Random Monday Morning Thoughts

  • There was a discussion this morning about shielding elementary school children from the news of the Connecticut shooting. Really? There's no way they wouldn't hear about it. Right?
  • But there was no reference to the incident at the elementary school choir performance I went to on Friday night. I would think a vague reference followed by Silent Night would have been a nice touch.  (They had time for it -- it lasted over an hour and a half.)
  • After I wrote the above, I learned Saturday Night Live opened up with a children's choir singing Silent Night.
  • And adults shouldn't at least talk about gun control? If not now, when?
  • Will "Sandy Hook" have the same meaning as "Columbine"? I'm guessing the answer is yes.
  • My favorite place in the world is my chair at home with the Family Pup beside me.
  • I'm into Season Four of Breaking Bad. I think I end ever episode by saying, "This show is so well done."
  • The Cowboys game was really entertaining. But why was Josh Brent on the sideline?
  • Did you see the Danny Amendola's spike yesterday that almost blinded an old guy?
  • Warmest December ever?
  • Mrs. LL and I were sleeping bums on Saturday and it was fantastic.
  • From the Update today: "Fiery Sunday". Why is "fiery" not spelled "firey"?
  • The "Elf on the Shelf" bit is pretty cute. Still a little weird, but very cute.

When?

After the funerals. When the passion of the situation has passed, but the magnitude has had time to sink in. And hopefully both sides can set aside histrionic rhetoric and get something meaningful done to prevent these things.

Gun control should be discussed by responsible adults. The politicians who would legislate gun control are irresponsible -- see current condition of federal government to confirm that -- so they are not fit to make decisions regarding gun control.

Obviously,we need to have a discussion about guns in this country.

I see that NBC News invited folks from every pro-gun group in the country to be part of their discussion this weekend and were turned down by every single one.

Does not seem like a winning strategy to me.

Please tell me what gun control law would have prevented this? Seriously, tell me the law you would pass regarding guns that would prohibit this.

Two things "might" have prevented this. One, better mental health available for troubled youth. Two, several trained and armed people in each school building.

Katy:

The Pro-Gun People work on fairy tales and rhetoric. They can't participate in a rational discussion.

Please note:

When I say "Pro-Gun People" this is a reference to the staff of the organized groups that blindly defend guns in any and all situations. The is not a reference to responsible gun owners.

The difference is very important.

There will always be evil people. We can talk about gun control and mental health issues to make ourselves feel better.

Anonymous said...

I am tired of gun control. People shoot people period. If we take away the guns, people will figure out how to make more bombs. Look at the middle east. They use bombs because guns are harder to get. If we ban all the materials need to make bombs, they will start using cars or trucks. They are available. It suprises me that more folks do not use vehicles at weapons. If we ban all vehicles they will go back to using swords or some other medievil device. People kill people not guns. Power tools are more dangerous then guns, maybe folks will use them as a weapon of choice. GET OVER IT WITH THINKING THAT GUNS ARE KILLING PEOPLE

Anonymous said...

Evil people will always find a way to kill...many ways to do this. No need for more gun laws. In this case I blame the mother for providing the guns in her own home where she knew she was living with a very unstable (to say the least) son. Yes, Newtown, this happens even in upscale neighborhoods..no one is exempt from the mentally ill.

Scott said...

Gun Control should be discussed, we should just wait on it. Right now, everyone's concentration ought to be on supporting and praying for the victims and their families involved in this tragic shooting.

Unfortunately, some of your fellow Dems did not get that memo. They are already busy preparing gun control legislation and have publicly stated that.

I don't have an issue with owning guns but what is the purpose of an assault rifle? Does anyone really need one?

Scott said...

Besides, for your info Connecticut has one of the toughest gun control laws already in the nation. All of the guns were legal in that state.

Also, you are silly if you believe that tougher gun control laws will stop criminals from using guns. If they are already planning something like this, do you think that they are concerned about the weapon that they have being illegal?

The Dude said...

