School To Use Breathalyzer At Dance

"At Santa Barbara High School, officials will screen every third or fourth student who arrives [for the homecoming dance] and anyone who appears drunk, said Principal Paul Turnbull. "But senior Alexander Argyropoulos said alcohol testing encourages students to use drugs that cannot be detected with the Breathalyzers. Drinking, he said, is 'better than possibly trying cocaine.' "

What an idiot! Testing for an illegal substance(alcohol) does not encourage illicit narcotics use unless you are just looking for a reason to fry your brain on coke or whatever your choice may be. Did I mention that the student is an idiot?

at least this student has priorites in order. Geesh, just let the kids come drunk so they don't do crack before the dance. afterall, there is a big difference between driving home from the dance drunk or high.

Maybe the administration should have an open bar so that no one is discriminated against.

I understand the school may have some legal liability if a kid gets killed driving home drunk from the Prom. I am not sure what the best way to handle this is.

If parents would properly raise their children with decent morals, and values, this wouldn't be typed, and you wouldn't be reading it, because it wouldn't be a problem.

Dave,

I don't think that is the case. I think you can be a perfect parent and your kids will still test the limits sometimes.

Hey 8:11,

My parents raised me right in a Christian home and I still drank like a fish in high school. Kids are going to experiment. To my knowledge, the kids go to the prom and then go get wasted, or at least they did in my day. I don't think this would deter any drinking, rather just put it off until after the prom.

Excuse me, "homecoming dance", not "prom". The same concept applies to both.

You know what you are going to have at these functions, the nerds, male & female, because the kids are who allowed to learn by their mistakes are going to be in someones pasture, with a keg, (and no keys), or maybe they have they keys and can drive home, what high schooler is above partying? Were you, if you were then you where a nerd> Didn't want to go to a party anyway, or, hang on, maybe it's because you weren't invited. Not directed at you just your above the average parent who doesn't have anything else to do but pat themselves on the back because of the perfect children they raised, Oh my goodness, It's a mini-me!!!!

I did all my partying in high school. By the time I got to college and was of legal age to drink, I didn't want to anymore. I had matured and had no interest in it. I wish I had never taken a drink. No one needs it. Now that I think back to those days, it's a wonder I didn't end up dead.

You don't have to drink to have an awesome party. Bring in about 10 honeys with nice booties for some bouncin.

so I typed my name into google just for fun and this is what I found.. Now I'm at UCSB and truely miss my days at Santa Barbara High.

Thanks for the posts about my editorial, here are my thoughts:

All of my friends took Extacy before the dance, we had a limo drive us to a party after and then everyone drank all night. The dance sucked, I even brought a breathalizer for the principle but he wouldn't let me test him with it... I don't party as much anymore, thank god I did in highschool because the kids at UCSB who didn't party in highschool do heavy drugs and end up wasting an education.

As for the first comment, " that student is an idiot" I think you are very lame for making a pointless comment and putting me down.
