of my dear friends said similar things after he took his brother to WCRH, who, unbeknownst to us, was dying from cancer. WCRH "couldn't find anything wrong with him". After multiple MRIs and whatever - they said he had "a social problem". Sadly the guy I'm speaking about passed away a couple of weeks ago.

Maybe those numbers are right. I had an outpatient procedure done there several months ago. The hospital fee only not including doctor, anesthesia, blood work, etc. for a 1 hour procedure was 5500. That same procedure costs 2200 at Harris. That hospital is very expensive.

greta said...

How else are they going to pay for their new building? They have to charge outrageous amounts to cover the costs.

It's really sad about WCRH. I think all "County" hospitals get a bad rap. But, there have been too many errors made in WCRH. Recently, some doctors in Decatur have chosen elsewhere to perform their services.

Bridgeport is building a new hospital. And, it's looking really good right now.

At business school they teach that there is a multiplier effect when a dollar is spent. If I go to Sweetie Pies my $15 goes to pay overhead (utilities, debt service, advertising, etc.) labor (staff and management) supplies (meat market, food suppliers, etc.)
These respective companies and individuals start the process over again (they pay their bills, and so on) and it ripples through the economy several times. What they are suggesting is the revenue at the hospital impacts this community by that much when all of the ripples finally land. To make such an estimate they make a lot of assumptions. (how much my RN pay check is spent locally versus at the mall or Billy Bob's.) I doubt the validity of the figure but that is how they get there. they are not suggest that the average WC person spends $6,000.00 per year per person on health care.

Such estimates are usually made when an entity is trying to borrow money or pass a revenue tax.

I heard rumor at one time WCRH was being bought out by Baylor...Anyone heard if this might be true?

greta2424, You must reside west of the Big Sandy. We have a great hospital. I, my family, my wife's family, and a host of people I know have had great success using the Decatur doctors and WRMS (Wise Regional Medical System). They have hired 100 new employees since they moved to the new building and plan to hire more. They now have a cancer center and lots of services that you and I couldn't pronounce much less spell. The hospital truly is a major economic engine in this community and in the county as well. We should all be proud of it, I know I am. I really doubt Bridgeport will be building much of a hospital. I have been hearing about that one for years and I doubt they have the funding. I see the bricks, mortor, docs, and nurses here. Show me something concrete about the Bridgeport deal and then I will listen. Rumor means very little goofy-greta.

greta said...

Just so you know, they have received the funding.

3:37; that is probably their escape plan if they default on their huge loan. Unfortunately for the taxpayers in Decatur, I doubt Baylor will pay top dollar for a hospital building that is too big and too expensive. That means any outstanding debt that Wise Regional owns falls back on the hospital district taxpayers, which from what I understand is the city of Decatur.

And I agree with you Barry, Wise Regional usually over-hypes their importance. And the Messenger goes right along with them. I guess when the Messenger gets literally millions of dollars in advertising over the past few years from the hospital, they will go along with what ever the hospital feeds them. Oh and the owner of the newspaper sits on the hospital board of directors. Does anyone else find that to be a conflict of interest?

See what you learn working for the hospital.

4:03: How condesending. (anything or anybody who exists to west must be inferior and worthless). "I really doubt Bridgeport will be building much of a hospital" How do you know? Seen the plans? Have any first hand knowledge? Or is it just your opinion.

Heck. they don't even have a Wal-Mart over there in little old Bridgeport. Their not sophisticated like we are over here.

Prediction: The Bridgeport hospital will open and neither will succeed. Know why. Attitudes like yours.

Well, I am so glad that WR has a cancer center now. Maybe they can diagnose someone who actually has cancer (2:35). Isn't cancer, #2 on deaths?

There are several companies that pay the Messenger well for ads. That's why some important issues never become published. Afterall, don't strike the hand that feeds you. Ug, I'm getting old.

Anonymous said...

If you are old like me you know that Bridgeport has always had a better hospital than Decatur....Dr's Bryant, Huddleston, and Hunter....for years...best hospital around....

I have lived around, and in Wise County for 40 years. If I didn't know personally, several incidents that have happened in Decatur, it would be my hospital. I choose to go outside of Wise. If Bridgeport turns out to be something, then so be it. I want a choice.

I would rather go outside the county for all hospital issues. My dad was at Wise Regional for a week with pain that was "probably gall stones" per the doctor, but they wouldn't release him because his blood pressure was dangerously high. After a week of IV medication, they were able to get his blood pressure down to "still too high, but we'll go ahead and let you go home and try you on a pill form of medication". He died 36 hours after being released from an aneurism of the aorta, which he was showing the classic symptoms for. The hospital never tried to find out WHY his blood pressure was too high. Personally, until I stop hearing horror stories because of incompetence and missed diagnosis, I will go elsewhere.

greta, Do you suppose that just maybe those Doctors who are leaving the county are doing it for thier own selfish reasons. The only reason to make a Wise county resident drive to the city for surgery is GREED. Ask your traveling doctors if they own any equipment, buildings or anything else there. Enjoy your drive to Fort Worth or South Lake.....the traffic is geat, and your doctor gets to make more money.