Tim McVeigh blew up the federal building in OKC using fertilizer and diesel fuel. We gonna outlaw these items too? You cannot legislate evil.

Gun control is not the issue we should be talking about.

The REAL issue is the fact that we have a sudden surge of people who are mentally ill to the point that they are dangerous, and nobody in society can do anything because there are politically correct laws that protect them from being institutionalized.

I know parents of children with these tendencies who fight tooth and nail to keep their kids in normal school because they are in denial that their child is different......when special education is the best thing for them.

Va. Tech knew for a long time that the guy who went on a rampage was dangerous, yet they did nothing. The Aurora shooter, also mentally ill, chose the one theater in his area that was a gun-free zone because he knew nobody there would be armed to fight back.

Gun control is too simplistic a response to something like this, Barry. Until you liberals are willing to get rid of your p.c. laws protecting the mentally ill, please refrain from trying to limit my Second Amendment rights.

We do not need any discussion on Gun Control at all in this country. Obama is after our guns, he wants to disarm the public, and is clearly not above politicizing the death of children to get his way. It seems to me everything is working out in favor of Obama and the elitist liberals right now. So much so I cannot help but think the Obama administation was involved in Sandy Hook.

We need people control, not gun control. Money needs to be spent on legislation to educate people on the warning signs associated with mass shootings. If you want to tax gun sales to do this, fine. This guy had to be showing some clear warning signs and his poor mother should have removed the guns from the house. It is more her fault than it was the guns. She should have known.

The next thing after they take our guns will be global warming debate. This is where they take down our economy and rebuild the country around a socialist model, everyone is doled out the same rations, no more monetary system. All the stores in the US will be controlled by the government, you will be given a monthly voucher for supplies based on your family unit. Factories will be shuttered in record numbers, farms will be nationalized, and farm animals slaughtered and burned in mass graves for farting too much. They will also institute controls on how many children you can have based on age, race, etc. No more wealth or consumerism. The government will seize all church assets. Tithing will be divided evenly among all religions approved by the government. The only wealth will be held by politicians and artists, and intellectual elitists who side with this government.

Then they ban eating meat because they feel it is immoral to kill animals. I will be hanging in the sewer cooking rat burgers and refusing to use the 3 sea shells to wipe my arse. Then you have your liberal utopia, and that is where we are headed.

Anonymous said...

it is already against the law to kill someone.

The ROOT of the problem with these shooting massacres is not the availability of guns....it's the fact that there is a surge of mentally ill people in this country who are actually quite dangerous, many of whom nobody wants to do anything about because people feel sorry for them.

Virginia Tech administrators knew that their shooter was dangerous and mentally ill, but they kept him in school because politically correct laws protected his right to stay.

I know parents of kids with severe mentally ill tendencies who fight tooth and nail to keep their kids in normal school and out of special education because they are in severe denial that their child is different......which means the child doesn't get the special help he needs.

Half the people I saw in criminal court had severe mental illness issues that made them dangerous.

People can fuss all day about gun control, but until they address the ACTUAL problem, these shootings will continue!

is there any reason for someone to own a sports car? a cigar boat? a mansion? an assault weapon? etc etc

Anonymous said...

The issue isn't "stopping" but lessening incidents like this.

We can require background checks for all purchases wherever!!!!!!

We can ban assault weapons and jumbo magazines

We can stop cutting mental health budgets first everytime there is a economic downturn.

We can start identify these young white males all the while prompting parents in denial about their troubled teens to wake up now.

What we can't do is sit on our butts until the perfect solution is found.

Anonymous said...

"Please tell me what gun control law would have prevented this?"

When getting a gun, part of the background check would be "do you suspect that someone in your household is mentally ill, or have they been treated for any form of mental illness?"

For starters.

Required gun safes and gun locks, for another.

"Tim McVeigh blew up the federal building in OKC using fertilizer and diesel fuel. We gonna outlaw these items too?"

Outlaw? No. Regulate better? Absolutely.

