Last Thought For Friday

After USA Today broke the "government is watching what numbers you dial" story yesterday, the President walked in front of the cameras early in the morning to try and stop the firestorm that was about to erupt. (The text of his short remarks are here). The appearance had to be in response to someone saying, "You gotta get out there!!! We're gonna get killed on this thing!!!" But he said this: "We're not mining or trolling through the personal lives of millions of innocent Americans. Our efforts are focused on links to al Qaeda and their known affiliates. " Every time the Administration gets accused of spying on Americans, it always uses lines like that. Question: If we know which calls are linked to al Qaeda, why don't we just go and pick those people up?

Because of defense lawyers ACLU types who scream "You violated his civil liberties - you can't do that - you have to prove it!"

He is focused on the terrorists? Give America a break. He is FOCUSED on BIG OIL.....daddy said so, so did President Cheney.

When will we really see who rules this administration?

And it won't change with the Democrats. They like what oil does for them too.

God bless America?

So, what is the right thing to do? Let terrorists in the U.S. make their plans to kill us, or invade their privacy in order to save lives? C'mon...which is it? What's the right thing to do? Apparently, the only answers would be WRONG. Who in the hell would even want to be president.

In these amazing days of technology, does ANYBODY really believe our government doesn't know where Bin Laden is and how we can get him?

We are being lied to - Republicans and Democrats know.

They are padding their pockets at the expense of our soldiers and dragging out this senseless war to keep the American economy strong.

And as soon as this one is over there will be another, and another and another.

The only act that will stop this madness is Jesus Christ and His return.

OK, Let me get this straight. It was OK with Libs when the two grandparents just happened to have a recording device and recorded Newt Gingrich and sent it to some whacked out Lib(McDermott) who sent it to the NEW YORK SLIMES. They were heralded as heroes. Please search GOOGLE for Phone Records and see how easy it is to buy anyone's phone records. Do you really think you have privacy? I thought GW didn't connect the dots? If the GOV'T wasn't trying to protect us, what would you complain about then? Does Uncle Sam have time to wiretap your phone and listen in on your pathetic meaningless conversations? Next time you call Afganistan, use a pay phone.

Please. The President didn't do anything when presented with a report before Sept. 11, 2001 stating in plain English there was going to be an attack. That was obtained without wiretapping.

What makes you think it'll be any different now? They've wanted to do it for years without impunity, now they have a handy excuse.

Hey, how're the plans coming along for your graduation? You know, from the third grade.

Easy answer - liberals would accuse you of profiling. I do agree with you however, Barry...let's go get them and use the phone lines to find them. You are beginning to think in the right direction.

You guy who seem to think it's ok to randomly scan phone records searching for possible connections to al Qaeda or whatever, why do you complain about random traffic stops looking for possible drunk drivers or contraband drugs? These traffic stops "might" also find a terrorist or other nut case. However, this type of police state action is just counter to our basic requirement for probable cause and the belief that you're innocent until proven guilty. The police and the government must follow our constitutional rules.

Again, remember the quote that "Those who would give up liberty for security deservers neither."

Remember also the quote, "Those who profess liberty in the absence of security has neither." I think the vast majority of us are for random traffic stops and I certainly have never complained about them. If fact, I encourage them.

2:27 You seem to reject the basic notion of the "no unreasonable search..." element of our constitution. What other rights do you freely yield? BTW, Iraq had much "security" under Saddam and "random searches" were common. Is this what you're advocating when you yield unlimited power to any part of our government? Be careful, freedoms lost are difficult to regain.

you republicans make me laugh-especially you, 9:57. great argument, by the way. in 5th grade, i always felt i had won if i managed to call someone a dumbass more than once. i don't understand...you all piss and moan about idiotic liberals and how you hate them and blah blah blah-and yet you continue to read (and COMMENT ON)an OBSVIOUSLY liberal blog? or maybe you don't realize-you could actually be that stupid. i choose to give you credit, however, and believe that you resort to reading liberal material because REPUBLICANS NEVER HAVE ANYTHING INTELLIGENT TO SAY!
