Random Friday Morning Thoughts

  • Weird case in a north Fort Worth neighborhood yesterday afternoon where a cop "ride along" got out of the cop car to chase burglary suspects only to have a neighbor come to his aid and shoot the suspects.  The police spokesman said, "What we have here is a mess." Yeah, you sure do.
  • Not far away, over on 377 in Keller, a cop was fatally shooting a shoplifting suspect in, of all places, Kohl's.
  • "McAllen, Texas (AP) - Three people were found wounded, two fatally, in a vehicle that was fired upon by a Texas state trooper in a helicopter." Whoa!!! How is this story not at the top of the news?
  • What's with all the trigger happy police this year?
  • I don't know if it is the "perfect storm" but to name it "Frankenstorm," as it is predicted to hit the northeast on Halloween week, is pretty clever.
  • Had the Neighbor Cat bust through a window screen to try and get at the Family Cat yesterday evening. Chaos ensued.
  • Saw a guy yell at a lady for cutting him off at a gas pump at 287/51 in Decatur. I doubt if I'd ever get that worked up over a couple of minutes.
  • The Battle of the Big Sandy doesn't feel like much of a battle this year.
  • I wonder if there are any time capsules buried in Wise County that were supposed to be dug up by now but were simply forgotten about.
  • I've got to go back to the doctor today to confirm my high blood sugar. Some type of glucose test? I'm not sure I like the way this is sounding.
  • But I'm having to "fast". It's not exactly 40 days and 40 nights, but I don't like it.
  • Dallas is only a 1.5 point underdog against the Giants? That's a lock bet for the Giants, isn't it?

do you intend to sue neighbor cat, or was family cat to blame?

Re the Fort Worth suspects that were shot--Hey, the right people got shot and they deserved it--stupid is, stupid does, etc. (But the ride-along policy needs to be--don't get into the chase, dude!)

The Kohl shooting--dude asked for it--stupid is, stupid does, etc. AGAIN

That's a very bold accusation, calling a cop trigger happy. Can you prove that?

Replace food with prayer. Maybe you can pray to your god "Xina the Teenage Warrior Goddess Witch of the Trigger Happy PO-PO's"

Shame on you Decatur, your vandalism has shown your true sportsmanship. Bridgeport has been working to "Paint the Town Maroon" the past 2 weeks. YOU came over last night and defaced several sign and even a widow's yard.
I am from Decatur and moved to Bridgeport, and I am ashamed to even say I am from the East side.
Coach Story needs to DISCIPLINE those players involved and show Bridgeport HE wont allow that behavior from his team: Coach Henson would.
Step Up Decatur and do what is right!

were there any OblameO voters involved? i sure hope so..

Stupid trigger happy cop in Keller. He should be reprimanded and prosecuted for killing that poor innocent Trayvon-type-friendly kid. How dare he try to protect himself or the customers around him in that racist, non-shoplifting-friendly store.

Its a darn good thing there were no trigger happy police to stop that NY nanny from stabbing and killing those kids.

Trigger Happy Police?

I would suppose its because they are just trying to make it through a day without being killed. Something that a small town lawyer wound not know that much about.

Hurricane Sandy knocks out Obama fund raiser in Florida.

Thank you Sandy and remember,it's not nice to fool Mother Nature.

When the economy goes sour, there is more crime.

More crime = more criminals willing to do whatever it takes to get away = more dangerous situations = more criminals shot while trying to be OG's.

Back in my high school days, any vandalism going on was by students not involved in athletics.

Not sure about the FTW policy, but I know for a fact that Wise County does not allow you to get involved unless the officer specifically asks you to do so. Did a ride-along several times with a friend who is a Wise County Deputy and he would tell me to stay in the car on calls unless he specifically told me that I could get out.

Also, the paperwork you signed stated the same thing. Sounds like someone screwed up on this.

When did law enforcement become above reproach?

For a bunch of Law and Order types, a lot of commenters on here seem fine with abolishing the judicial system.

Has the presumption of innocence been replaced with shoot first and don't even bother asking questions later?

You do realize that the minimum requirement to be a police officer is that you are a college drop out, and have never been caught doing anything illegal.

They are average citizens who passed a licensing exam. That should be enough to not have to hold them to any kind of standard I guess.

Anonymous said...

@8:46 Do you have proof of players/team being involved? Could it possibly be just students with idle time on their hands?

Does deface = toilet paper?

The perfect storm will always be "Mariah". Hurricanes were given girls names after the book "Storm" by George Rippey Stewart was published in the early 1940s. Then someone decided we had to be socially correct and call it "Sandy" rather than "Sandi".

With Sandy comming ashore we will need to borrow more money from China,

Would anyone be bold enough to comment on what Bridgeport students "allegedly" did to Decatur's campus this week? Also, would anyone like to comment on why "allegedly" Bridgeport couldn't put together enough players for the 9th Grade football game last night? What I have heard is hearsay, so I'd like some factual information.

