First Down

I spent the day officiating at the The Spirit of Christmas flag football tournament sponsored by the Bridgeport Police Department. I saw two fights, two ejections (one occurring at 8:35 a.m.), one horrific looking dislocated shoulder, Phillip Daugherty, a terrific catch by Joey Christian, a limping Joey Christian, some confused officials (me included), a black guy running fifty yards for a touchdown with his shorts falling off to his knees - and still no one could catch him, a disgruntled DPS team that didn't make the playoffs, a very elusive Andrew Rottner catching a million passes (but I was curious why the Messenger wasn't there to take his picture) and a bunch of money raised for a good cause. And I learned it's kinda fun to blow a whistle.

The Messenger probably wasn't there if it took place in Bridgeport! Also, there might also been a pretty entertaining story come out of it--and we all know how allergic the Messenger is to a REAL story!!

Now if there were any dead bodies to be carried off, then the Mess would have been there and stuck a photo of it on the front page. What a horrible paper!

Nobody forces you to buy their paper. And, to be so bad, they sure win a lot of awards!!!

Anonymous said...

The awards are bogus and don't mean a damn, and I would buy a different paper if I had a choice.

What's the "real" story? The injury? Wonder what coaches think.

Anonymous said...

Horrible? Have you seen what Bridgeport has to offer in the way of a paper?

Accoring the the Update and the stories the Mess runs on the awards, they are awarded by judges from other states, clearly unbias opinions from others than an anonymous Bridgeport resident who is upset because his own hometown paper reeks 'bull'$%@#$^

If you are jealous because Decatur has such a better paper (and you are obviously not happy with your Index), then go by a Chico Texan. HAHA!

As much as our family enjoys the Mess, we also have a small complaint about the paper -- it covers too much Bridgeport.

Hey anon @1:43. You say the awards are bogus. Tell us who you think are the judges of the awards. Do you know? I DO!

Since we are now discussing newspapers and headlines, can anybody tell me what "LIBERALLY LEAN FROM THE LAND OF DAIRY QUEEN" means?

Did I click the wrong link? I thought I was reading comments about a charity flag football tournament rather than a diatribe against the WC Messenger.

Anon. 3:10, the Chico Texan has come a long way in the past few years.

I do believe that the TITLE OF THE STORY IS "FIRST DOWN" not who all can bitch!!! Hats off to the Bridgeport Police and all the other teams that did something for the community. Those that seem to want to bitch over who's paper is better, remember this: THOSE THAT PARTICIPATED IN THE GAMES DID SO FOR THE BETTER GOOD WHILE YOU SAT BACK ARGUING! TYPICAL FOR YOU TYPE OF PEOPLE! You disgruntal people need to take a hike to another country.

The Chico Texan is usually just retread news from the Index - with a Chico name! same people writing, etc...

Oh, and I can tell you as a former Mess employee that there have been more than a couple of times the Index has stolen directly from the Mess...that's called plagiarism...and the Mess awards AREN'T bogus. In fact, most people in the know - and outside of Bridgeport - think the Mess is one of the best papers in the state and/or the country for its size...

Ok, don't make me laugh to hard. The Decatur High School newspaper is much much better than the Mess and it comes out MONTHLY!

Anon 3:18, obviously you haven't looked at a Chico Texan lately. It's front page stuff is always Chico stuff that is not in the Index. I'm proud of our little hometown newspaper. It praises our kids' achievements, which is refreshing b/c the Mess is pretty much the Northwest Gazette. As a parent of Chico students, I know that even when notified the Messenger rarely recognizes our students' achievements. The Texan does what it can, especially when there is not a whole lot in the way of news around Chico. And as for the same people writing...my, that's a bright conclusion, considering that the Index and Texan are the same company, in the same office and therefore have the same staff.

