Bridgeport Wins State Championship -- Media Is Not Impressed

Nothing from the Star-Telegram's sports home page:

And I didn't find anything in the Dallas Morning News -- even on its page dedicated to high school sports. But it still had this item up (mentioning a fact that was also referenced on Fox Sports Southwest about a million times last night):

Channel 8 strikes a similar theme:

Because it's not right. Bridgeport was the laughing stock at the tournament. Vs Madison the only kids that scored was the foster kids. The town of bridgport or the home grown kids didn't win the ring. Did you see how bad they looked when they got mop up time. What a joke

Anonymous said...

What's not right? Please tell us, they moved to Bridgeport and were cleared to play by UIL.

Anonymous said...

That the kids were eligible.

Anonymous said...

Who cares how or why they moved to Bridgeport. You have to give those boys credit for being talented! I mean, it wasn't even a close game. They are outstanding young men.

Anonymous said...

Believe me Channel 8 will have a reporter trying to get the scoop on Bridgeport. These kids were good!! Who cares if the are related to Mark Cuban? They chose to live where they wanted to live with their children. I know we have become a cynical nation but not everyone cheats!!! Good for Bridgeport and good for Wise County. It makes me proud. I will continue to feel that way until I am proven wrong. I am sure the rival schools will talk crap, like it should be, but they should be proud too. No, I am not from Bridgeport. All my kids graduated from Decatur, played sports so there.

Anonymous said...

Isn't it kind of an empty feeling? Your kids didn't win it. 4 foster kids did. If you can make an argument for that do it.

Anonymous said...

9:00 am

Me thinks the Bridgeport team had the last laugh... Jealousy is such an ugly thing and I'm a Decatur graduate. Good job, Bulls!

Anonymous said...

Yeah. You're right. We couldn't have won it without them. But these last few months, those 4 kids have made Bridgeport their own. you can talk as much trash as you want. Have fun talking to yourself while everyone in Bridgeport celebrates something great.

Anonymous said...

Am I the only one sick of this Decatur-Bridgeport rivalry?

Anonymous said...

I don't know anything about these young men or the life they have led thus far...but I know Basketball and I thoroughly enjoyed watching them represent WC. There is no way to argue they are not talented. Who cares where they landed, they accomplished something we all wish we could have done !! Congrats gentlemen and Bport! BTW...I Bleed Blue.

Anonymous said...

The home growns didn't help at all. LMAO. Go foster kids.

Anonymous said...

You decatur guys are correct. But I'll say this, I'm finding it hard to react to a major state championship. I mean, what do I do?
Clap? Throw a party? Call my relatives? Go to bed?
So, could you decatur folks tell me how to react? How do you react when your Devin Godbolt transfers win y'all a major state championship?

Anonymous said...

Abilene Wylie stood In Devon's way

Anonymous said...

Abilene who? Oh you mean Abilene Wylie ! The team Bridgeport knocked off on the way to state! Lol

Anonymous said...

OK lets see Decatur wins state in Golf, Track, Tennis, X Country , Volleyball, UIL, and maybe some others I forget but they did it all with a team that played together from PeeWee to 12th grade and that is how you win championships. They even went to state Semifinals in football in 76. No move in Semipro kid to do it. after next year they will be back to 12-17 and 0-10 in fooyball

Anonymous said...

I'm out of county. And truly asking innocently. Why did these 4 boys choose Bridgeport?

Anonymous said...

I heard the Cubans looked up playoff history between Bridgeport and Decatur over the last 20 years and it was an easy choice! Bridgeport!

Anonymous said...

All news papers and News stations see the real reason they won.. I guess you have to be from Bridgeport to really think that BHS won . it's kind of like kissing your sister it don't mean a thang HaHaHa

Anonymous said...

11:02, we are talking about football.

How does Decatur celebrate a major state championship? I need to know how to handle this.

Looks like all the hype about Bridgeport boys basketball was premature. Lost first two games. Meanwhile, Decatur boys are ranked #17 and just beat a ranked Argyle team. Sorry Bridgeport, it just ain't gonna happen for ya...ever.

Anonymous said...

Those boys have a home in Bridgeport. You should drive over and check it out sometime. They live in Bridgeport, represent Bridgeport and they ARE BRIDGEPORT! This town respects them and we are so proud of them. I would say most of the kids in high school are no longer "home grown kids". All I can say is if you love basketball then you better get on board, cause these boys are the real deal and they will be back next year. Awesome talent and great kids. Give them some credit.

Anonymous said...

Kissing your sister does mean a lot in Wise County.

Anonymous said...

If you would hire someone to cut your grass and then afterward stand out in your yard proud of what you've accomplished, then you'll be the type that actually feels that Bridgeport won something.

