This Photo Doesn't Do The Height Of That Crane Justice

This was this taken in Decatur this morning. I'm not sure what is going on.

I'll guess that platform is 70' high. It's higher than the "castle" looking toppings on the courthouse sides.

Side note: I've walked in that courthouse over a thousand times, and I never do not look up and admire it.

Edit; This is what they were putting up.

That's a boom, skippy. Not a crane.

It's installing a lighted "Sugar Baby" sign on the new candy, shakes, sodas, etc. business on the square--where Memory Lane used to be.

It is not even a big crane/boom either.

8:51 AM Edit--it reads "Hey Sugar" instead of "Sugar Baby"!

Will be good for the dentists...think of all the cavities. That's all we needed was a big candy store...how stupid.

That is a lift or a boom. Not a crane.

“Hey Sugar” sounds like something you’d hear on Harry Hines. Keep it classy Decatur.

There are several Hey Sugar stores. The nearest I know of is in Roanoke. It's a cool little store with lots of unique and retro candies, sodas, and other treats.

I guess those who feel it's "stupid" or not "classy" can just avoid the place. Seems simple enough.

Forced perspective - in the hands of a good photographer, it can be a powerful tool. But mostly it just shows up to ruin pictures people take on their phones.

Just installing the sign for the next business that will go belly up on the square.

@10:42 - Have you been to the square lately? Many of those stores are booming with customers. Often there are waiting lines to get a seat in the restaurants.

By often do you mean when there's a jury trial?

I guess that sign is different, maybe why it scares you!

That’s because they have no place to park on the square hahaha.

A couple of you guys are just ‘Negative Nancy’ aren’t you? Businesses around the square look prosperous & not the least bit stupid.

I hate to say that technically the self proclaimed "genius" actually is correct, that is a crane. It's what the sign installers use they call them boom trucks. They attach a basket onto the end of it so it doubles as a boom lift and a crane. By the looks of it, it's probably a 30ton.

GEEZ O PETE! BIG DEAL HE CALLED A BOOM A CRANE. I SWEAR SOME OF YOU FELLERS GOTTA PICK APART EVERY WORD THAT GREEN TYPES. AND I WILL BE DAMNED THAT ONCE ONE FELLER MENTIONS IT THEN ALL THE OTHERS GOTTA PILE ON TOP WITH THE BOOM THIS AND BOMM THAT! HELL YOUR LUCKY HE CAN STILL PUT WORDS TOGETHER AT ALL SO GET OFF HIS BUTT!

3:38 - With all due respect, I don't think anyone is picking apart Green's words. That would require a cherry picker. And we don't have one of those. All we have is a boom... Or maybe a crane...

(We also have a hot water heater. But that's a different story.)

hotwaterheater is all one word

Not really

Why heat hot water?

If you’re from anywhere but Decatur it does 1:44. The only decent place is the Masonic lodge.

All them businesses on the square are doing so horribly I had to drive around twice to find a parking spot. Personally, I don't think the candy store will last, but I'm sure my wife and I will do our best to singlehandedly (doublehandedly?) keep them in business.