The Mess may not have the BIGTIME stories, but I think it is well worth my 50 cents. That paper has a lot of cities to kep up with, so comparing it to Chico and Bridgeport is not equal. I think for the coverage of all the cities (not to mention all the sports teams we have) that the little staff the Mess has does a great job in my opinion.
Bridgeport and Chico, as someone just said, has the same staff and they cover a whole lot less of our great county, so you should EXPECT alot of things from those two because they have less to cover. Have you seen the Index sports? I live in Bridgeport and I would think as few schools as the Index has to cover, they should do MUCH MUCH more. After football season, the other athletes don't get anything. Thank God for the Mess, and we have been through this every year. My child is a senior and we won't have to worry about that part much more.
As long as the Mess covers emergencies from all over the county, obituaries and that one person sports staff can keep covering the sports for 8 high schools, I will continue to buy the Mess.

I am not a judge of newspapers, so I can't tell you what is bogus and what is not, but they get my award for the thick skin they must have to work there.

DONT WORRY THE MESS JUST BARELY COVERED THE WISE COUNTY TOY RUN AND HECK EVEN THE BIG MEDIA GIANTS CHANNEL 8 TO BE EXACT WOULD RATHER RUNA STORY ABOUT A KIFD WHO CAN EAT A LOT OF HOT DOGS INSTEAD OF ONE ABOUT PEOPLE COMMING TOGATHER TO HELP LITTLE KIDS AT CHRISTMAS CONGRATS TO ALL WHO TOOK PART IN THE EVENT I WOULD HAVE BUT I AM ALREADY UP TO MY NECK IN OTHER THINGS FOR THE SAME CAUSE REMEMBER THJAT IT IS BETTER TO GIVE THAN TO RECEIVE

I think I saw something in there though. The Mess has what, 2 or 3 people to cover every city in the county. Our hometown Index has that many and they still stink at just covering Bridgeport, the only city they should worry about.

Why is every so biter this holiday season? Has the wife been so hard on some of you folks at home that you have to take it out on people that you are to coward to tell them what you think to their face?

It's one thing that you don't wear the pants in the family, but then to come out here and blast people you don't know because it makes you feel good is sickening. But I bet it makes you feel so good.

"Gee Hank, the ol' wife won't leave me well enough alone, but you know, I sure told those people on the computer what I thank. Yeah, me sure did. I am one bad dude huh? Guess I better sing off before me lady catches me on here being a tough guy again."

Why is everyone so bitter? It must be that warm, fuzzy feeling you get from the current presidential administration and the far right wing! (hmmmm)

Looking at the front page of the Messenger today, it is apparent that Joe Duty was in Waco Saturday covering the return of several Wise County soldiers from Iraq. Maybe instead of just spouting off about Bridgeport bias, you should wait until you learn the facts. Oh, by the way, I noticed Joe also made it to Rhome that morning to shoot a parade and then made it back from Waco to shoot the Bridgeport Christmas parade that night. There is a reason he wins so many awards. Also, a note about the Toy Run, it seems the Messenger ran a story before the event, then ran three front page photos from the event and another story on page 2. Seems to be more than just "barely covering it" to me.

I noticed that in my paper today, too!!!
Well, well well, I guess those crying about the Mess not at the football game can now go cry their own river. I think the Mess covered a lot more last weekend than those Bridgeport people who ripped the paper on this thread think. Thank you MESS for thinking about our troops coming home, and still spending your morning and night getting some local happenings.
Thank you for all you do. Bridgeport is just jealous. I wonder if the Index was in Waco on Saturday for the return? Thing that make you go, hmmmmmm.

I think most of the posters on here totally missed the point of this blog. Barry's topic was a charity event that he enjoyed. People came together to raise money for a good cause. Focus on that and not some obscure comment about the Messenger.

if the editor can't bother to check his facts for truth then how could you expect the rest to do so they will destroy anyones reputation just to sell a frigging paper it doesn't matter to old skip whether its true or not i know for a fact he doesn't check facts just prints whatever will sell to hell with peoples reputations feelings or the good they accomplish. lets get em is his motto.when he knows better oh well who reads his old opinion anyway. i won't waste my money