This title will be stripped at some point for the obvious reasons. I mean does Michael Finleys son really not have a place to live so Cubans in laws took him in? Come on get real!!

4 transfers moving to Bridgeport is the greatest thing that has ever happened in Wise County other than Walmart.

Anonymous said...

12:16, that's the stupidest argument I've ever heard. You my friend are a dumbass.

Anonymous said...

Hey Decatur..... Are you jealous much?!? Haters gonna hate while everybody in Bridgeport is gonna CELEBRATE!!!!! GO BULLS!!!!

Anonymous said...

Uh that's five transfers! Four from flowermound and one from Decatur! Even the kid from decatur knew where the grass was greener!

Anonymous said...

Decatur is a bunch of losers. The only reason they are building the new sports facilities is because they are hoping they can score a couple of move in ringers for themselves. They know the local talent pool is starting to cross breed and are lacking athletic skills.

mzchief said...

To the petty locals...

So what? The guys moved to Bridgeport to play ball and did so at a higher level than the local boys. They MOVED to a location of their choice. Many people move to an area for what the schools have to offer.

From what I'm hearing, from Decatur, is the typical sister kissing, cousin marrying mentality that the only children who should get to play on any school team are their own local inbred offspring.

You people being obnoxious dirtbags and ignoring the hard work of the newer members of the Bridgeport team are what gives Decatur a bad name and the reason so many new people leave, after having had their fill of dealing with your petty BS.

Get over being poor sports and sore losers and congratulate the boys who've worked hard and enabled Bridgeport to become a winning team.

Easy solution. No transfer students allowed to play on sport teams in high school. Ever.

Sounds absurd, doesn't it?

Anonymous said...

That is absurd. Transfers happen all the time. What is not normal is 4 highly skilled players that are not related living under the same roof that is owned by an in law of the owner of an NBA team. Plus one of them is the son of an ex NBA player that played for thiat NBA owner.

Anonymous said...

I think someone who is behind all this is taking advantage of both Bridgeport and the kids in question. Up to this year, those kids have done nothing but play basketball all over the world. Somebody is making some dollars off them. Why they left the AAU to play at Bridgeport is confusing. There must be a lot more to the story than just a Big Sandy disagreement.

Anonymous said...

Even more absurd is that they moved to Bridgeport and not Decatur ! Not fair ! Just saying!

Anonymous said...

Are these magic kids black?

Anonymous said...

Those boys could not have moved to Decatur. The city would have denied their permit to build that huge mansion.

Anonymous said...

Mzchief is so hot.

"What is not normal is 4 highly skilled players that are not related living under the same roof that is owned by an in law of the owner of an NBA team. Plus one of them is the son of an ex NBA player that played for thiat (sic) NBA owner."

It is obvious that you do not understand sarcasm. You most have dozing during English class or working on your jumpshot when sarcasm was covered at DHS or wherever it was you claim to have gone to school.

Your response is even more absurd. Would the students be eligible under your arguments if:

1. They were all related or some related?
2. They lived with someone other than the inlaw of an NBA team owner?
3. The students were not highly skilled?
4. One of the students was not the son of a former player who was a member of the NBA team owned by the inlaw?

Do all, or just some of these conditions have to be true to deterrmine eligibility under your system? Also, please provide a link that verifies the parentage of student made in your accusation. Is this something you saw on the Maury Povich show.

Whatever it is worth,, the students you make the accusations against would have been able to detect the sarcasm in the original post since they actually attend class and are expected to learn in classes at Bridgeport High School.

Anonymous said...

We had a handful of Yankee transfers on my team when I was in school. Nobody was bitching about them. Maybe UIL should ban foster kids from playing. Might as well ban adopted kids from playing too, can't be to careful. New rule "Must have at least 2 previous generations living in said school district to participate in UIL activities." That would ensure that all teams were homegrown.

Anonymous said...

4:50 yep and half black Living with white people that are only serving as house parents to them?
This is why people other than people from Decatur have questions. its all they talked about on Fox sports during the game is about how good the 4 MOVE ins played and that's why the only people that think its OK are the folks from Bridgeport. sure people move in all the time But why would they live with people that are Not their parents?

Anonymous said...

Come on 3:01. You have made a claim. Back it up or retract it.

Anonymous said...

If you knew anything at all about the boys you would know that Michael Finley is not his dad.

Anonymous said...

There IS a reason the UIL has a transfer rule for those in public schools : If you legitimately transfer to a new school district you are ineligible to play varsity play for one year. That does help stop recruiting, which we all do know goes on from time to time.

My prediction after all this "drama" in B'port with the move-ins, will be that the UIL will enforce a rule like the one above, only it will encompass ALL move-ins from whatever school you come from. - public, private, or home!

