Maybe They Should Change The Name To "Redneck Settlement"

"White Settlement residents turned out in record numbers Tuesday to overwhelmingly defeat a proposal to change their city’s name to West Settlement and seven other proposed city charter amendments. Of the 2,607 residents who voted, 91.5 percent opposed the proposal. The final, unofficial totals showed 2,388 voting against the measure, with 219 voting for the name change." Star-Telegram Story here.

As I understand the background on how White Settlement received its name, it was named after someone with the last name of White. Has nothing to do with race. All this political correctness crap is making me sick. Just like everyone having a cow about schools and teams having Native Indian names for mascots. Like it was done to be malicious. Let's lighten up people.

something for the "political correct" to gripe about. I guess the settlers in Greenville were green. Get a life people.

White Settlement's name does not come from a person's name. It actually is racially based. There was a group of settlers back in the 1800s who stopped and made their homes there. The area was for all practical purposes, completely surrounded by the land of several Native American tribes. Thus the name, White Settlement.

Who cares? I bet Ft Worth campagned against the name change just so they would not have to change all the White Settlement Rd. signs. (Can you imagine driving down WEST Settlememnt Rd.?)

Who cares about political correctness is right!! All this hoopla over nothing. Good gosh, don't these folks have jobs to go to?

Feel the same way about gays/lesbians. Live your lives your own way and quit stirring things up. It's not going to change minds anyway.

Stupidity rather than common sense seems to be rampant in this country!

No....as said above, this was just a case of incredibly silly political correctness. SO many other things to worry about.....glad the Prop was voted down. It was stupid.

just think of all the taxpayers money wawted on printing ballots for this and yes the name is race based but when the name came to be it was when the native americans were surounding the settlement they arent complaining. as i recall i didnt see any one other than white people complaining about this like the mayor

We should consider changing the name of Washington D.C. because after all George Washington was a slave owner and it can't be good to name a town after a former Slave Owner. How about Chrysler Corporation naming a car "Cherokee". How degrading to that proud native american nation!

I agree with anon 8:51 with the common sense. I don't know what's happened to people. Don't they have bigger things to worry about like cancer and death, etc.? One of these days will I no longer be allowed to eat "white" american cheese on "white" bread wearing my little "black" dress?

Don't forget about the "White House" in D.C. and Brownsville,Texas. How insensitive!

As a matter of fact, my son came home singing, "One, Little Two, Little Three, Native Americans, Four, Little Five......" today. I corrected him, saying, "Nah, it's 'Little Indians!'" He said that at school they're supposed to say the former. I told my kids that it's a stupid example of political correctness.

My kids asked what that meant. I told them, "It's when grown ups act like crybabies and say 'that's not fair' about every stupid little thing."

Makes me crazy....I say, "Rock on, White Settlement!"

Who cares about the name of the town??? Has anyone driven through White Settlement lately??? It's pretty trashy.

They should've requested to be renamed to White-Trash Settlement. A little more fitting.