By the way, do you know how closely fertilizer is monitored now? That each manufacturer has a specific taggant in theirs that identifies where it came from? That the FBI regularly checks up on large purchases of fertilizer? That most of it is chemically altered to no longer be usable as an explosive?

In other words, fertilizer is heavily regulated in the wake of OKC.

You need to go back to debate school, because you just fell into an argument FOR greater regulation of guns.

9:26...I can give you a very good reason. If society ever breaks down, due to social unrest, economic collapse, war, or natural disasters, you will likely need a weapon like this if you have any chance of survival. In any of these scenarios you will need a weapon that holds large amounts of ammo, that can be used for protection, hunting and can be easily fired by almost all adults and some children. An AR-15 is the perfect all around weapon for a survival scenario. Whether you believe any of these survial scenarios are possible or not, it doesn't matter. Some folks in this country do, and want to protect their right to prepare for these survival situations. I see no reason we should pass legislation to keep them from it as long as they are responsible people. I think the current gun laws cover that.

Anonymous said...

I bet 9:18 thinks the reason Obama won is because republicans just didn't have a candidate who was "republican enough," and if they just make sure they get their conservative message out next time, they'll win.

The Jackal sort of has a point. Texas is 50th in the nation in the quality of its mental health care.

When we discuss health care, it's about mental health care, too.

The majority in this state believe that health care is all about the individual, and if they Don't receive care, then good riddance - ya just should have tried harder in life.

But when things like this happen, we see that other people are affected by lack of care...

Gun Control:

You cannot control guns unless you're in country that does not have a constitutional right to bear arms.

While it seems like an easy fix to take away all the guns, because that will cure the gun violence, that would be same as taking away all eating utensils because they cause obesity.

It's the person, not the tool used. Crazy China guy stabbed 30+ children a while back, so should the Chinese confiscate all knives in the country.

Revoking someone's right to keep firearms is unAmerican.

It's not a gun control thing. It's a reaching people thing. Evil people intent on hurting someone will not be stopped because they can't get a firearm. On Friday in China, the same day as Newtown, a man stabbed 22 kids at a Chinese elementary school. We have to try and reach people on a personal level. If we think, "making it impossible to get guns will solve the problem", then we haven't solved anything. Evil people, intent on hurting people, will not be stopped by legislation.

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

After he fired that bullet he was promptly shot by an off duty deputy working security. Luckily a tragedy was averted. Where is the media in reporting this? In this case an off duty officer and his gun saved lives. I agree something must be done to make schools safer but outlawing guns is not the answer. If we arm the principle and several teachers, have more security etc... it will help. Pretty sure the crazies would think twice before attempting to harm innocent children if they knew others close by were armed.

And no guns themselves don't kill but they make it a hellava lot easier especially assault rifles and armor piercing ammo.

Anonymous said...

Everyone who wants to arm everyone needs to remember that that at both Columbine and Sandy ended the same way , the killers killed themselves. Knowing that they might meet someone armed may have had no effect on them ,they are crazy after all. They did not expect or want to live through the attack so you could speculate that they may have gone in with guns blasting away and done even more damage before one of your heroes managed to shoot them. Also I taught school over 30 years and can think of many fellow teachers I would not want to see carrying a gun in the halls. Even police officers who have to go through extensive background checks and testing have been known to use their snap and use their guns to kill in their personal lives, so no amount of checking can rule out the same for teachers.

Neither the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting nor the mall shooting in Portland earlier last week were about gun control. In BOTH shootings, the weapons used were stolen from their rightful, legal, owners.

The problem is a mental health problem combined with an explosion in violent video and online games that glorify blood, guts, and death, all the while desensitizing these mentally ill young people to the realities of actual, real life death and violent acts of this type.

10:43, Where did I say I wanted to "arm everyone"? I am all for weeding out the folks that do not need guns. I use mine for hunting and protection. I never carry one where it is illegal to do so, I never handle one in an unsafe manner, they are all kept in a safe. I have no history of mental illness, no violence and would not consider fighting the authorities if guns were banned and they came to my house to take them away from me. I am peaceful and law-abding if you will.

