Thanks to a faithful reader who tipped me off to a
bill filed by State Rep. Phil King (that's our rep) that would completely
abolish school property taxes.
Attaboy!
So what's the alternative we'll use? Uh, well, he didn't file any bills to solve that little problem.

And America gets a little stupider.

So we're in a race with Arizona and Mississippi to the bottom? On another note, isn't Phil King the jackwagon who gave us a deregulated electricity market? How's that working out for us? To quote a certain Wise County barrister, "We're doomed."
Nothing in that bill is incorrect. All true and it does say to allow a more equitable method to be implemented.
How about an income tax and every school gets the exact same dollars (per student) to educate a child. Every kid in Rio Grande Valley has same amount of $$$ spent on him as the kid in Southlake or Allen. Can't wait to see those little immigrants playing football on their new artificial turf in multimillion dollar stadiums.
I am sure when Mr. King realizes that rich people's money will go to educate poor kids he will retract that bill.
While technically accurate, your description of the bill makes it sound stupider than it really is. The abolition of the funding wouldn't kick in until 2016, and then only if voters approved it. (Theoretically giving the legislature several years to determine how schools would be financed.) Besides, the Texas Supreme Court ruled in 2005 that school districts illegally use property taxes to pay for public education.
Understand, I don't necessarily agree with the bill. I see the legislature justifying a state income tax via this route.
Deer Billy Bob.
U misspelt spoiled. the carrect spellin is spoilt.

What a douchebag! Where is the money going to come from. I am sure that the lottery will pay for it, since all the money collected goes into the school fund.
If you don't like Phil King vote him out instead of bitching about him everytime his name is brought up you bunch of whinney asses....
Well SOMETHING needs to be done about property taxes! Time for everyone to pay a fair share and stop riding on the backs of those who own property. Hell, can't even buy a nice home in Decatur because the school taxes hike up mortgage payments to the point its totally unaffordable to think about living there. Of course, all the Illegals live there because they don't have to pay anything for property taxes.
We will implement a 30% sales tax on everything.
Won't that be nice!
Another way of looking at it, why should tax payers have to continually fund school districts that fail? i.e. Dallas, Houston etc...
Didn't Phil K.'s kids attend private school?
I cannot understand how we are unable to vote him out of office.
Sounds like a great plan!! Cut those taxes! It's just socialism anyway! We don't need no education! Mexico is our role model! Typical republican dribble. But when he comes up for reelection he can say he tried to get rid of property taxes and the idiots will vote him back in!!! The great part is that this time some of these stupid bills may pass cause they have control of the Texas government. And when the bills become laws because the people that actually have a brain have been voted out and were not there to stop them they can take full credit for their work! Good times for Texas in the near future!!!
I bitch about that douchebag, and I do vote against him.

His kids were homeschooled.
Mrs. Phil King homeschooled their 6 kids.
Hey 5:54! What landlord pays property taxes that aren't folded into the rent they charge? Renters pay taxes through their lease payments.
While the measure doesn't have the proverbial snowball's chance, it is a valid point to raise to consider options, inasmuch as property taxes are pretty much just incremental confiscation, no?
illegals pay sales taxes and the rent money they pay goes to the landlord who then pays the property taxes.
Correct 8:58
8.58 So why don't they report their wages. Are they to busy sending it back home? I agree with sales tax. That way everyone has to pay.
Phil King will never be voted out so long as straight party voting exists...and lazy voters check it without bothering to learn the candidates.
Phil King looked around Wise County and understood that we didn’t need education.
If we are stupid enough to elect him and folks like Tom Bishop or anyone who puts an "R" next to their name then let’s spread the ignorance.
Dude!

