Speaking Of My Random Thought On Self-Driving Cars . . .

"More than 20 Austin police officers on Wednesday are scouring Interstate 35 in North Austin for distracted drivers.

"Members of the Austin Police Department’s Highway Enforcement Unit boarded a city bus around 7 a.m. near Interstate 35 and Parmer Lane and took to the highway to act as spotters for a swarm of officers on motorcycles to catch drivers using cell phones on the road."

A whole lot of manpower in Austin would be eliminated in a world of self-driving cars. (Side note: When did Austin transform from a place a for hippies to a police state?)

Give me the list. Give me the list of the 50 or 100 people that you approve to suddenly die on the roads in the Austin area over the next year because some idiot drifts across a center line while "liking" something on Facebook while driving. Good for the cops. It needs to stop. Saving lives is OK with me, even if it's the idiot's life that is saved. Pretty easy not to be bothered by cops in this world. For me, NOTHING about this country looks like a "police state". Maybe it's because I'm not driving around with PCP in my car, or going after anybody with my gun, or whatever.

I can think of at least 100 I approve of, I get the list out ASAP!

I'm suspicious of to much policing, but the distracted driving thing has gotten out of control. I support what the APD is doing.

Have you ever been driving along on (generic local highway) at about 70mph in the left lane, when you come up behind somebody doing 5-10mph below the speed limit? And you notice they're drifting from one side of the lane to the other? Then you pass them on the right, and see they've got their eyes glued to a cell phone screen. Occasionally, you'll find that it's somebody merely talking on their phone, which means they're incapable of talking and driving at the same time.
Sometimes, they'll be in the right lane, but they seem to prefer the left. Probably because they get spooked by vehicles passing next to their window on the left, but I'm just guessing there.
These people are dangerous because they AREN'T PAYING ATTENTION to what's happening around them. They're probably more dangerous than the average dumb driver who generally doesn't have much sense of what's going on a hundred yards ahead or even right next to them.
If you believe self-driving cars are the solution to this problem, then welcome to the Idiocracy state.
Oh, and have you heard about this computer hacking craze? Suppose somebody hacked into a whole system of self-driving cars and had them all turn left simultaneously?

When did Austin transform from a place a for hippies to a police state?

Alex, is it "What's the natural outcome in a liberal utopia?"

They are rarely just policing for "distracted drivers" and are using this program, with help of license plate readers, to round up people with warrants, locate stolen vehicles, etc. Just a smokescreen so the public doesn't get upset about mass surveillance.

There are always those that bitch about the police, even when the try to do low level enforcement so as to reduce their chances of shooting thugs.

3:34, If you think there isn't mass surveillance all around you, then you better stay locked in your house because now days there are cameras everywhere. How do you think they caught the Mooslum pressure cooker bomber in New York? Oh, and by the way, good job Homeland Security. His father had reported him two years earlier because of his anti-American feelings.

I wish someone would tritter feed every Fn things lawyers are doing all day so we could hate on them like the public criticizes the cops.

is it illegal to be distracted while driving? I know some municipalities have made it illegal to use electronic devices while driving, EVEN THOUGH I SUPPORT THAT, I don't see how it can be deemed illegal? POLICE have more damn gizmos in their car to distract them than an astronaut, but I'm guessing they have a lot of training (sarcasm)

Is the police state proposition still up for debate? Like Global warming?

I don't know what the big deal is all about. As long as the police leave me alone, I don't care what they do to you.

Did I say I didn't think mass surveillance was all around me? What the F are you reading...I was just pointing out how the general public usually gets in a tizzy over such things. Learn to read!!!

They need the (gizmos) so they can keep up with the idiots and the people that have warrants out on them > Got one pay up , can't really hide ! the driver that pisses me off the most is the one you are waiting o pass you at a stop sign then turn right next to you talking on their phones !!

Good. Probably saving a life. We'll never know of course, because the life or lives will have been spared, not taken.

If someone behind you is texting while driving, can you defend yourself against being killed by that driver? Self defense apply? If someone came up behind you pointing a gun at you, you could. What about a car that can kill you just as easily, and with the same malice of forethought, or dereliction of responsibility?

When did Austin transform from a place a for hippies to a police state?

When they hired Art Acevedo.

Thought out like a true liberal thinker...the new world mantra -anything goes until somebody gets hurts.
Go where the wind blows unless a tornado destroys your life.
Love everybody unless they disagree with your self serving thought process.

Whatever Barry.. you know they say keep Austin weird...that was brought about by people like you. Liberals that now complain because they are weird in every police type way. The problem I have with you liberal weenies is that when you get what you want (Hitlery) you'll begin the bitching before the conservatives have a chance. Then you call them out the moment they say anything...get a grip on something besides scotch and your friends ole lady.........

I drove through it yesterday morning. It was overkill. there were way more than 20, probably double that just driving south into town.

As an austinite, this is great. This city is rife with self-entitled "I need it nows" who can't wait five minutes to look at their phones.

What happens when you brake check
a car with no driver ? What is the lag time ?