I just think this is the tip of the iceberg on the liberal agenda. Disarm the public and you have no chance of revolution once the government no longer works for the people. If the govermnent continues as such it will collapse, and unrest will ensue. Just wait a watch. You libs have lost your sense of history, quickly forgetting how our great country was formed.

Liberals are not realists in nature...you only solve problems in the absolute, idealist manner. Solve gun crime with an absolute ban (READ BETWEEN THE LINES ON OBAMA'S SPEACH). Problem is your are only governing with the support of a portion of the people and you will force your ways on the rest of us.

Gun control won't work, Gun control would have done nothing to prevent it, We need more guns to combat guns. These are the arguments I've heard over and over from pro-gun crowd.

In 1996, a gunman opened fire on tourists in a seaside resort in Port Arthur, Tasmania. He killed 35 people and wounded 23 more. It was the worst mass murder in Australia’s history. Two weeks later Australia enacted strict gun control laws and haven't had a single mass murder since.

Homicides by firearm dropped 59% with no increase in non-gun homicide, Suicide by gun dropped 65% and most importantly mass shootings stopped completely. We have had 11 mass shootings since 96.

Look it up wordkyle because that is fact.

So, by gun control, it seems a large group of people are saying that they would only ban assault rifles, armor piercing ammo, etc.

The vast majority of gun violence is done by pistols, and armor piercing rounds are as scarce as light sabers.

We were all (well, most)born in a country founded on the belief, affirmed by statutory authority of the constitution, to have firearms. If this doesn't work for you, there are 195 other counties on this planet to pick from. Move.

There are evil people in this world and it matters not if a piece of paper says they can't have a gun. The only sure way to combat violence is with a greater level of violence.

On a side-note, I wonder how many of our mass murderers were given prescription medication for ADD/ADHD, etc. as children. Seems like throwing chemicals down a developing child's mouth while his brain is still developing seems to a bit rash.

Ocean levels have only maintained the levels from the 1840's because the water that has been changed to ice is being replaced by silt washed or blown into the world's oceans. Did you ever wonder where all the eroded rock and soil from the Grand Canyon went? Or where all the billions of cubic yards of silt each year from the Yellow River in China and other rivers around the world is going? If ice is melting and being added to the silt that is entering the oceans then the oceans should be above 1840s levels.

I can see Obama banning guns by executive order like he is doing everything else he wants to do.

128 - I may be an idiot, but not because I don't believe Tea Partiers are extremists. The challenge was simple: Point out a written Tea Party organization's agenda item which you would consider extremist. Here are a few samples to help you get started:

Tea Party Patriots: "...support for fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free market economic policies."
Americans for Prosperity: "...engage citizens in the name of limited government and free markets..."
FreedomWorks: "...recruits, educates, trains and mobilizes millions of volunteer activists to fight for less government, lower taxes, and more freedom."

Good luck in your search. I await your reply.

I do not allow guns in my house. We have always had a pact...if America crumbles to the point of people running around stealing & killing for survival, we only need to buy a gun and two bullets...I will not live in a world like that.

Banning violent video games and movies (Batman) will stop this violence in young people.

And WTF is that going to do for the rest of us that are already prepared. When well armed like minded people rise up, do you think a cop making 18k a year that cant hit a bull in the ass is going to show up and take something from us, keep watching TV and cue Lee Greenwood and the Eagle Whistle.

6:57, the Tea Party stickers on all the Japanese 4x4's come to mind. We love the USA but drive toyotas that our taxes were given away in the form of abatements to build. If you are a tea party member then drive a Ford for goodness sake! They did not take a bailout.

Some of these people are idiots when it comes to guns. Dont you realize that we dont have access to full auto anything. There are strict NFA rules on full auto rifles and they are painfully expensive. Also, for those of you spouting off about the size of the bullet or themdestructive power, do you have any idea that it is half the size of most deer rifle rounds? And, its not a clip, its a magazine!
