Random Tuesday Morning Thoughts

  • 9/11 snuck up on me this year. I didn't even realize it until yesterday. And eleven years has raced by.
  • That 9/11 Flight Crew Memorial  on Texas Trail in Grapevine is in a strange place. (Both to be in Texas and, since it is, not to be in the airport.)
  • I really want to see the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan.
  • If you haven't seen United 93, you need to.
  • Flying on Southwest this weekend reminded me how the attitudes of the flight attendants of Southwest and American are polar opposites.
  • Forgot to mention that I bought the LSU tickets on Stubhub at not so cheap of a price. Once there, I was stunned to see the number of tickets for sale by ordinary folks outside the stadium. These weren't scalpers -- just ordinary folks trying to unload them. One lady who was in line to go into the stadium held up one ticket and yelled "$5".
  • I read an old Texas Monthly article on the UT Tower Shooting. I didn't realize that the cops who initially responded were only armed with pistols and shotguns so many college kids went and got their rifles. They unloaded on the tower to keep Charles Whitman from having free reign.
  • That whole episode, including the ending, would make a fantastic movie. (A TV movie was made of it in the 1970s.)
  • Here's a youtube clip of the first Austin "breaking news" television announcement.
  • How in the world can a Dallas cop end up dead by cleaning his gun?
  • I'm a couple of days late on this, but that story on the guy in Dallas who killed the 16 year old girl who was about to testify against him in a sexual assault case is shocking.
  • According to the U.S. Census, 1 in 4 Wise Countians don't have health insurance
  • Heard there was something going down about an Erath sheriff's deputy to be charged with a sexual assault of another sheriff's office employee, but I haven't seen anything about it in the news.
  • I drove through the construction at FM 51 and 114 the other day. What a mess.
  • Speaking of, has anyone driven 114 out of Grapevine towards the airport and either looked for signs to go up to 635 or into the airport. Whichever way you want to go, I promise you'll be routed in the opposite direction.
  • Griffining is the new Tebowing.
  • Anyone know who was in the wreck that leads the Update this morning?

As the investigation into accusations against a former Erath County sheriff's captain continues, the Empire-Tribune has discovered more details about the case.

According to documents obtained by the E-T, Terrell Dickerson, 64, who was arrested and charged with sexual assault, has been accused by a female employee at the Erath County Sheriff's Office of rape. Case reports provided by Wise County (where Dickerson was charged) state that the victim allegedly reported the incident to a supervisor with the department and Texas Ranger James Holland was instructed to investigate

One in four in Wise County do not pay for a health care policy and why is that? Are they so poor they can not afford it? Or do they choose to have other things like a cell phone, a truck or buy clothes? Are they living with the father of their children and let Medicaid pay for their hospital bills? Would like more information on why they are being covered by Medicaid (us the taxpayers)

The signs on SH114 in the Southlake/Grapevine area demonstrate total incompetence.

If you're covered by Medicaid, wouldn't that mean you "have insurance?"

I take the stat to mean that 1 in 4 Wise Countians are not covered by any insurance, private or otherwise. Am I reading that wrong?

"According to the U.S. Census, 1 in 4 Wise Countians don't have health insurance." Why do we not read or hear of more Wise Countians dying because they don't have health insurance?

Anonymous said...

The way I read it, the map shows people with NO health insurance coverage. I would count Medicaid as health insurance. So that's 1 in 4 with no coverage at all, meaning when they do access medical care they either pay it all themselves (statistically less likely), they pay part of it and default on the rest (driving up costs for all of us), or they don't pay at all (again, with the burden carried by those who have insurance and/or the taxpayer).

But even if a significant portion is on Medicaid, aren't we all paying for that anyway? Either way, seems like the taxpayer and people who have insurance are screwed.

In the words of someone I knew many years ago, poor people have poor ways. Generalizations that the uninsured do so at the taxpayers expense are largely true. While liberals will trot out some unfortunate soul as the norm of the unisured, they will never acknowledge the obese smoker with an iPhone and cable TV as the true norm.

9:25 If the ones without insurance or not married to the fathers of their children, I would like more information to see if they are on medicaid (taxpayers pay for medicaid) I am assuming that more without insurance are on medicaid than those who are paying for all their medical expenses. Don't know but by observation on those in the waiting room at the clinic, that most are getting medicaid, not paying for their office visits out of pocket!!!

1) A lot of reasons. Each individual has his/her own issues as to why. We should not paint with a broad brush without supporting statistics.

2) For some, the answer is "yes".

