Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

  • I have no idea how you stop the propensity of bomb threats these days.
  • I suspect most of you have never heard of talk show host Dennis Prager, but I discovered him on 660-AM after Mark Davis moved there. I've never heard anyone who considers himself an expert on so many subjects when he is the poster boy for the opposite. He has a relationship hour every week (despite being on wife #3), and a happiness hour (although he never laughs and can't believe anyone could enjoy the Jon Stewart Show).
  • I don't think I've ever heard of more complaints about Bridgeport police being aggressive than I have in the last two years. And by "aggressive" I mean profiling people and stopping them on minor traffic violations in order to search their car.
  • I agree, the Obama Administration is trying to play on the fears of the American public on this sequestration thing about as much as the Bush Administration did on the "War on Terror". Both are the Politics Of Fear.
  • From today's Update: "UNITED WAY CELEBRATES RECORD YEAR — For the first time in its history, the United Way of Wise County distributed more than half-a-million dollars to its member agencies. But donations will need to grow this year in order to keep up with the growing needs of the agencies, said UWWC Executive Director Martin Woodruff. The United Way’s budget will fall in 2013 by more than $108,000." What the heck does that mean? They need more money but have shrunk their budget?
  • I read a book in college called The Day Christ Died which has always stuck with me. It was written from an historical perspective instead of spiritual. That is, it focused on things like how fast Christ's trial was, how it occurred before dawn, and that crosses back in the day were actually "T" shaped (and about six feet tall) instead of "t" shaped.
  • And still a monstrous snake on the courthouse square from about five years ago is an amazing sight.
  • Miss Teen Delaware had a very embarrassing day yesterday. That is, if you think "sex tape" and "resigns" is part of an embarrassing day.
  • We are headed to Destin, Florida on Spring Break, and I'm already thinking outside the box. I've never been to that part of the country. Road trip suggestions? Anything in Mississippi that is a must see?
  • I'm a huge fan of Google Docs. I can't tell you how much stuff I keep "in the clouds."
  • Chuck Hagel is our new defense secretary. If I understand the Far Right correctly, Israel may be attacked by Iran today.
  • The craziest thing to get your head around is Dennis Rodman visiting North Korea and Kim Jong Un.
  • Sports: ESPN projects that no team from Texas will be in the March Madness tournament. Of all the schools, Baylor should be embarrassed.
  • Baylor's football coach is finally on Twitter. His second tweet ever yesterday: "The Bears finished up winter conditioning with a big dance off this morning to the stanky leg!!" My head just exploded.

Speaking of shrinking budgets, does anyone know what the Young PTO budget issue is?

It is so hard for you liberals to keep Bush's name out of things when your liberal President messes up. It's always someone else fault.

Vacation to Florida: Drive. Its a long trip, but worth it. Cruising down the A1A is greatness! Flora-Bama in Pensacola is awesome.

Personally, I think going to Follet's Island is better. The Bluewater Highway runs from The Village of Surfside to Galveston, and Christmas Bay is great for fishing.

I couldn't agree more BG, but doesn't this just seem weird to you. After soundly kicking our arse in the elections, why does the BO admin want to take a page out of the Republican play book?

I guess that whole 9/11 thing must have been some silly dream I had.

Meanwhile, I have yet to see a vulnerable child or elderly person die because of a cut in a planned spending increase.

Bush's fear-mongering involved something a lot more concrete, Barry.

You are right about Bridgeport PD being overly agressive, especially Manoushagian! He's another Tom Bishop wanna be!

Yeah, that Bush "War on Terror" thing was based on a bunch of nothing, wasn't it? For Liberals, every day is September 10th.

Obama's talk on the sequester, on the other hand, actually is based on nothing. Despite talk of "cuts," spending will rise by trillions of dollars over the next few years. Government will have to grow more slowly than the politicians want -- that, to them, is a cut.
***
And you can bet that the enthusiasm for an attack on Israel is much greater with Hagel as SoD. So much for another of America's dwindling number of allies.

Because it works...at least in the short-term. Republicans have been successfully using that strategy for decades.

On the other hand, the "all brown people are lazy and trying to destroy our country" approach is not quite as successful.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast is a beautiful place - if you are looking at the water. I am from there. In July 2005, I made the trip from the Bay St Louis Bridge to the Bilox-Ocean Springs bridge along the coast and was amazed that there were only a couple of places still showing signs of Hurrican Camille (August 1969). A month after my drive, Katrina obliterated the entire area and much more. People often say Katrina ruined New Orleans, but it was the levees that failed New Orleans. Katrina blew and washed away other parts of Louisiana and most of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. As you drive by the Casinos, everywhere that you see almost nothing along the highway - there used to be homes and businesses. Where you see something new - it is new and expensive and expensive to insure. If you see something old - It amazingly survived. Over 95% of the beachfront structures were destroyed by Katrina. So, if you just want to see where there is now nothing and there used to be a lot, drive Highway 90 from Waveland to Ocean Springs. Also think about the fact that the entire length of that drive was under water for a few of hours, and battered by winds for a few hours more on one day - August 29, 2005. If you get bored, anyway.

