Random Monday Morning Thoughts

  • "How 'bout that ride in?" (That's for fans of The Hangover who kept up with me this weekend. I'll dedicate a post to it later. Promise.)
  • I missed the coverage of the funeral this weekend for the Lancaster cop killed last week, but apparently a lot of officers were not pleased with the decision to give a police escort to his deceased killer who was the son of the Dallas Police Chief. Don't most processions have a cop or two helping out?
  • It's odd, but I don't see a lot of funeral processions any more.
  • It's brutal over at the City of Bridgeport. It has eliminated 25 jobs this year including 10 over the weekend. Wow.
  • It's political death morning: Former Texas governor Dolph Briscoe and senile long term Senator Robert Byrd.
  • And I hope she doesn't join that club: Former teen sensation Jennifer Capriati was hospitalized yesterday due to an overdose. Jogging in the afternoon was probably a bad idea.
  • I tried to watch the season premiere of Entourage last night but was too sleepy to make it through it.
  • Michael Douglas' ex-wife says their divorce decree entitles her to 1/2 of his income off the upcoming Wall Street 2 movie. (The article throws down Douglas' character's famous line, "Greed . . . is good."
  • Ghana? We got beat by Ghana?
  • This is abbreviated, I know. I'll make it up to you.

Most funerals do have officers as escorts, but only off-duty. I have a friend who is a Wise Co. deputy who works off-duty as a funeral escort.

They did bring them in to help with the traffic problems. I don't believe most people would have cared, except for the fact that this was a man who was responsible for a policeman's death.

I support the police and respect the jobs that they do. However, this protest over an escort is over the top. Maybe the kid was a cop-killer, but I suspect the motorcade was out of respect for the father and to prevent any problems from hecklers. Let it go. The chief is already suffering without his men causing more havoc.

Hope you DVR'd Entourage last night. It was pretty good!

Also, I watched Gasland this weekend. Scary but good and I know folks will say the guy that made is some tree hugger that slanted the info to make his point but after watching it....well the info kind of speaks for itself.

Did you happen to get married over the weekend while in Vegas?

The city of Bridgeport could give Obama and his crew a lesson or two in fiscal responsibility. It's called "if you don't have the monet, then don't spen it." I realize that's an awfully hard concept for all you lib weanie, big nanny gov't types to comprehend.

What happened to the investigation that led to the firing of a large number of employees? Is it going to the Grand Jury?

Perhaps the City of Bridgeport wouldn't be having to lay so many employees off if they weren't paying $13,000 per MONTH to bail out the failing Doctors Hospital! Reported by the Mess on July 6, pg 5A, the hospital exhausted its $3million line of credit and the city agreed to bail them out! Why are the people of Bridgeport standing for this and not protesting????

About the police escort, about 6 months ago we had to plan for a funeral to take place in Dallas. We had a choice to have a police escort service or what people are doing nowadays to to announce what time to meet at the grave site. So they had options.

9:24, Maybe the city is helping the hospital by temporarily paying the interest on the line of credit because it is good business? After all, NTCH is one of the largest employers and electrical customers in the city? You ever thought about that? Also, the hospital in Bridgeport is not "failing" as you allege. It is still a rather new, start-up facility that has struggled during one of the worst economic downturns in our area and nation. However, it is doing much better now. In fact, this past month more babies were delivered at the Bridgeport facility than at Wise Regional and it does not have a hiring freeze in place right now as does Wise. So, if any hospital in the county is "failing" right now, it appears to be the big boys east of the Sandy.

The note that the City of Bridgeport is paying for the hospital is just one of the many problems that has to be corrected.

The City lost their bond rating a few weeks ago, utility bills, running a major deficit of $850,000, and many other issues that seem small but really add up.

There may have been good things happen recently in town but they came at a major expense to the tax payers. It will take some effort but they will get things right.

Sorry to hear about Jennifer Capriati. Was a fantastic tennis player in her prime. Drugs can drag even the best down. Sad.

Congratulations on your weekend! You both look very happy!