ANON 8:39 If a doctor chooses to leave then something must be wrong. Greed? No - Smart.

I travel to save my life.

The $300 million MUST be the true because after all, the information came from The honorable Stephen Wren, esq.

He is an upstanding pillar of the community.

He is a deacon at the First Baptist Church.

He is a millionaire.

He is an attorney who would sell his own mother for money.

Do you see any reason to not trust every word that comes from his mouth?

I am beginning to doubt all of the medical services here in Wise County. My wife's gynecologist is good, our doctor is good, but the pediatrics staff and hospital are terrible.

Our pediatrician's front office is full of surly women that treat you like a leper. Once you get past the trolls the actual medical staff is good.

As for the hospital, my wife has stopped going. I will preface this by saying the delivery unit is stellar, I despised St. Paul and Baylor Irving when our first two children were delivered at those two hospitals. I felt like a criminal. WRHS was infinitely better during the delivery of our two boys.

My last experience with the emergency department at WRHS was atrocious. My two year old son broke his collar bone. I don't care about the tiny "fast track" waiting room they had, it was the attitude of the attending physician was downright rude. The sheer fact that he had to touch my son while diagnosing him was against his very being according to his face. I realize they are "independent contractors" but I view that as a cop-out. I have worked as a contractor, and the company that purchased my services could fire me if my performance or demeanor was poor. But hey, it pays for his Porsche so he puts up with treating the crotchfruit.

Then comes all the looks from the emergency room staff. I must have beaten or tossed him down a flight of stairs and broken his bone myself.

And if Baylor is indeed looking to buy WRHS, it will cement my position of never using a single service the hospital offers. My wife had a miscarriage at Baylor Grapevine. They treated her like an animal. They made her wait standing up while she was doubled-over with labor pains. Then in an actual room, I had to tend to her while the nurses ignored her. They did poke their head in to tell me to keep her quiet. The gall of somebody in pain making noise in an emergency room.

You must be one gullible gal. I've heard that Bridgeport has received the funding for their hospital more times than I can count. Quit screaming about the labor pains Greta, show me the baby. It just doesn't add up.

FYI, my wife and I recently had our first child at WRHS. I was very pleased with our service and believe that the staff performed an excellent job. I have been to others hospitals when friends and close family had their children at other hosiptals (all in DFW area)and WRHS labor and delivery beat the other guys hands down. For any other issues at WRHS I cannot speak for. One more thing, Bridgeport will get their hospital and I suspect that the citizens of Wise County will have a choice in hospital care within the next couple of years.

I hope the hospital does become a top notch facility like Harris.

But they aren't there yet, especially in matters of communication.

Talk around Bridgeport is that they want a hospital just to compete with Decatur.

Good reason?

Or Big Sandy again?

zzzzzzzzz

How many specialist will the Family practice, Doctor owned Bridgeport Hospital have? 1 or 2 (investors) Great idea...they don't want competition from specialist, so they build their own hospital. Jacks of all trades, masters of none.

Will they accept all patients to their private hosital, even medicare patients or patients with no insurance?

Of cousre the answer is No! What all these cry babies(gretas) don't realize is, a private, for profit hopital can pick and choose its patients. If the FP decides His/hers insurance isnt good enough they ship your ass away..Hooooray, and they don't want MEDICARE, so your parents and Grandparents are UNWANTED!!!!!

trappedinchico and anon 8:36: I am so sorry to hear about the terrible experiences you and your families have had in the healthcare setting. As a student of a healthcare profession, it is stressed over and over to us that we are patient advocates, and it is our job to make sure all of our patient's needs are taken care of. The negligence you both witnessed is an embarassment for the healthcare community.

I too have been a patient at WRHS, and have had mixed experiences. They do an awesome job. As far as my ER experiences go, there is room for improvement. Once, I was bleeding profusely. It was enough that (with my medical background) I was pretty worried about the amount of blood loss. I was left sitting in a room BY MYSELF for an hour, listening to the dr and nurses chit chat right outside the door. Another time, my son was in the ER for a head injury. The doctor treated me like I was stupid when I talked to her. The fast track is nice for less sever injuries though.

Knowing what I know about the surgeons and the med/surg unit, I would insist that I or my family be transported to another facility if illness or injury required those kind of services though.

I decided a long time ago I really did not want to be associated professionally with the current WRHS. Maybe in the future, but right now working there does not appeal to me at all.

oops....that was supposed to say the L&D unit does an awesome job.

9:02, you are becoming a tad bit slanderous. If you are going to use names, then don't be a coward and put your name on your post! You don't know what you're talking about!

Anonymous said...

8:58 I do not agree with all that 9:02 said but I did see the numbers associated with a report from Wren to the hospital board. Is that not true?

I also think it funny that you chastise anonymous postings while you are posting anonymously.
