Random Monday Morning Thoughts

  • When I was a little kid, there was a guy that would wear some weird jump suit and have have an exercise show on TV. Jack LaLanne died yesterday at the age of 96.
  • This Super Bowl talk is becoming a beat down. But I'll probably end up going down to Sundance Square to see the ESPN broadcasting setup.
  • Now the Family Cat's new bit is to try and bolt out the door every time a door is opened. She went missing for 30 minutes yesterday until she decided that inside isn't so bad.
  • "Texas Gov. Rick Perry said he will introduce emergency legislation requiring women seeking abortions to first get a sonogram of the fetus. Perry, speaking Saturday at an anti-abortion rally in Austin, said the measure would also include the requirement that women listen to the sound of the heartbeat." Maybe I was wrong about his presidential aspirations. I think he's running for Pope.
  • I think the JesusHatesObama.com commercial that was rejected by Fox for the Super Bowl was submitted knowing it would be rejected and thereby getting it publicity. Like I guess I just did.
  • In case you missed  Keith Olbermann abruptyly quit his show on MSNBC on Friday. Of course, this will only generate comments about how Fox trumps MSNBC.
  • Anyone have an update regarding the wreck listed in the Update over the weekend? That looks awful. The lady grew up in Alvord.
  • Apparently the speaker at the last Wise County Tea Party meeting advocated the legalization of dope.
  • I took a record long nap on Saturday. I think everything finally caught up with me.
  • Hey, now.
  • The Family Unit went to Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum yesterday without me.  I now think I want to see it.
  • An explosion with fatalities just happened inside Moscow's largest airport.

dope, that's pretty specific. Are they sure it was the Tea Party and Not Willie's "Tea Pot Party"?

The Olbermann story hadn't reminded me of how Fox News pwns its competition -- that's old news. It did make me wonder if this was fallout from his political contribution "scandal" last November. Maybe some hurt feelings from being scolded in public?

The Wise County Tea Party organizers need to be more careful in selecting speakers or they will send the wrong message. Until they get their act together, I won't be participating.

Who is the "Hey now"?

Anonymous said...

Is she a Mexican or just a white girl with pre-cancer skin.

Anonymous said...

Not to sound judgmental, but why can't people drive well in Wise County?

I heard that this county has the second highest traffic fatality rate in all of Texas....Is that true, or did I hear wrong?

Ripley's is awesome! at any age level.

I don't think that they are calling for legalizing "dope", so much as decriminalizing it. We spend billions each year fighting the war on drugs with no real effect. We spend billions more locking up the perps, to what extent? There is always someone to take their place. Education is the answer, not prison.

Legalizing drugs or decriminalizing it as LEL just said is a very old plank and a belief of the Libertarians as I recall. They believe that people should be accountable when they take drugs and not go out and drive under the influence and so on in the same fashion as buying and drinking alcohol. They believe that government stays out of it unless the person violates a law in some other way. So is that a liberal view or is that a conservative view? Perhaps it is a uniquely Libertarian view? We know this, Americans love their drugs and alcohol almost as much as they love their guns, not paying taxes and going to war.

I know this dates me; but, I exercised on TV with Jack LaLanne in the 60's and 70's. I thought he would surely live to 100. I feel 2012 may indeed be the end.

I wouldn't have a cat in my house! I know people who have up to 10. YUK!!!

That hey now is gross. Her right side is higher than the left and it just looks bad. YUCK!

Wish I could nap. I've been retired over 6 months now; and, haven't taken a nap yet. I need to go back to work. Anybody need a retail person 2-3 days a week?

The DFW Ripley's Museum is one of the best - it put the Branson, MO museum to shame (IMO). Great for kids of all ages. =)

The judgment of pot smokers became suspect when they first tried an illegal recreational drug. That judgment became more untrustworthy when they continued to smoke, buy or sell, and now proselytize for that same, and still illegal, recreational drug. With almost no exceptions, American pot smokers complaining that it's illegal have never indulged in it legally.

Decriminalization of drugs worked in Portugal. Their government spends about 10% of the old Drug War budget on rehabilitating. Conservatives, with their "holier than thou attitude" just don't get it.

Glad Perry doesn't have anything to do but pander to a bucnh of overweight Baptist women who want to tell others how to live their lives.

I am well beyond the age of needing one, or anyone in my family needing one: part of me wants Roe v Wade to be overturned.
Think of all the people who will either be put out of work or having nothing to do.

If abortion is murder (and I am not there yet)why haven't we charged the woman with murder for hire instead of putting all the onus on the doctor providing a service?

The famous William F. Buckley who I think has always been classed as "conservative", tried pot "legally" by going off shore of the US of A. He stayed conservative, but as I recall thought marijuana should be legalized.

Egad, still sharing her opinion like people are suppose to care. Pfft...

1019 - Define "worked."

Anonymous said...

"worked" = decline in illegal drug use among teens, decline in HIV infections resulting from needle sharing, fewer drug related deaths, increase in people seeking addiction treatment. That doesn't count the financial savings from law enforcement priorities, etc.

