Gone With The Wind

I finally finished it over the weekend. Thoughts: - I'm not sure Scarlett had any redeeming qualities. I mean, she ends up alone on the stairs. Happy life to her. - I haven't heard the name "Tara" so much since .... well.....a while back. - Clark Gable was pretty good although I can't name another movie he was in. - It was too long, but I guess epics are required to be too long. - The movie went nuts in the last hour. In a 15 minute period there was a miscarriage, a death of a child from a horse riding incident, and the death of another character from exhaustion. And I thought the Civil War was brutal. - I finally understand the "wear a curtain" Carol Burnett joke.

The Carol Burnett skit is absolutely classic!!! Unforgettable!!!

When I saw GWTW in the movie theater back in the 70's when I was young, the film broke right as Bonnie was falling off the pony. It kept trying to come back on, so it was in slow motion. Scarlett's voice as she was hollaring for Bonnie would start high and go way down low - Boooooonnnnnniiiiiieeeeee ----Booooonnnnniiiiiiiieeeeeeee. I laughed so hard I thought I would wet my pants.

Another story about GWTW... When it first came on TV in 1977-1978, it came on as a two-night movie. We got to change band practice times so everyone could stay home and watch Part II. Pretty cool!

The movie was began with George Cukor as the Director. He was supposedly making the movie from a "woman's point of view, as the book was written by Margaret Mitchell. His part is the lighter, more up beat part of the film. He was fired and replaced by Victor Fleming who directed the second part of the movie. Fleming made the film into a darker and more depressing movie. This may explaing the unhappy downer at the end. (Fleming also finished directing the Wizard of Oz for another director who got canned)
