Random Friday Morning Thoughts


  • New this morning: The unemployment rate drops to 8.1%.  I wonder if it will get to 7.9% with 60 days to go before the presidential election.
  • I proclaimed a highway between Grapevine and Frisco the "greatest" in North Texas on Monday. Yesterday, its service road claimed a motorcycle death.
  • Florida St. has opened as a 70.5 favorite over Savannah State -- the largest spread in NCAA history. There has to be widespread corruption in games like this -- there is no question that Florida State could cover if they wanted to. So what if a coach tells a buddy, "I'd go to Vegas on this one."
  • A personal injury lawyer in Dallas was indicted yesterday for, among other things, allegedly stealing from clients.  His online bio proves he's full of himself (especially near the end.) His "family lives life to its fullest from their 280 acre ranch in Palmer, Texas." Sheesh. 
  • We put an old clothes dryer out on the curb in front of our house last weekend and someone came by and loaded it in a truck within 15 minutes. 
  • The A's Brandon McCarthy (pitcher) almost got killed by a batted ball two days OK. After the initial "he's doing fine" reports, it was announced he underwent surgery on his skull. I think he used to pitch for the Rangers.
  • I missed the President's speech last night because I was at a high school football game. And, mind you, I believe that Thursday night high school football is downright un-American.
  • It sounds like his speech was much like Romney's: Good but not great. 
  • I always see a defendant charged with a misdemeanor decide to represent himself even though he doesn't speak English. He'll go into a prosecutor's office with an interpreter who works for the county to try and resolve the case. 
  • A "cool front" is coming through tonight which will drop the temperatures 20 degrees.  Being at a high school football game tonight at the moment it comes through would be fantastic. 
  • This morning it will be announced that the Big 12 has reached a deal with ESPN/ABC/Fox for $2.6 billion over thirteen years. Could TCU have joined at a better time? And I was absolutely convinced twice over the last three years that there would no longer be a Big 12.
  • It's a football travel weekend for me: An LSU night game and a New Orleans Saints day game (which just happens to be RG3's first game.)  I can't tell you how everything lined up perfectly for this trip (including family schedule.)
  • I also want to see a cemetery near the French Quarter -- the same one seen near the end of Easy Rider -- but so many reviews say "go with a tour -- it's in a bad neighborhood." 
  • I'll try to update on the Twitter -- which I've neglected for pretty much over a year.

The employment report was the worst in a while. Less than 100,000 jobs produced, and almost four times that number dropped out of the work force. Just gave up.

Further, prior months dropped 41.000 jobs.

The economy is cratering.

The superdome may come down on top of you guys Sunday. We just went through New Orleans and those people were already angry/jacked about Goodell giving them the shaft, and then Issac hit. Wear a helmet. I'm not even kidding. That is going to be a crazy event. T'shirts were everywhere say F*&k Goodell Etc.

Regarding unemployment....

The labor department even admitted that many people have completely given up looking for jobs. Also, many have taken any job they could get just to make ends meet.

If you factor in those two parts, the number would be around 13% or 14%, but I am sure that Obama would never tell you that. Don't expect to hear it from msnbc either! They are too busy getting that thrill up their legs from Obama.

I know it is touristy, but stop in Cafe DuMonde for beignets & coffee. And be sure to drop in Brennan's Restaurant. Commander's Palace has lost some edge, but worth a stop also. Uniquely Big Easy.

Re: The Cemetery. We walked from the Quarter. I wasn't uncomfortable at all. Don't forget an offering for Madame Laveau, and a piece of chalk. If you deface her grave with "XXX" (illegal to do), she'll grant you a wish.

Louis Armstrong park is just down the road. Not much to it, but it's a nice park and a cool statue of Stachmo. Plus, they got ducks.