And I will be in complete agreement with that!

This was a nice win for the new bulls, but had to be pretty hard on the loyal ones who have been there for years.

Anonymous said...

Did anyone see the Plano West Roster? Kids from California, Florida and other states. People don't have any clue how hard these kids work to improve. There is no offseason. It's pretty sad when the haters are on here bashing a bunch of high school kids that are living the dream that most don't get to.

The 6’5” big man was a man on a mission, outplaying almost every Big man in the tournament by using his athleticism, quickness and strength. Playing hard on both ends of the court was maddening for opposing coaches . Another ‘do-it-all’ player that made sure to be a factor every game, showing signs of being like his dad, former NBA stud, Michael Finley.

I am not from Decatur nor from your county. This was a highly talked about issue during the state tournament by both the media and many coaches. If it was 1 or 2 kids I don't think it would be such an issue but 4?? All you need is 1 more for a complete team. I believe if this would have happened at any school school in North Texas it would be just as big of an issue.

My kids? My family is not originally from Bridgeport. I don't agree with the " only home grown kids" comments! The Bridgeport team won. Players who live and are enrolled in Bridgeport won. Yes it's an odd situation, but at the end of the day these boys are LEGALLY Bridgeport students. They are part of our community. How should we react? If it were your school, what would you do? You would have enjoyed every minute of it! This team is talented and they are all great young men. You don't know these kids and that's too bad, but they deserve some respect. I'm proud of this team, and enjoyed watching them win state!

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know why the big kid from Bridgeport missed some district games this year? Injury, grades, suspension, etc.

I'm from Bridgeport and I don't know the truth. The Internet article say that his dad is Michael Finley. Is that not true?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone want to address school districts with open enrollments? Or how about the fact everything has already been cleared by UIL. Or the fact Dallas Madison was able to participate after the two previous titles were stripped?

There are many issues regarding UIL and their regulations but they are more concerned with the product they put out.

No idea why they chose Bridgeport but i am sure happy they did. It has and will continue to be a blast. Oh and didnt the big Hicks kid move to Decatur from Springtown? And all your volleyball players were born in Decatur? Nobody cares that half the kids who attend Paradise live in other districts because they havent won anything.

Although a unique situation the 2014-2015 Bridgeport Bulls are State Champions and played within the established rules.

Anonymous said...

8:13: Thank you for the link.

So, students who are or may be children of former NBA players are not eligible to play basketball, play basketball at Bridgeport,, not allowed tohave a guardian, or not allowed to transfer to other schools.

Which brings up the question: who's your daddy?

If these were 4 white kids that moved in under the same circumstances this would be a non issue. It would merely be a footnote and everyone around the county would be congratulating the Bullies. To me it speaks to the extreme racism that still exists locally and obviously within the DFW media.

At least the kids in those cities have their parents move with them. They don't move into the lakeside mansion of the in-law of an NBA team owner.

Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe these kids were presented with a better opportunity than the one they had? Where would you send your kids...an inner city school or a school outside of the city...regardless if its a homeschool, Bport, Decatur, or even Paradise? FACTS:

1. The big kid is NOT Michael Finley's son. Linking to an article that also has false information is not helpful.

2. They are not "transfers". A transfer student is one that goes to one school, but live in another attendance zone. They moved to Bridgeport and have well-established residency. Bridgeport did NOT recruit anyone. Think about that for a second.

3. These kids played on a home school team, so UIL previous participation does not apply. Even if they had played on another high school team before, you'd have to prove the family moved for athletic purposes. Obviously, anywhere they move they will play basketball. Bridgeport had nothing to offer for basketball so get over that. These are not four kids who played together, then decided to move in together. These are like four adopted brothers who played together because they are in the same family. No one else from that team is in Bridgeport.

4. These kids have lived with this family for YEARS. They are a family, ask any of them. Also, there have been other kids with this family that did NOT play basketball.

5. These kids were not taken in for basketball purposes. In fact, they were not great players and had limited experience when they moved in with this family YEARS ago.

6. All eligibility was very carefully examined and cleared at the highest level of the UIL before any participation. They are well within the rules and this championship will never be taken away.

7. Mark Cuban has no involvement in any of this. He just happens to be related.

8. It doesn't matter what you think, because you have no authority to do anything about it!! So if this bothers you, either get over it or get used to it. These kids are state champions, and you likely are not.

Anonymous said...

This happens everywhere! Look inside and outside of WC and you will see that this same situation happens often in other schools. As long as the student lives in the district they are not considered transfers and can play. Only when they win do people start to question it.

