Random Wednesday Morning Thoughts

  • That wind was insane.
  • Rockwall did not do well:
  • Two cars of weather chasers crashing into each other at an intersection resulting in three deaths is beyond bizarre.
  • A 1939 crystal clear NFL video was floating around yesterday. It is a look back in time.  Tackling without using the head is the way it should be done.
  • The Ticket talked about the old ABA this morning and a book about it. I can't remember who Junior Miller was referring to, but he talked about a section of the book where one of the teams was going to get onto a plane at say 7:00 a.m. and arrive on the West coast at 6:45 a.m. due to the time change. He refused to get on the plane saying, "I'm not getting on no time machine."
  • Let's check in on Trump this morning:
  • I think people being oblivious is now an epidemic.
  • When I'm out at Lake Bridgeport, I could watch ducks for hours. And, man, there are a lot of ducks.

The media SHOULD be ashamed at thereselves. Trump is the President and they have to support the President!

If the NFL would eliminate all padding and helmets , I believe the injury rate would drop dramatically. Think about it.

the ABA player was Marvin "Bad News" Barnes.
Trivia tie-in I:
the only professional basketball game I've ever seen was the Spirits of St. Louis, in 1975, or early '76, so I may have actually seen this guy play. He was with the team until the ABA folded into the NBA.
Trivia II:
Bob Costas was the play-by-play man for the Spirits

God bless President Trump!

The '39 game confirms the need for modern helmets if anything. I saw at least 5 head contacts that could lead to concussion, and one incidence of a player laying on the ground writhing in pain and missing his "leather"! The tackling wasn't any better then, the game was just played bunched up in close quarters. Yes, you shouldn't tackle with the head, but this video proves that 22 guys running around playing tackle leads to many instances of head to head contact! Same today as then.

8:59. LOL! Yeah, I'm sure you felt the same way last year.

@8:59
Sorry my friend, but the job of the press is to shine a light on government, society, corporations, whatever, not to cheerlead.

Now, whether they're doing that in a non-partisan, fair, and balanced manner is a matter of perspective in part - though the outliers on either side of the spectrum certainly don't meet those standards.

859 - I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. But the media should not "support" the President. They should, as much as possible, stay impartial. That being said, for decades the media have been decidedly partial. Obama was unvetted and unchallenged by the media. Mysteries still surround his time in college. His awarding of the Nobel prize for doing nothing should have been met with derision, and the Nobel committee should have been humiliated. The deceit the Democrats pulled regarding Obamacare should have been roundly and universally pointed out. The media supports and endorses Liberal Democrat policies.

Trump, on the other hand, faced media attacks from the moment he won the election. The media promoted attacks on Sarah Palin and other Conservative females. Racist attacks on black Conservatives are presented as "news," with no comment on the racism.

The media use polls as a way to generate their own version of the news. News headlines and reports slant a particular direction. Poll questions are designed around those news stories. News-conscious people, responding in a normal manner, confirm the story the media want, and that's reported as news. And if the results of the survey don't jibe with Liberal desires, then the actual results are minimized, while Liberally-Leaning details are emphasized.

The media should not support anything. Their historical mission has been to provide accurate, impartial information. That, of course, has never happened, and is not happening now.

It was nice watching a video replay of hard nosed football without a bunch of idiots jumping around, celebrating and trying to make up their own move for Madden. I bet back then they made what is equivalent to what arena football players make now.

Anonymous said...

9:22, you've never really played football, then, if you think today's athletes and game are the same as back then. You can have a 300+ pound lineman today that is faster than anyone on the field back then, and when he lays into you at full speed, you're done if you aren't big enough to take it--bigger than anyone on the field back then, too. Today's game is much more wide open and much faster. The hits are harder, mostly because the pads and especially the helmets give an illusion of safety. Rugby has much fewer injuries, with some big boys on the field, mostly because they have to be under more control when they tackle (you can't dive in rugby), and can't lead with the head. But mostly, because you don't have a helmet, you don't want to.
I was injured far more often playing football, and caused more injuries, than when I played rugby. Anyone who thinks that rugby is rougher because there are no pads is an idiot.

8:59, was it the media's job to cheer on Obama? Or were they just the LIEberal media to you back then?

I think 8:59s use of the word "thereselves" might be the hint that it's sarcasm. At least I hope it is! :-)

Anonymous said...

Pretty sure you've never played rugby.

Anonymous said...

Played from 3rd grade all the way through 4 years of D2 ball.

I didn't say the game was the same, I said when you have that many people on a field head hits happen. That is as true today as it was then. I played with several people who went on to the NFl, I'm quite aware of the modern game. I was commenting on the video and how the game played then was violent too, it wasn't rugby, it wasn't modern football, but it was violent nonetheless. Head hits happened in football then. They weren't as violent because of the style of play and the quality of athletes, but they happened frequently. I was pointing out that misnomer and not debating whether modern football should become rugby or some previous version of itself. Learn to read jackass!!!

We've been living in an echo chamber for quite some time. Characterizing it as obliviousness, I think might be missing the point.

The difference between the current administration and the previous administration is while the former President mostly limited his complaints to Fox News, and the hacking of the occassional CBS reporter (see Sheryl Atkinson), Our current commander-in-chief, seems more than eager to call shenanigans on the industry as a whole.

Aside from local news in the morning before work, about the only channel I can handle for actual news coverage is OANN.

I do enjoy some of the editorial shows on the major networks. I think that is also part of where the disconnect lies. Rush Limbaugh and Rachel Maddow aren't members of the media per se. They are pundits who spend their entire broadcasts editorializing.

Rush is at least honest about it, Maddow probably is too. But honestly, can anyone say with a straight face that they consider Matthews, Hannity, Sharpton, etc... members of the media?

And Bias is nothing new. We just have more sources and more venues to talk about it, i.e. this here blog. Which I thoroughly enjoy.

The world hasn't entered into idiocracy. We've always been there. Working back I would say the last group of politicians to have a clue was Bush 41 and the Democratic Congress. Read up on the Omnibus Budget Reconcilliation Act of 1990.

It's what cost Bush reelection, and provided the cannon fodder for the Clintonistas and House Republicans of the mid 1990's to be able to claim credit for the Budget Surpluses during those years.

That being said, budget surplus is a misnomer in that we still weren't generating enough revenue to pay the growing interest on, what was then considered a crippling national debt. But we looked o.k. during the fiscal years.

Sadly it was the party of fiscal responsibility, that let the law lapse in 2002.

I'm hoping with the Current President's business acumen, someone might remind him of the successes behind that law and we can get back on the right track.

The story of the storm chasers crashing into each other reminds me of the story I read last week of the man that invented the speed bump dying of a heart attack in an ambulance on the way to the hospital. The ambulance driver said that he probably would have lived if they had gotten to the hospital sooner but they had to slow down for all the speed bumps.

Tell me about biased media. They really should get on board and support the leaders of a country, not just yammer about their duty to report factually. When I ordered all the first born children put to death, the newspapers jumped all over me. They never tried to view it through my eyes. Just biased. I feel for you, Donald.