The City of Bridgeport changed some of it's City Coucil out Added a sharp City Admin and has started fixing the problems of the past many years. Should have been saving money in the big Barnett days instead of blowing it all on fancy buldings an offices an hiring more workers we dont need.

Its about time!

Congrats to you both!

Skippy, I would have bet money that you would have broke the news that you and your significant other life partner had gotten married over the weekend in San Francisco during the Gay Pride Parade.

10:17 You call a year and counting "temporary"???? From my own personal experience, I know 4 nurses who have quit from that hospital (B'port) and refuse to work there due to dangerous conditions and poor management. You can pretend to blame it on the economy if you want to, but the truth is that Wise Co. didn't NEED another hospital and if they'd been smart they would have recognized the economic downturn and not stuck their necks out on a limb based upon petty grievances and bitterness. And for your information, WRHS is doing well. There is NOT a hiring freeze. They are still hiring, just not as rapidly as at one time. They've hired 22 new employees in the past month alone, so your sources are all wrong. WRHS just better manages their money and makes better financial decisions. They haven't had to be financed by local goverment for over a year to operate.

Bridgeport dang sure ain't gonna like it when the new Albertson's gets built in Decatur.

The city is doing the best it can with what it has now. The best solution is to try and balance the budget and move on. Once things pick up they can rehire those positions. If you have better solutions then go to a city council meeting and voice them. They have lost some really great employees and now other people are doubling up on responsibilities. The next year will be hard on all but it will all work out.

So, I see no confirmation that you took the plung over the weekend...just speculation. True or not? If so, wish you the best.

Congratulations and best wishes to you and your beautiful bride Kat. I hope it will last forever.

Sure is funny I know of a particular candidate that was supposed to start at the Decatur hospital but was told that they were having a hiring freeze after all test were passed.

Congrats on your wedding!!

@ 9:20 - It sure is a good thing that Bush kept his spending down.

12;30, If WRHS is hiring then why are they also letting people go saying they can't afford to keep them?

Anonymous said...

#1 this is not a post about WRHS vs NTCH, both are fine institutions. Secondly, for accidents, emergencies on the west side of the county, it's great to have care in the form of an ER in Bridgeport. There are SEVERAL doctors in the county that admit and perform procedures at both facilities.

Last point, the fed and state govt could take note from the layoffs. I'm saddened when anyone loses a job. That said, public sector jobs should never flourish when the private sector is struggling to support it. I wish our local school districts would learn that as well.

I just know they're still hiring in some areas. I have a friend who started there last week, and she said the orientation for new employees had quite a few new employees in there. They're hiring for some areas and there's not a need in others. You obviously don't know the right people. I know some were let go who were causing problems anyway.

Anonymous said...

You are missing the point here, folks. The point was that whether WRHS is or isn't doing well, it's an obvious FACT that NTCH is not and never has done well. Why anyone would continue to through good money after bad makes little sense to many of us out here.

I couldn't tell if this was a bit or not. But it seems that lawyer Green signed over half of all his belongings to a lovely lady..Congrats to both of you..

I know for a fact that Wise Regional has put a hiring freeze in place and I also know for a fact that North Texas Community Hospital is doing better and is about to finish the best month in its short history.

Sobe Lifewater is very good.

3:47 I work at Wise Regional, and we have NOT instituted a hiring freeze. We are still hiring in some areas as needed. Check our website before you speak about issues you know nothing about. We just processed several new employees today!

Barry, shame on you for calling Mr. Byrd senile. If you live that long (with your jogging you may), somebody will call you the same.

At least have a bit of respect for his family.

Anonymous said...

give it a rest 4:54, Byrd was senile and we paid for it with some of his votes. When one is a publicly elected official, they are fair game for scrutiny!

Dude, you got married. I know you know cause judging from your bride's cute dress, this wasn't a Britney Spears hey-let's-get-drunk-and-get-married-in-a-ball-cap-and-holy-jeans-and-then-wake-up-confused-the-next-morning kind of event, so informing you of your nuptials wasn't really necessary. She had on cute shoes, too. That's a good news.

Decatur isnt going to like it any better when Albersons buys the property on 287 in Rhome.