Some of the high school students were not at the pep rally because of behavior during previous pep rally's. WTG Mrs. Sturdivant for making and sticking to this decision.

9:30

Students that toilet paper players/cheerleaders homes and the High School tree, have permission to do such. Was permission given for Decatur to vandalize Bridgeport?

9:31
They are upset because of the time and money that Decatur wasted!

Decatur tried to take our PRIDE, unfortunately it did not work.

Are you a cop? Have you applied to be an officer in the last 10 years? By your ignorant statement, I would have to say...NOPE.

Let me let you in on a little secret. Any PD in the metroplex that I have been associated with, or applied for, require an applicant to pass a psych evaluation, and a polygraph test. Some require a 4 year college degree, most require some college credit. Passing certification is not the standard for employment, it is only one of many requirements.

I bet you couldn't even fill out the application properly, let alone make it through to take the exam.

Anonymous said...

The reason the Ft Worth cops have ride-alongs is so they will have a drinking buddy!

Anonymous said...

What Mrs. Sturdivant did was wrong. She needs to go. She punished some good kids for no reason. Punish the bad kids, not the good kids. And if the H.S. kids are really that bad, she needs to do more than ban them from pep rally's. She only cares about the "in crowd"!

Anonymous said...

10:34
So all the 9th and 10th graders had bad behavior?

What a Joke! The school needs to worry about their Math teacher that can't teach Math!

Just for the sake of discussion, if a teacher did something wrong would you punish all the teachers?
I didn't think so.

Bridgeport ISD Needs to clean house, our kids and out town deserve better than this!

Anonymous said...

10:34 ~ Yes Sturdivant is good at sticking by HER decisions, as long as it doesn't affect certain kids! So the kids who actually started the problem at the pep rally were able to go this week and the Freshman/Sophmores sit in class wondering why they were being punished? And that cheerleader that was kicked off the team a couple of years ago wonders why the coaches kid cheers this year even after getting a minor in possession charge? Just a few of the reasons why this school has gone down hill the last 4 years!

Anonymous said...

Not that it matters but that bet on the Giants looks like a lock to me. Da Cowboys are a name only - they are quite mediocre but capable of winning 6 to 8 games.
I'm wondering if Jason Garrett's days are numbered. Jerry always needs a scapegoat to cover his own screw-ups.

I'm so glad that parents and the community are trying to show the Bridgeport students that we still stand behind them, even if the Administrators don't!!!!!

I heard that Bridgeport did not have a freshman team is because they had to many fail so they had to move them up to JV. Bport JV still got beat up pretty bad

@ 10:35 aka Anonymous Poster,

I mentioned mimimum requirements, you must have left your reading glasses next to your half cocked weapon....

Some college credit but no degree = drop out.

The polygraph you mentioned, that was addressed when I said you couldn't have been caught...

Psych eval, get friggin serious,

Don't let my comments make you feel insecure or that your chosen profession is worth less than you thought.

I was merely opining that law enforcement isn't as omnipotent as they think themselves to be and that the benefit of the doubt belongs to the citizens whom you purport to serve.

My college degree and I have secured a career in another line of work.

I will now cry about what you said at the end of your comment. You are right, filling out an application and succeeding on a multiple choice examination are skill sets way beyond anything I possess.

You zinged me (sigh)

The glucose test isn't too bad. They give you a sugary drink and then wait a specific amount of time and then do a blood draw.

No big deal for a tough guy like yourself. I recommend you make some vampire comments during the blood draw since we are close to Halloween.

I recommend the orange flavored drink, btw.

This is Hensons 20th Battle of Big Sandy,, In his first he made a statement and beat decatur 56-6.. and it would have been worst, but he pulled out C.Rivera,J.DeLuna,D,Jones, and G.Reynolds,,, The whole starting backfield the entire 4th quarter... i was a senior in Bridgeport and we could have scored 100pts that night, but Coach called off the dogs..Decatur had no chance that night!!!

We live in a world where cops break the rules they're supposed to enforce. Just 15min ago I was behind a WC Sherrifs car that was blabbing on the phone thru TWO school zones, and turned onto 730 south. Yeah I saw you, lady!

E. All of the above

Wonder if any of the "mess" the FW police are in due to the shooting will be attributed to the person who decided to use a baseball bat to break into a house.

Anonymous said...

Agree with 8:41.

I think there's less to the ride along story than it's being made out to be. The ride along may not have totally followed policy, but he didn't shoot anybody, and it will be up to the investigation to determine if his actions actually exacerbated the situation. Whether the resident believed he was a detective or a citizen is immaterial if his actions were in defense of the man's life.

The Kohl's shooting 'trigger happy'? Seriously? It's well-established that Kohl's has excellent video surveillance and vigorously prosecutes shoplifting, so, points off for the would-be thief picking the wrong target.

And you don't have to be smarter than a second grader to know that trying to grab a cop's gun - while threatening to kill said cop - will likely end badly.
