Above The Fold

I rarely do this (and this is not a paid ad). Go buy the Messenger and read the story on the JP appointment. Delicious. Wise County politics. Williamson. Lamance. Manning. Sosa. Clark.

Edit: This story has bothered me all day. If you are a county employee who works hard and has been told if you will work hard you will be rewarded, you need to be seriously concerned.

Edit: Here's the link to the full story. Read every word if you care about Wise County.  (Credit: Kristen Tribe for a fantastic job of seeing what was really going on.)

ok, let me see if i have this straight

craig johnson was appointed jp after his wife, rip terry, died, when the commissioners weren't going to appoint him because that wouldn't be fair due to the upcoming election, whomever was appointed would not be allowed to run in the election... but then they changed their minds and decided to appoint him anyway because there was no democrat opponent and the wise county republican party chose him as the candidate

then craig johnson's father was appointed sheriff because lane had an opponent and they didn't want to appoint lane because that would make the election unfair by making him the incumbent

ok...so NOW, craig johnson gets to choose the new jp, who just so happens to work for the the head of the wise county republican party...the same one that chose craig and changed the rules...and his father...and changed the rules...while there are several potential candidates that might try to run in the primary but the replacement jp will be incumbent by then...

It's things like this that makes me appreciate all the Tracy Smith did for the county, and I could care less about the Democratic Party. Wise County is truly family owned and operated.

I don't live there but all of this sounds goofy.

Harry Lamance is the only good one in the bunch.

Sosa has worked in that office for over 15 years right? She's been the office manager for at least that last 10? So she trained Terri Johnson, then she trained Craig, and now she is going to train Manning. But somehow she ISN'T the most qualified?

Let's see.... what is Sosa missing?? Oh that's right - money, a political family name and political friends that owe her a favor.....
well it all makes sense now.

I'll bet ol' Craig patted her on the back and told her how he valued all of her hard work... when really he was just looking for a soft spot to stick the knife.

Anonymous said...

Agreed. 4:58 for the win.

Anonymous said...

Sosa needs to be on the ballot in March. Sounds like some monkey business going on.

Amazing story. Thank you Kristen Tribe and Roy Eaton for putting this story out there. When a community gives an elected body a free pass to do what the elected leaders want because they are "good people", we start down that trail where bad actors can twist to process to their personal agendas. It is so easy to get off track. That's when it becomes a Family Corporation, not County Government.

Another amazing story published in the Washington Post this weekend regarding local government leaders making bad decisions that led to unanticipated outcomes. Johnson County Sheriff's Office folks conducted a late night raid on a traditional family because they bought supplies to raise hydroponic tomatoes in the basement of their home. Nobody in the house was a druggie or used. It was all about one rogue cop using everyday information to make a bad judgment and no one in a responsible position questioned it. And a family is tainted and traumatized as a result. And no one in government is accountable, yet.

Read the story.

DF But I Know Them. They're our neighbors. We can trust them to look out for our best interests. That's why we elected them. I don't need to second guess their decisions.

Lamance!

Anonymous said...

It seems to me Harry is the only one willing to stand up to this "Wise County" politics ring. That's some sketchy appointing is all I will say...

Anonymous said...

Now can you see why Trump won?

The story in the paper is sickening. Local politics are corrupt as Washington.

One particular group seems to benefit from all these appointments!

Good job Lamance! I think he could see what was happening and tried to stop it but he was the only one.

Drain the swamp

THANK YOU HARRY!!!!!,,,,,,For calling it like you see it and I agree with you 100%!!!!!! Looks like a little bit of Rhome has just crept into JP2 office and ALL of Wise County.!!!

Anonymous said...

Don't be fooled that the Wise County Messenger doesn't facilitate the "in" crowd. They are part of the problem. They are right there with the county judge and only report what they want when they want.

Anonymous said...

Well they did turn it into the JD show for a while. Now he is abusing his power. 11:52 is right, this is some real "Rhome" type politics at best. I will seek other charities to donate to if she is really involved as an officer for United Way. There is something really strange going on.

Anonymous said...

Or they may of picked the best for the job, just saying.

Anonymous said...

Clark got bullied by Williamson?

Anonymous said...

The people picked the best, they voted Lamance

Anonymous said...

WCM doesn't report a fraction of the real news. They wouldn't know investigative journalism if Woodward and Bernstein typed it up and read it outloud on the courthouse lawn.

Anonymous said...

5:58 that's laughable. I'm sure she's a nice person - but what could she possibly know about being JP? Any experience as a JP? Working for a JP? Married to a JP? nah??
But maybe she slept at a Holiday Inn Express and she'll be just fine.