The true test to their basketball career is who do they play for outside of high school, what is their state and national rank individually, what college is recruiting them, and if they are truly "stars" more than likely they would be verbally committed to a D1 school as a junior. Plano West had 4 starters verbally committed last year as juniors and 4 have signed with D1 schools already. What camps do they attend in the summer? Do they get to go to Lebron's camp or any of the other invitation only camps?

Anonymous said...

Racism is alive and well in WC...some things will never change!

Anonymous said...

Nobody moves to Decatur for sports.... They move away for sports if they're smart!! I think one of our players once played for Decatur... He's now a much smarter kid and is apart of a state winning team HaHa!! y'all are a bunch of Decatur douchebags!!! Grow up! its sad that this is how you make yourselves feel better by talking crap about a bunch of teenage kids. 12:54, if you know this FACT, then you tell me how old the kids were when they move in with the family.

Anonymous said...

If you think that transfers only happen at Bridgeport, you must be part ostrich and have your head in the sand. Go look at all the teams that went to state and show us one that is all "Home Grown", none of them. It even happens in the girls world (Sunnyvale). Look at Brock and how many transfer students they have.

Anonymous said...

12:54 So when the white kid was taken in at an age less than 5 years old that was for basketball purposes?

1:10 Why is that sad? If it is true, it's certainly not sad. My opinion is that there were many things that could have gone wrong. The coach did a great job, even if that meant getting out of the way at times. Coach Green is a great guy and the results speak for themselves. Could other coaches have made it work? Probably, but it's all just speculation. The FACT is that Alan Green is a state champion coach and always will be. The fact that you made that statement shows how rotten your core is. It's like saying "Anybody could be an Olympic gold medalist with Usain Bolt's genetics." Maybe, maybe not. It's not really relevant. The coach pulled it off, and winning state is never easy. There have been way more talented teams that couldn't do it. Many would say Dallas Madison and Triple-A academy had more overall talent. Guess what? They got sent home. The Bulls are state champs no matter how sick it makes you!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

2:30

Good point. There's a kid on the Canadian team that won state with Water Valley last year. Brock is full of transfers/move-ins from all over, both boys and girls.

Coaches, teachers and administrators conspire to get there kids playing together to win everywhere and every year. Water Valley won that exact way last year.

There was a whole story on Mumford's transfers and administrator's kids last year.

Triple A won state and basically has a basketball training academy.

Madison won 2 with kids from all over Dallas (illegally and revoked).

There are UIL rules in place. If they were followed, then grow up and quit being a baby. If you don't like the rules then get off facebook and blogs and talk to someone with authority to change them.

Bridgeport Bulls
2015 AAAA Basketball State Champions

Get used to it. Maybe concentrate on getting your own if you don't like it.

If you haven't already noticed, most have already sold their soul, worshiping alma maters and sports teams much more than their professed deity.

If you don't believe me, all you have to do is witness how much time, energy and passion they put into their religious beliefs versus their "other interests" aka idols.

Pride, envy, jealousy are the most obvious giveaways. Then look at where they use their money and resources. Proof is in their actions.

When they know more about sports than the written word, you know where their hearts and minds are.

Church is a weekly social club. Their alma mater and sports teams are who they follow, not their deity.

Maybe because the ones they have aren't financially capable of keeping up or just simply not maternal. Ever think of that? Any kid with a sliver of talent in a not so pretty environment like the one you clearly live in would probably pray for a family so giving as this one to take them in. That half black/white must have bypassed your brain-to-finger filter huh? Last I checked foster or adopting families didn't have to check their race at the door.

Yes, the kid from Canadian is the coaches kid. The same one that got together with other administrators who had ballers and won at Water Valley. He is now at another power house that is stacked and poised to win a couple more. It's not by chance and is no different than any of these other scenarios discussed. I have no problem with that coach going where he and his kid have the best chance to win a title. It's just another example of moving to win. No problem here.

Yes the fab 4 moved to Bport for basketball because Bridgeport athletic program has so much to offer them. Are you kidding me? The Athletic Director probably didn't show up to 10 games the entire season. The first state title for the school and the AD and he doesn't even show up for the celebration. Bridgeportisd athletic program is probably one of the worst in the entire county. Let them celebrate this because as long as the current AD is there the only way they will win is if they continue to get kids to transfer in!

Sure it's weird that amazing foster kids move to bridgeport and even more ironic they are black or half black when no black kids are in bridgeport but it's about time wise county wins a state championship and everyone should be happy for both the team and the great talent those kids have. I'm pretty sure the best players bridgeport, Decatur, paradise, Boyd, etc. Have ever had have been move ins or transfers. I played for Decatur in early 2000s the last time bridgeport was good and I'm pretty sure they had some move ins Atleast one move in that averaged over 20 points a game.