Probably the key to the attorney's indictment--family heavily "involved" with HORSES, horse racing, horse showing, etc. That's about equal to America's Cup sailboat racing, once likened to--"tearing up $100 bills as fast as you can in the wind"! :-)

It's interesting how, regardless of the topic, the comments always come around to the push/pull of the political arena. The comments themselves, however, aren't that interesting. Nobody is saying anything new. Perhaps that because it's all been said before. Everybody likes to think that the Founding Fathers had such high ideals, and we are not honoring the memory of what they established.
Here are some comments made by the political operatives of the day (think Glenn Beck and Bill Maher in powdered wigs and tricorn hats) way back in the campaign of 1800:

Unemployment stats have NEVER included people who have done nothing to look for a job (filled out an application, gone to a job interview, made calls, etc.) in the month the data was taken.......doesn't matter what Pres. is in office.
Check out Economics 101 if in doubt.

938 - BG tried that argument once before. You are correct about the how the calculation is made, but not about the numbers. The number of Americans either working or looking for work has dropped like a rock under Obama. That artificially keeps the official unemployment rate down (since those not looking for work are not counted.) And the problem is getting worse, not better, under Obama.

I think the point he is tryoing to get across is that since the job market is so dismal, some have quit looking out of despair. If the job market were better, these people would still be looking for a job and would be counted as unemployed. You libs can take so much form everything said by a conservative except the common sense stuff. You have to be spoonfed the common sense stuff and stretch so far with the nonsensical stuff. You make ny head hurt.

What will it take to get the illegals out of Decatur? I agree with looking like LA. They are ruining the downtown area and the neighborhoods in town. Have you driven down Miller or Church street (N)? NO ONE is doing anything to stop the influx. HOW can we stop it? How can we get the ones here to leave? I'm sick of all of 'em!

As long as people are willing to accept the information fed them, we are pretty much up the creek. At that point, it becomes a shouting match. Instead of researching a topic themselves, we are so lazy we go to factcheck.org or snopes to determine the truth. The problem with that is wherever you go, you will get a biased opinion of what is true or untrue. Even the biggest lie will have a sliver of truth. I would challenge any liberal to read "The Road to Serfdom" by Friedrich Hayek. The book was written in 1944 by an Austrian economist so there is no democrat vs republican in the text but there is a lot of truth. The gist of the book is, the more people sucking on the government teat, the more control the government will have on your life. With each social program, the price you will pay is a little more loss of liberty. This is not a fun book to read becasue the similarities between Ameirica today and Europe in the 1940's are chilling.

The truth is, business is the answer, and Obama has cast stones at business since before he was president.

Business, WE, did build this.

Business BUILT everything in this country, including all of the government. Think about it...business provides almost all of the GDP, and therefore almost all of the income to the government, either through direct taxes, taxes on employees, capital gains taxes, etc.

Government gets a bit in leases, and of course concessions at Yellowstone. That is it.

So every time Obama hits business, he is killing the country. All of the presidents of this country, up until now, have realized the value of the private sector. R or D, government asked not why or why not, but let us get about the business of building this country. But not this guy, unless of course, you are a contributor to his campaign.

We DID build this. And will continue, when we are sure this government is not against us.

Incidentally, those blue things you see in many of my posts are called "links," which you can click on and read for yourself the data behind my comments. Do that enough and you, too, can "know it all," or at least more than before. Meanwhile, keep those cards and letters coming! I always love to hear from my fans!

He is doing your homework for you. You can read his sources and decide for yourself whether it is valid or not. I do not recall him ever calling other posters names but let him post and the more liberal readers really get nasty. It makes the liberal poster look petty and childish. Read the book I cited and see if it changes the way you feel about the direction of this country.

8:22 why don't you say what you mean. The only thing turned down for "stadium" improvement was the purchase of artificial turf!!! That would be field improvements, not stadium improvement. Your the prime example of how people talk around an issue. The stadium is fine. The field is fine. If you want artificial turf, then you and those who want it can group together and PAY for it as a gift. Works for me!