Liberal tears filling the threads nothing more

Anonymous said...

No 8:38,looks more like conservatives who value Lamance type integrity in their officials

Anonymous said...

I am Republican, red running through my veins. This is the most unethical appointment I have ever witnessed in all of my years. I am so disappointed in Judge J.D. Clark and Judge Craig Johnson. We as a county should not allow this nonsense. I am glad to see Lamance stand up for what he knows is right.

Anonymous said...

I am not saying that she will do a bad job because apparently she is a smart lady, since she has worked for the head of the Republican parties office for all of these years but this is complete B.S. She will now how have an edge as the incumbent and it is down right unfair! I hope everyone comes out of the woodworks and runs for this position and I hope Clark, Johnson and Williamson all lose some sleep over this terrible decision!

Anonymous said...

I still have a problem with our "elected" officials NOT fulfilling their commitment to their term. Why is Johnson now leaving to go to the sheriff's department? Could it be to groom his for the next sheriff in town? Most hometown politics.....

Anonymous said...

I see nothing wrong with the way it was handled. I believe Manning will do a good job and will probably be voted for the position in March.

Anonymous said...

I have lost all respect for J.D. Clark and Johnson. I have always loved Clark's do good post on Facebook but now I realize that is just what they are. I thought he might be different but apparently he is the typical politician, You rub my back and I will run yours. I have already heard of a few men and women that are going to run and wish them all the best of luck.

Pretty convenient how it all worked out isn't it? Wise Couny lost a jewel in Tracy Smith

Anonymous said...

Has JD been hanging out with the Rhome City Council? He's learning some real dirty politics.

Anonymous said...

So she says "I will work very hard and diligently to know everything I need to know within the time period I’m allotted.” Doesn't that mean she doesn't know what she's doing? Sounds like this Sosa lady knows the position if she's trained all the others. What was the determining factor that pushed Mrs. Manning over the top to overshadow a person that already knows the position? I'm seriously asking bc it doesn't sound like a fair "fight" for lack of better words.

Anonymous said...

Very sad they passed over the long term employee for an outsider. Sadly, the United Way seems to be a stepping stone for political gain.

Anonymous said...

Harry Lamance would be a great JP! Honesty and fairness.

Anonymous said...

So just bc she's been appointed doesn't mean she's elected into the position? She will have to be on the ballot come March? Is that how that works? I really do not know so please don't bash me for not knowing. I hate politics.

Anonymous said...

Amen, 10:35

Anonymous said...

Sounds like a bunch of hanky panty. Wise county monkey biz.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't want to be a involved in a JP2 case. I'd ask for change of venue. Experience pays.

Anonymous said...

I am shocked that Craig Johnson would be a part of this unethical appointment. You 3 men should be ashamed of yourselves, I know I am.

Anonymous said...

This is one of the most unethical decisions that i have ever heard of. I am a rdgustered republican and can assure you that this is a stink that will not wash off of Ms Manning's campaign in the primary season. I will be sure to remind every republican voter that i can contact in Pct 2. We all need to let Judge JD Clark know how we feel also. If Ms Manning is smart, she will respectfully decline the appointment because I personally know of 4 potential opponents come March and any one of them could beat her in the primary!

Anonymous said...

The Democrats deserve every thing they get.

Anonymous said...

Why is the same computer responsible for 80% of the anti Clark posts? lol so transparent.

Another food for thought...... Lamance openly states he spoke to this employee direct going around the proper process and no one has a problem with that part?

Anonymous said...

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to be in government. Anyone with a brain can do it.

Anonymous said...

Has a single one of you considered that Manning was simply picked because of her resume and interview and that Sosa was not. I personally know that she didn't know she was selected until the day before. I think that if half of you people knew the facts you might be a little slower to judge Manning in this whole ordeal. She is a kind person, very smart and qualified for the position. She will do a great job.

Interestingly enough Lamance did NOT vote against her. He simply did not vote. So I am not sure how much he was "standing up for what he knows it right"

Anonymous said...

Clark follower much lol

Anonymous said...

Clark follower much lol

I agree with 1:58. Lamance did not stand up for anything, simply by the fact that he chose to abstain he literally chose to do nothing, not even making his vote count. Everyone that is expounding his virtue in this matter may wanna tap the brakes a bit.

As far as the employee not getting the appointment doesn't mean that the lady who was appointed isn't qualified.

While I have no opinion on who should have been appointed, I do know this, not all followers make good leaders and not all employees make good bosses

Anonymous said...

