My Generation's Pearl Harbor

A fascinating collection of newspaper front pages from that day are here. I remember walking into the office that day and saying, in a tone of voice I'm not sure I've uttered since then, "I think we are under attack!" And, for today, a replaying of a commercial:

I remember that I was working in the City Center towers in downtown Fort Worth. As I was pulling into the garage, they started talking about it but they were mentioning that it was a Cessna. We went inside and watched it on a TV and saw the second plane hit.

Was at work and a friend told me to go to the cafeteria to see what was happening on the TV.....was kind of in my own world because had lots of plans that day as it was my daughter's 1st birthday and we were celebrating that nite. Not wanting to celebrate so much at that point. We did go eat but all our thoughts were on what was happening. My daughter, turning 8 today, now knows what happened that day. I saved newspapers and laminated them so I could tell her about it. We have prayer every year for everyone on her birthday.

Meet me at Frilly's this evening at 6:30 to receive your bitch-slap.

Then I'll buy you a beer.

I was living in Salt Lake City ~ I turned on the TV and saw the smoke coming from the first tower. My first thought was that they were filming a movie or something. Not 30 seconds later I saw the second plane hit.

I surrounded my house with sandbags and loded up the M-2 .50 cal I kept in my garage specifically for this eventuality and stood in my yard waiting for the Russians to start dropping from the sky, Red Dawn style.

Damn commies.

I cant watch that Bud commercial. Every time I see it I get upset. It makes me want to go over to Iraq and kill innocent women and children (They should have seen me coming). Those bastards are hiding WMD's because George W. told me so. And damn it !!! Somebody gotta pay but don't worry ... I will have idiots back home like Wordbile to defend my actions

Innocent women and children? They should have thought of that before they became Iraqi.

Get some

Word to your mother

Surely 9:50 meant to say an ole fashion ass-whoopin. Nobody drinks old fashions anymore.

9:50 must already be drunk. Either that or he types with his palms. Like a chimp.

i was in 6th grade in mrs. vinzant's class around 2:00 in the afternoon before i even found out that SOMETHING was happening, just didnt know what. she said she wasn't allowed to tell us but i knew something was up because they kept calling kids over the intercom to go to the office because their parents were there to pick them up.

the next day, i was in mrs matzinger's class for social studies and we listened to that song.."cuz im proud to be an american, where atleast i know im free and i proudly stand up next to you...."

I was at work in the Navy Yard in Washington D.C. When the plane hit the Pentagon someone ran into our office and yelled, "The Pentagon's been hit!" We ran to the corner of the building and saw the first plume of smoke come up. I went home about 6pm and there were machine guns on every corner of the base. The only things in the air were birds and F-16s.

The weird thing was I couldn't call my wife because of the phone line congestion. I had to call my mother in Decatur to pass the word I was ok.

Probably more than you've made in your lifetime, 8:18.

The area outside the Navy Yard is dangerous. Stay off the green line.

You would have to look long and hard to find a better example of the weird mix of sophistication and bass akwardness prevalent in middle eastern society and individual thought than the 9/11 attacks

The goal of taking out the towers was to destroy our economy AND destroy iconic landmarks.

Very few Americans I believe could tell you much about WTC and there importance prior to 911. They were backdrops to a few movies and visible in pictures of the skyline but, psychologically- not that important.

After the first attack in 1993 millions of dollars were spent to insure nothing was too centralized - precisely to prevent an economic catastrophe in case of total loss of WTC.

The attackers did some internet searches based on what they wanted to accomplish and came up with WTC without understanding Americas soul, heart and basic business and political realities.

But,they could pull off something with such shocking skill, audacity, intricate planning, secrecy, imagination, daring, brilliance, financial acumen... that it still defies the western imagination.

They should have struck in order of importance,
1) The Whitehouse
2)Capitol Building(if at all possible when Congress in session)3) Statue Of Liberty
4) WTC

I'll bet you if a team of western military leaders, socialogists, pychologists etc were convened to plan this mission for optimal psychological damage they would agree.

I only heard one economist getting national coverage who believed our economy could collapse with the towers. Across the board every economist interviewee and writer was very confident there was enough redundancy in the system (since the 1993 attacks especially) to weather the storm of WTC loss.
