The Campaign For DA

Random Tuesday Morning Thoughts

  • I'm late on this, but that Planned Parenthood shooting was insane. A dead cop. A dead veteran. But Ted Cruz was quick to point out that this had nothing to do with abortion, "Well, it's also been reported that he was registered as an independent and a woman and transgendered leftist activist, if that's what he is." Good lord, man.
  • The Chicago shooting of the teenager by a police officer -- shooting him 16 times -- went under the radar since the shocking video was released over the Thanksgiving holidays.
  • I'm feeling better.  Mrs. LL referred to me as being "under the weather". I hadn't heard that phrase in forever. (And I think the Dogs In The House know when I'm sick. And maybe even that mean Cat.)
  • Why are Wise County Deputies doing traffic stops on 287 and in the Southern part of the county? Something seems odd.
  • Who would have thought that Lake Bridgeport would be two feet over its level in December?
  • The Senior in House playing her flute upstairs is a beautiful sound.
  •  “The simple and undeniable fact is the overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats” - Ted Cruz during an interview on Monday. “There’s a reason why the Democrats for years have been viewed as soft on crime,” Cruz continued. “The Democrats know convicted felons tend to vote Democrat.”  When did Ted Cruz go insane? Or is he just trying to out-Trump Trump?
  • I said it two months ago. You are watching the implosion of the GOP. The Republicans need a new face to save that party.
  • What happened to Carter Haynie, 27, of Bridgeport who is mentioned in the obits in the Update?
  • The end of the Cleveland/Baltimore game last night was beyond entertaining.
  • I watched the Charlie Brown Christmas Special last night for what might have been the first time in 20 years. I had forgotten how smartly written it was (and how Snoopy was an incredible character in the  background.)]
  • \------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • (That was done by the Rescued Dog In The House as I was trying to hit the "Publish" button)

"The Republicans need a new face" - Well, the last two presidential elections had what your side considered the best Republican candidates, and they both lost to the worst president in history. Maybe we should go with someone you guys don't like. (And note that a few years ago I pointed out that any Republican you can't call "stupid" you call "crazy." You guys are so predictable.)

If you are justified to shoot once, you are justified to shoot more until the threat is gone. From what I saw, the bad guy was still moving and holding the knife, so he was justified to keep shooting.
Or maybe he was moving because the bullets were hitting him.

8:57 that's great info. Where did you find that?

Cope passing out tickets today? If you do not know this then here are the facts. During bad weather cops do not want to get out of their cars in the cold, rain and snow. So that is the time for you to speed if you want to. After several days of bad weather they are behind on passing out their quota so when the rain stops and the sky is sunny, you need to watch out and obey the traffic laws because they will be trying to catch up on their average "tickets per day". If the sun comes out this afternoon then test my theory.

It may have something to do with the risk of standing on a wet slick highway passing out tickets.

I fully support Cruz getting the nomination, because I also think he'll get crushed in the general election. And hopefully a sound drubbing will effectively end his 15 minutes of fame, and he'll move on to just being the junior senator from Texas who periodically says stupid things.

Uhh, take a look at the economy and the number of American troops dying on any given day (0!) Wordy, and tell me Obama is the worst. Then, let's look at the economy he was handed and compare it to today, and tell me that someone, oh, let's say GWB, who was handed a better economy to start and where it ended up, and you tell me Obama is the worst.

You simply cannot get through a day without your anger about a black man in the Oval Office, and lying every time you open your mouth about politics, can you?

I'll just take a stab at it and say...because Southern Wise is still a part of the county, that is until they vote for secession. Your assumption is that they should ignore traffic in some section or roadway of their designated area of responsibility?

Also, there was an article in the S-T yesterday or Sunday about the refugee problem in Europe. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, on behalf of the EU, was urging Turkey to stem the flow of immigrants entering their country. She said they wanted to stop illegal immigration, and work on legal migration. Specifically, to vet Syrians fleeing war, and turn back others who were migrating due to poverty.
They want to stop illegal immigration. Legal immigrants only with legitimate reasons for entering their countries. Sounds familiar. Does anyone in this country have a problem with their policy? Because it's the same one we've been trying to enforce here, with little success

I agree that Republicans need better candidates (and much better platforms). But the same goes for Democrats. Our choices from either party are pathetic - and don't seem to be getting any better. Maybe the Hispanic twins from San Antonio or Elizabeth Warren or Bloomberg but they're not likely this election. The Tea Party hold on Repubs dooms them nationally until reasonable choices emerge.

What does that leave? The second amendment, religious issues, self responsibility. Is it popular to tell the millions who are on the teat, that they need to be responsible? Kinda funny isn't it?

I believe Cruz will win the nomination and will beat Hillary.
You believe that a conservative can't win but you are judging that from the last 2 presidential election cycles. McCain and Romney are not true conservatives. Cruz is. The key to a Republican win is a true conservative. You are expecting the conservatives to stay home again. If a true conservative is the nominee, Hillary loses big.

9:38 - I'm not sure if you are a black person or a white person with horrible guilt, but the truth is that you cannot own up to the fact that this President is not only politically misguided, he is a terrible President. Since you can't bear to think that about the President in those terms, then those of us who can, must be racist. While I would agree that there are people in our country that don't like him because he is black, (sorta), the huge majority just don't like him as a politician. End of story.

