Now This Is Good For Public Banter

"MASCOT CHANGE — Bridgeport High School girls athletic teams are going back to old ways. All female teams have changed their mascot from Lady Bulls to Sissies. Karen Daugherty, secretary of the Bridgeport Booster Club, said the change was approved and goes into effect immediately." I think the name originally came from being the opposite of "Bullies" which, if memory serves, preceded "Bulls" as the boys mascot.

why? why do we do this? i just looked at the definition of a sissy and i will not let my daughter be one.

Anonymous said...

I don't know about Sissies but the moniker Lady Bulls never made any sense.

Anonymous said...

Amazing in an institution of learning we are telling our kids they are Sissies. Sissies is actually a made up word (slang). I understand that Lady Bulls did not make sense, but change the whole thing. Heck, Lady Cows? Or if you change one you have to change the other so the guys should be just the Sissies.. Remember that whole scandal in Decatur with equal treatment amongst guys/girls.

Why not the Heifers?

Sissies have been the name for the girls for many many years. There was a coach that came in and she changed it to Lady Bulls. It was never officailly changed. The tradition is back like normal. Go back and search the school. It was always and have always been the Sissies.

I agree with anonymous #4. Heifers all the way. Keep it technical as possible.

While on the subject of bovine school mascots....why the hell is Graham High School's mascot the "Steers"? If i'm not mistaken, that's a castrated bull. Why....why.....WHY?????

Anonymous said...

....ok, someone please enlighten me. A sissy is WHAT exactly?? How does one find a mascot!

Anonymous said...

Noun: Sissy
1. A timid man or boy considered childish or unassertive

This is hilarious. I can't wait until the next time I need to stop and take a crap in Bridgeport on the way to Decatur. I am sure we will see "Welcome to Bridgeport-Home of the Sissies" sign somewhere on 380 soon enough. Just rename the mascot for the entire ISD to Sissies just to make it fair.. All I can say is Welcome to Wise County!

Back in the 60's everyone in North Texas knew who the Sissies were, and everyone dreaded facing them in a basketball tourney. Ask Pam (Tackel) Worlow or Jeanelle (Lewis) Coale or J.R Eubanks. If only we could get Coach Cagle back. Yes, Eagles, those were the days you ate CROW!

Anonymous said...

Wizard,
Ok, thanks now I know you are old, and probably still live in Bridgeport-or you have moved to the better side.. Anyway who cares-it was the '60s, this is 2005 big difference. Besides, the Eagles eat crow? It would have sounded slightly cooler if you would have said, "Yeah Eagles bite the DUST or something." But Eagles eat CROW? Seriously comeon.

The 50's, 60's, 70's, 80, and most of the 90's we were the Sissies. The school board never approved the name change. It was a coach that changed the name. The girls and us parents are GLAD to have our name back. To go a little further with this our Middle School atheletes were the Yearlings. So come on people grow up we are honored to have the tradition back. We are honored to have had the women athletes as myself go through our high school years. SISSIES THE TRADITION IS BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Interesting discourse. A few observations:

If you look at the definition of heifer, some these girls are likely ineligible.

The anon who schedules his bowel movements must be anal anyway.

The anon who does the Decatur blue blood deal is like, seriously disturbed. Like totally.

I've been here 17 years now and I still don't understand the battle of big sandy.

Anonymous said...

I'll tell you what....no matter what you put on these girls' jerseys, its gonna be funny. Bridgeport Sissies, Bridgeport Heifers, Bridgeport Lady Bulls, Bridgeport Cows....whatever...I can laugh at all of them.

I'm glad I graduated from Boyd....we never had a mascot "identity crisis." We've even won a couple of state championships on the football field....still waiting for B'port and Dick-ate-er to deliver on that one. (Hope I ruffled a few feathers with that one!!!)

all i hear are the old timers like havent it back. most of the girls today i have talked to say they hate sissies because its the butt of any and all jokes. at least it will give something for decatur to joke about (like we really need that)

Anonymous said...

Who would have ever thought this would stir up so much input? Both local newspapers were notified to please refer to the Bridgeport girls as "Sissies" instead of "Lady Bulls" when they do a write up on them. They were thouroughly explained that we were just bringing the tradition back. They were told the name never officially changed; it was a coaches decision. Both papers were told the tradition goes back to when the football team was called the "Bullies". They were told if they wanted further information about the tradition to contact the administration office or the coaches at the High School, I could not provide it. Why it was even put in the Update I cannot answer; why it was worded the way it was I cannot answer. Everybody has their preference and opinion, not everybody can be pleased - we are here strictly to support the girls.

They may be called Sissies and that may be the butt of a lot of jokes, but wait until you meet them on the court!

Personally, I remember being embarassed being called the Sissies in high school but looking back it is a tradition and I am now proud to say I was a Sissie

Just to let you know if you didn't grow up here, you never will!

RE: Understanding Battle of the Big Sandy

Decatur people honestly believe they are superior in every way. It is not a friendly rivalry between two small (same sized) towns. It is a the annual opportunity to put those worthless people who live west of Sandy in their place. Everything about Bridgeport horrifies Decatur people (They act like Mrs. Drysdale and think BP people are the Clampettes) No exceptions, no real attempt to find out otherwise.

Anonymous said...

I know I would take being known as the Bridgeport Sissies anytime. I would hate to think my school was known for kids (cheerleaders) shooting other cheerleaders in the butt. GO BRIDGEPORT

Anonymous said...

Those BHS butts are expendable they are inferior to to the fine behinds that sit on the hill.

Anonymous said...