Only Phil King's college education is listed online, so I don't know if he attended public schools for K-12. If he did, I find it interesting that he wants to turn his back on the system that funded his own education.
Bill Hobby had it right when he said that the Texas GOP doesn't want to educate black and brown kids.
Sounds like most of you think that more money equals better public education. That's not the case. I think we need to get rid of the teacher's unions and keep the truly quality teachers, and get back to educating our kids properly. We could double the funding and it would likely make the kids dumber and the Unions richer. On a similar note I don't have kids and therefore don't get that cool federal child tax credit. I don't mind paying for quality education in our public schools, but,,, oh hell, the whole tax system in this country just SUCKS!!
Dude? hehehehe
Phil King is doing nothing more than grandstanding. Perry will run for President. Wanna bet King will run for governor?
I hope the public schools all over Texas give him a good thrashing over this one.
So under (4) of his legislation, what alternative does he propose?
His kids were homeschooled. I assume the parents of homeschooled children have to pay school taxes. This really doesn't seem fair. They should at least be given some sort of tax break.
Tom - I have no interest in defending Phil King. However, your argument as expessed is so poorly thought out it's offensive. How is King "turning his back" on anything? Because he's looking at changing (not eliminating) funding for education? How did you arrive at your opinion on the Texas GOP's position on education? A clumsy attempt to label another group as racist is as bad as racism itself.
I don't mind another person expressing an opinion, even one I disagree with, if they can back it up with some sort of thought. Your statements, though, are simply superficial partisan heckling.
@wordkyle - I'm waiting for King's alternative to funding public education. As Barry said, it's not listed in his bill. Like it our not, our public school system is based on a system where community members pay property taxes to support the education of ALL children. Denying that is a disservice to the kids and the state.
Does he want vouchers? Charter schools? Private-public partnerships? Come up with a solution to what you see as a problem,
Because the majority of public school students are Black and Hispanic, it seems to me that Lege members like King are more concerned for finding tax breaks for white families whose children are homeschooled, attend private schools or go to predominately white schools in rural or suburban areas.
And if you want to read more about what Bill Hobby had to say, check out the article in the Jan. 23 Dallas Morning News.
While no one is outright denying a student an education based on his/her race (well, maybe not Leo Berman and Debbie Little), there's no hiding the attempts at discrimination.
Debbie Riddle, not Debbie Little. Sorry about that - retreating back into my far-left cave (which is really just a bit left of center) to better rationalize my arguments.
1014 - King's legislation proposes a specific thing. Another specific piece of legislation may propose the alternative funding method. I'm not saying it's great legislation, I'm saying that as written it comes nowhere close to unilaterally destroying Texas schools. Apparently one of the problems with ad valorem taxes is that they violate the Texas Constitution. That's a bit more serious than simply not liking them.
Hobby's statement accusing the GOP of racism is as stupid as using it as a reference. He will accuse any sort of budget cuts of being motivated by racism. It's like the old joke about the giant asteroid headed for Earth. The New York Times headline: "Planet to be destroyed -- women and minorities hardest hit."
Illegals do report their wages, often using an ITIN number that the IRS assigns regardless of immigration statuts. The problem isn't illegals reporting or not reporting their wages--it's their employers who persist in paying everyone cash or as contract labor to avoid paying employment taxes.
Phil King would like everyone to homeschool their kids and live in an underground house like he does. However, my public high school senior son is taking AP calculus and physics, while I am not even sure I spelled those subjects correctly.

More accurately it appears the Obama administration (US Government) is trying to interfere with education in Texas!

OH NO does that mean we can't have Turf at the new track. what are we going to do with all that extra money the school board thinks we have for Turf fields and sports
This is going to be fun! For years the crazy GOP Members have filed bills that the democrats acting like good parents say "no that would cause X to happen" then they would run back home and tell everyone how they tried to do this but couldn't cause those mean old democrats wouldn't let them cause they think education and caring for the less fortunate is important!!! Now the parents are gone and all these things may actually pass. They can abolish the public school funding base with out an alternative!! Yea!! No more property tax!! Now what conservatve can oppose that!! We don't need no education!! Can't wait to see their faces when they realize no one is there to actually stop the stupidity!!! But when the parents get back there is gonna be one big mess to clean up!!
I am tired of paying thousands of dollars a year for land that I already own. Just to keep my property, I will have to keep working forever. When does my land become mine. I dopn't mind funding the schools, but don't threaten to take away my land if I don't.
I will never buy or build within the city limits of Decatur - those folks are robbing us in taxes.
4:51 you are funny. You try to get your jab at DISD in on every single post, but sadly for you, no one took your bait this time, except for me you fool! Ha Ha!
