Random Tuesday Morning Thoughts

  • My heart goes out to the family of Kate Fostel who has passed away.
  • I've got this odd quality: When I get immersed in something that I think is important -- something that requires thinking -- I'll do the dumbest things because it distracts me from everything else. I first noticed it well over a decade ago when I was in the drive-thru at Whataburger in Decatur for lunch and was thinking intently about an appellate brief I had worked on all morning. I paid for my order and drove away without the food, and I didn't notice it until I got to the courthouse.
  • And that quality of Intense Thinking And Distraction caused me to have both a glorious yet ruined long weekend.  When you don't care about/didn't realize three fantasy football drafts went on, you know who are into something deep.
  • Martin Milner has died. Milner played Officer Pete Malloy in the old TV show Adam-12 which was a big player in the Green household as I was growing up. We prided ourselves on knowing the Code Numbers when they were called out.
  • I've always called the Fellowship Church in Grapevine the "Church Of Bits."  BagofNothing's post starts off today enforcing my belief.
  • Stolen thought: "5-4 majority in Obergefell [the same sex marriage case] = invalid ruling by 'five lawyers.' 5-4 majority in Hobby Lobby [can't force private businesses to provide contraception is the object for religious reasons] = unquestioned law of the land."
  • One of the oddest things about Mrs. LL is that she goes crazy over a "spin move" in football. Wait until she sees this one from last night
  • I've mentioned many times that the demise of football when we have a death on the field in the NFL or major college program. I think we had a horrible "death on the field" in a Louisiana high school game this weekend although, not that it makes any difference, almost all the reports say he was declared "dead at the hospital."
  • Ted Cruz is headed to Kentucky to support jailed clerk Kim Davis.  If he wants to support her for her will to break the law for religious convictions, I guess that's OK. But if he says the jailing is unjustified under the law, you will have a brilliant constitutional lawyer lying to your face.
  • I forgot to mention that Mack Brown was pretty good doing play by play on the Baylor/SMU game. If he ever said, "What the coach is thinking right now . . . " it was normally spot on.
  • You have to love Sarah Palin:  "I think we can send a message and say: ‘You want to be in America? A, you better be here legally, or you’re out of here. B, when you’re here, let’s speak American.’ I mean, that’s just, that’s – let’s speak English."
  • I couldn't find the "Attorney's Puzzled" story below online this morning. Maybe it's on the website now. (And I feel the pain of anyone associated with newspapers who is thinking, "And everyone just thinks they should get our content for free.")

You are such a hard worker! Thanks!
Did you post anything about wearing BLUE to support the Police last week?

So, I was walking through Chicago and I saw that there was a “Muslim Book Store.” I was wondering what exactly was in a Muslim bookstore, so I went in.

As… I was wandering around taking a look, the clerk stopped me and asked if he could help me.

I imagine I didn’t look like his normal clientele, so I asked, “Do you have a copy of Donald Trump’s book on his U.S. Immigration Policy regarding Muslims and illegal Mexicans?”

The clerk said, “GET OUT!, GET OUT AND STAY OUT!”

I said, “Yes, that’s the one. Do you have it in paperback?”

Re your "stolen thought" - Reverse your points and you have the exact same scenario, but from the other side. And these arguments have been made -- by both sides.

I used the "opinions of five lawyers" argument myself recently, in the context of some commenters trying to make the moral argument about Christians "imposing their beliefs" on others. I pointed out that the Supreme Court's decision was five lawyers imposing their beliefs on the entire nation. Legally binding, yes, but not a moral commandment.

An observation I heard recently: The Kentucky clerk Kim Davis is a white evangelical Christian from Appalachia. She's the easiest target in the world for Liberal elites to despise.

Re: Ted Cruz

I agree with you. Adam Carolla has a game that he calls "Stupid or Liar?" that applies perfectly here. If Cruz states that Davis's jailing for contempt is unlawful, he's either stupid or he's a liar. He's clearly not stupid, so the only remaining option is liar.

And it wouldn't be the first time Cruz has done that. Again, he's not a dummy, so I wonder how his mind reconciles taking positions with weak or even no legal support simply to pander to voters. Well, to be fair, I guess that question could be asked of every politician.

I agree with Mrs LL on the spin...I never watch football but that video tickled the heck out of me..I like it.

What if the server at Whataburger said: Sir glutney is a sin. As a Christian I cannot enable you by serving you!!!!!

These so called Christian politicians capitalizing from Ms Davis bigotry is intolerable.

One doesn't affirm her Christian belief, by trampling on other teachings of Scripture. Say, what Christ and later Peter and Paul said about respecting authority, or Paul's admonition to Christians not to force their beliefs on non believing relatives or not to mention loving your neighbor.