There was a Cato study a while back that's not hard to find discussing the impact of Portugal's decriminalization. It's worth noting that there are real differences between Portugal and the US that might cause problems for an American decriminalization on Portugal's scale, but it's worth thinking about.

wordkyle said...

1224 - Some points: The Cato study downplays Portugal's increase in illicit drug use after decriminalization in the 15-24 age group. (Page 14.) The decline was only for a portion of that group.

The group Cato repeatedly cites, the EMCDDA, reports that Portugal has one of the highest rates of newly diagnosed HIV infections attributable to injected drug use. (However, the rate is declining for the entire EU.)

The same source reports that Portugal has one of the highest death rates in the EU from HIV/AIDS due to drug use.

I'm only addressing these specific points, as there are many various aspects to the issue. But on these, there you go.

Barry, what's wrong with making the woman hear the heartbeat?

Anonymous said...

Abortion is not murder only because the US government says it is not. But the US government is not the final authority on that matter, is it?

The Dr. recently in the news for the unlicensed abortion clinic is going to be charged with infant murders.

Anonymous said...

People who do not believe in abortion should be required to adopt the otherwise aborted children no matter what is wrong with the child.

I bet you will change your mind then.

Hello common sense.

Anonymous said...

2:40, Your comment is not common sense. It is way over on the stupid side.

Anonymous said...

Yep. I am sure every woman would love to hear that heart beat of a child conceived by rape / incest. Glad y’all are on top of this and have such open minds. It is kind of funny though; all you idiots want the government/Perry to tell a lady what to do. Are y’all campaigning for the socialist party?

I don't want to take care of my elderly parents, so can I just kill them or send them to your house?

That wa the most idiotic statement I believe that I have read on this blog, and there have been a lot of them.

2:40 So you want someone else to pay for that persons actions? Hmmmm....I think I see a trend with that line of thinking.

What prtion of the current abortions are from rape or incest? What most commone sense folks disagree with is the abortion as a method of birth control. When a woman is a victem of a crime like that, the pregnancy would be cruel. But so is the murder of the defenseless child.

Anonymous said...

Only 1% of all abortions are associated with rape and incest and 6% are for health reasons (child or mother). The other 93% are for convenience only. Very inconvenient for the child I would say.

let's move on, shall we?

So if the fetus is a human from the moment the sperm hits the egg than all those on the pill are guilty of murder. I have to say the catholic church at least is not a hypocrite on this. To all you others, if your on the pill you are most likely a murderer. Read the material. The pill just keeps the fertilized egg from securing to the uterus. Same as the abortion doctors knife! Thank goodness I didn't buy into this or I'd probably have ten kids and be on welfare. But I really find it hard to understand the difference! Oh I get it... You didn't go to a clinic??? Yep hope all the right to lifers are using the rhythm method or condoms because if not you are a MURDERER!!

Anonymous said...

We got no money... So who should pay for these sonograms???? He is an idiot!

Anonymous said...

Is there anything going on this weekend in Sundance Square for the Superbowl gathering?

Anonymous said...

2:40 - I DID adopt my children!
7:57 The pregnant woman should pay for the sonogram.
7:55 - You obviously have anger issues. Not all people who are against abortion are religious fanatics, as you seem to believe in your ranting. From a BIOLOGICAL viewpoint (I am not religious), I believe that there is life at conception.

Anonymous said...

I too believe life begins at conception, but I also believe it's MY choice as a woman whether I want to be burdened with a child or not, and ESPECIALLY with a special-needs one. My body, my choice, any time, any day. I totally support abortion for any reason. It's a woman's right. And no, the kid doesn't have rights to do anything to MY body that I don't want to occur. Period. I totally agree with 2:40.

Mr. Mike Honcho said...

I am not a woman and some would say that because of that my opinion doesn't count.

But if a sperm fertilizes an egg and the woman does nothing to interfere with the natural process, then a human is born months later. Seems like the instant of conception marks the beginning of life to me.

"Every time the abortion issue comes up it causes the "every life is precious" comments to flow. Did you ever notice those uttering "every life is precious" are the same one that say a life that can't find work and seeks government assistance, is a leach on society."
This was a BG comment last year. Right on.

I am a wee bit late to this debate but it is NEVER a good idea for the government to be allowed to dictate the medical procedure any patient should be "required" to endure. It is not a medical necessity for a woman to undergo a sonogram prior to an abortion. What is next, the state dictating that a woman have her tubes tied or a hysterectomy after she has an abortion? While the government is at it, a law should be passed requiring the "baby daddy" of any aborted fetus should be required to have a vasectomy.

Government has no right being in the middle of ANY medical decisions being made regarding legal medical procedures. The highest court in the US, a country that proudly claims to be a nation of laws and personal freedom, has determined it is LEGAL for a woman to voluntarily undergo an abortion.

If you do not like abortion then do not have an abortion and stay out of other people's business.