Obama is the worst President in the History of the Country and it doesn't have a flippin' thing to do with his race. He cut a backdoor deal LBJ would have been proud of to get a national healthcare package shoved down the throats of every working American, thereby making it harder on them and waaaaayyyy cushier on those that don't work (while increasing the true unemployment numbers as a byproduct because many small companies are so adversely impacted by the program that they have to cut jobs in order to survive), he has used the IRS as a political tool to punish his foes and even those who disagree with him, he has made such an extravagant use of the Executive Order mechanism that he has seen it challenged in Court and he has made an absolute mess out of foreign relations. Pointing to the economy as a gauge of his prowess as Commander in Chief is like saying a Quarterback who leads the league in yards per attempt is a great quarterback, while ignoring the fact that he doesn't throw touchdowns and does throw at least one pick per game, or a dyslexic accountant who only gets you audited every four or five years reliable.

And Cruz is wrong. Violent offenders just don't really vote (if you're a violent offender who has been caught, you're probably also a felon, freed from the socially responsible burden of voting). If you look at the demographics and lay those over voter statistics you could probably say that their families tend to vote Democratic. But that might be considered racist.

I thought that black lives matter. I guess these kids, including a 9 year old boy and newborn baby girl, who were just recently murdered are not considered "black lives". i see an occasional report on TV about murder in Chicago but no one is out demonstrating against the taking of these young lives.

938 - Not that your mind will be changed, but for onlookers it's fun to address your points.
- The US economy is doing somewhat better than when Obama took office seven years go. In the meantime, his administration's policies extended the length and worsened the severity of the recession.
- Bush was handed an economy just coming out of a Clinton recession, and then that unpleasantness of 9/11 happened. (A bit of a dent in the economy, that.) Within a few years, the economy was doing quite well, and did so for several years. Under (and because of) Obama, the bad economy worsened, and only now, several years later, has begun to inch upward.
- Thousands of US military casualties have occurred since Obama took office. In the seventh years after he took office (and after he won the Nobel Peace Prize) American soldiers are still being killed. (Not "zero.")
Thanks for the opportunity.

It's funny how quickly some of you will label a sitting president as "the worst president in history." That's an impossible statement to make. Further, it shows that you are either woefully ignorant regarding US history, blinded by your political ideology, or both.

Various anons: "convicted felons can't vote" You might want to read up on that. You might also want to inform yourself of what Cruz actually said. Additionally, Cruz's statements are backed up by research.

wordkyle said...

1245 - You're right. I engaged in a bit of hyperbole to show how weak the Republican candidates were the last two presidential cycles. Obama's probably not the worst, not with Grant, Harding, and Carter in the mix. I'll amend my statement to "among the worst."

Sam Brows said...

According to the Sentencing Project, in the 2008 election, there were 5.3 million Americans who were unable to vote due to what is referred to as Felony Disenfranchisement. That number included 2.1 Million individuals who had completed their sentence. In the 2012 election the number of Disenfranchised increased to 5.85 Million. In 1974 the United States Supreme Court took up the issue of Felony Disenfranchisement and held it to be constitutional on its face (see also Section 2 of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution). As long as a state's motive in barring a felon from voting is not racially motivated, it is constitutional according to the all hallowed "law of the land". WK and 12:47 correctly state the rule in Texas, you are allowed to vote if you've completed all of your sentence, including any probation or parole; however, that rule is not consistent across the entire country as each state has differing levels of felony voter disenfranchisement.

I think Barry's point about the Sheriffs office patrolling is that they normally don't patrol, or do a lot of traffic stops. This seems to be something new and the fact that they have focused in on specific areas of the county is a little puzzling. Seems odd to me as well.

Anonymous said...

"Why are Wise County Deputies doing traffic stops on 287 and in the Southern part of the county? Something seems odd."

Seriously? It seems odd to you that... deputies, who are in marked patrol units, and who are defined as Peace Officers under Texas CCO 2.12, are making traffic stops, on rural highway in the county that they work in?

There are 253 other counties in Texas where that is not considered odd. Not to other people.

“The simple and undeniable fact is the overwhelming majority of violent criminals are Democrats” - Ted Cruz during an interview on Monday. “There’s a reason why the Democrats for years have been viewed as soft on crime,” Cruz continued. “The Democrats know convicted felons tend to vote Democrat.”

Actually? That's probably going to be completely true.
You can claim that the system is skewed on a racial basis, and you can claim other biases, but if we're talking about people who are doing time in prison versus people not doing time in prison, I guaran-damn-tee you that the higher percentage of felons are Democrat. But then, they don't vote. So the ones that went to jail but just missed prison-- they're higher percentage democrat.
I worked in a jail for awhile. Those guys seriously do some Democratic campaigning.

The democrats know dead people and cartoon characters tend to vote democrat.

They have historically not been a patrolling force in Wise County. They typically respond to calls, exercise warrants, handle security at events, investigate crimes, run the jail, provide courthouse security, etc. They have a small patrolling force that, to my knowledge, has typically been a support type role for city and DPS stops. Point is, a heavy increase in traffic stops, especially in only specific areas, is odd because it is a departure from the norm. Given the sudden announcement of the Sheriffs early retirement, and a change in department procedure, I think it warrants the "seems odd" designation!

Why do you continue to spew propaganda?

George Bush inherited a recession created by the Clinton Administration. Why is it you cannot overcome the denial of your political party to embrace the obvious. Even though I don't consider GWB a good President, Clinton helped create the recession with his housing bubble laws.

Yes, Obama is the worst President I have had the priviledge to witness, just beneath Jimmy Carter.
