Great discussion at the courthouse a second ago. Came across a guy who refuses to take his income tax deduction for his religious contributions because to do so would cause his 10% tithe to have the net effect of being less than 10%.
Discuss amongst yourselves. Or not.

Is he a Mormon? I know that is common practice among the members of the LDS faithful that I know. 10% MEANS 10%!! Now pay up or we won't let you in the Temple!
If you pay tithing on your gross, which in my opinion you should, then you can take the deduction and it doesn't effect the % of tithe. If you pay on your net and then take the deduction, then the guy is right, it will lower your % of tithe.
The accountant part of me says:
True only if he tithes "after tax" or based on "take-home pay". IIRC, it is "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God what is God's..." so one is not conditioned on the other. 10% of your gross income is still 10% no matter what you pay in taxes unless you get an earned income credit, but you wouldn't be taking deductions if that were the case.
The churchgoing part of me says:
10% is an OT rule, and although it is a good rule of thumb, NT says everything we have belongs to God, and it is more important to give with the right attitude, since we have been "freed" from such rules.

Tithing is silly. Our church wastes so much money and if I give them more they will waste even more. I look at tithing as I do most things, merely a suggestion.
Why don't they call tithing what it really is - membership dues.
Ok, the LAW (rules) of the old testament were removed when Christ came to earth. Now we are under the new covenant (notice how we eat bacon and we don't burn sheep anymore). Would someone please show me where in the NEW TESTAMENT Jesus or anyone else says you should "tithe". I mean show me where it says exactly that.
The old testament used the word repeatedly so if it was part of the new covenant, then it would say so. In my humble opinion, it is all God's money and use what you need and give the rest back to God. It is not a mathmatical equation anymore.

While I do agree with you that the specific 10% is no longer a command in the New Testament, you can't say that it was part of the law. It was not, the tithe was given before the law was ever established.
The guy is doing what he believes is right, and what he wants to do. If you want to give pre-tax, post-tax, cash, check, nothing, just your time, or service...then do so. The law of tithe was not part of the law of moses. The law of moses was fulfilled by the new testament law, thus since the new testament doesn't mention discontinuing the law of tithe, it can safely be assumed it remains a law.
It is AMAZING the number of people who HONESTLY believe that GOD would put a cap on the amount each human is expected to give to charity.
The arbitrary amount of 10% is further evidence that much of the stuff in the Big Book of Myths and Fables was written by old men with the agenda to control and fleece the sheeple who buy into the hookum.

I agree with anonymous number one. Why does anybody even WANT to discuss tithing or not tithing? This person just wanted to make a show of tithing. Such things should be between a person and God.
And some folks of the cloth use tithing issues to make people guilty enough to give. So wrong.

You're all missing the point. It is a matter of the heart attitude and not compliance. Even the widow gave a mite and it was acceptable. Because she gave with a thankful heart. It you are unable to tithe, (root word meaning 10%, firt given in the OT by Abraham to the king with no geneology) then give what your heart tells you to give. THat is more important than being a legalistic giver.

I have actually heard (don't know if true or not) of some churches mailing statements telling their brethern what they owe. This takes away that awful math part figuring about the 10% before/after taxes or any other problems with amount due. Don't know if they charge "late fees" or not.
Shouldn't the ones that haven't paid be like on a list posted on the internet so we could all beat them down with E-Mails until they coughed it up....kinda like dead beat dads or somethin?

Anon 10:41 you are right on. The New Testament is full of repeated teachings about forgiveness, grace and loving your neighbor...very little said in the NT about "passing the plate for the building fund."

The church I grew up in did a big pledge campaign and I had a single mom who didn't hit her goal pledge but gave what she could and still keep the roof over our head---yup we got a bill! No kidding an actual bill from the church that pointed out the pledge amount and the amount paid. I think that's when organized religion run by greedy men started to lose it's appeal with me.

mzchief: It is not a cap, it's a minimum. I understand some criticisms of the Bible. There are contradictions and questions of 'why' can be brought up all over the place. Unlike some, I view it as an imperfect book because of it being written, compiled and translated by imperfect men. But I try to look for the good and try to make sense out of it as best as possible.

I tend to agree with you that ANY religion's Big Book of Myths and Fables should be viewed in PART as a GUIDE for believers to follow in an attempt to feel more connected to God. However, it should NEVER be forgotten that MEN with AGENDAS wrote and published the Big Books of Myths and Fables and MUCH of what is contained within those books is NOT to the benefit of human kind or God but for the benefit of the RELIGION represented by each Big Book of Myths and Fables.

Face it, ANY group that ORIGINALLY contrived the concept and BELIEVES that through the "miracle of mass" a dry wheat wafer the size if a quarter becomes the ACTUAL body of "Christ" and wine becomes the ACTUAL blood of "Christ" for the purpose of REGULARLY and RITUALISTICALLY feeding it to members of the congregation CERTAINLY belongs in a UNIQUE category. Imagine if you can, Pope Benedict XVI DISAGREES with YOUR crackpot assertion that "Christians are Christians". July 2007, Pope Benedict issued a statement decreeing that the "Catholic Church is the only true church." and that other "Christian denominations were not true churches and therefore did not have the “means of salvation.” Incidentally, The Pope does indeed speak for the ENTIRE Catholic Church and ALL True Catholics believe NONCatholics are LOST.
Catholic dogma does indeed teach that the Eucharist and wine become the ACTUAL body and blood of "Christ" through "transubstantiation". Incidentally, Catholics prefer you reference the third entity of the Holy Trinity as the "Holy Spirit" and NOT as the "Holy Ghost". The "Ghost" name is bad for their image. Too much, in your face, hocus pocus. As far as Catholicism goes, just buying into the Jesus Myth is NOT enough to get you to Heaven. Catholic dogma dictates that the ONLY people who make it to Heaven are those who have been baptized into the Catholic religion and "Believe in the One Holy Catholic Apostolic Church."

Having decorated trees in my home, exchanging gifts and entertaining friends and family during the Christian holiday of Christmas does NOT make me ANYMORE a hypocrite than Christians who take their children to see Santa or decorate their home in trashy Santa themes.
I wear a Hijab and clothing that covers my arms and legs when I accompany my husband to Kuwait and Saudi Arabia because it is the CUSTOM of those countries. Doing this does NOT make me a hypocrite because I believe the Muslim religion is just as wacko as is the Christian religion. I wear Brooks Ariel running shoes designed for marathon runners and think running is Stoooopid (no offense to Barry but running is TRULY breaking your knees and back). Wearing running shoes does not make me a hypocrite nor does it make me a runner.

People with social disorders like mzchief thrive on attention ~ it’s fuel for the fire. Take away the fuel and the fire goes out. Hopefully it will be the same for her.