So what about Barry getting appointed to the Decatur municipal judge position after a closed session (closed) at the last public meeting of the Decatur City Council. Was anyone else considered for the Judge appointment? Seems like the Dems had their hands all over that one.

Hmmmm....speak of backdoor dealings. Pot call kettle black much!

40,000 registered voters in Wise County and you can win a commissioner's seat with barely more than 1,000 votes? I wonder how many of those with negative comments actually voted.

A follower cannot typically make a good leader. Only a person with leadership qualities can make a good leader. Followers are just what the word says...follower.

Edit: This story has bothered me all day. If you are a county employee who works hard and has been told if you will work hard you will be rewarded, you need to be seriously concerned.

That's rich.

Sosa appears to be weak person. Weak as she has been all her life. Sorry. It's the truth. If you know her you would know this. Some people are leaders. Some are not.

Anonymous said...

I too have no opinion on the appointment but is Mrs Sosa not the office manager? Does that not already make her the boss of every employee except the Judge? Does that not make her responsible for the entire office when the Judge is out of the office? Maybe government is different, but in the business world that is exactly what that means.

Fake News!

DF Clark and Johnson

Anonymous said...

Johnson states that they interviewed Sosa for over an hour and they had some concerns. Hmmmmm. I guess no one else is interested in that? I am. I respect Johnson & Clark so maybe some of you should ask yourselves what those concerns were. Sosa may be the perfect office manager but I am sure there is more to JP than shuffling papers around. Like someone above said, not all good employees make good bosses. Just some food for thought here people.

Anonymous said...

Wow I can't believe they didn't have to prove they actually interviewed others besides Sosa and Manning. Sounds like Manning is buddies with all 3. Didn't she run for another position last year? Want a county job is whatbit sounds like to me. Who do I complain to about these unethical choices? Governer's office? Secretary of State's Office?

Anonymous said...

Johnson has known Sosa years longer and much better than he does Manning. and I would say the same probably goes for Clark seeing as how he and Sosa are both from Chico. They did not recommend her. No one is questioning that? Common sense says there is a reason bigger than any seed BG can put in your head that it is some small town political scandal.

Anonymous said...

Tammy Sosa is a kind, caring woman and I believe her work records proves shes a great employee, a loyal employee and THE employee that trained Craig and will train Callie - What Tammy is not is a social butterfly, a goody two shoes, and Tammy treats everyone the same. Tammy does not play the crowd, she does not flaunt on social media, she does not pay to play in the political ring. Tammy did grow up in Chico, she did not grow up or run in the circles that Craig does, and I am sadly disappointed in JD Clark as well, I thought he was a true hearted, class act - and he has proven he is a player, that likes climbing the popular ladder - I do not believe that JD nor Craig took time to find the best candidate, they chose one with the social skills to play the game. If Tammy wasn't there, who'd train the newbie??? Come on Wise County aren't we better than this?? Does no on stand for right any longer or is it all who's the most popular. Runs with the "In" crowd. Socializes with the current JP. And we push the bullying story on the kids at all schools, where do you think they are learning it from - Parents/Leaders -

Anonymous said...

While I am certain Tammy is a great person and employee, Callie is all those things as well. The post at 2:13 Is most certainly not an accurate description of her.

Anonymous said...

4:59 perhaps you know OF Tammy Sosa but you don't KNOW Tammy Sosa. If you knew her, and I mean take the time to actually get to know her, you would see that she isn't weak. She is compassionate and quite possibly one of the kindest hearted people I know. Reminds me a lot of Sherry Parker (a beloved former Wise County Clerk). Why is kindness in women considered a weakness?
It's funny that the letter written by Williamson could have just as easily been about Tammy. Tammy is also "a people person with a servant’s heart. I have no doubt that she will be professional, caring and most of all compassionate to all with whom she will interact." Tammy never meets a stranger. And she has bent over backwards to help people that come into that office that just need some kindness.
It looks like we have two very nice women being thrown to the wolves by an act of cronyism. While Manning may be a great person there is no possible way her resume beats out the years of dedication that Tammy has already given that office. Take out the names and just compare the level of experience.

Clearly you know nothing about Mrs Sosa or you would know not only did she serve on the Chico City Council and was the President of the Chico EDC for multiple terms, Director of Public Relations for the Wise County Olympathon for over 10 years and much much more! I have served with her on the Bridgeport Women's Club and weak she was not! I would actually say she has a gift of strength, integrity, high morals, and strong ethics! This decision clearly has nothing to do with Sosa or Manning being the best choice! Plain and simple politics only!

At least the Messenger question led the unethically appointment, the Bridgeport Index must be good friends with a manning or with one of Clark, Williamson or Johnson. So disappointed...