3) For some, probably "yes". However purchasing clothing for a family isn't necessarily an incorrect choice. Transportation may be considered a necessity for some. It's sometimes tough to get/keep a job without transportation. A cell phone may be a necessity as well, given today's workplace. Or at least these things may be important enough to make not having one a significant hardship, especially for those that believe they will be able to work and climb out of their poverty or get a job that will provide health insurance in the future.

4) I must assume that you are attempting to target single parents getting Medicaid for children. If the custodial parent lives with the other parent, Medicaid is typically not available. In most cases, that is considered fraud and may be prosecuted. A non-custodial parent in many instances is required to provide health insurance and/or reimburse the State for past Medicaid expenditures. Additionally, there is a statutory time limit for how long some children may receive Medicaid.

5) As another commenter pointed out, you are making a big (and likely incorrect) assumption in thinking that all of those without health insurance are covered by Medicaid. Medicaid is typically available to children and elderly, both of whom must meet a very low income level to qualify.

FYI, the State also pursues the property (if any) of a Decedent's Estate to reimburse funds expended by Medicaid to benefit the elderly.

HOT PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION OPINION:

If you actually work for a living, you're perpetually screwed by the special interest groups. Now get back to work, the Messkins, and Niggra's are hungry!

Regarding the Flight Crew memorial: About 90% of the memorial was paid by the APA (American Airlines Pilots Association). Originally they wanted it in NYC. There was a LOT of redtape and it was going to be veryexpensive for the land. (Dealing with those yankees). Grapevine was very receptive to the idea and the land was donated by the owner of the shopping strip.

Anonymous said...

1 in 4 in Wise County don't have health insurance? Does it go on to explain why? Maybe because they CHOOSE NOT to buy it! They would rather buy other items instead. I know MANY people in Wise County that have made the choice.

Anonymous said...

Now it appears some are very informed on Medicaid coverage; therefore, those covered by Medicaid are not included in the Census??? So how much does it cost to be covered by Medicaid? How much co-pay and is it mandatory to pay for the co-pay to get an office visit? I still assume the census on the 1 of 4, was private health care insurance or Medicare. Medicaid is the safety net for all who do not have health insurance who are too poor to pay!

Are you telling us that you got 9/11'd regarding 9/11? Is that what you're saying?? (Citing Pearl Harbor would have worked as well)

A careless officer cleaning his weapon is no different than a careless civilian cleaning a weapon. Remember a few years back when an officer was giving a safety presentation (at a school, I think) and shot himself when his weapon discharged?
A firearm is a harsh mistress. It will take you down if you don't show it the proper respect

Many working people do not have health insurance, the companies do not offer it.
And, many pay as they go, Sometimes it takes a long time to pay hospital bills though.
Many of those uninsured do not go to doctors or hospitals.
In most cases, cell phones are cheaper than landlines. Many have limited minutes.

Anonymous said...

So if I pay for someone's insurance, welfare, and lone star card (because they choose NOT to work)- Is there any way I claim them on my tax return? Hell, I can't even afford to have kids of my own, I'm too busy paying the way for others!

Anonymous said...

"How in the world can a Dallas cop end up dead by cleaning his gun? "

He didn't numbskull. Most likely scenario is he wanted to kill himself, but didn't want to shame his family/ruin his reputation and/or there was suicide clause in his life insurance policy specifying a reduced pay out for suicide.

So he lays out the cleaning supplies then... KERBLEWY!

Second oldest cop trick in the book.

Liberal Weenie Larry, How many more people would Whitman have been able to kill if the students hadn't been able to unload on the tower? Do you protect your family with a cell phone that is able to call 911? I'm sure your family feels well protected having you as the father figure. There's a rumor there was a tumor.

Oh yeah.. 9-11.. I forgot

9/11 has lost pretty much all meaning for me because it was so politicized. It served as the basis for the lies that followed when we invaded Iraq, and both parties failed miserably in protecting our rights with the passage of the Patriot Act. Well, the Democrats showed no spine and failed, the Republicans got the police state they've always wanted.

However--if you go to NYC, there are two things you have to do at night. One is see the WTC memorial at night. In the winter is even better, but definitely at night. The second is the Chrysler building--no lines, zip straight to the top. And the city is prettier at night anyway.

Every cop I know at some time had an accidental discharge. Pretty simple. Your memory tells you that you removed the bullet from the chamber and, guess what, you was wrong. NEVER trust your memory on this one. Check the chamber every time you pick the thing up.

10:50, I can guarantee you after working in the grocery business for 10 years that 1 in 4 Lone Star card users are minorities in Wise County. The other 3 out of 4 are good ol' Republican voting, Obama hatin', white folk milking that system. They're also buying Doritos, Blue Bell and Red Bull instead of flour, eggs and hamburger.

It's not the color of their skin, it's the depth of their character. Let's just say it's mighty shallow in Wise County.