If you are opposed to gay marriage, don't marry one.

This lady and the organization behind her are just raising money from misguided Christians.

I had very strong religious beliefs re the Vietnam war, but when called, I submitted to authority, served,...............

Who is Kate Fostel?

"paid for my order and drove away without the food, and I didn't notice it until I got to the courthouse. "

May I recommend "mindfulness" as a solution?

How did you explain yourself when you returned to Whataburger to pick up your forgotten food?

NEWSFLASH- Police support is at an all time low. You reap what you sow.

12:53 - The word "all" is unnecessary in your sentence.

What the heck is Glutney?

12:07, your "newsflash" is idiotic. Police support is not at an all time low. Your mind is so influenced by a few snippets of what you see on TV or the internet, that you actually think it represents the population. NEWSFLASH: the hundreds of thousands of polite, courteous, and helpful or otherwise non-hate filled interactions between law officers and citizens that occur each and every day are NOT shown on CNN or on Yahoo each day, because those don't generate idiots who click on and see ads. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

"We support the Blue by paying their salaries."

Your attitude towards these men and women that do that job everyday makes me sick. Let's hope whatever amount of money you pay in taxes is enough to keep under paying these people for a very dangerous job. A Stupid comment from someone that if I was a betting person would put money down that paying taxes gives you the idea you are doing your part to put your self before others. How very sad.

A clerk of a county has statutory obligations to perform. They don't make the law. If a Clerk believes it is a sin for someone to divorce and remarry, or that gay marriage is immoral, it is fine to have that belief. That doesn't mean that the Clerk is exempt from doing their duty as a clerk. If the Tax Assessor believes that women should not be allowed to own a car without the consent of their husband because of the Tax assessors religious beliefs, that does not exempt him from registering cars to woman who don't have the consent of their husband to own a car. If you are in government and religious principals want let you do things that have been declared legal to do, maybe you need to find another job or let someone else in the office do it.

Anon 10:40 and others who may be curious: Kate Fostel is a beloved Decatur native from a well-known family; she passed away at age 33 a few days ago.

3:10 you mean teacher or lawyer, right. Thought so.

Where did you do time?

Anonymous said...

When cops stop using their sidearm as a crutch, covering for bad/lying officers and treat us as citizens, not insurgents... I'll start supporting them.

But you couldn't, 3:10.
Fact.

Still don't understand the pricing of diesel. In the Northwest, diesel is much lower price than unleaded. Anyone want to suggest why?

To the morons denigrating the police; you are the least likely to be willing and able to protect yourself if necessary. You are also the most likely to bitch about the amount of time it takes for the police to arrive and protect your wimpy ass! Good luck.

mzchief said...

You people, gritching about the police, need to stop and think about how bad it would be without police.

How many of you keyboard warriors would be willing to step out of your auto and walk up to the driver-side window of every random car you stopped on a dark stretch of some back road/busy highway, even if you were carrying a sidearm?

Yeah, it's a job THEY volunteered for but never forget, it's one most of us wouldn't do, for any amount of money. Sure, there are bad cops, there are even crooked cops. However, there are dirtbags in EVERY occupation. For all we know, YOU could be one of the undesirables in your profession. Before you decide that all LEOs are bad, you need to get to know a few of them and be sure to thank the ones who make our society something short of anarchy.

213,

I agree with you about the Co Clerk needing to do her job, or resign.

But putting her in jail?

If you believe that is OK, then I am sure you also agree that all of the local politicians involved in sanctuary cities also need to go to jail, as well as all of the people in Wa and Co who allow stoners to smoke pot.

You are not a hypocrite, right?

Does it matter if the family is well known or not you imbecile? A young lady is dead and u want to qualify her passing with a "she's from a well known family" tag? And somehow you probably think that is ok you moron.

RIP Kate
You will not be forgotten

This pro-cop douchebag is prolly one of those 30 year old cop wannabe's that goes on ride alongs in his free time, and belongs to the citizens police because he cant hack being a real cop.

Anon 6:33, you've misunderstood me - I was trying to explain why one individual was mentioned by name on this blog over the many who pass in Wise County every week. It doesn't and shouldn't matter who her family is; it's just that she was known to many readers of this blog (including to me personally), and her passing was too soon, and that these facts are of note. Those of us who knew her are grieving the loss and hurting for her family.

Anonymous said...

Yes agreed Kate Fostel will not be forgotten. Not from whose daughter she was but more importantly because of the beautiful young woman that she was. Rest in peace sweet girl.

Anonymous said...

6:33. Issues much?

Anonymous said...

Then your doing a poor job of it.

Seems to me if we're going to put elected officials in jail for not doing their jobs according to the law, then Obama should be behind bars for a long time for failure to enforce the immigration laws.
