Lots Of Death and Destruction Over There

The death toll due to the Pakistani earthquake (there was one, by the way) is now at 45,000. Unlike the Tsunami, there does not appear to be the outpouring of aid from Americans. Either (1) we're tapped out, or (2) who cares about Pakistan - it's full of those terrorism guys, isn't it?

How much are you sending?

I feel for these people but I think too many think of a disaster as a lottery, it was like the goverment sending cash to the WTC victims families. So if my family is hurt in a car accident, and the driver of the other car is on a terror watch list, do I get a check? So say too bad.

Yeah actually we did send Americans over there-pledged $50 million in aide. One thing that pisses me off, is our relief workers are bringing in aide as we speak and are actually being looted as they are parked handing out aide. One guy was shot this morning because he would not give some pakistani dude an entire box of food-meant to feed 10 families. Yeah, I say we should run right over there as fast as we can to help those people.. lol..

I think the US should send them the same amount they tried to send for Katrina.

We should not go in to help if we are putting relief workers in danger.

I think we are tapped out. I know I am. I would like to help but it just isn't in the budget.

I do think it is interesting that the Katrina death toll was supposed to be anywhere between 10K-70K. As per my predictions it was substantially lower. All goes to media hype.

There are a couple of factors working here. First, there are just lots more people living in more spread out places. Therefore, hurricanes, tornadoes earthquakes, tsunamis, floods etc affect more people everywhere. Second, the international media informs the entire world of events that were formerly only known locally.

So we will continue to learn of more events involving more people. We will be inundated with appeals for aid. Get used to it.

How long before the Pakistani government blames Fema and the Bush Adm for slow response?

I think Bush is actually the one to cause the earthquake.