This is getting ridiculous. Yes, Bridgeport may have a dumb name. But, it is tradition. The reason people treat Bridgeport people like crap, is because you come to our city to shop, eat, drink. You crowd our streets, and pump bull sh*t into our economy. Thank god for beer.

m&m said...

YOU ALL NEED TO GET OUT OF DECATUR AND BRIDGEPORT FOR A WHILE...THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS

Anonymous said...

I agree-or get laid, one of the two.

Anonymous said...

it thought decatur is superior, thats why we moved here.

Anonymous said...

GOOD IDEA! Y'all get out of Wise County for a little while. You won't have to worry about sissies and bullies and what-not. Try taking up a hobby....drinking is a good one....Ft. Worth has some nice bars. You'll forget all about this crazy mascot stuff. I'll even save you a seat next to me. Plus, I'll do you one even better...I won't tell your fellow Baptists that we went. It's our little secret.

If I must, I'm on board with calling them the Heifers. Technical is the only way to go.

Anonymous said...

My son graduated in Bridgeport - we moved to Decatur because it was closer to work - I liked B'port. I like Decatur my kids have friends in both towns I have friends and co-workers from both towns. I would venture to say that most of you do also. I think that it is generally the "older" generation that carry and pass on this long running grudge that borders on hatred. It is so much more than a friendly rivelry. And it's silly.

Bridgeport is a dirty town, reminds me of towns in west texas, dirty, all those rocks trucks stinky, dirt everywhere

Anonymous said...

Maybe you should have your royal nostils cleaned and while your at it you might have your royal eyes checked. Have you looked around Decatur lately. Ever taken a good whiff when the south wind blows through Decatur. It smells like a roadside bathroom that hasn't been cleaned for a while. More tea Mrs. Drysdale?

Anonymous said...

I look around Decatur and all I see is growth!!!!! B-port nasty

Anonymous said...

Take a drive north of Walnut. It looks like Newark. Growth!!!!!!! like empty buildings (KFC, Brickwalls, Ace hardware, the Wings joint...)or the six resell shops on the square that are now 3?
All you have is stuff that piggybacks on the Wal Mart traffic.

To tell you the truth neither town looks so hot.

Anonymous said...

Ace Hardware? you have not been to Decatur in a while? Its Beals now@

Anonymous said...

that south wind is boyd blowing to the north you are smelling. i enjoy the the small of chilis and starbucks myself, it sure much better than rock or bport dos chilis.

6 resell shops to 3? is that suppose to be a slap in the face ... what is special about having 6 of them? this aint bridgeport you sissy.

and decatur cheerleaders shot a sissy in rump ... whats is so wrong about that? have you ever been to a paintball park? people get tagged there all day long. much better than being a sissy. go eagle cheerleaders!!!

Anonymous said...

As usual you revel in your unjustified arrogance

That ain't Chili's your smelling. The sewer plant built in the south part of town makes the whole place smell like crap. You're right to be proud about Chili's. Not many places could boast that they have the world's smallest Chili's

By the way what does rock smell like?

The point about resell shops is although there are a number of stores in town not many of them make it. So the empty building get filled up with resale shops that don't make it either. And you call it the main street project. Very impressive. (side note: be careful shopping in a resale shop, you might touch something someone from Bridgeport wore and it will be like so gross & dusty)

Yep, Decatur, the new Highland Park. Maybe, Neiman's will go in the old Beall's location (next to all those vacant store fronts).

When I was Sports Ed. at the WCM from 1998 to March 2003, I lived in bridgeport and worked, obviously, in decatur. What I saw were good - and bad - in both towns. Good and bad people, smells, restaurants, houses, etc. What I also saw was an unabashed hatred of the "other" city. People in Bport called us the "Decatur Messenger." Decatur people asked why all that "stupid bridgeport stuff is in the paper?" If these two towns would quit living in the past and get on with life, they could combine and make Wise COunty a force to be reckoned with - politically, economically, etc. BTW, I now LIVE in west Texas, and I can tell you for sure, you peoople live in one of the prettiest places in the state. It's an area alive with growth, bustling with activity. ENJOY IT!!
As far as the BP mascot, I think the older people need to realize that "Sissies" has a connotation with it that could potentially be embarassing to the young ladies wearing the BP maroon. Were the students asked? Was a poll taken? If not, you are doing a disservice to the current and future BP girl athletes.

Mitch,
Why did you have to leave? You are missed by a ton of people-thanks to some guy that took your spot (not to name any names)...Please come back...............................................

Anonymous said...

To answer you question Mitch. Yes the girls wanted it changed. They even went to the school board to have it changed back. Thats when they were told it was never changed to Lady Bulls we have always been the sissies. Welcome back the tradition.

Anonymous said...

if there are a ton of people who miss that guy, they must all be in your family. i know many sports people at decatur and boyd were happy with the change and several cheerleader moms thought him taking pictures at cheer camp and of underneath our cheerleaders while they were in the air was just a tad on the "chester" side. i wont go into the computer stuff i heard about, im just glad my daughter's cheerleading picture didnt show up on the web somewhere.

Anonymous said...

whew, and i thought my daughter was the only one freaked out by that old sports writer. out kids go to decatur, what about yours?

Anonymous said...

To the last two anon's,
I didn't know the man, but my wife and daughter (she graduated last year) said the same type things when the reporter was around. And then to make it worse we would hear from others at work he had told people at karaoke or people from other schools that said certain girls were hot, or that the coaches are hot.
Some people might liek their kids being looked at this way, but not me. We are very happy with the guy who takes care of our sports now. By the way we are from Paradise.

Um, yeah, go Sissies !!!!