-You stop bomb threats by throwing the little shits responsible for them in jail for a few years. I'm sick of kids acting like dumbasses and getting a pass because "We were all young once and did dumb things."
-Prager is about like listening to paint dry... It's even worse than watching it dry.
-If people cared to read the constitution every now and then they'd realize the 4th amendment is pretty awesome and they don't have to consent to any searches!!! HOLY CRAP what a concept!!! Or better yet, don't commit any infractions driving and you don't get pulled over.
-Politicians in general play on people's fears. They know their constituencies, for the most part, are ill-informed on any issue that's in the news and the media will take care of it for them. A person is smart; people are dumb.
-Most people don't know it was a "T" and not a "t" upon which Christ was crucified. The "t" came about to crucify people upside down, which, if you can believe it, was said to be even more painful.
-Snakes are very peculiar creatures.
-Ms. Delaware was probably a sweet little girl and was just young and naive enough to believe the douchebag boyfriend of hers wouldn't release something like that. Talk to your daughters folks. Better yet, raise your boys to act like men.
-Take I-20 through LA to Jacksonville, MS, then take Hwy 49 south to Hattiesburg, then take Hwy 98 south to Mobile before getting on I-10 east. Roads in LA blow and this way you'll get to see more I MS. There's not a lot going on around the coast down there since Katrina anyway.
-I love all the Internet memes of Un captioned with something regarding food.
-Dancing at a Baptist school huh? I'll be damned.

Anonymous said...

If you go through Vicksburg there are all the civil war battlefields. But that is the longer way. Going to Shreveport LA then on I-49 is faster and better roads. In Biloxi there is Jefferson Davis' house. It was rebuilt after Katrina. In Mobile the Alabama is interesting.

I got pulled over for a missing headlight in Denton. The cop said, "You been drinking, I smell alcohol." He didn't search himself, but made me lift up stuff on the seats and in the floorboard, so he could see that I wasn't hiding anything. And I hadn't drank in over 24hrs. Then, I got pulled over again the next night for the same, without any harassment. I decided to fix my light. These guys take that seriously.

Obammy is playing on my fears by actually releasing no telling how many criminally illegal aliens that were incarcerated and waiting to be deported even before the sequester took effect. Every American, whatever political persuasion should be highly upset about this. That's odd. I'm in Bridgeport most days, I see officers most days, but I have yet to be pulled over. I feel somehow neglected.

Medved is the guy to listen to on 660, always has been.

I have 4th amendment RIGHTS and Id love a cop to challenge them. They've tried before, but it always ends up being a waste of everyone's time.

That begs the question; for those that don't mind the Gestapo searching their car at any time do you not have a life? Just because I'm not guilty of something does not mean I want my time wasted, in fact its a big argument NOT to waste my time.

You fucking blue hairs want to get frisked all day the go down to the PD and volunteer for it. The rest of us law abiding citizens have Constitutional Rights that should not be violated due to budgetary short falls.

I even actually like reading your opinion and giving it some thought before I dismiss it as liberal nonsense. The quote above is a new low for you. The analogy is not well thought out. Your normal comments seems like you gave thought to your opinion and didn't regurgitate some liberal talking point. Barry, you can do much better than this.

Has anyone said Vicksburg yet? They'd be right. Amazing battle, impressive memorials. The Union Army tried to alter the course of the Mississippi River just to avoid the heights. And after they lost, Vicksburg didn't celebrate the 4th of July for about 100 years. Now that's holding a grudge! Seriously, Vicksburg is a must-see, even if you only do the quickie road tour of the monuments.

Double Fake Professor Stanley

The USS Alabama is OK. It's impressive if you're into that kind of thing. I am, but the LL family most likely isn't and in that case it's a waste of time or money. The USS Drum is pretty cool, though. I could not have been a submariner, that's for sure. I'm OK with small spaces (just ask WK's mom), but if you can't stand up straight for months at a time, that's a problem.

Decatur police don't recognize or acknowledge the 4th Amendment at all. A very good friend of mine can attest to this.
They will search everything on you. Phone, computer, papers, etc. Things that are guaranteed private by the 4th Amendment.

I think 1:19 hit on a key issue. When police departments are focused more on generating revenue than on protecting and serving their community, then you've got a problem. Small town PD's in Wise County are no exception.
